I have become addicted to playing this song on my guitar and have played little else in the last 4 or 5 months. What is it about this song? It most definitely makes me well up with tears when Neil sings it. There is something ethereal about it - I don't know what it is but it has captured my soul and it won't let go. I think it is my favourite song of all time. Music that can make you cry for no apparent reason is extremely powerful, definitely something very, very special is going on here and I whole-heartedly embrace it even though I can't begin to understand it. Keep on rockin'in the free world guys!😊
bro i cry watching youtube videos so thats not saying much. There is no best at everything because opinions and feelings are mortal and its good to view everything as equal no matter what ;)
I also was enchanted on the night it played on snl. I recorded each snl including the rerun the same yea then I lost the vhsc tape and felt true loss and sadness although I had seen the official vid, but it wasn't the same as the snl live performance. Time marches on but each year there is a harvest moon. This 2022 h.m. is due in Oct but here I am. Now where can one acquire a copycwithoutvthe double screen?
This is the best version of this song... by far. Incredible. A man and his voice + guitar + harmonica... no other accompaniment... wow. Absolutely fucking epic.
I think the one on the right won? 😀😀😀 Seriously absolutely amazing that this one man on his own, with no electronic gadgetry, can captivate us even many years later.
@@RobbiePfunder - Dobro (stringed instrument) as played on the album and here: ruclips.net/video/n2MtEsrcTTs/видео.html Without accompaniment, Neil Young just plays harmonic rings on his guitar instead. Not really hard but he makes it look effortless. Well, he did write the melody and has played it thousands of times by now so no surprise.
When Neil Young gets Introduced at The Last Waltz and starts singing 'Helpless' , Robbie Robertson looks up to the heavens ,smiles and shakes his head in ecstacy as Neil starts singing . Thats what Neil Young's voice and music does to the soul .....
I remember watching this live on SNL back in the early 90s. We were really quite mesmerized. It’s as if he’s the only person in the room. It’s just complete silence in that place. Incredible
Been a Neil fan since ‘72. I try to name my favorite song, but it changes relative to what I’m dealing with. A song like Harvest Moon when I’m reflecting on my wife of 40 years. Sugar Mountain or Old Man when I think of my father who passed 4 years ago. I just love Neil’s song writing and terrific command of an acoustic guitar.
This was my first conscious exposure to neil young. This song filled me with the possibility of love again...lol..I was only like 12 or 13 when I first heard it in the early 90's on pbs. I rediscovered it again at 17 ....oh, to be young and in love. Beatiful song
I was 19?, this is specifically Saturday night live 1987 or 86. I was sitting on my girlfriend's parent's couch waiting for her sister to go to bed to start my finger bang etc...strategy and then this comes on. Fuck duran duran....what the hell!?!? Soul scratching love.
Neil Young is the only human being that can get away with that voice...the combination of his songwriting and melodic genius gives credibility and validation to that singing voice of his. There will never be another Neil Young.
His voice is more relaxed here than with a band, which makes the high notes more pleasant. On some versions his vocal chords are tighter and the head voice has no vibrato as a result. Wonderful!
I did a little searching and found it aired originally 12/05/1992 - Thanks! www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/season-18/episode/8-tom-arnold-with-neil-young-63676
Hey......Susana of Ventura......It really IS one of the most Beautiful Songs ever, And....One of the most Important one's, too......because it's so Dang necessary for All of us to hear such a Lovely piece of music, for all of our Soul's. That's an impossible Pipe-dream I know, but I really do wish that it WAS possible...!!
I saw this live when I was maybe 12 or 13, and I recall being stunned by the beauty of the song, and just thinking it just felt like an incredible moment in late night television. In retrospect, maybe one of the musical high points that SNL cast saw, and that was when Hartman, Farley, Carvey, Nealon, Myers, Meadows, Sandler, Spade, etc. were in the cast. Neil never slowed down after that either. He’s still the real deal.
This is my absolute favorite song in existence and specifically because of this performance. Now in my late 30s and it just hits and resonates every single time I hear or see it.
So true...I heard this Neil Young classic today on 89.9 and thought of you baby...your little kitty has a special story about this song and you...please remind me to tell you one day...sending you lots of little smiles...xoox me
I have been playing the song over and over again just like the rest of you! First time I hear the song was about 2 weeks ago, and I love it. It's so mellow!
Simple chord arrangements, great Martin acoustics, powerful strumming, dropped D, this guy could take chicken shit and make chicken salad every time. Great songwriter, singer and player.
P goodness gracious! Oh my God my goodness gracious! Oh my God he's so beautiful to me and you know what he fell in love with some Well this woman that was actually in it Anyway oh my gosh, are you freaking kidding me? I just left myself. Thank you for your songs. Oh my goodness gracious
Thank you so much for posting this. I've been searching for it on and off for at least 10 years. I remember seeing it live as a 16-year old, completely transfixed by his performance. I'd never seen anyone play guitar like that, and I was just learning. Still can't properly do harmonics like that!
Stacia M... me too! I remember being chilled to the core seeing this live on SNL... what an awesome song. I feel so privileged to exist in this version of reality!
Neil usually has another player do the Harmonics part but as you can see it can be done by yourself. It's not a hard part you just need the practice to get the feel & the hardest part is the final note in the progression. I am more a rock player but have always loved Neil's work especially this tune. I would share a bit though it's an older song I wrote for electric guitar back in my younger days . If you would like to hear it here's the Link. ruclips.net/video/RHj04fFTrZI/видео.html or click on my green icon button & click Lost Time. I also play much acoustic stuff & this song was one of my favorites . Usually do what He does & let someone else do the Harmonic part as you see how much it slows him down to try & stay smooth . That's the really tough part if you want to do all the parts at the same sitting.
I consider this to be the best live musical performance ever recorded on SNL. Saw it live as it happened and nearly cried.
Yessir. I was there, too.

^everybody knows that btw
I keep playing videos of Neil performing this song over and over again. It’s a thing of beauty, the tune his voice and the lyrics.
mate, i have dropped into the same hole in the last month. its an addictive wormhole to fall into.
Count me In guys…. I’ve been doing the same thing.

voice of the century.
I'm doing that rn
Young's lifelong commitment to authenticity guarantees that every performance is a worthwhile one.
This is the best version of this song... by far. Incredible. A man and his voice + guitar + harmonica... no other accompaniment... wow. Absolutely fucking epic.
What pisses me off is that no matter how well we learn to play this song, we ain't gonna make it sound this good.
no shame in that
So true! He is a true master!
Just keep trying…
It's owned by Neil, one can only borrow or.
the reverb is tasty.

i love this song with all my heart, if there was one song to be embedded into my soul it would be this.
Such a beautiful and soulful song it moves me to tears.
Mary Ann Dull me too... I listen to it over and over again... and cry every time...

I like how he effortlessly inserts the Dobro parts while playing solo.

Prolly my favorite Neil Young Song.
One of the most romantic songs ever ❤
Romance at its finest, but only with this voice....Neil Young.....a legend

Absolutely fantastic. This version got me hooked 30 years ago.
Remember just falling asleep when you were a kid this song makes dreams.

Brings back bittersweet memories, love it ❤❤❤
I was a freshman at U of Montana when it aired. We left Charlie B's early that sat night to get home and catch this. It was worth it.
Can you tell me what year? This was a significant view for me as I watched it live, but don't remember the month/year...
It would've been winter of 91-92
