Thanks for mentioning dog safety. A lot of people don’t realize that horses and donkeys can view dogs as predators. My horse became dog-aggressive after being bitten in the face by a dog. As a result, he would try to lunge at, bite, and strike dogs that got too close to him. I had to explain to more than a few people that, while their dog might be friendly, my horse was not.
Excellent - and very *helpful* - advice! Loving donkeys doesn’t equate to being *ABLE* to take care of them. Because I love donkeys, I’d never own a couple - I don’t have the ability to properly take care of them. Wonderful creatures!
I had 2 donkeys;a mother & daughter. They were hands down the sweetest, most intelligent animals ive ever owned! We had 3 horses, and they loved the horses, but really had the best time with eachother. Playful, loyal, protective & laid back, they even figured out how to open locks, gates ;analytical & sure footed. Cant say enough nice things about them!
Ce sont de merveilleux Êtres extrêmement intelligents et d’une infinie douceur 🥰 . Les gens devraient béa plus les découvrir et et les connaître vraiment 💖💖💖💖
I would love too rescue one. I have the facilities but my health isn't good enough to care for one. The last auction I attended 20 years ago had a dozen grand canyon donkeys for $25 a piece. One beautiful soul had lost his ears to frostbite. I've never forgotten or gotten over him. I never went to another auction because of him. Beautiful creatures.
I have 6 forever donkeys. I think ya'll are doing a wonderful job. I would like to add what I did for the last thing talked about in the video. I replaced all exterior fencing with wire that a dog can not come through. 3 of my Jack's are very aggressive towards k-9s and many years ago had a close call when a neighbors dog got out. The dog was friendly coming to me in the paddock ,my Jack's spotted the dog before I did and took out after the dog. Lucky for the dog the the donkeys stopped when I ask. But none where happy when I grabbed the dog by the collar and began leading him out the paddock. The dog knew me well, and was seeking attention. Not an issues that I worry about now.
____________________ He had never heard anyone talk about the needs of donkeys for their well-being and happiness. I wanted one but I realize that I can't give him everything he needs. That makes me sad but at the same time happy because I know that I will not harm anyone and because now I know what I must achieve to give the best to a couple of them. Thank you very much for your generosity and kindness.
One day I hope to rescue two, or three, or four, or more donkeys. They are so affectionate, sociable and smart. And just like my lifelong commitment I made to my horses, they will always have a forever home with me. Ps- Thank you for the very informative video!!!
Donkeys are so wonderfull! I remember a short video where a girl calls her donkeys name and from far you hear it shouting and then from far away the donkey appears running and shouting in satisfaction to see the girl again. Same like a dog seeing his owner after some time. And the joy screams when the donkey then fell into her arms was so cute.
excellent video!!! I've been asked to be the guardian of two donkeys and told it won't require much from me. They live 30 minutes away and I would be responsible for their training. Your highlighting the responsibility and their dependence upon the caretaker could not be overemphasized.
Well, If I wasn't often away I'd love a pair. I think these are splendid critters. Also, this is a very complete and logical presentation. You're doing what you were meant for. Thanks!
Wow this thing with sleep totally makes sense. As we got our first donkey he brayed all night. I was like when do you sleep dude. Later as he got Jenny he got more quiet
that was one of the best .....fit videos i have seen! donkeys can be the worst and the best animals to have ours were great. we would walk down to the creek and they just followed and ate for a time the three never left each other until it was work time all they did was pull kids in a cart and on a sled. we never rode them. good job
We’ve had a young rescue donkey now for over a year and a half, and although, I certainly don’t disagree with anything, you’re saying, I think you’re describing an ideal situation, which would be OK if there weren’t so many donkeys that need rescuing, and not enough homes for them to go to. You don’t mention that many donkeys are sent to kill pins in Mexico, and then their meat is sent to Asia. Our guy gets excellent vet care, and a balanced diet, and we pay extra for him to has his own inside/outside stall in a breezeway barn in Southern California, (the county we live in, doesn’t have any horse property for under a couple million ), but the pasture we originally put Poncho in had another donkey that was removed by the owner. We try and visit Poncho every other day, and to tell you the truth, I think he receives more love and affection than our own adult children. I know he will outlive me as I’m 75 years old now, but I have discussed this with my wife and family and told them that I will set aside a special account so that he doesn’t have to go back to the rescue.ranch. Some of the horse owners have commented that he’s in love with the mare next-door, and we even have video of him, feeding her with some of his own alfalfa through a chain link fence. When we take him for walks we let him visit with any horse he wants to. He is truly one of the most blessed things that has ever come into my wife and I’s life!
