So much material to pluck from freely
And nah we get Bulma only vaguely hinted at with ONE highlighted streak of blue hair like

I'm going to say something controversial. But idk. If you are going to adapt something to a different medium, then go all out and create something new using the broad strokes of the original as a blueprint. I've seen DragonBall. I LOVE DragonBall. If I wanted to watch or read DragonBall, I would stay home and watch and read DragonBall. Instead, I am going to the theater to watch an american adaptation of DragonBall. So things are going to be different. Different people working on the project all have their own ideas of how DragonBall should look. Some are just doing a job and have no idea what the source material is. Some are hard-core fans with a specific view in mind. You are not going to please everyone, considering even the fanbase is split on what DragonBall is to them. Some love the high intensity battles, some love the slice of life fun adventures, some view it only through the lens of Linkin Park amv's from when they were in highschool. 100 fans can't come to a consensus on what Dragonball would look like in live action. So just do the DragonBall thing that you've always wanted to do and let the chips fall where they may.
DragonBall Evolution did not do that. DragonBall Evolution had no idea what it wanted to be. Is it a highschool coming-of-age superhero movie? Kinda. Is it a martialarts action flick? Kinda. Is it a cgi kung-fu fantasy? Kinda. Is it a retelling of the original DragonBall story? Kinda. Is it a modernization of the original? Kinda. Does it do any of these elements properly? lolnope. It feels both "safe" and unsure of what it actually wants to be. Justin Chatwin has fleeting moments of acting like Goku. But the script is so stale that it never let's him be that strange combination of nieve, stupid, aloof, heroic, happy, caring and badass that makes Goku who he is. There is a way to make this "Goku in highschool" plot work. But the movie never even tries to follow the broadstrokes or the blueprint Toriyama made. In fact they even reject Toriyama himself who was probably on board with creating an adaptation that was diffrent from his work. If there is anyone who could write his way out a million plotholes it's Akira Toriyama. That man made "writing by the seat of your pants" a god damn artform. He could have probably helped figure this thing out and give it direction.

@@dn22pkkdd476 I agree. I know 'not being faithful' is something that's a sore point for many people but the term 'pragmatic adaption' exists for a reason. Adaptions balance a fine line between being 'faithful' and being 'it's own thing'. Besides, we already have a (kinda) faithful adaption of Dragon Ball, that's just the anime.
The problem with Evolution wasn't that it had a different approach, but rather that it didn't even try to do it well.
There's many adaptations that have learnt to be faithful, yet it's own thing. The MCU was faithful but it also took it's own steps. Or for a more recent example the Sonic movies adapt the games reasonably faithfully but there's still details that makes the movies their own continuity rather than just a carbon copy of the games. Hell for a more controversial pick we have the first Transformers movie which only really follows the original lore in broad strokes but it _was_ successful (even if it wasn't the best).
I like it when things are faithful but I would be lying to say some stuff shouldn't be changed. Especially for Live Action adaptations. It's one thing for animated/anime adaptions like the actual Dragon Ball anime or something like Invincible where it's far easier to adapt extremely faithfully -- like near 1:1 identical scenes but if I had an anime/manga/comic with a plot as out there as Dragon Ball, I would be lying if I didn't say that changing things for a live action adaptation could be a good idea.
Like, even now I still think a good Live Action Dragon Ball could really be a good idea, especially if you want to reintroduce the franchise to newer generations. Like, I love Dragon Ball as it is but as of right now most kids are just going to be jumping into Super or Daima which isn't bad but a good live action could really help retread the old plot for newer audiences and get them accustomed with Goku's origins rather than just jumping onto Super. Also could help reinvigorate interest for newer audiences like how the Sonic movies has done for the Sonic franchise.

1:08 that's actually not true, nor is that exactly how it happened. Toriyama wasn't "angry" or "furious" about Dragonball Evolution, and he wasn't nearly as harsh as everyone else is on it (Hell, Chris Sabat hates the movie FAR more than Toriyama does), in fact, he actually had a FEW complimentary things to day about it, but ultimately he WAS merely a bit disappointed with it and felt it missed the mark. He was grateful to it's existence for showing there was at least still INTEREST in his work globally, and felt that because of that, AND because he felt Evolution missed the mark that he was going to continue work on the series. His motivation was mainly due to Dragon Ball being talked about again and being a source of worldwide conversation again, which is why he decided to come back to the series after his long time away from it.
Basically, it wasn't SPITE that fueled his return, it was simple acknowledgement that his work wasn't done and that he felt the interest was there, and it was only a SIDE motivation of his to course-correct the perception of his series. He didn't hate the movie, he was just a bit disappointed in some aspects he didn't like, while he actually kind of liked some other aspects, and decided that it was the best time to return.
Just, as many people do, they over-dramatize the situation and attribute a lot of misinformation to Toriyama's opinions. It just needs to be known that it wasn't spite for the movie that caused his return, it was just that the existence of the movie to a global audience reminded him that his work was not yet done.

