Which performance was your favorite? What concept/approach did you find most appealing? Let me know! 🤘
My Top Three are Barry Greene (for concept), Tim Lerch (for tone) and Jonathan Stout (for originality). I watched this video twice and I must say that all of the performers are world class. I did not want to watch it a third time because I would probably have to change my mind...
Thanks for making this possible, Chase Maddox! 👏
Mr. Tim Lerch- but love them all.
Cecil Alexander, Barry Greene, Graham Dechter - especially liked these
cecil reminded me of barney kessell occasionally there, wowzers. He rips but also has sick feel.
Tim Lerch….soo good!
Thank you so much Chase it was a real pleasure to watch this vid and enjoy and be inspired by all of these fine players. I’m honored and more than a bit humbled to have been part of the gang. Tim
Appreciate your work and playing on this!
Tone, taste and telecasters… so true
Your take on this was phenomenal. Thanks so much - inspiring.
I’ve got a bunch of your truefire courses and doing the 7 day trial of solo sensai all day. Thank you so much for helping me to make more beautiful music. I love your lessons cause of your calming presence then I learned you were a zen monk and I thought “that tracks”.
You're lucky to have had such a great player for a teacher.
Definitely!
Tim Lerch, focus, complexity, tones, sounds, cleanliness, timing, oh and an impressive telecaster, and Jonathan Stout, so classic, with the sound and the effortless playing.
Thanks for watching!
I agree. The fist thing that hit me was the tone. Perfect execution.
Musicality and originality and genius also come to mind
That was dope af and I subbed.
My 2 favorite from the video!
Holy cow, Max Light was incredible. I loved that so much
Glad to hear it!
I loved Dan Wilson’s version, so creative and technically dazzling, but he always keeps the melody close by.
Thanks for listening! 🤘
With Barry you gave us The Dessert Before The Main Course, Love him and our RIP Friend Pat Martino ❤
Haha that’s one way to put it! 🙌
Liked them all, but Barry Greene’s chord choices/ arrangement made him my favorite.
Thanks for watching!
Dan Wilson is the craziest man in today's jazz scene😂😂😂
Man is on fire! 🔥
I prefer players that don't go too far out and instead keep in mind what song they're playing. The mood the song has is a very important thing to me. Therefore, Cecil's playing really made me smile! Beautiful single-note runs, smart chord choices and just the right amount of trickery! I could listen to that for hours! ❤
Thanks for listening! 🙌
I loved them ALL, very technical stuff, but yes, Cecil Alexander brought it home 👏🏿👏🏿
@@ChaseMaddox Oh and one more thing... Bends. Way too many people think bending strings is forbidden in jazz. If that were the case, Gábor Szabó would never have made a single record. 😄
I agree with you 100%. I think that is the mark of great musicianship. It’s ok to play outside. But you need to keep the listener knowing where they are in the song.
Cecil Alexander, for his melodic soulful solo, Stout's mastery of chordal swing, and all the others for being so damn good.
Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks so much, cheers!
Jonathan strout did some sick things, loved his swing. Very very cool
Thanks, even with an extra "r" added. Ha!
I thought he’d add some interesting contrast to the other guys. Glad you enjoyed!
Jonathan had just fantastic tones from his guitars.
Around 2011 I attended a Tommy Emmanuel concert at the Florida Theater in Jacksonville. Barry Greene was the guest guitarist. OMG, Barry Greene’s playing is just incredible. He played a few Django pieces with Tommy which were surreal. If you have the chance to hear Barry go do it, he’s a phenomenal musician.
Absolutely! 🤘
Tim Lerch…. The tone! He easily brought new unique beauty to this already beautiful song! All the subtly gorgeous dynamic manipulation he is able to apply to coax this magic from his instrument is so remarkable. Deep, Pure, musical, expressive beauty! Sorry for gushing!
Gush away! 🤘
Graham Dechter is so incredible and this clip is no exception. Thank you!
He really went in on this one! 🤘
Jonathan Stout is such a beast.. real "Pioneer of Jazz guitar" type of player
Absolutely 🤘
Ive never heard of Dan Wilson but his performance blew me away. Loved the Monk bass fills he did and he has amazing chops that fit right into the song. Discovering Dan was alone worth the watching of this video. Max and Cecil were were my 2 other favorites. Great job everyone!
Glad to have introduced you to Dan’s playing! 🤘
Check his work with the late Joey DeFrancesco, e.g. "100 Ways". Amazing player.
Raul Middow, great guitarist that I did not know. Wonder how many more like him that are out there ?