Fabulous video, Victoria. Lots of valuable content. Well-designed, good pacing. It's admirable how much love and respect you show for your donkey co-star in this video. One of the best donkey-related videos I have found on youtube. I live in Fort Morgan. Hope to visit Longhopes this summer. Best wishes to all the staff and donkeys at Longhopes.
You seem like such a sweetheart. Even though I live in an apartment in NYC and will not be getting a donkey anytime in the near future lol, but I still enjoyed watching this video and your soft soothing voice left me so relaxed and instantly put me in a better mood after my stress filled day of work. What I would give to trade in my fast paced city lifestyle and move to a location like yours on a property with acres of land and a bunch of domesticated animals like you have. That is the lifestyle I envy! Such a great video, keep up the good work and never let that peace and loving spirit of yours wither. You are amazing 👏
Thank you for the info. There are so many donkeys in my area for sale. I was thinking about getting 1 for my horse to have a companion. Now I know that could turn out not right for either of us.
Lovely, informative video. While my circumstances are such that having a couple of donkeys is out of the question, I learned a great deal about these intelligent, sensitive animals. Thank you!
donkeys also stay on key if you play musical long tones around them and give them a chance to hear the note long enough and if it is in their range. try it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they might like it.
I've been offered a donkey in exchange for a motorcycle I'm not using. I live in the mountains of Mongolia and my wife and I own about 2 acres of unfenced land bordered by common land. It's grassy, rocky and forested on northern slopes. I'm 60 and currently healthy and strong. We've considered getting a couple of horses which are cheap to buy but donkeys are rare in Mongolia. In fact, there were just 3 in our region and 2 were hit by cars and killed because they lived in a village and just roamed the roads. We are far from roads and think it would be nicer for the donkey on a mountain side. However, we have dogs and they are territorial. They dislike horses (the herds that roam) but they haven't attacked them. I would love to "rescue" the donkey but I don't think we have a suitable spot. Our fencing situation is almost impossible because of the hilly and rocky land. The dogs might not accept or be accepted. It's a tough one because my empathy says yes but my logic says no.
I also will never own a donkey, but they are wonderful animals and don't let that look on their faces lead you to believe they aren't that smart. They are very smart and love attention.
Very educational. I learned a lot. Before you get a donkey watch this video. I knew that they create life long friendships with other donkeys and humans. They are upset if they aren't with that companion for quite a while each day.
Can dogs distinguish between a fellow dog friend and a coyote? If so, how do you establish that? Must the donkey be raised with a dog for it to feel comfortable with one? Thanks!
a surprisingly intelligent and sensitive animal with a strong personality who needs a companion and who chews the hell out of everything or escapes the enclosure when bored or just for the hell of it. Be careful not to overfeed it or it will become obese and give it somewhere to go inside... which pet does that remind me of again? rats, donkeys are giant pet rats!
I have a question, I have a mini donkey living by himself because his brother died ( don't know how ) about 5 years ago. I have goats but I don't feel comfortable with him being with them . Could i put any other mini donkeys or standards with him
So, if donkeys are let outside fence, they would run away? If cows can learn to come back home, shouldn't it be possible to teach donkeys also to return after walking around in nature?

I couldn’t agree more. This young professional deserves another 100,000 followers. Excellent. I learned so much.
I will never have a donkey of my own 😭. I need a donkey rescue close to me so I can volunteer and get my donkey fix
I’m the same 😢😢😢

As an apartment dweller thank you for sharing your donkey
I would love to have donkeys - they are amazing. I am 67 and could never keep up with the physical demands, but one can dream.
Excellent advice. Donkeys thrive when they have another donkey "friend".
Thank you for being a great human for these animals. I love it, and I would love to visit.
Thank you so much!!

If I had a farm I would have several donkeys. These are such beautiful animals.
Gosh there is nothing sweeter than these donkeys! Just beautiful and such a loving rescue. Such great info and advice too :)
