Hi Wyatt,Yes a little tight but over all not that bad. Some can really be a pain in the a-s like the one that you need to support the engine from the top and then remove the lower sub frame.
Thanks for making educational videos. This challenge of replacing the rack and pinion on my ‘03 Tundra is a job for this weekend! And thanks to your knowledge on your video I’m sure everything is going to be good.
Thanks for the video, no B.S! Very straightforward. Mine just started leaking at the same exact place for the same reason! I live just west of Chicago and I'm in the middle of the rust belt. 200k and it's a 2002 Sequoia. It's November 24th 2019, so I have to have someone do it for me. I hope the hydraulic lines come off as easy as yours did! Thanks again!
Jim you did a great job explaining step by step how its done, now that I see how much work it entails, I'm taking mine to a shop, but it's good to know how much work, and trickery is involved. I would never make a good mechanic like you I cuss too much, too soon, ha, ha
Just watched your video. Very helpful, thank you. I have decided to just rebuild the end of my rack, due to to leaking seals. My 03 Tundra is rust free, I can't believe the difference between a southern and northern truck.
Maple Grove Automotive in Downer's Grove. I bought the rack and line kit on line from a Toyota parts dealer along with the new bolts. Maple Grove put it on and had the front end aligned for around $800.00 I would have done it myself except when it started leaking, it was cold and snowy out, and I couldn't.tget it into my garage.
As with with many things in life, when you are shown how to do a certain task the maestro showing how to do something makes it look so easy due to his experience and skill. I am not a mechanic am am usually reluctant to to do certain things that are, what I consider, above my pay grade. However I have watched your excellent video several times now and am feeling sufficiently motivated to take on the task of replacing the rack & pinion for my 2000 Tundra. When I opened the small package that has the O rings and cotter keys the instructions advise to flush the power steering system prior to installing the rack & pinion. I didn't see this in your video. The instructions also state that the air bag restraint system must be disabled while replacing the rack and pinion steering gear. This also was not in your video. The other thing that I wanted to comment about is that the new rack and pinion that I purchased did not include the holes necessary to insert the cotter keys. In lieu of the holes the kit included a lock nut. I am assuming that as long as the number of turns that the rods were positioned at ,at removal, one just has to tighten the lock nut up tightly. That said, I will study the video several times more. Thank you Mr. jimthecarguy.
Hi Jim the bushing on the passenger side has a hole in the metal bracket. My understanding is that the hole is suppose to be on the top side or am I incorrect? I'm asking because I'm going to be replacing the bushings on my steering rack on my 99 4Runner. Love all ur Video's they really given me the confidence to repair my own vehicle. 👍😁👍😁👍👍👍
The video was very useful, but how does one buy the correct spare part, in this case the correct rack and pinion? If one buys the wrong rack and pinion, can it be returned for the correct replacement?
I did this on a 2001 Tundra. The bushing erosion is where it leaked. One of the tie rods took a 14 and a 24 pipe wrench with cheater bar. The19 mm hidden on top was a small challenge. I used a box wrench.
What else starts to go on the Sequoia's and Tundras at about this time? I have an 07' Sequoia with 140k. It has newish brakes, tires, timing belt, and water pump. Fluids have been maintained. However age and rust are concerns. I'm considering whether I should keep the Sequoia for the long-term or if I should get a new vehicle soon. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.
Retired fleet mech here, great video but I gotta ask, where on earth was your eye protection Jim ? can’t tell you how many youngsters I seen headed to eye doc and getting written up for issues related to PPE, and omg your face around that battery no glasses was a cringe maker. Also I’m curious did you just not film the cleaning of mating surfaces for the rack mounting surfaces along with all the threaded hardware as well as mucked up pressure line threads to keep the muck outta inner PS fluids?
What are the names of the 2 lines that you tied up at 10:06? I need to replace them and having issues finding them and their names or part numbers. Thanks.
Hey Jim I have a 01’ Tundra 4x4 and have no leaks and New bushings on my R&P but my steering is like that of a boat. Hard to keep straight and when I bring the wheel back to center from the right it almost puts the truck into a dangerous sway.. any idea what it could be? I was just going to replace the R&P and put New away bar links but didn’t know if it was related to air in the system or bad seals inside the R&P. Any help would be appreciated thanks.
I have the same issue with my 4WD Toyota Tundra and I'd really appreciate your help finding the Toyo Seiko part 45279095 or equivalent for the rack and pinion. Thanks.
Jim, great video. If I suspect I have a binding steering shaft coupler, does the entire rack and pinion need to come out to replace the steering coupler or can it be changed from up above? 2002 Sequoia.
Hi Sir, Just want to ask if the rack and pinion bushing is designed to have a little play/flex when you turn your steering wheel? The car is not lifted with jack.
my trac control light its on after replace the rack and pinion and code c1231 is now on try to recalibrate sensor but still having the code any sugestion
Had the bushings go bad on my 01 Tundra handled very badly my car guy said bushings were not made for the rack ordered poly bushings on the internet fixed it myself this was 5yrs ago the truck handles like new with 180000 miles.
The tie rod ends would not come out. No amount of beating on the side like in the video budged them. The first one came out after an hour, applying heat, and beating a cold chissel into the joint with a two pound hammer. The second one was somewhat easier as the useless step of beating on the side was skipped. Otherwise the problem was the new rack did not allign EXACTLY with the bolt holes making installation very difficult. This is NOT a job for amateurs though the video makes it look easy. Altogether it took two of us with a full shop and a lift five hours.
That was a pretty big job with some tight areas to work around. Having a lift sure makes it easier. Nice work as usual Jim.
Hi Wyatt,Yes a little tight but over all not that bad. Some can really be a pain in the a-s like the one that you need to support the engine from the top and then remove the lower sub frame.
Agree. This would be something I'd take to a pro. Can't imagine doing this in my driveway with jack stands and hand tools. :/
I’ve watched this video 5 times already (LOL), getting ready to do this next week. Thank you so much for taking the time to post it!
How did it go. You do it your self. Please contact me

My '07 with 140k just started leaking today, and I'm northwest of Chicago. Can I ask who you had replace it and how much it cost? Thanks.

Thanks! This Video made this chore much easier!
I'm happy to help. Watch for the next free tool giveaway coming soon.
All things considered you had some room to work, sometimes those racks are buried deep. A pry bar can be your best friend sometimes. Nice work Jim
Your right this one was not that bad.

No you can just replace the coupler.
Is the coupler accessible from up above?
@@edwardsaylor Good question You will need to get under the dashboard and also under the truck buy the rack.
Hi Sir,

Yes it does have a little play but not much. Thanks for watching.

Have you ever change a rack on a 2000 (J100) Land Cruiser?

Went to Toyota dealer for repair quote on the very thing
They said 2 to 3 Grand
No DICE !
What did you torque the nuts to?
5 ugga duggas
those power steering lines need to be changed too. they are rusty as hell.
Thank you for watching . I'm happy to help.
that pressure line is rusted and about ready to blow.
Thanks for watching.
Cut the cotter pins off.
Would this be similar to a 2001 land cruiser?
It is a little different but the same procedure.
