What are your biggest guitar challenges?

      Jerry Reed ;-)

My biggest challenge is probably songwriting and fingerstyle arrangements, i can got a good melody, but so hard to arrange it.

Another biggest challenge is probably the place I am, in these early days i realized that the place I am now is also the greatest challenge ever, to me

I'm 67 years old, I've been playing, or let's say I started playing when I was a teenager. I have never obtained anywhere near the ability you have. But then again, I have never put into it what you have. We have the same influences though. Chet, Jerry, Tommy, etc. You are my newest guitar hero. You're an inspiration young man, maybe the best ever to someone young who loves music. I will be subscribing to your courses. Sincerely, Denny Rich

Good message. I started playing about 20 years ago but gave up in frustration after a couple of years. I have very small hands and couldn't make a bar code to save my life. Then a couple of weeks ago, I saw a Norman's Rare Guitars video of several very young children playing really well and decided that if they could learn, I could too. So I've started playing again, signed up for one of your courses and start lessons locally on Tuesday. I'm retired now and have all the time in the world for playing and learning and luckily I found your videos and your site at the same time as I was digging my guitar out of the back of the closet. Wish me luck.

It is a process but like most processes the journey is more interesting than the destination. I’m just getting back in the saddle with the guitar after 25 year hiatus and finding I’m playing better now at 58 than when i was in my teens and twenties because i am doing more than just memorizing notes. I’ve always lived by the maxim that you learn more from your failures than your successes. You learn even more by observing other peoples experiences (and failures) so thanks for sharing your challenges

Thanks for those insights Joe! I, for one, am glad that you've been forced to move online as it has made your music available to those of us a long way from Nashville! I look forward to a very different musical journey but can relate to a lot of what you talk about.
I dedicated my early life to a different dream and then raised a family. Now I'd like to spend some quality time on music in my retirement (a couple of years away). Still dreaming!

It is a process. Chet Atkins I believe said, "the reason I keep playing is because I haven't learned to do it right yet". I relate to that in a huge way. I have been playing for nearly 60 years. My biggest challenge nowadays is stiff fingers. My biggest challenge in the early years was like yours not enough hours in the day, as well as no one to play with. I would have loved to have had youtube back then!

Oh my, where do I start? I play mainly both bluegrass flat picking and fingerstyle. Left hand strength-barre chords and making smooth transitions in finger style songs. Not overplaying in solos and focusing and playing melody-based phrases. Getting a good reliable right hand that is tension free, particularly in my elbow. Getting out of my own way and not overthinking things, or like you, also not hard on myself enough at times. Getting a good live acoustic sound--playing into a mic and cutting over the band in bluegrass gigs and getting a good plugged in sound the rest of the time. Songwriting--I've written many instrumental finger style tunes but never written a song with lyrics. I could go on!

It is definitely a process!! A fun and extremely frustrating one at that! I can relate very closely with the tempo issues lol, even my instructor tells me to slow it way way down. I know what I'm supposed to do in my head but it's like my hands just don't want to listen! Thats one of my greatest guitar challenges, that and finding enough time in my day to really get adequate practice. Thanks for the content Joe. Really enjoy hearing about other's musical journies 🤙

It’s a process. This may have been one of the most inspiring videos I’ve ever seen. It’s hard for your fans like me to envision you with challenges, You’re always so sincere and that’s what makes the videos you make without a guitar in your hands, so worthwhile. Thanks for sharing your personal story. I assure you that they are just as beneficial, and great to watch, as your playing instructional videos.

Hi, Joe. Sorry it took me a while to watch this video of yours. I like this part of the quote, "who looks inside, awakes". I agree 100% of that. Distraction is probably the biggest pain in modernity. And I'm glad that you are flourishing as an online guitarist. I hope it continues to work for you while giving you the freedoms to do whatever it is you wanna do. You're one of the best musicians on Earth and seem like you have a great personality. I will keep watching you, wishing you the best the whole time.

It's a process Joe! Thanks for sharing. I like to do the same thing with my students - talk about my challenges and struggles. Aspiring players only get to see the finished result of what pros do. And that can be discouraging. It's great perspective to let students know that everyone struggles and it's a journey. You can't get hung up on where you think you should be. All you can control is the time and effort you put in. It never gets easier. You just learn harder stuff. 😉

My guitar journey was so memorable. I started playing when i was 12, i remembered i do not have my own guitar, I just borrowed one from my friends and they we’re the few one who also thought me all the stuffs as a beginner.. That was around 91-92. After school we usually met each other on the streets and play guitar until midnight. Every day was simply the same routine.. But when i turned into college, i enter Medical school until i became a full pledge Physician and during that days i did not even tried to grab a guitar or borrowed one from my friends for 10 years until the time i went back playing 5 years ago and i now I realized i should have follow my dream to study music instead of becoming a physician which is my true passion.

You’re lucky you were born with “it.” I’m 75. Moved from ukulele to guitar at age 10. Took some lessons from the Maloy brothers in Macon, became pretty good, and began playing in clubs when I was 13. I suspect that by age 15 you were doing things that I was never able to accomplish in my life. Even as a teenager I was struck by how hard some worked at learning guitar and how much they practiced for several years, only to be surpassed by others who had been playing maybe a year or two. Sure, one can practice diligently and become good over time, but it’s no substitute for having that innate ability. That natural ability plus the discipline and desire to study and practice is an unbeatable combination. Unfortunately, even though I still have a good ear and a good instincts for music, these old arthritic fingers won’t allow me to even do what I used to. So, I just watch you and smile and enjoy.

It's a process. I am always practicing and watching some whatever on youtube at the same time. That probably reduces productivity a lot, but I just don't know how to stop doing that. I started to learn the guitar when i was 18. After couple of years, when I was playing in front of my friends and messing up, I was always using the excuse that "I started not that long ago". Now 5 years passed, I am 23, and I still cannot play scales on the guitar, and my playing lacks so much of everything. But I am no longer allowed to use that excuse. This is where you start to face consequences of your actions, and realize, that it is very easy to be a mediocre player, but it takes so much more, to become an actual, solid acoustic player. And even if you perform, and your friends praise you, that does not necessarily mean, that you are worth anything as a musician.
P.S. I am still proud, that I had the willpower to learn how to play royal flush and actually perform it.

    Makes/models?
Only Fender or also Gibson ?
    Which acoustics? Any Taylors?
Still Strat or also Tele or others?
    Amps (Still only Marshall)?
I don't mean to come across as a some weirdo or obnoxious wackdoodle fan. I just love your musicianship and so do my kids. I'd donate organs to work with you.
Speed's OK (ask Mustaine or even Little Richard or The Killer, Jerry Lee). I'm no fan of ballads but we all gotta pay the bills and Coverdale got an extra house out of a "hard" quasi-ballad with"Here I Go Again" just like Frehley did with "Beth". These tunes had me on a Neve, Soundcraft, or other machine to try making good sounds. And then came the record companies.
Keep making your great sounds and please, PLEASE let me know when you're on the right side of the Atlantic.
