This brings me to tears. I am an 81 year-old white woman. A Christian who has not known she was racist until recently. Thank you Emmanuel. We can all change. If we’re brave and honest.

You are just triggered because you're being confronted with the ugly reality that racial injustice is alive and kicking in this country and instead of self-reflection to see if you have perpetrated this injustice (then trying to find ways to change), you are deflecting and throwing around hyperbole.
No one said, "Shame on you for being white." We are saying, "Shame on you for being born white, watching those who are born black struggle BECAUSE they are born black, then deciding its not your problem and ignoring it." We are asking that you take a long hard look at what the world is really like. Listen to the very real, very scary experiences that your black neighbors have had in their lives, and change not only your mindset but help to change the mindset of your peers.
Myrna listened to what her black neighbors were saying. She reflected on her own actions. She found that she had been perpetuating racist ideals. She decided that is not what she wants her legacy to be. She has decided to change. This is beautiful. Not shameful. This is strength. Not weakness.

@@kenyamilligan5304 In that case, then the conversation needs to include everyone from the African Diaspora, since it seems to me that all of us have the same issue, whether it be African Americans, Africans, Caribbeans/West Indians, Afro-Latinx! We, those of us from the diaspora, are feeling disconnected from the Motherland. Sometimes, I feel we're resentful of our brothers/sisters who have direct, tangible "African" experiences that we, the children of the African diaspora will never have. And, I suspect that it may also be a situation where Africans feels like those of us who are descendants of the once enslaved people are better positioned to take advantage of opportunities, whether in the USA or the UK for instant. (Of course, this is suppositions on my part.)
Again, it's not about race, for we're all of the same race, it's about geographical locations and cultural identities. As a result, it's the main issue that has kept is from being united as the descendants of the peoples of Africa. We can't seem rise above our tribalism. We need to do work to bridge the divide between us as the children of Africa!

oh absolutely. i was bullied exclusively by latinos growing up for being black (i grew up in a predominantly black and latino neighborhood). i got the n word thrown at me all the time. honestly, there’s anti blackness damn near everywhere - asian store owners following/keeping an eye on black customers when they shop for example.
I totally agree. Hispanics and Latinos use many "labels" to disassociate themselves from being black or having African roots deriving from ancient natives.

Ephesians 6:5-8 Paul states, “Slaves, be obedient to your human masters with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ” which is Paul instructing slaves to obey their master. Similar statements regarding obedient slaves can be found in Colossians 3:22-24, 1 Timothy 6:1-2, and Titus 2:9-10. i can do it too. look at what god really says about all this. Also if he had a problem with it. He wouldn't have created it in the first place. I still believe that there is some sort of higher being in this universe, something that created us....maybe is it this entity that Christians refer to God, Muslims as Allah, and Jews as Yahweh, but I will never acknowledge that the Bible is this God's holy word. The general interpretation to the verses you listed is that Christians should “turn the other cheek” and not do anything in an unrighteous manner. Even if it means being subservient to a master. God doesn’t guarantee us an easy (or even happy) life on Earth. Our reward lies in Heaven. The world is tainted by sin, and, therefore, life is unfair. Not that we shouldn’t strive to make things better, but not in a way that causes more sin or harbors selfish reasoning.
@@garym3839 Thats an unnuanced take on historical slavery mentioned in the Bible. In biblical times, people became voluntary servants in order to pay off debts. But they were always treated with dignity, allowed to own property and move freely within the community, and could buy back their freedom at any time, or else be freed from all their debts in the 7th year. It was nothing like the race-based chattel slavery in the Americas, where people were treated in the most inhumane way possible, in most cases, from birth to death, and stripped of their names, languages, cultures and most of all their humanity.

In Col 4:1 Paul advises members of the church, who are slave masters, to "treat your slaves justly and fairly, realizing that you too have a Master in heaven.” ....After reading Joseph's journey and trials in Egypt we do not know why God allowed the Israelites to be held in bondage. However, they were rules that we discarded even with the Trans Atlantic and Middle passage of slaves to the Americas.
I’d like to hear more Christian leaders be this honest. They sweep all the dirt under the rug and pretend it’s not there rather than confront it and help their congregations confront it and deal with it.

definitely- I left the church ( not my faith but the church) a while ago because I was so upset at how the church was treating other people and handling these issues and I started attending church again when I found a pastor like this who talks about the hard stuff to hear, is vocal about oppression and is honest about his own struggles. It could change a lot of people if pastors were more like this.

as someone who has distanced myself from church because i’m a bisexual black woman & didn’t feel comfortable in those spaces- i thank you for uploading this conversation. it gives me hope that i can bridge that gap in the future.
Bisexual and/or gay comes down to holding your feelings/attractions higher than what Gods standard is. Which in essence your sexuality becomes your “God.”