Tims playing is so subtle and and mellow and that is the general goal that I think we should have on a guitar very relaxing not too much tension solo but just beautiful because it fits with the song
Thanks for watching and for your thoughts! 🙏
Great to see this concept brought into the jazz space. I really dig Jonathan Stout’s playing; he’s a modern master of a somewhat lost style. Tim Lerch makes everything sound like warm honey. Just great all around.
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Thanks so much!
@@campusfive I second this, they're all great players but that one really stood out to me for sure
Everyone's performance was amazing; I particularly enjoyed those of Barry Greene and Tim Lerch.
Awesome, thanks Diego! 🤘
Wonderful all around. Thanks for doing this, Chase, and thanks to all of this world-class musicians for playing so great!
Hey Adam! Thanks for checking it out, and glad you appreciate it. I'm a fan of your channel as well 🙏
Max Light, Tim Lerch and John Storie stood out for me. Especially Max Light was interesting and most out of the box.
Thanks for your thoughts! 🙏
Thanks man, honored to be on the clip with so many outstanding guitarists
Enjoyed all the playing and particularly how different everyones approach was. Thanks for doing this.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🤘
Thank you Chase, what a great idea! Hopefully more to come.
You bet! 🤘
thanks to the players for taking "the challenge" and thank you chase putting this together. what a great concept. all the guitarists bring something to the party - some of whom i wasn't familiar with. this is an absolute treasure trove - almost encyclopedic. so much to digest here. will be coming back again and again.
My pleasure! That’s the idea! I wanted this to be super valuable and something people would want to come back to again and again.
All really good and very stimulating ideas from all Barry Green was my favourite great inspirational video thank ypu
Thanks David! 🤘
They all are mind blowing! Personal favorites are Stout because he swings so hard, and Stryker because he plays the tune and delivers it with a good feel, nice sound, and a thoughtful but appropriate arrangement. Again, everyone’s performance is fantastic making this video a treasure trove of guitar knowledge. Many thanks to everyone who made this!
Thanks for checking it out! 🤘
Wow, thanks!
Mind blowing… my thoughts, exactly.
awesome video. I am always searching for pros playing standards that I can learn from. these are all amazing and eclectic examples of virtuosic playing but with elements that any of us can use to approach these tunes with. amazing stuff! what a wonderful display of the diversity of jazz guitar!
Glad you like them! 🙌
Awesome video brother! Glad to see so many great musicians all play this tune 🙌
More to come! 🤘
Nice assist!
Absolutely incredible performances!!!!!
Really great video - every player gave a different but valid and beautiful interpretation on this classic standard. Going to have to listen through a few more times to each one.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🤘
Finally able to finish vid. Cecil's version blew my mind.
Amazing, all of them … I could appreciate all the different subtle variations. Very rich. Very inspiring. Thank you everyone.
Thanks for listening and appreciating! 🙏
I could listen to all these guys solo works forever. There is a certain genius in their play and approach to the music. It's always wonderful to hear and wonder how they do it. For me, Tim Lerch is one of my favs so I loved his approach- very Ted Green. Your list of players turned me on to some guys I was not familiar with. Can't wait to dig into their stuff. Thanks for that. Loved this!
This is a great idea. Thank you for doing this
Glad you liked it! 🤘
This is an incredible concept!! Would love more of this so much. Instead of then just saying what they did, it would be cool to interview them about it. Tim was great. He kept tempo well and wasn’t rushing or show-offy, just making great music.
Thanks for watching!
Tim had me swinging. The development of his ideas unfolded beautifully too. Terrific
Glad you enjoyed!
What a great video! They were all amazing, and you've introduced a bunch of fantastic new-to-me musicians. So much to learn from the depth and variety of approaches and concepts, but if i had to call out anything in particular, it would be the musicality of Cecil Alexander's phrasing - so tasty! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! 👌👌
Loved it all. Will have to listen again to pull out a fave!
Yes!
Great video. Wonderful to hear how different musicians approach the same tune. Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Incredible idea!!! Amazing collaboration, Love it ❤❤❤
Thank you! 🤘
Took me a couple sittings to absorb all this. All the renditions were great and the players were very generous to share their thoughts. From rubato versions to swing to hard rhythmic bopping. Excellent.
That was the goal! And all I asked them was to play the tune in their style. No requests for how to play it, what tempo, etc.
Great vid! Kudos all around!
Thanks for watching! 🤘
This was fantastic ! Thanks Chase
Thanks Lou! I have another coming soon! 🤘
Great video Chace. I think what this video reveals is the essential appeal of (jazz) music; it’s the unique voice of each musician. Music isn’t a competition, each performance is fascinating and beautiful.
Chase, not “Chace”. Sorry.
