4:10 - Conan O’Brien cracks me the hell up! I love how he properly properly pronounced Jake, Maggie, and their dad Stephen’s family name: Gyllenhaal, YEE-LUN-HAUL. He’s just leaning in and putting heavily emphasized respect on that. I love it!!
The only names on this list that I didn't know how to pronounce were Quvenzhane, Wasikowska, and Gyllenhaal. In Britain we all naturally pronounce the other names the way they said is right. And I'm Northern Irish so Saoirse is a given. P.s. Saoirse (with an i) is seer-sha and Saorse (without an i) is sore-sha.
> Teaches people how to pronounce Wasikowska > pronounces it wrong xD It's Vah-she-kov-skah. The second syllable should be very soft, certainly not a "see".
Charlize Theron is originally from South-Africa. She changed how you pronounce her surname when she became famous. Theron is an Afrikaans (one of South Africa's many languages) surname, and it is pronounces TE-RON. Afrikaans is my First language . so i am 100% sure that you pronounces her surname TE-RON. She just changed it when she became famous
Yep, Im a Afrikaans South African and Theron is a VERY common afrikaans surname, what a sjame the video that tells you how to pronounce names got it wrong. haha

The “how to pronounce” joke in Young Frankenstein - German names you should pronounce the second vowel. Think of a stein of beer. But with composer/conductors Elmer Bernstein (Hollywood) and Leonard Bernstein (New York), Elmer pronounced his name "BERN-steen", and Leonard used "BERN-styne". They were not related.
The Rhianna one is stupid, that's just the difference of how the "a" is pronounced in British and American English. Just like any other word involving the letter "a", like "and", "class", "can" and many more. And for those who's name isn't pronounced as it's spelt, it's not other people's fault for mispronouncing it, it's your fault for not adjusting the pronunciation to the language of your country (e.g. if you were born and grew up in USA don't pronounce your name the French way?) or your fault for not going back to live in the country where the origin of that pronunciation is from (i.e. if you want it pronounced the proper French way go live in France).
+Bell Gustafsson I didn't say the words are pronounced differently, I said British and Americans pronounce the letter A in words differently, therefore making words such as "and" and "can" sound slightly different due to the accent, which is exactly the case with Rhianna's name. See how British and Americans pronounce the word "aunt" and you'll see what I mean.
I heard Mia saying her last name's pronunciation is "Wa-shi-ko-wska" and i learned to pronounce it like that (still, she said that is english pronunciation because in Polish they say "Wa-si-ko-wska)
yes, I'm Polish and we say Wasikowska :) I was suprised when I found out how American say name of Polish Nobel price winner Lech Wałęsa. It was "Lek Wolenza" and I didn't understand it. It should be V A Ł (it sounds like "w" when you say way) Ę (it sounds like "eng" when you say lenght) S (like sign) A :D Not easy to say ;)
lol lots of people are like "omg i cant pronounce your name, do you have a nickname?" um... if you can pronounce supercalifragilisticexpialadocious, you can pronounce names/terms other than traditional Eurocentric American names.
+Sol Reategui Just like my name is pronounced Jew-Lee-An-Uh. It' be Jew-Lee-On-Uh if my name only had one N in it but I have two. Most of the time it depends on where you're from though. I rarely run into people who say my name correctly.
+Julianna Harrell OMG WE HAVE THE SAME NAME... SPELT THE SAME AND EVERYTHING!!! I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE ELSE WITH THIS NAME BEFORE. My one is pronounced anna and not arna though.