I agree that they're too short for some of us; I've thought that since the beginning... BUTTTTTT.... I also think that the short length can probably help to resonate with people who find some of these ideas hard to swallow for the first time. I would love to see an "expanded" version.
It does not seem that uncomfortable when the people he is interviewing seem to feel the same way as he does.
How about a black person who attends a predominantly white church,
or a black conservative,
black people who did not live around racism & how that can be duplicated,
someone who can come up mentoring programs in struggling neighborhoods to help keep families together & help with early home education.

That's such an important thought and I'm happy he said that! There are so many issues in the world this applies to. It is important to know when you are wrong, but it's not always possible to know this until it is too late. But that doesn't mean you can't try your best for avoiding collateral damage until you know the truth.
How so? Are you aware it's 2020? It is not the 1960's we are more/less living MLK's dream. Is it perfect? What is? Sure, there's plenty of scars from the past whose scabs are taking their sweet time to disappear from, but that's mostly and almost completely cultural and class issues. Complicated cultural issues that warp and twist what is actually happening, via misunderstandings. Along with unfortunate class issues brought on by corruption and rot of a majority of our elected officials. It's why Trump is so popular btw, b/c he's not a lifetime politician and seems to actually want to stand up for the American people.
My point is, Oprah, Obama, Trevor Noah, any number of sports players, Dave Chappelle, and various other black people exist. This has nothing to do with race/skin color, but everything to do with culture and wealth.
Also I'd much rather live my life treating everyone who I do not know the same, which is with base respect and caution.

If your goal is to become a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, then you will need an outstanding resume or CV, the appropriate educational background, BA and an MBA and the zeal to work harder than your competitors. Becoming the CEO of a Fortune 500 company is possible-though not easy. Here are the gradual steps involved.
There are basically two paths you can go down to become a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Both are obscenely difficult but there is one incredible upside…
Both paths are very specific and obvious. You just have to think through the paths.
Option number one, you can go down he corporate route and climb the ladder. Depending on your skill set, you’ll have slightly different paths, but I think there are a couple different things that can make it easier for you.
First, you should align your skills with what will make it easier to hire/promote you, but also be delivering maximum value for the company. Here is what I mean…
Second, you need to be willing to change jobs to move up faster. This is an important lesson and best described in Scott Adam’s book How To Fail At Everything And Still Succeed. If you want to make it to the Fortune 500 CEO type role, you have to be willing to move companies every year or two and keep working your way up the ladder until you are at least at the VP level.
That tip alone can save you decades of slaving away at a single company only to never crack middle management.
So, those are the principles, the actual path then becomes one of building your value, getting promoted, changing companies, and continually working upward until you are at the top tier of management.
Then, it becomes a bit of luck…
When you get to the top 50 or fewer managers, you are with a high performing peer group. Winning the CEO sweepstakes is going to be a game of politicking and luck to a large extent.
So, one way to end up a Fortune 500 CEO is to shortcut the waiting on the existing CEO to quit game, and taking the CEO role at a lesser company so that you have CEO experience. Simply being a CEO of an existing successful company makes you look like a more capable CEO candidate, and many companies would rather bring in someone who has already been a CEO because that looks less risky.
Option number two, you could build your own company from the ground up and have it end up being on the Fortune 500 list. This is an equally difficult task and requires as much luck as it does effort, but it is possible.
Building a company from nothing to Fortune 500 is a lifetime of work. Perhaps several lifetimes of work. You have to have the right skills, the right people, the right product, the right market, the right timing.
There are only a handful of business opportunities that will get you to Fortune 500 level.

Because they are always one sided arguments. They are racially charged videos. Re watch the video. And swap out "white" everytime he says "black". And put "black" everytime he says "white". Once you can do that. You will see. Not once does he mention that .03 makes up the color of people's skin. Cause he seem to have to emphasize these differences. And the mere concept of white privilege is racist at it's core. one college professor said it once in her book and they've been running with it ever since.

For a lot of people, the fact that racism doesn’t exist, that they themselves are not racist and that they have never contributed to these problems form a part of their identity. Conversations like this, truths like this threaten their identity and that is scary. Lashing out or disliking this video is a form of self defence. This is why I try to reflect on myself when I feel threatened because it’s possible I could be in the wrong.

