    Hello all, this is Milton...the driver in this video. I have read all of the comments and wanted to speak to the constructive criticisms associated with my decision to not use the PDK paddle shifters in this video exercise. I have driven with the paddle shifters on those roads and other interesting roads. On my other dual clutch cars I have chosen to conduct my driving pleasure business with Paddles that have made my aggressive and normal driving experience much more fun. Joe and I discussed how we would conduct this comparison video prior and decided I would stick with the automatic modes. Coming from the manual and comparing the much talked about PDK brain and adaptability, I wanted to test PDK decision making and compare its decisions to what my brain chose for gear selection on the same roads. Now its true, the Sports+ mode is track aggressive or as one described, I wasn’t tasking the power train enough even while on the street. True! And its true that I could have easily knocked the PDK off high revolutions with the Paddle Shifters ... True again. I chose another path to assess the PDKs brain/programming that I here so many great things about. I enjoy these discussions and enjoy the car guy mind... LOL... Joe is nice enough to include me in his efforts, so I hope to communicate with you all more in the future....

    11:35 "pipe vs vape" is a great analogy for manual vs PDK/high performance automatic transmissions.

    Gentlemen
    Thank you for a very in depth discussion and video of the pdk Function as I have the same car that I just purchased and thought the sport plus was stuck in manual but its just a race mode function in the car .
    thank you

      Definitely a race mode. Best used on track. Very effective on track.

    Great video Joe. I’m happy to see you make the argument because I faced a very very similar conendrum. I recently acquired my 991.2 C4S and really struggled with the decision. I went PDK for three reasons; being Turbo, the PDK would fully exploit the power. I have a stick in another car at home so I could go get that experience if I wanted. The PDK is the one transmission to buy automatic this side of a Ferrari dual clutch. To be fair though, you can’t go wrong they are two different ways to achieve the same end goal, with just a different approach and or method. Either way owning these things are a blessing. Can’t say I will go PDK in my future GT car though. P.S happy to see some fellow « brothers » with the same Stuttgart affliction. Have a great week ahead.

    Owning a 991.1s convertible with PDK following a 996 convertible with manualshift. In the City will going normal automatic, on the German Autobahn it depends, in more Traffic automatic, Pedal to the metal in Sport when path is clear and on the Country roads in manual, Sport, Sport plus and also automatic when cruising around. But, in every mode its still an 911 with so absolute great fun always!!! Keep going on guys, Great vids, tks a lot for sharing 🏎

    WAIT! Milton never touched the paddles? The paddles are the best part! Especially with that Sports Steering Wheel. Oh man, I hope there's another video with Milton pulling paddles.

      I mentioned this in another comment response, but Milton wanted to see how the various PDK settings (normal, sport and sport plus) were programmed to behave without any driver input. He wanted to see if the PDK would make similar or better or worse decisions than he would make while driving a manual. He wanted to know how the engineers programmed PDK to make gear selections vs how he makes gear selections. He does realize that using the paddles would give him the control over the experience, engine revs especially, as I showed in part 1. He said in the video the fact that he didn't use the paddles does "neuter" his comments a bit. I agree with you though. Using the paddles gives the driver more involvement and control.

    I've been driving manual cars and tucks for many years and never had an issue driving a manual in stop&go or heavy traffic. Like Joe said, if it's what you're use to driving, it just becomes second nature and is not a nuisance at all.

    Manual for me. My cars thus far have been manuals: 96 Mazda Protégé, 08 Mazda3, 17 VW GTI, 19 Ford Mustang Bullitt. I am on a fence whether i want to buy a Porsche or not (some orher things will need to be sacrificed so it is a decision), but it would be a manual for me. Just my $0.02

      Manual for me as well. 06 ford focus 5sp, 13 Honda civic Si, 18 Subaru WRX, and now a 19 Honda civic type R. My next car in 2-3 years was going to be a gt350 but i really am in love with the new C8 corvette. I guess I'll cross that bridge when i get there.

    What a great illustration of how PDK works. Like Milton, it concerns me (unnecessarily, of course) how high the engine revs in a low gear to red line. I would have utilized the paddle shifters more to resemble the manual experience. Regardless, either way is great on a rocket like this GTS. Can’t make a mistake.

      Sports plus in automatic mode is definitely for the track. It was great to use at Watkins Glen, always in best gear for the engine. On roads, overkill unless you take over and use the paddles. This car with PDK is so much fun.

    I used you have a C4GTS PDK and i loved it so much, i have had 49 cars and it’s still pound for pound the best car i have ever owned, and listening to your engine note i am missing it so much, i now have a Mercedes GTR and i love it but for different reasons, I am now thinking i should have kept GTS, we all make mistakes, enjoy

    is it better to drive in sport and s+ using the automatic, or should you use the shifters??

    The PDK just gets more interesting.
    Do you ever customize your settings like an individual mode, for a go to setup in throttle response ,chassis, exhaust, spoiler and auto start etc?

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  4 года назад +1

      My 991.1 doesn't have an "individual" setting that you can save. But I can activate, say, a Sport Plus setting, which usually turns on PASM, exhaust, disables start/stop, etc. But once activated, I can disable any one of those things, and/or turn off stability control. So in effect, I can create an "individual" mode but I can't save it.

      PDK sounds like a shitty continuation. It doesn't have the beautiful shifting sound of a manual gated 6

  • @uspnightfire115

    So he made his assessment in auto only mode without even using the paddles? Doesn't seem like he would have been able to get the full experience. I went from a 991.2 911 GTS to a 991.2 GT3RS and I don't miss the manual of my GTS as much as I thought I would.

  • @skrads

    He needs to try the paddles. PDK is another experience. I liked my manual in my 1988 VW Golf GTI back in the college years.

    PDK engaging? Definitely not or I would have bought one and trust me, finding a used GTS with a PDK is ultra easy. Plus I am never in bumper-to-bumper traffic since I am always on a back road. My car is a toy and not used as transportation. If I were a competitive racer trying to win races, sure I'd have a PDK. Automatics and that is what a PDK is, never went over well in motorcycles and they made a few and all were flops. All my motorcycles are "manuals".

  • @robd1859

    I would rather have a root canal than be forced to drive an automatic or pdk as people call them. Give me a manual gated 6.

      Sorry, hit send button accidentally. Anyway, I changed the steering wheel to a paddle shift versus the buttons and love the PDK.
      After all fluids or warm, I put the transmission in Manual mode and Sport Plus. From that point on I use the paddles to do all the shifting and I find it just as much fun and entertaining as shifting a manual trans, with the added piece of mind that I can’t execute a “Money Shift” by mistake.

    I’ve owned 2 manuals and currently a PDK. SPORT+ is for track use. Sport mode should be plenty aggressive for street driving. Driving SPORT+ on public roads is overkill and dangerous.

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 4 года назад

      Sport+ is perfectly fine on an empty back road or any place you can safely turn up the heat. The only problem here is that Milton is in Sport+ but he's not driving aggressively.