Well said! 😎
Thanks for making this incredible lesson/performance - one of the best things ever for jazz guitar!!
Super cool!. Many many revelations , each player brought something compelling to the the table - Max light was wild, loved Cecil’s simple tasteful melody statement , could go on and on
Lots of material here to keep listening to and learn from
Thanks !!!!!
Thanks for checking it out, and feel free to keep coming back! 🤘
I can't even imagine how effort you put it. I really enjoyed entire video. My pick is Tim Lerch :)
Thank you! 🙏🙏
Love that tele & the tones it produces. Great player pulling the trigger on it.
Thanks for watching! 🤘
That much talent and hard work.. Beautiful compilation!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Great performances! My favorite is Cecils solo, it's so melodic. I would love to see another one of these videos
Glad you dug them! 🤘
Dan Wilson plays so beautifully, such a class act, using Monk basslines, that's original and Dan is a true original, ca.t imagine that being bested.
Appreciate your thoughts! 🙏
This is a fantastic video. Thanks for organising this. The song is so melodic. Wonderful sounding guitars. Finger style is the best.
Thanks Colton! 🤘
Amazing content! Very inspiring 🤘
Appreciate it! 🤘
All were awesome performances - everyone owned it big time. Loved the old time from J Stout - that was a treat.
Glad you thought so!
Cheers and thanks!
Tim Lerch, man…every single time 🔥
Max Light. So beautiful and original. And Graham Dechter - amazing.
Those split second decisions I see Barry do, amazing. I'll quickly go see the rest. Thanks Maddox
Thanks for watching!
I usually wouldn’t watch such a long RUclips video, but this was an awesome idea. Enjoyed it immensely. Thank you.
Glad you gave it a chance! 🤘
great playing from all of the guitarists. thanks
Thanks for listening! 🙏
Tim Lerch´s playing is on another level. All of these ara amazing guitar players. Excelent video man!!
Yes they are!
This is so awesome. Always see it with rock and such but never like this. And with tons of my youtube favorites. Gracias Chase.
Exactly! Once I realized I couldn’t think of a jazz version, I knew I had to solve that 🤘
Loved this intimate glimpse into all these brilliant musicians. At the end it was a prayer saying there is room for us all.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🤘
Need more of thisss❤❤
This is so cool! well done all!
Thanks for checking it out!
Excellent video. I really enjoyed this, not only was the playing and improvising great, the philosophies that all these players have about music, was valuable, and insightful for me, and the differences in sound, approach, etc, gave me a well rounded listen. I'm gonna look for more of these on your channel, so thx again. All of these were great, I watched ALL twice, Graham Decthers version blows me away.
Thank you! I’ve got 3 more of these videos types on my channel. One with a group of guitarists playing a blues and my most recent with guitarists playing over a ballad 🤘
Great concept and I can only say that the originality of all performers was very inspiring indeed for a " classical " player.Great job thanks so much.
Thanks for listening!
Coolest jazz video of 2023 so far!!
Thanks Tiago! That’s high praise! 🙌
WOW!!
Some awesome playing!!
Fantastic performances!!
👍🎩👌
Many thanks!!
Great video. Everyone sounded great !
Thanks for checking it out! 👌
This vid is a phenomenal teaching tool. Listening is the only activity in music and in life, more important than playing. Thank you for the contribution.
Glad you enjoyed it, Dudley! More on the way!
Very cool idea - thanx!
Glad you liked it! 🤘
Really cool concept, Chase! Didn't see any mention of Graham Dechter's playing. His time feel and groove can provide a treasure trove of study alone--and his sound REALLY fills the room, in person or on video. Check out his playing on The Lineage Trio--classic, bright, and swinging. Great teacher as well--helped me develop my sound!
It'd be awesome to do this again. What about Peter Bernstein, Andy Brown, Bobby Broom, Bruce Foreman, Ed Cherry, Julian Lage, Mark Whitfield, Russell Malone...? The list goes on. Impressive work with getting all these great musicians to play on one tune. Please, please, please, keep the ball rolling!
I was also blown away by Graham’s playing as you might be able to tell from my reactions. All the guys killed it! Great suggestions 👌
Thanks Chase for posting this. All really great players (and at least one I know of is also a KILLER singer). Sincerely appreciated Mr. Stout bringing the old school playing as well as all of the other diverse of playing styles (and yea KILLER chops too ).
Thanks for watching, Kevin! 🙌
I never EVER supposed at this time of my life I'd learn SO MUCH using one of the most underrated tunes on the American-Jazz Songbook (well, at least here among Brazilian supposed-to-be jazz players). I'm still shocked with the first performance!! Thank you so much for sharing!