Ya, pretty much what Sammy said. As Christians we realize we are not perfect and all struggle in certain areas, so for us to “call out” someone is hard because we are aware we have areas we struggle in as well. Plus, to call someone out and just say “you’re a fake Christian” isn’t really helpful because they’re just going to get defensive and not agree or want to change. So in order to call another Christian out, it’s usually the responsibility of those close to them to sit down and have a conversation with love and compassion and say something along the lines of “I know you love God, I know you are striving to be more like Jesus and I see that in these areas. But I see that this may be an area you are struggling in and I want to come along side you and help you with this. Sometimes I see you do this and it grieves my heart and I want to help you be a better version of yourself in the same way that I know you want to help me.” The biggest thing is people get defensive and don’t want to be told they’re failing in areas or have different views and aren’t willing to change them. So it’s important that if you’re going to have that conversation it has to be in a way that may actually change their point of view or make them want to change. But I do agree that more Christians need to have these discussions with other Christians.

The problem though, it's conservative Christians saying to the mainline church (UCC, Lutheran, Methodist, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, etc.) you're not the right kind of Christian because you accept a gay member, say that the Bible isn't literally and scientifically factual, or vote Democrat.

As an African I have always wondered how some white people claim to be Christians yet they are so racist. My parents once went to a Presbyterian church in DC. In my country we attend the Presbyterian church so when they learnt there is a Presbyterian church they were excited to go. As soon as they walked in they noted the church had only white people and they got funny looks. They left the church and found another African American Presbyterian church where they felt so at home.
I have never fathomed how white people claim to be Christians and they are so hateful.

Not being racist & not having racism put on me I tend to assume the best of people (I guess that would be considered rose colored glasses). My daughter looks totally different than the rest of us, people will look 👀. I tell her people are just curious wondering if we adopted you.
I’ve gone to churches that are predominantly white and have a very very small sprinkling of black people who some were my friends.
When we were in small group race never came up. Only if I brought it up privately did he talk about it. He did not mention our church (thank goodness) In our parts he said he was pulled over too many times for not a good reason.
All churches unfortunately are not good at welcoming newcomers. It is not easy for some people to get out of their comfy group & be uncomfortable & welcome someone new.
My old church had a welcoming committee & they were spread out all over the church looking for new people to get plugged in so they felt at home. & one of those was my black friend who got me plugged in to a predominately white church. 😂
I am not black, a mixed race, but look more or less white, I guess. My family has gone to churches who need to work on their welcoming. That should be one of the top priorities of a church. But it is hard to make generalizations over all churches. Sorry to ramble. Take care.❤️

I love God and I truly enjoy church but going to a church with a preacher who has yet to speak one word on the oppression of African Americans has really hurt my soul and has had me wanting to search for a different place of worship. I've always loved the idea of going to a diverse church but I want to feel like I belong at the same time. I would love it if more preachers would open up their hearts on this topic. I now have 2 beautiful little lives i raise and I ever once believed I can do better for them in teaching them how to be better... but this video has shown me. If I take the journey with them. I relate to you so much here A. Kan. I was a member of a small (white) fundamental Baptist Church in a small town in TX for over 4 years. I have never loved, and yet felt so lonely, in a church before. I would love going and hearing the word and singing in the choir, but I would get so uncomfortable sometimes and stop going for a few weeks or even months. The pastor finally showed his true heart one day and let me know how he viewed my then 12 year old son and I could no longer make excuses for the discomfort I felt going there. I grew up in the Baptist church, but I never truly felt like I belonged or like I was truly welcomed.

Matter of fact I thought Trump was a little crazy. I felt lonely at times, but I really didn't care if I was invited to anyone's house. It only happened when it was church related. I would visit Black churches at times. I still love a lot of the people. Its bad when politics dominate in a church. God is not first there, then sin enters in.

But you're not looking for it. Re-watch some of those videos and try to find it. Cause I'm not looking at him as a "black man". I'm looking at him as an American man. So I'm listening to him way differently then you. I hear him as an equal. The things he says are underlining racist or blatantly racist. So I'm calling him out as an equal. I don't have an ounce of white guilt, cause I'm not racist. I judge him by his words and actions. And I reserve that right. He even said that he only brings on people that agree with him. That's not an uncomfortable conversation that's a narrative. Plain and simple.
Uncomfortable conversations can lead to growth. My eyes and ears continue to open wider on the societal lies we white people have bought and held on to for way too damn long.

