@Trena~ I really love the color the customer chose for the new finish. Elm has such a beautiful grain pattern! Dutch Elm Disease took a huge toll on the Elm tree population in the midwest, so unfortunately it's very rare to find it in furniture here. It was a delight to watch you refinish this lovely rocker! CHEERS TO YOU my friend! ~~Christy~~
I have a general dislike of gray furniture, buildings, and cars, but you did a wonderful job on that chair. I’f I was the customer I’d have gone for a natural elm finish. 😉
I disagree with you, but how boring would the world be if everyone agreed with everyone else? The color I really didn't (and still don't) is that odd color of green that was popular in the late '60s and into the '70s. My stepmother used to "antique" furniture, and that green was part of it. Of course older people liked shag carpet and fake paneled walls, too, so there you have it.
I agree. But it is a matter of personal preference. I understand the driftwood look is popular but this chair isn’t remotely driftwood looking. I guess I’ve seen far too many on front porches of country homes and have a certain idea of what they should look like 😂 As a matter of fact, I just remembered I have one very much like it out in a barn that I should probably bring in and refinish.😂
And I thought I was one of only a handful of people on the planet that didn’t care for grays..given how crazy popular it is recently. However I really appreciate the workmanship!!! Excellent job as always!!
About 45 years ago my grandmother had a very elderly lady living next door who had a rocker a lot like this one and a leg was broken. She asked if I could repair it for her and I did. When she passed I tried to buy it from her daughter but could not. It unfortunately was lost in a house fire. My first project that became my hobby for life. If I was only as good as you are. Thank you for bringing back that great memory and thank you for sharing.👍
I would imagine this rocker looks better now than when it was new. Your work is amazing. Glad you are back working with your dad. You look very happy and it shows in the finished project. Thank you for making these videos…I have learned a lot just watching you.
Excellent choice on the grey stain. Reminiscent of the grey cedar shake siding found on Oregon coast homes. It has a nice 'weathered' feel. Superb attention to detail.

