    Hello, I’m Joe - I’m a guitar player, singer-songwriter, producer, recording engineer and teacher!
    On this channel you’ll find my original songs, covers and solo fingerstyle guitar arrangements. My favorite music doesn’t fit neatly in a box so you may hear me play folk, blues, jazz, & classic rock - you can call it what you want; I feel honored to speak this timeless language of melody, harmony & rhythm.
    I was born on May 25th 1991 in Kempsey, NSW, Australia. Since 2010 I have been based in the US and currently live in the Rocky Mountains of Montana with my wife, Genevieve (who teaches illustration on RUclips!).
    I play Maton acoustic guitars, made in Australia (just like me) and am very proud to have my own signature instrument, the JR Signature!
    In addition to song performances, you will also find guitar lessons, chord breakdowns, TAB, tutorials, gear reviews and other guitarist related content to help you stay inspired on the instrument.
    I stream high quality livestream concerts regularly, if you’d like to be notified when I announce a livestream, you can put your email in here: joes.lnk.to/LivestreamEmail

    Joe shows just how this "arranging" is real useable for a seasoned player.
    Tie together what you know & what is needed. Changing register, intros, endings, harmonics, choice of the song. Most excellent tips to make your 3 chord song grow!

    Years ago I was sailing in the Caribbean and I ran into a guy who’s uncle played the guitar and I stayed up with him for hours in the middle of the night playing with him. Apparently he had been committed to a mental hospital and had spent several decades there and his nephew had just gotten him out. We were in Red Hook, St Thomas. We smoked a joint and played, sitting in the cockpit of my boat. I played what I usually play. Mississippi John hurt and 1920s honky tonk piano pieces. He then played Freight Train and Creole Belle but every melody note a harmonic. I was astounded and I can still remember the magic in that moment. He picked with his second and third fingers and used the index finger to gently tap the melody note string 12 frets up from the fretted note on the left hand at precisely the right moment. I never saw him again but I will never forget it. It was magical.
    It is lost on people with tin ears. There are people who cannot tell that the first and last note in a scale are the same note. There are people who are not bothered of someone plays the first seven notes of the scale and doesn’t play the eighth. There are people who don’t feel a seventh of the I is begging for the IV. I’m married to one. Vayismere. Thankfully she has other wonderful qualities.

    Melody, harmony, rhythm. :)
    Thanks a lot Joe, always wondered about that topic! I have a question about your writing style: what part of the song (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.) do you start with usually or is it just a nice musical idea or just the melody?
    I struggle to create a complete piece of music, because most of the time I have a nice rhytmic thing going on with some chords (I usually think that such a thing could work as a verse) but I often fail to continue it. I have a hard time developping a chorus for example. Can you make a video about your approach on this?
    Cheers from Hungary! ;)

    Once you’ve learned a piece and established the melody, harmony and rhythm, are there any more pointers you can give with regards to really polishing it and dialling in the chops to play it clean (other than repetition/playing it until you can’t get it wrong)? I’m trying to establish whether it’s my approach, or maybe a focus issue I’m struggling with (or both, or neither and I just need to play it more). Thanks for this video anyway, Joe, it’s a helpful insight into the process.

    • @RyanChenMusic
      @RyanChenMusic 2 года назад +1

      Record yourself and listen back. I find once I do that it's easy to see what I need to adjust (e.g. I'm cutting off melody notes too short, need the melody to come out more in this part, slowing down/speeding up, etc)

    • @parsnipfingers
      @parsnipfingers 2 года назад

      Yes, I think recording is probably the best way of exposing problems/weaknesses - I have lots of those; I’m sure I’ve got somebody else’s share by mistake! Red light syndrome is a harsh taskmaster too (if guitars were cheaper/I was wealthier I’m sure I’d have smashed a few by now).
      I find that slowing right down can be useful sometimes. It provides an opportunity to micro-manage finger position and where the thumb is planted, in order to facilitate smooth transitions once you come back up to tempo.
      So with that in mind, and having played the piece an unearthly number of times, how do you nail down the reason why it doesn’t appear to be possible to get a good take, let alone deliver it consistently clean? It seems some days that the more I play it the worse it becomes 🤪.
      Could be that I just need more repetitions, and I’ve wondered if I’m losing focus because I’ve played it so much it’s starting to make my eye twitch. Maybe poor technique or that the piece is simply on the edge of being too difficult (although aren’t they all when you first start learning them). Maybe it’s all of the above, or something else. Maybe I’m just bad at it and there’s no hope for me.
      I’ve learned that perfection doesn’t really exist and that pro’s are extremely proficient in covering up/playing through their flubs/fudges. Joe’s playing is incredibly clean, though, and I want to know what witchcraft is involved. If I had a soul I’d have swapped it for chocolate or cakes by now, let alone guitar skills.

      @@parsnipfingers Totally agree with Ryan on recording and listening back. Your question is really about playing and not arranging. Check my playlist of videos about fingerstyle playing. I have a few thoughts reading your message. The first is, what is your goal? Once we identify the goal we have something to work towards. A great goal could be playing x number of gigs or recording x number of videos or anything really. Then it's a case of preparing the best you can, then getting out there and doing it. By doing it, you learn what works and what doesn't and you try again! You work on visualizing what it is like to perform or play well and you keep refining your practice. That's how I do it. When i read the phrase 'maybe i'm just bad and there's no hope for me' - I think that is absolute nonsense. You're right that perfection doesn't exist - to me music is about joy, and I love sharing it with others. You can drive yourself nuts in the practice room if you don't have something you are practicing for. And practicing for the love of it is a GREAT reason. I hope that makes sense!! Rock on and thanks for the question

    • @parsnipfingers
      @parsnipfingers 2 года назад

      @@Joe_Robinson thanks for taking the time to respond like this.
      I also agree with Ryan about recording, which is great apart from that as soon as I hit the record button I become incapable of playing anything without messing it up.
      "Your question is really about playing and not arranging" - yes it is, and now I feel bad that I should have asked about this on a different video. I'm sorry about that.
      "What is your goal?" - The goal is to play the piece I've learned consistently clean at tempo. Day after day working on the same piece without any apparent improvement becomes demoralising after a while.
      It’s probably a case of refining my practice, as you said. I think I’ve lost focus when I probably should focus in closer on particular areas.

      @@parsnipfingers I took a look on your channel and listened to the happy birthday arrangement, you sound great, beautiful chords. My main suggestion would be to work on getting the left hand to loosen up, i think that will really help with accuracy. Your phrasing and tone is really nice

    What you for got to tell people, is that before they try this, they need to know some music theory. You changed easily from one key to another and that most people don't know how to do. So, it looks like you took an enormous amount of music theory. Right? Let people know what they should know before they look at this video, don't hold back information.
