I think a survivalist technology series would be wonderful. For example: building a radio from found items, building a relay from scratch to create logic gates, or obtaining raw materials for electronics from nature.
u been playin too much mine craft
Awesome idea. A mcguiver channel lol
Brilliant 💡
This would be really cool content
I was thinking the same thing. I thought of electroBOOM’s channel and thought this could be less focused on explaining how electricity works and do things that are a little bit more.. complex, perhaps?
First of all: Don’t stress out about content, we‘ll still be here even if you take a break! Regarding ideas: I always enjoy these vlogs, so if you have interesting stories to share (about China, about travel,...) I‘d watch them in a heartbeat! Greetings from Germany, stay safe
greetings also from germany, here is really not a bad idea to explore the factories as the have let me into 3 so far and im just working for a local glass factory.
Absolutely agree.
Ukraine is with you.
Well said, Poland is with You also :)
Totally agree. I think that we, the vast majority of your audience, are here because of the quality of the videos even if you take a year for making and releasing them. Greetings from Mexico Scotty!
Like illuminatustm said, NO STRESS! We'll wait for you! Stay safe. This is the most important thing right now. Canada is with you too! :-)

I am a Chinese, a Hongkonger, I had been living in Canada and HKShanghai for my life. Personally, I feel the same as how "greedy to be living in both countries" "separated if I have to choose to live in one country" "sometimes exhausted to be living in Asia when compared to living in Canada.
if you are seeking an idea to make a video, I think you can talk more about comparing from work vs life between Asia and America. Also,
I personally looking forward to seeing you set up your workshop in your new home and do more of your strange parts video in the State.
Anyway, good luck with your health and new life in Phoenix.
Looking forward to more of your excellent video.
Explore U.S. manufacturing operations. One thing I really enjoy is seeing the people. I like how you combine interviews with explanations of the factories. Doesn't seem like anyone else is doing that in the U.S.
Yes, I’d love to! Just as soon as it’s safe to do so...
Along this line, visit makerspaces, small manufactures and garage startups around the U.S. Solicit ideas from members and owners for how we can improve innovation, incentivize all the good parts of the international manufacturing that you have brought to the forefront in your videos. What kinds of IP reforms would help the U.S. improve its local supply chains? What can we do to help the people of china and elsewhere, to have a more free and open society?
I'm not pushing for the U.S. to stop trading with China or anyone else. More what can we do here to allow people with ideas gain access to all the incredible manufacturing knowledge that you have highlighted and seems to be lacking here. Is a "manufactures mall" something that could work in the U.S.?
Andrew Bunnie Huang's book Hardware Hackers brings up a lot of the societal differences in how the US and Chinese treat IP, copyrights and patents. I think you would be a good person to explore these topics.
The people coming up with these ideas you know it is great and all but there was a reason why people started watching his videos. On this side of the world we can see American factories and stuff any day. Just look it up on youtube. But with the information embargo around here you'd be hard pressed to find this stuff about China and that made this channel very special. Just like how other vloggers have shown us about the "ghost cities" and how that's just nonsense and also even showed us how our media got the footage of their "ghost city" news. (I loved it. One guys literally just pointed his camera at the closed shops and stuff still under construction and then just moved his camera a few feet to the right and boom people and active businesses.)
Second it is horrible in the US right now. This series could be nice but like he said only when it's safe. Not only are most factories closes right now anyway but it's scary just to leave the house nevermind to a bustling industrial workplace. Honestly what is their government thinking reopening at this stage? They're just asking for the problem to get worse than it's already been. They have about 4x as many cases and deaths as the next country and well over 10x as many as the "China virus" country they keep talking poorly about.
Good luck to every family out there dealing with this.

Honestly, I enjoyed watching you light a fire and make tea. Hacking or repurposing electronics, building from scrap parts, etc (if you can get the source material), with basic tools would be nice
I think we're all going to have a rough year adapting to this new world we live in. You have to do what makes you happy personally. We'll support whatever direction you decide to go next.
I would love to see you reverse engineer some American tech that you find interesting. Maybe also some US factory tours and discuss how production is different here vs China.
Thank you. That really means a lot!
Maybe factory tours by video chat with people still working in them? (Assuming that it wouldn't put their health or anyone else's health at risk, of course.)
System76 is starting to make laptops and desktops in the United States this year. I've heard that they are very open to talking with people about manufacturing in the US.
That sounds like a great idea.
I just love your videos. I have often viewed you as an ambassador between our two countries. In time, we really will need that again. In the meantime, a lot of manufacturing is going to return to the US. It would be interesting to know the ups and downs of that process. Another aspect of your work that I admire is how delicately and honestly you managed the tuff topics.
*Suggestion since you asked*:
You could definitely interview some of the greatest personalities in tech, and go into their work in detail. And their roles in getting the great products into our hands. Not talking about the big guys but the relatively unknown ones.
Yes! Suggestions on who to interview first?
how about techie friends from your vicinity? Makers from China and some of the places you visited that struck you as personalities worth sharing.