Thanks for the very informative video! I appreciate seeing the tools and how they are used, as well as your comments on your assement, approach and process. And thanks for showing the chemicals you use to achieve the final outcome. 😎👍
Wow, lots of pigment in that grey stain. I love how shops like yours seem to not waste much. Seeing how fast that stripper desolves paint,Im glad it's only available to professionals (from what I heard from previous videos). I really appreciate your time and care you take producing these hypnotizing videos.
Thank you, Trena. A beautiful piece after you finished it. I really like your mother's cushions on it, too. The way you present the chair, I can almost feel the comfort of slowly rocking in it.
I like the color, turned out better than I would’ve expected. Very nicely finished out, I would expect the customer to be very happy with the end result. Thanks for the video, appreciate your time and effort to produce these videos.
Beautiful work, as always. Customers taste has to be taken into account as they pay the bills! Thanks for sharing the journey of being a professional woodworker!❤
Along with this wonderful make over, l enjoyed your musical additions to the video. I always love seeing paint taken off a beautiful wooden piece of furniture.
it's a beauty, Canadian Classic ! The tones match so much of what is popular here on the west coast. Reminds me of ash, a wood we worked with to make English long bows for one of my sons classes when he was about 11 or so. All the boys loved laminating ash and walnut, then analine dye to make each one unique. The grain in the ash is simliar, warm and wonderful tones as well. Thanks for all the wonderful tips and tricks. Prefloating the stain with varsol ,,
Really lovely stain. The rocker is so solid looking too! Great Job! I'm not a woodworker but truly enjoy the process and it's calming to watch your work. Thanks Trena!!
Trena, Thanks to you and Thomas Johnson I was able to save a precious keepsake that had broken, a glass paperweight with a picture on my daughter when she was 4. I had puzzled for a couple years about how to fix it without destroying the photo. Finally I thought about you and Tom using heat guns to loosen glue. It worked perfectly! Slowly removing the photo, I was then able to move it to a replacement paper weight. Thank you so much! ❤️
Trena, It's great to see how you strip, sand and color match over mends and buttons. I love to see you working alongside your dad, not to mention your mother's upholstery! You are not only teaching us about furniture restoration, but also how to live productively and cooperatively inter-generationally. Not to mention laying down some solid memories of working with your dad! These Vlogs are going to something that you and your daughter look back on with the very fondest of memories in the future!
i am glad to see i am not the only one still using lacquer as a finish. i tend to use lacquer or shellac on 90% of what i make. i just love the look of it and the way it wears. i found that the oil finishes tend to look dull and dirty very quickly and poly just looks to plastic. again, marvelous work.
Being a lover of warmth in wood, I would have never chosen grey, but have to admit the results are quite pleasing. Even on the simplist projects, I enjoy watching your work process. Thank you again for sharing with us.
That is a great color! And your mom made wonderful chair cushions! Looks fantastic so much better than when it arrived at the shop for sure…beautiful wood.
Absolutely stunning! Your work is magical. The cushions your mother made are an excellent addition to this piece. Fabulous result. You customer should be very happy with the chair.
Very interesting piece, the wood and the color. Not my most favorite color, but then again this is the customers piece. Excellent job Trena. Thanks again for showing us your craft !!😀
Wood grain always beats Paint. Nice job. A couple of years ago I had a couple of oak chairs to repair/ restore. I cleaned up the spindles on my lathe. It made the job much easer. If you hadn't done it on this chair I was going to suggest it for the future. But here's me preaching to the master. 🤪. Thanks Trena.
What a beautiful transformation! I am shocked that someone would have painted that beautiful rocker, but back in the day you did what you had to do to help it survive. I was unsure about the grays, yet when done under your expert tutelage it turned out fabulous!!! It almost reminds me of pickling finish. Congratulations on a job more than well done. 😊
It's not possible but on my bucket list is coming up there and working with you and your Dad much respect to you and your family . Your skills still amaze me thanks for sharing God bless you and stay safe
Hi Trena, the rocker is gorgeous. You had me a little on edge when you revealed the color, but as the project moved forward it worked out marvelously. Thanks for the video. Best to you and your family , Ed
I am totally on board with your methods. As a turner I love the grain of the wood. It's what keeps me coming back again and again. The fact that you were able to preserve the grain while dealing with an older piece of furniture is heartening. Excellent work, not easy to execute with old furniture. I am a subscriber now.
Trena: the rocker turned out really nice. A great update. I personally own 4 Dutch Elm antique side chairs. One of my first purchases when I began as a young designer. They are from England. They still have their original stain. I’ve loved them to this very day. Dutch Elm is a wood I particularly like. Glad to hear you feel the same. Again, I bet your client was thrilled with the results. Carol from California
Your work is Perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Trena, I love that you mention what kind of wood you are working on. That elm has a beautiful grain and colour! Fantastic job as per usual! 🤗🇦🇺
Love the colour Trena and the work top notch as always!....your mom did a great job with the cushions
Thanks so much!!
Amazing job!! I just don’t care for the grey. Just a clear coat on the natural wood would have been pretty too. Amazing job, as always!!!
Agreed.
Each to their own. I really like it.
Lots of work just to place an almost opaque paint on it. A nice light stain to show the wood after all that work would have been preferred.
You’re always willing to do whatever it takes to do best job that you can! You rock more than the chair!
Awesome job, Trena!
Thank you so much!lol

Very interesting to see the elm and it turned out beautifully! Your mom is a very talented upholsterer.....the three of you make a great team.
Thank you very much!
Yeah, those cushions really made the chair.
I agree the cousins are lovely.
What stripper was used?
watching the process of paint being stripped is so immensely satisfying to watch!!!

I'm just curious, do you like gray anything? Is it the color or the object or..? 😊
What an interesting project. I like how calm the grey stain is while showing the beautiful grain. Thanks for bringing us along.
Yes I think it actually works very well to calm that crazy elm. Lol
You look at peace again and your soft joy is evidenced in your work. Way to go!
Thankyou🥰

Another beautiful job. I don't think I've ever seen Elm before - I was expecting it to be oak. That Elm was very nice.
Glad you enjoyed it