It's French....just go to google...beouf is the french word for beef...his name is only spelled a bit differently but as far as I know pronounced the same;)))
Well I don't see the minor sound differences as 'mispronunciations', I just see it as a different culture's way of saying it. For example my name is pronounced 'ah-lih-sa' but I go to a French immersion school and when in class we speak only French and my teachers and classmates will pronounce it 'ah-lee-saa' but outside class they say it how it normally is. Hope this made sense
I feel this pain in a big way and have my entire life. My name is properly pronounced, maybe, 5-10%. I think most people with this issue quickly give up on the importance of proper pronunciation. I've felt like not giving up would be arrogant. I've even modified my last name for restaurants because I've missed out on tables in crowded spots so many times. In the grand scheme of life, it's just a minor blip but it does get old. I have 10 year + friends who forget how to say my last time and have, many times, introduced me to others improperly. I was introduced to my wife the wrong way and the first thing she said, "very interesting name, I've never heard of it before.....how do you say it?" Now she has to deal with it everyday.
Memi Ed the one she prefers is Reee-anna like you would pronounce Remember and how most Americans pronounce it as Ry-anna like you would pronounce Ryan.
No, most people say "Ree-ahna" (like the girl from Frozen.) Personally though, I think if her mother pronounces it "Ree-ahna" and not "Ree-anna" (what the video is saying is the correct pronunciation,) then her mother is correct. I'm sure she would know better than a random YT channel.
Rihanna says she doent care people mispronounce her name wrong. Anyways they both sound so similar to each other only Rihanna herself would hear the slight difference.
Amanda Seyfried pronounces wrong her own name. She has German ancestors. Seyfried (Seifried) is a common German name. It's a variant form of the forename Siegfried and the "ie" in "fried" is a long German iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii (in English a long eeeee)
isabeau lewis Haha, that's the difference between German and English. Germans pronounce an i like an English e. And the technical term for "ie" is "long i". Therefore iiiiiiiiiiiiii. :)
***** oops, that's what i meant, sorry. I just wanted to clarify it for the english people (i'm canadian but i speak german) but yeah, i get what you're saying because german i is pronounced like english e :)
I don't think people should freak out when someone can't pronounce their name perfectly... I have a Finnish name and I don't get offended when people always say it wierdly, it's just kind of fun :D
The originally German surnames can be pronounced the German way (the way Amanda Seyfried's sister does is kinda German) or the American English way. Both are correct which makes it easier. But I as a German am always struggling how to pronounce German names when I speak English or Spanish. When I pronounce it correctly people mostly don't understand, but I don't really like saying these words with false pronunciation..
And people want to give their kids unique names. It's really not that amazing to have a unique name. My name is Kirstine and honestly can't count all those times when I've been called either Christine or Christina. I had an English teacher for three years and she never learned my name despite everyone in my class correcting her every time. It's really not fun to have an unique name, just saying!
Yours is more of a different spelling of a common name. My friend is named Marlessia (idk what her mom though) and people are always screwing up her name
love Harris As in her first name? That has never been a problem for almost anyone. The letters basically spell out the sounds. And her last name is simply Coleman, so her name isn't even hard.
Anna Engel Wrong! I just changed it for RUclips because I didn't want my friends to know who I was. My name is Rhianna. And it is pronounced the same as the popstar, unfortunately. But don't worry, I was born long before she was famous XD
in an screen test/interview by Lynn Hirshberg for W Magazine the video starts with mia actually saying her last name, which is pronounced 'VAH-SHE-KOVSKA''. Not vah-she-kahv-skuh.
Juli Yeah I watched that clip too and she said it right. I wish people (all of them) would pronounce the names and surnames correctly, not "americanize" it...
From what I heard on the interview with Peers Morgan she said Tron. But anyway, afrikaans is not how people pronounce her name. One way or another. Let' not get into arguing because of someone's surname.
I don’t know why she didn’t correct him when she had the chance. She pronounces it the correct way, like “Trrohn”, in her Vanity Fair lie detector interview with Seth Rogan.
Hi, South African here... Actually, Charlize's surname is pronounced Tee-Rohn. Afrikaans speaking people usually say the name faster, making it sound like "Tron".