I moved back to the us from china in the end of december as well. The whole "I own furniture" thing is totally relatable haha.
My condolences to you both. If you guys had stuck around a little longer you'd be through this mess already. Now you're in the thick of it. I even heard Trump reopened the country already with thousands of people still getting sick every day. That's a recipe for disaster. I think the CDC's estimating there's going to be an even worse second wave of Covid thanks to his blundering.
I dont think everyone is here because of China, everyone is here for the tech, so no matter where you are, it's what you show everyone.
I'd like to see you start from the beginning. Maybe find an electronics book from the 20s/30s and build hand generators, making the windings and commutator etc, working through Crystal sets and up to valve sets and beyond.
It might give you some clarity. They say "to understand the future, you first must understand the past."
I rarely like anything but this comment got my like :)
DO THIS!!!
i don't think that's what made his youtube channel popular
Speak for yourself. I wouldn't have even discovered this channel had it not been for me wanting to know how the world's other superpower lives. I had no idea they have huge manufacturing cities filled with things like all the parts you'd need to construct your own smartphone. And all the other advanced tech they have that we don't get to see on this side of the world. I mean how often do we get to see that things like Amazon's Go stores were long drummed up by China and from what I've heard they're already over the fad while Amazon Go's still kinda floating around and still being hailed as some future tech ahead of its time.
But I agree with the people watching and commenting. It's so dangerous right now in America. They have the highest case rate and death toll and Arizona where he is even has thousands sick and hundreds dead. A few survival crafts and DIY videos might really do the trick. And I don't know how far he got with the shoes but he had so much fabric maybe he could do a cool miniseries on that. I'd be happy to watch those videos while we wait until he's able to get back out there and show us the wide open world out there that we just don't get to see.
I don't want him to live in china, too scary right now while xi the pooh is in power. Want him to stay out of china and continue to make interesting videos.
For now: Strange Parts - The Archives, and soon, Strange Parts - Made in the USA, and when this blows over or calms down, Strange Parts - A new world. ( And get smarter every day...network here in the mean time.)

I like e Made In The USA series the most. 👍
Scotty, you don't owe us anything. We are just greatful for what you have given us. Hope this makes you feel a little better!
Scotty I am honestly just so glad you're okay. I have watched every episode of Strange Parts and I feel like I partially owe you credit for helping me get my degree. Working full time while also taking a full course load in Comp Science, commuting to campus and trying to do research all at once, there were too many late nights to count. I certainly agree that things have dramatically changed in the last two months but that's kind of a fact of life that I feel we all have come to terms with. Things are constantly in flux and we have to be ready for whatever the world throws at us. I personally have been struggling with an identity crisis since earning my degree. I would love nothing more than to work freelance and do new, fun and exciting things every day, but the harsh reality is that is just not feasible with rent, loans and the cost of living. I can't speak for everyone but I am sure many would agree that we enjoy living vicariously through you and your experiences shared here. There is so much to learn and experience in the world, and you have a beautiful way of representing it as you've constantly shown through this channel. To reiterate what many others have said, you don't owe us anything! The videos I want to see are the videos you want to make. Just keep doing what makes you happy, if you find yourself embarking on a journey or working on a project that YOU find interesting, break out the camera and take us along for the ride. Believe me when I say that people came for the awesome projects (iPhone Headphone Jack was my first introduction) but they stay for YOU, Scotty. God speed, stay healthy and never lose faith. We only get to ride this roller coaster once, so long as you had fun then it's fair to say you got your money's worth man.
Just a vlog, let us know what you’re doing from day to day. We are all bored use this time to keep us all entertained even if it’s for 10 minutes. It would give us all a sense of positive excitement everyday.

If it were up to me, I'd be interested to see you Frankenstein together some smaller gadgets and things while you're stuck in quarantine. I know you've been doing factory tours, and I enjoy those, but I do miss watching you take a simple idea for a tech modification and trying to figure out how to make it happen. This might be an opportunity to do some more stuff like that! And it doesn't have to be a super big or expensive project for it to be interesting -- often the more accessible it feels, the more I want to watch it.
Thank you for this update! As long as I can watch your videos I‘m happy. It really isn‘t about what you do but rather about you doing it. I love your videos! Let‘s be strong together.