I understand the point he was making by saying this, but I am also starting to realize that, being among the marginalized himself, the Good Samaritan didn't have to contend with the complications of a lighter skinned man "saving" his darker skinned brother from his oppression, since the wounded man was among those who oppressed Samaritans. So I have been trying to reframe the question: "If I don't help the oppressed, what will happen to ME?" The sad state of white churches in America is what has happened to us and will continue to happen to us -- segregation, hypocrisy and moral bankruptcy. We cut ourselves off from experiencing the grace of God, and even run the risk that when we meet Jesus face to face, he will say, "You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me." - Matthew 25:41-43 I'm trying to see it less as me "helping" the oppressed and more as me ceasing to be part of the oppression and redressing the injustices systemically perpetrated against them in our society. Oppressed people are actually helping us to be better followers of Jesus, finally trying to make relationships right with our fellow humans regardless of their skin color or ethnicity.

So many people need to hear this. I wish my church could benefit from speakers like these men. My church always talks about acceptance and fighting against racism, but there is still an overwhelming majority of white people. I've always wondered about how to help fix this, but I'm not really sure how.
Stop going to church. That's definitely one way to fix it.
The problem isn't that there are so many white people in your church. Just be sure to seek ways to help your church interact and fellowship with other groups in meaningful ways.
Start inviting your black friends to join you 🙂
a truly diverse church, has to encourage and welcome diverse members, and has to involve them in planning, decisions, worship, staff members, etc. Can you imagine how challenging to visit a church that's 98% white, if you're a POC ?

The comment on trust makes perfect sense, and I appreciate Pastor Lentz, for speaking honestly about what he has and has not done as a Pastor to begin the process of change within himself and his congregation around the issues of Race and Racism.
I love this show. It's like discovering a new favorite food. I love listening, and the more I hear the better I like it. I am learning soooo much. And am pleasantly surprised the more I watch.
This was an amazing episode. Pastor Carl Lentz was great and truly authentic.. He was truthfully speaking when he said they are concerned with the OPTICS.

I love this, I’d love seeing an episode about the rift that was forced between the medical and the black community. The way that medicine and science was used to enforce racism and I’d love hearing how we can break down how medicine propagates racism and how we can fix it.
This would be a very good topic. As a medical professional, I see racism day in and day out. Racism is so deep; fixing it is like trying to alter ones dna.
I really needed this today.

i grew up in a valley where there were no black people. All I knew was from my history classes and what was available on TV in the 1960's... I was young, and wrote that off as fiction. I was 15 when I first saw a black man in real life and I was so excited, until the uncle I was with started murmuring about him being with a white girl. I had never realized that racism existed in such a way in my own family before then. My mother always told us, and believed, that we all were people...just like my eyes are blue, and my brothers' eyes are green, but we are all her children. I know I still have some misconceptions, and am learning more about myself all the time that I want to change... thank you for this conversation!

Another amazing episode. These conversations help me to take a good look at my life and actions as well. I didn't think that this would work because we're airing out our "dirty laundry" but it's time to deal with the uncomfortable issues. I am such a fan.
So very educational - this should be in all schools. I am a 71 year old white women and would have said I was never a racist. But these conversations have made me cry (but in a good way). By not understanding how sometimes words can be racist - when one thinks they are not - example - "color blind" - every time I watch a segment I learn how I can be better. Thank you Emmanuel.

I absolutely loved this conversation, and gotta say i had lost any care or want to hear or be a part of any religious anything expecially Christianity from years of terrible experiences so many and each and (almost) all giving me that gut feeling which has always served me well throughout life to go away from, the feeling of something not being true or safe or right. This conversation the way that Carl Lentz speaks and explains things reminds me that there is and can be good within it, and reminds me to keep in mind that as great as we humans are we can make things bad too often. Im not gonna become religous or flip the way i believe and live or anything like that..lol but it def reminds me to see and respect the good examples of it being the Great Carl Lentz, it would be an honor actually to shake his hand and tell him thank you for expressing things in such a way as this here, and with out due a very big thanks and much love to Emmanuel Acho as well. Loved this.. I am black and my husband and I had a deep conversation about this. We even expanded to racism in our own race and also classism. This is a great teaching tool for the body of Christ and so many more. Yes teach your children that its not okay for them to be racist either.

Emmanuel I’d love to see a similar conversation with a Rabbi or other Jewish religious leader. The great Jewish sage Hillel said that the point of the entire Torah is to “Love your neighbor as yourself” and the rest is just commentary. So Jewish people forever have always tried to help oppressed people seek justice and equality