In 2013 during an interview with Asashi Shinbum they specifically asked Toriyama what motivated him to participate in the production of Battle of Gods, and in response to that Toriyama explicitly mentioned that it was because during the production of Dragon Ball Evolution he was completely ignored and the final result "didn't live up to my expectations".
Also, in the theatrical program booklet that was released in Japan alongside BoG he literally says "...it was greatly different from a certain country’s live-action movie, which really was *no good* " , obviously reffering to Evolution.
You're right that DBE wasn't the only motivation for Toriyama to return to his franchise, maybe instead of saying "angry" I could've used another word like "upset", but the point would've still been the same: Toriyama had really negative feelings towards Evolution, and his negative experience during the production of that movie was one of the biggest motivations for him to get involved with Dragon Ball once again after he found out that Toei was making a new theatrical DB movie.

Around the early 2010's a RUclips channel had made some live-action DBZ shorts that were hugely successful and they later wanted to make a full on web-series based on the Sayian Saga. They went about trying to get permission from 20th Century Fox and they found out that Toei never actually sold the rights to DBZ, only DB and that was why Evolution was primary based on those early stories. This could also explain why a sequel was never made.

Dragon Ball can work in live action. It's just that most people, including fans, don't understand both the series and Goku. What makes Dragon Ball so great is that it's goofy, filled with fun adventures and wacky characters, but it's also serious, filled with stakes and larger-than-life battles.
Unlike many Western stories, Dragon Ball and many other manga don't use the traditional hero's journey; instead, they use Kishotenketsu. Contrary to what the dub might have you think, Goku is not a hero-well, at least not a Western hero-and that's what people don't get about Dragon Ball. Goku is a fun, goofy character who wants to go on adventures and get stronger. He does have a traditional character arc, but the world and characters around him do.
This may sound weird for those who have only watched Z and Super, but a road trip-style action-adventure movie set in the world of Dragon Ball can 100% work.
I think DBZ just isn't made to be condensed into a bunch of 2-hour-long films. Not that you can't work around that; just look at One Piece. As long as the main story beats and heart of the story are intact, you can have a great live-action adaptation.
There are a few fan made live action dbz projects that I think are really worth looking into.

I remember seeing a video a few years ago about the little information available about DBE 2. I don't know the sources of this video, but I think it was on an MDB page, well it was more or less this as far as I remember: the film would start with a quick montage recapping the Red Ribbon arcs and the Tenshihan tournament, yes, they would do that and it looks like a DBE adaptation. anyway, the film would jump straight to the arrival of Raditz and, according to what I remember from the video, he would be played by none other than Robert Pattinson, can you imagine that shit? Robert Pattinson would be doubly hated in the 2010s, the guy just can't catch a break. Everything would follow according to the story and Vegeta would arrive on land, that's right guys, this film would jump directly to adapting the Saiyan saga. I'm not sure about this part, but apparently Vegeta would end the arc teaming up with Goku, perhaps because they didn't have enough screen time to develop all the characters, which is a shame. Vegeta has an incredible arc. The end of the film would be a turning point for the Freeza saga, showing the planet Namekusei. I don't know how much of this is true or not, but I like to believe that it all is. Like, can you imagine? It would be wild!
Edit: I really believed this information because the way she describes the adaptation seems a lot like what is shown in the first film, in addition, Vegeta's actor was an unknown actor, from what I remember he was a martial artist too. A little-known actor just like Goku. I'll try to look for the video and come back here to say the actor's name.
Edit 2: I went searching. The source is actually an IMDB page that is now down. The sequel would be called Dragon Ball Rebirth, and it would be much crazier than I remembered, the film would adapt not one, but 3 sagas. The Red Ribbon arc, the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, would end with the arrival of Rabitz, who was the final villain. I also gathered some information about the possible cast, most of them are unknown actors. but what I found most interesting was Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Kamisama, that would be interesting to say the least. And Vegeta's actor would be Matt Mullins, an actor, stuntman and martial artist. It would probably be pretty bad, but I'm not going to lie, I was interested in all of this, I would see this film.

If they ever try to do it again, they should start with the Saiyan Saga, then Frieza, Cell and Buu. After that maybe consider diving into prequels covering OG Dragon Ball.

Honestly I feel rather bad for a lot of the actors in the movie. Reading a lot of their statements and interviews, it seemed like a good number of them were fans or at the very least were willing to respect the source material.

Never knew they considered George Lucas to direct. He probably could've pulled off Dragon Ball's more whimsical/mythological qualities (Star Wars is already a kitchen sink of world mythology & film genres) instead of shying away from them like the final product. Zack Snyder on the other hand 100% could have gotten Dragon Ball's action down to a T.

Totally unthinkable in manga-sense as it will cheapen the main character.

Hell yeah dude, both Speed Racer and Sin City are awesome. Robert Rodriguez is a great director and he could've potentially done a good job, but I was specifically talking about action scenes. The fights between the kryptonians in MoS are the closest translation of Shonen style fights we've seen in live action yet, no other movie has really shown super powered beings having such large scale hand to hand fights.
