Hello, I’m Joe - I’m a guitar player, singer-songwriter, producer, recording engineer and teacher!
On this channel you’ll find my original songs, covers and solo fingerstyle guitar arrangements. My favorite music doesn’t fit neatly in a box so you may hear me play folk, blues, jazz, & classic rock - you can call it what you want; I feel honored to speak this timeless language of melody, harmony & rhythm.
I was born on May 25th 1991 in Kempsey, NSW, Australia. Since 2010 I have been based in the US and currently live in the Rocky Mountains of Montana with my wife, Genevieve (who teaches illustration on RUclips!).
I play Maton acoustic guitars, made in Australia (just like me) and am very proud to have my own signature instrument, the JR Signature!
In addition to song performances, you will also find guitar lessons, chord breakdowns, TAB, tutorials, gear reviews and other guitarist related content to help you stay inspired on the instrument.

I saw you play years ago in Annapolis, Md. You inspired me to learn how to learn the guitar. I really appreciated how you referenced “waves” at the end. During the pandemic we had to home school our kids, and I just couldn’t maintain a good practice routine. It’s been hard to overcome the inertia from 18 months away from the instrument, but it’s happening. You’re an inspiration. Thank you.

Deliberate practice. I met you last year after you performed in Green Bay, Wisconsin with Tommy Emmanuel. I thanked you for playing "Misty" and told you briefly about my long time mentor/teacher who had recently passed. I've been looking for a new teacher as I've been just working/playing alone. I'm going to check out your courses. There is one thing about you that reminds me of my old teacher and that is he had no ego, was a good listener, and never gave a sense of judgement but rather encouragement. Great video and I hope to see you perform again someday.

I just learned for me that being way to lazy I had to accept to stay on a very low technical level or even when I develope, it is going very slow. I would have wished I'd met your approach 50 years ago... now being 61 and enjoying music as a dilettante which is fine too. Go your way and make people happy with your beautiful music!

Being older and just recently, finally, learning to play guitar, deliberate practice has been the key to a higher rate of progress in the shorter time I have left on this spinning rock. I only wish I had not wasted so many years of my early life practicing and learning to play a different instrument that I never wanted to play in the first place. It was decades before I felt inspired enough to pick up an instrument again! Thank, Joe, for your inspiring videos, arrangements and fantastic courses.

I suspect many people think guitar is a relatively easy instrument to learn
since so many people pick it up and try to play, but I'm here to tell you it ain't
so if you plan to do much with the instrument. That's why Joe's recommendations
on practice are important and workable.

    Deliberate practice.
After about 60 yrs of playing I just recently figured out what you mentioned on practicing. I don't know much about reading notes or crazy chords but I manage to play alot of those chords you and many others do. But to play an intricate fingerstyle tune and then forget when under "pressure" or I should say in front of people, I often would draw a blank at some part of the song. But to remember best is when I go over that part leading to the lost segment and after a few times it finally will come back to me out of the clear blue. More like a familiar feeling than remembering and there it is. Exactly what you said, "muscle memory".

"Deliberate practice" - That, combined with *extensive* practice 8-), is how this humble 30-year-old guitarist has built up the wisdom of a 50-year-old master. Thanks for sharing these insights, Joe. Guitar is my avocation rather than my vocation, so I'm not seeking the level of mastery of a pro, but I still find this kind of information helpful as I navigate my less ambitious musical journey. -Tom

By the way, I’m 73, played rhythm guitar & sang in a rock group back in the 60’s until i got drafted into the U.S. Army; since then, for the past 50 years on-and-off I’ve been trying to teach myself fingerpicking without much success! However, it wasn’t until I started taking your ‘Fingerstyle’ courses on Udemy that my Fingerstyle guitar playing skills continue to improve beyond my wildest dreams! THANK YOU - You are truly an inspiration! … Almost forgot to mention: Yesterday (10/29/21) I messaged you a couple questions directly through the Udemy course - it’s about my new Maton “The J. R. I really enjoyed your video and I try to put in some deliberate practice every day. I do get the muscle memory thing. I've been playing long enough to know it works for chords and some fingerpicking patterns. But have you ever tried playing a left handed guitar when you play right.? It's all muscle memory. However, when it comes to any lead playing I fall to the floor. Many of us know our own weaknesses but yet we don't follow a regimented practice routine. I also think the younger you are the better your able to be trained. The young ones that follow the music teacher's advice and practice their homework become the best players most of the time. The older ones rebel and tend to do their own thing. They only ever become average at best. However if the passion isn't there to play, you can't force it. I think a high percentage of newbies think it is a lot easier to learn and even a higher percentage than that, just noodle around and not even take the time to learn the song all the way through. Even if the songs are fairly simple in nature, it's a good start the more songs you know the more you might be interested to keep yourself learning. Nothing worth while comes easy and there is always a price to pay.