Liesl James She has done other videos where she says her name Afrikaans-style, but for English this I guess is the better way. She does speak the language though so of course she can say her own name...
I've always said Amanda Seyfried's name right.I didn't know it was mispronounced by so many people. I actually thought I was mispronouncing her name wrong.
"...like boyfriends, and bosses, and even her own mother!" ermmmm, isn't your mother the person who names you and thus the person who gets to decide the correct pronunciation of said name?
I though a long time ago this was how you pronounced Hasley hay-sa-ley but I knew how to pronounce Halsey when I watched a interview they said it like this hall-sley

Demi Ladipo-Eki So people are expected to know the pronunciation of a name in all languages/accents? Learn something new everyday.
+Mirokism There is nothing wrong in learning new information everyday.
+Mirokism You're right it is our own faults because we all get to choose our own name.
Gyllenhaal (Gyllenhål)= golden hole. such a strange name
I just saw this as I was looking for mispronounced names and will use your example- my name is Maroulio and I do not have or want a nickname.
i heard rihanna being pronounced the same, WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?
the a
+Sol Reategui REE-AH-NA or REE-AN-NA
+johnNYgoesLA REE-ANNA
+Sol Reategui Just like my name is pronounced Jew-Lee-An-Uh. It' be Jew-Lee-On-Uh if my name only had one N in it but I have two. Most of the time it depends on where you're from though. I rarely run into people who say my name correctly.
+Julianna Harrell OMG WE HAVE THE SAME NAME... SPELT THE SAME AND EVERYTHING!!! I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE ELSE WITH THIS NAME BEFORE.
My one is pronounced anna and not arna though.
Totally understand this I just use Stephanie my name is Estefania
shia labeouf should've been on here bc I have litteraly no idea how to pronounce his name
It's French....just go to google...beouf is the french word for beef...his name is only spelled a bit differently but as far as I know pronounced the same;)))
Shy-ah-la-buff
+ViviliciousLady FRENCH for beef is BOEUF, Beouf is a mispelling that has happend in canada or maybe in louisiana whithin the cajun people
+ViviliciousLady So Chiaseed the Beef. Got it.
+JOSE LUIS MARTÍNEZ RODRÍGUEZ Lol I'm Canadian and it's not Beouf
I was introduced to my wife the wrong way and the first thing she said, "very interesting name, I've never heard of it before.....how do you say it?" Now she has to deal with it everyday.
oh, girl, that voice, hurts
Im from the UK and I say Rhianna the right way.
Ditto
+A Gay Talking Cat what does that nean
I mean mean
***** dont say that to me please. I get 10 out of 10 in spelling tests at primary school. So yeah, I can spell it it's just auto correct
+Tia Scarlett Trinder
Lmao you sound like a stuck up 11 year old idiot.
I was mentally singing "Oh na, nah what's my name?!" at the Rihanna one.
Screw it i don't even know how to pronounce my last name
That's pretty bad :/
Miku Hatsune Piano Piano? PE-an-oh.
I don't know the difference in Rihanna name 😂😂
Memi Ed the one she prefers is Reee-anna like you would pronounce Remember and how most Americans pronounce it as Ry-anna like you would pronounce Ryan.
No, most people say "Ree-ahna" (like the girl from Frozen.) Personally though, I think if her mother pronounces it "Ree-ahna" and not "Ree-anna" (what the video is saying is the correct pronunciation,) then her mother is correct. I'm sure she would know better than a random YT channel.
LexiColey MUA, Rihanna literally says that her name is pronounced "Re-anna."
It’s “Ann”, not “Onn”
Rihanna says she doent care people mispronounce her name wrong. Anyways they both sound so similar to each other only Rihanna herself would hear the slight difference.