That was the goal! Glad you got so much out of it 🤘
Amazing guitar playing!
This was really cool, liked the wrap w Cecil up bluesy feel, just right w all
Thanks for digging! 🤘
This is one of the best formats on RUclips. Many RUclips channels do a horrible thing called pattern interrupts where they do annoying things throughout the video and make cheesy distracting jokes to increase viewer confusion and thus retention. Conversely this was a normal straightforward way to organize a video and I appreciate that.
I try to make videos that I want to watch. Glad you enjoyed 🤘
Such a great idea! Loved hearing them all. Now as a follow-up you should get them all to comment on what the others did. I'm sure it would be interesting to hear their reactions to the others' contributions. Keep up the good work (new subscriber). Max Light must have studied Holdsworth -- love those lines and chords.
Thanks for watching! 🤘
Also, very cool for you to ask your old professor. Well played 👏
Haha I would’ve asked Barry even if he wasn’t my professor. Thanks for watching 🙏
Great video Chase! I enjoyed the different approaches to this classic. My favorites are Cecil Alexander and Dave Stryker. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, Jerry! 🤘
I watched Paul's video and thought wouldn't it be great to see Jazz guitarist do something similar. Well, prayers have been answered. Thank you so much for this. So many guitarists could have been chosen for this. Couple of new findings for me here so really greatful for this. It was outstanding 👏🏾
I be watching this a few times for sure! 🇬🇧
Thank you! Glad you gave it a shot 🙏
This is excellent - thank you. 🤯
You're very welcome! 🙏
This was really sick! Would love to see more challenges like this
Thank you! 🙏
Cool video, great idea. All were terrific. I liked the Tele-jazzers, just goes to show, it's a versatile instrument. I've always loved Jonathan Stout's swinging groove, he gets that acoustic to really project! (And of course, the Charlie Christian vibe!) Tim Lerch's tones and harmonic ear are wonderful. And Dave Stryker really had that groove going as well - I want to learn some of those bits! Makes me want to play!
Appreciate you checking it out!
Been playing over 60 years.
This is great to use this approach as it gives us new ideas on great old standards and others. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed the video! 🤘
I love Jon Stouts playing!!
Cheers and thanks!
He’s great!
More videos like this please!!
Working on it!
Amazing video! So much to transcribe…! 😮💨😌🎸✌️
Many thanks!! If you get any solos done, please send them my way!
@@ChaseMaddox Sure! My favourite is Master Green’s, some wicked substitutions there…!😌👌🎸
Great video, thanks.
Thank you! 🙏
Thank you. This was an education on jazz guitar. So many times you play a standard and get bored with it, but hear these artists play all different ways with different approaches makes you rethink the meaning of standards and the ways to approach them. Even at first viewing, I got a little something from each to try to combine some new approaches, with new ideas. It would be great for you to do this again with a different standard, and may a couple different players too.. to expand out ideas and approaches. Thank you.
That’s the idea! Thanks for watching 🙌
I can read the notes and rhythm in your eyes Glad you were Barry's student! Otherwise genius instant response,Thank you and God Bless❤
Thanks for listening! 🤘
Lots of cool ideas from everyone here. My man Jonathan Stout brings in the swing though, making it the most listenable to me and the one I would keep going back to.
Good point!
Awesome idea!
Glad you think so!
Tim all the way.
My fav was Graham Dechter hands down loved where he took this piece.
love this, thank you so much!!!! not important which performance is best - its like a candy store of jazz candy - really cool idea, thank you
Thanks for watching!
Man, I thought this would be boring, but I couldn't stop listening...wow, awesome! 🙂
Lol how could it be boring with these great musicians?! Glad you stuck around! 🤘
Stout is such a cool guy and wonderful play
..hey Chase!..i’ve been watching your videos from the background for awhile now man, did a few years at Berklee many moons ago, a lot of rock and blues playing since and doing a lot of self learning for the last five years or so using all the resources that were not available to folks in the 1970s and 80s..
This idea of a bunch of super players doing their thing on a given song is one of the best I’ve seen on YT yet and I’m fairly familiar with all the other people sharing strong content like Jens, Nathan Borton, guys teaching Barry Harris concepts etc..
..last thought..the sound of Tim Lerch is incredible with those Charlie Christian pickups..Fender!
Thanks for doing this..i hope you continue this type of viewpoint in the future..Victor in NY
Hey thanks for your comment! I’m glad you dig it and thought it was presented well 👌
Graham Dechter, Barry Greene and Max Light were particularly inspiring for me here. However, these are all amazing guitarists and each take is special.
Well said! 🤘
