I watched a recent video where folks had poked JR in the ribs over technique or his performance. Joe Robinson is a wonderful teacher. No one else teaching on RUclips is as thorough, detailed, or considerate. I am 71. I am loving learning what I can from Joe. I am challenged, excited, and grateful for the lessons. Joe is a wonderful resource for us guitar players. If you feel a need to criticize this guy watch him play. If you still feel the need to criticize watch the video again. Eventually you will get it….
1. Keeping relaxed right hand 2. Tempo/timing-practice with metronome 3. Dynamics-practice playing loudly and softly 4. Getting melody to speak and be clear 5. Work on the flow in your playing-muscle memory and playing with relaxed technique
One thing I noticed is that controlling dynamics across the strings depend on how well the instrument is balanced across the strings, specifically volume and action.
Fingerstyle rules! That first tip, about the left hand is important to me. I developed a "death grip" from playing cheap guitars with poor action when I was a kid. Hopefully your advice will help me break out of that habit.
Great show in GB on Sunday night. I was there and truly amazed by yours and Tommy's talents. Your willingness to share your experiences and techniques is awesome. This is something I continue to do in my playing, and I learned a few new things today. Thanks!
These little suttlities in guitar playing are truly a big part & very important to the overall musical execution of a well put together composition. Thank you Joe. You are truly a great inspiration to me to complete, copyright, publish & record over 40 songs I have written. Since the lockdown caused by COVID and a bout with Lyme disease I am hearing extensive completion of melody lines that I had hit impasses with. Tommy Emanuel & you have got me now using all five fingers & capable of different rhythms. It's like a switch has been turned on in my head & I am also writing non stop new compositions. A lot of this is because in a big way of your influence. Hope to record with you one day. Cheers & God Bless both you & Tommy Emmanuel.
Fingerstyle Rules! Love these tips. As a beginner I sometimes find it to know what to focus on. These tips are really useful. Thank you, Joe. Much appreciated. 👍
Fingerstyle Rules! Great tips there Joe, especially the relaxing muscles part. I've had to keep reminding myself that, as I have tendonitis and this helps.
Hi Joe I am a licensed physical therapist here in NYC and all your warmup stretches are absolutely great. I use them every practice session. They really help me keep both hands relaxed.
I am actually a drummer and chunk away on guitar occasionally but saw Tommy in Hamilton NZ and totally loved everything about his show and command of both his instrument and the crowd as well. I have since watched as many of his and your videos as I can, would love to see you both together live one day here in NZ. Thanks for your FB lives, sharing knowledge of your amazing gift and for your patience shown to EVERYONE. Fingerstyle rules!!!
Going thru all your Do This videos Joe, just healing from a right arm shoulder replacement and doing well but I'm so rusty. JFYI I am exactly eleven days older than Tommy! Thinking of you and your youth, you are so blessed, and yes the rules apply. Thanks Joe!
Wow Joe - I'm in the Theatre Management business (Tommy has played in some venues my company manages). You're promoter (or this venue) on this night had pretty nice hospitality! John Gig Harbor, WA
Great video; thanks for the great tips Joe. My rhythm is my weakness. I am going to take your's and Tommy's advice and start using my metronome more during practice. I have started to try thinking of it this way. Melody and Harmony are "what notes to play" while Rhythm is "when to play the notes" (or not play the notes as the case may be). Thanks, John Gig Harbor, WA
Thanks for sharing Joe - this is gold. I realize now that those moments when I’m the zone playing my best is when my left hand is relaxed. Finger style rules!
Great tips, thanks a lot! I think 3 & 4 go nicely together in the sense that one needs to practice the dynamics not only of different notes in the melody but particularly between the melody and the bassline/chords underneath, to make the melody stand out - as if the parts were played by two or three different musicians, with every part having its own purpose. When I first learn a song just getting the notes correctly is more than enough, and then later when muscle memory improves I can begin to work on dynamics to make the piece less static. This I find to be one of the most challenging parts about playing fingerstyle, as you really have to be in tune with the piece and essentially behave as if you were a group of players.
Fingerstyle rules. Thanks Joe. Great information. I appreciate you taking the time to give us some of your knowledge and suggestions. Will be looking for more content as it comes in.
Fingerstyle rules! Great tips bro as you're an AMAZING guitarists & it's so cool you've toured with Tommy Emmanuel as he's PHENOMENAL too! Keep rockin' bro!
Thank you Joe, I’m one of those people with the tense left hand. Appreciate your teaching. Having trouble with using a thumb pick. “Finger style rules “.

One the best sharing I’ve ever seen on RUclips. I’ve realised that after 40 years my left hand is not relaxed when playing.
Keeping the left hand relaxed is so important and I don't hear many people discussing it!! Thanks for sharing Josef, all the best with your playing.