Amanda Seyfried pronounces wrong her own name. She has German ancestors. Seyfried (Seifried) is a common German name. It's a variant form of the forename Siegfried and the "ie" in "fried" is a long German iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii (in English a long eeeee)
Long eeeeeeeee but yeah
isabeau lewis
Haha, that's the difference between German and English. Germans pronounce an i like an English e. And the technical term for "ie" is "long i". Therefore iiiiiiiiiiiiii. :)
***** oops, that's what i meant, sorry. I just wanted to clarify it for the english people (i'm canadian but i speak german) but yeah, i get what you're saying because german i is pronounced like english e :)
isabeau lewis
Ohhh yes right..now I understand! I forgot that English people don't understand what I mean with a long iiii. :)
***** that's okay :)
I don't think people should freak out when someone can't pronounce their name perfectly... I have a Finnish name and I don't get offended when people always say it wierdly, it's just kind of fun :D
I've always said those names differently. Thanks for clearing it up Clevver news!
My friend is named Marlessia (idk what her mom though) and people are always screwing up her name
my name is khallai, pronounced kuhlayuh and I normally get called Kayla, kuhlay, even kuhlolly
rainbow llamas I know, but people still mess my name up, and the name Kirstine is no where near popular in my country :)
It isn't exactly "unique", it's just writed differently.
Lady Pandicorn It can still be unique. It's not a common name here in Denmark
Stellan and Alexander Skargård should be on this list... No American can't say it correctly
(exept riri) who are they?
You must live under a rock then.... all of them may not be super famous but they are still pretty famous
i have no idea either
oh c'mon. not even jake?
*****
nah
Tacko Btw wow.
(Unsure if anyone else already said it)- it’s saoirse like INTERTIA. she says it in an interview with Steven Colbert. Not seer-sha. Sir-sha.
Where is Cam-illa Cabe-ll-o??
It's pronounced Cam-ee-la Cabe-yo y'all!!!!!!
She forgot zendaya lots of people pronounce her name wrog** sorry if i spelled it wrong***
Wrong
love Harris As in her first name? That has never been a problem for almost anyone. The letters basically spell out the sounds. And her last name is simply Coleman, so her name isn't even hard.
Maybe some people have a hard time with the end of the word, maybe with the first A. Is that what you mean?
+love Harris her name is pronounced zenDAYa. people keep saying zenDIEa
Oh. Rihanna pronounces her name like mine. I'm Rhianna.
+Anna McCloud People mispronounce my name all the time too
+Anna McCloud Your name is Anna like mine not Rhianna
Anna Engel Wrong! I just changed it for RUclips because I didn't want my friends to know who I was. My name is Rhianna. And it is pronounced the same as the popstar, unfortunately. But don't worry, I was born long before she was famous XD
+Anna McCloud Oh sorry
in an screen test/interview by Lynn Hirshberg for W Magazine the video starts with mia actually saying her last name, which is pronounced 'VAH-SHE-KOVSKA''. Not vah-she-kahv-skuh.
Kwuhvenzhuhnay beautiful name for a beautiful girl 💗
it's quvenzhané ffs
+sawyers ?

+sawyers YWC
cj bathan bitch that's ain't her name. who asked you doe, fuck off
what about Jade Thirlwall and Lauren jauregui? HAHAHA
Jade Thirlwall is not really confusing...perhaps many people just forget to pronounce the l in her last name
And Camila cabello
+Brittany Burke also its not ca-mill-ah its ca-mee-la and its not ca-be-llo it's ca-be-yo
+Brittany Burke also its not ca-mill-ah its ca-mee-la and its not ca-be-llo it's ca-be-yo
+maddie woah are you serious... shit
In reality, even Charlize said her last name wrong. It's Tron not Theron.
Juli Yeah I watched that clip too and she said it right. I wish people (all of them) would pronounce the names and surnames correctly, not "americanize" it...
It's not thron either. It's Teron. The H is silent. A boksburg chick who forgot her own roots.
Yeah. Basically it's "Tron".
Ahhh, no. It's not Tron. She Isent a robot. It's Te-Ron. The H is silent, you still pronounce the e.
From what I heard on the interview with Peers Morgan she said Tron. But anyway, afrikaans is not how people pronounce her name. One way or another. Let' not get into arguing because of someone's surname.
There was a kid in my class who’s name started with a W who came from Poland and we thought his name was Wiktor for 7 months.
ThatFuzzyNarwhal 😂💀
😁😁😁
Amanda Seyfried's sister actually pronounces it right.
Charlize Theron is pronounced incorrectly - her surname is South African Afrikaans .. and is pronounced Te-ronn ..
Richard Grossi yessss I can't believe she can't even pronounce her OWN name correctly. She completely forgot where she came from
Tyroneeee
Richard Grossi yes thank you!😜😂
I don’t know why she didn’t correct him when she had the chance. She pronounces it the correct way, like “Trrohn”, in her Vanity Fair lie detector interview with Seth Rogan.
Since when the fuck is Rhianna's name Rheanna?! I've said Rhianna my whole life.
Apparently since forever lmfao
I've always said it like Rhe- Awna.
+Chestney Chiller I've heard her pronounce her own name both ways. She probably just goes with the flow, but in her mind thinking, it's REE ANNA.
It's always been Rihanna. REE ANNE UH.
Rihanna* (Ree-anne-ah)
Byun Baekhyun should be on the list
Who agrees?
Asma Almannaei kpop everywhere😍
Asma Almannaei YES!!! So should Chanyeol
BamBam real name should be on here
And Jungkook lol
Hi, South African here... Actually, Charlize's surname is pronounced Tee-Rohn. Afrikaans speaking people usually say the name faster, making it sound like "Tron".
Liesl James, Charlize shed her South African identity a while ago though 😔 even her accent is mostly american
Liesl James She has done other videos where she says her name Afrikaans-style, but for English this I guess is the better way. She does speak the language though so of course she can say her own name...
I don't understand how people get Cindy from Sydney. It makes me so angry when people do this
Some ppl spell it cidny so they might be used to pronouncing the name like that
What about avril lavine ?
Lavigne.... It's Lavigne.... I'm sorry I had to
Anne ^ Its Adam Levine!!😂😂😂 its AVRIL LAVIGNE and ADAM LEVINE !! Lol
If you know French, Avril's name is really easy to pronounce.
I've always said Amanda Seyfried's name right.I didn't know it was mispronounced by so many people. I actually thought I was mispronouncing her name wrong.
Well actually you're wrong if you want to say it originally in German but it's okay just pronounce it how The owner of the name pronounces is FINE.
I still want to know how to pronounce Vic mignogna
+jacob blackstock Its Vic Min-Ee-Own-a
+Karina Luvs You c: yay, anime people! lol sorry xD
"...like boyfriends, and bosses, and even her own mother!"
ermmmm, isn't your mother the person who names you and thus the person who gets to decide the correct pronunciation of said name?
Kate Smorenburg that's what I said! Like hellooo!!
Unless the mom did not name her.
I think “Rihanna” is her stage name. That’s not her real name. That’s why her mother can’t pronouce it correctly.
@@ma.karenqueenoccianas9506 Nope it's Robyn Rihanna Fenty.
and no one ever believed me that Jake Gyllenhall is pronounced like that
I though a long time ago this was how you pronounced Hasley hay-sa-ley but I knew how to pronounce Halsey when I watched a interview they said it like this hall-sley
the last one was the easiest for me to pronouce but it just because im swedish
Well of course
Wow thanks captain fucking obvious...
+Matilda “Matte” Bergström It's all over your name, you didn't even have to say that you were Swedish.. xP
+Matilda “Matte” Bergström Well I'm even danish and I found it easy to pronounce so I was like "how is it hard for you?" when she mentioned it.
I already pronounced these properly
the voice if the speaker is annoying af
in irish AOI is usually pronounced as EE. Like in the name Aoife