Okay, I can only speak for myself, but I hope you read this. The reason I love your videos is not because they're in China or weird foreign places. I love them because I love watching YOU talk about tech and watching YOU learn about tech. Watching you source parts to build stuff that people generally don't consider to be things you can make yourself is why I subscribed to this channel. You can do that from anywhere! You can do that in the US if you want. Don't forget that your subs are here to see you, not to see China. Just keep doing the kind of content you were doing in China, but in the US. Sure, things would have to be a bit different due to there not really being electronics markets like in Shenzhen, but you can still source parts.
Just be yourself and make videos about stuff that makes you happy and we'll be here to watch.
Seconded
I agree, your greatest asset is your love for manufacturing, how things tick... You are why I watch your videos... Your enthusiasm! You can do video's about butterflies, and I would watch them!!!

I'd enjoy seeing an explanation on how to source the parts and find suppliers for a project totally using online sources, with a list of suppliers in the description box. There are lots of things I'd like to try, but I can't find parts anywhere in my area, be they electronic, silicon tubing, PP pipe, or other things. How about a video of how you locate a wide range of online sources for projects. Or how you take a unicorn part or material and then reverse search and find a supplier that carries that material? I've googled for hours and still not been able to find sources for some things.

To expand on that, show us the insides of the journey of that product from its inception to today. For example, a television. B/W to the 8Ks we have today.
Scotty you do you. I’m here for your personality not just the content. Love ya bro and stay safe
Couldn’t agree more!
As someone that has worked in manufacturing maintenance for the past 20+ years and had planned on retiring in less than two years, this situation we all are in has really changed my plans. Storytime of your time in Asia would be interesting.
I've been an expat in asia twice. Very awesome experience that comes with the tons of good and some bad. Revolving doors of friends are part of it as most people only go for a year and come back home to "the real world." Being in asian countries long term is hard to do when you start thinking of settling down, saving for retirement, buying a house.

The podcast industry is currently struggling - people don't listen to podcasts as much when they won't commute, and sponsors don't want to put money in it. Not a good thing to get into at the moment
Reflecting on this video, what comes to mind for me when I think about your channel is not so much the factory tour content (though they are fun), but the overall arching theme of "I have this idea, how can I make it work?". As a viewer, it's been fun watching you learning how to navigate new spaces - and it could be anything trying rent a flat in Shenzhen as an outsider, to exploring new tech ideas and learning the process of how something is built or made, to baking bread with a new group of people in Arizona. That's always been my takeaway - "I'm feeling a bit out of my element here, but I'm determined to make this work!". Just some thoughts from a random stranger online. I'm glad you're safe. Thank you for sharing!
I watch/enjoy your videos because primarily I like *you* as a person/personality, and secondarily the subject matter of the video. I’d love to see videos just about the cool things you get up to, projects you’re up to while making your house your home etc

you nailed every youtuber and streamer. 'what happens when i'm off camera' and a long sigh after it. don't be alone bud.
Let me tell you that so far all that you have done - in China AND in USA - brought me a lot of joy, inspiration, knowledge and fascination. You are one of those people that are as nerdy/inquisitive about the world and Craft in general as I am and that fills me with hope for people that want to experience the world and test what they can do with it. If you are not bored of your work, please continue in one way or another.
So since you actively encouraged Ideas for content I took a while to look over your videos and thought about what I personally think makes me enjoy your channel and content. I'll sprinkle in some youtuber names etc. for inspiration here and there.
Obviously a part of it is your insight into chinese hacker culture and travel in general, and that part is not viable, for now at least. But if I am honest, that's not the only reason I enjoy your content.
I found the channel 2 years ago when the iPhone video went viral and I still consider this a major part of your content, which I'd summarize as "hardware hacking". Personally I feel like the crown jewel of this aspect of the content was the Headphone jack, because I found the pcbs that could be folded so interesting. Obviously hardware hacking can't go on in the same capacity due to a lack of tools, access to the ecosystem in Shenzen etc., but for some hardware hacking all you really need is an oscilloscope and a soldering Iron. The RUclips Channel "Marco Reps" comes to mind. Similarly circuit design like Great Scott could be considered. The issue with both of these is that they are very technical and I'm not sure how well that would fit your current audience, since you often mention electronic concepts for those interested but stay rather high to medium level in your explanations. I am not sure if more in depth "teaching" content would make people leave which I obviously don't want. This might be hard to balance.
Another big part of your content are interesting things, which is also what gives the channel its name. Stuff that left a big impression on me where the iphone usb stick circuits and the RFID tags. Getting your hands on these is obviously hard right now, but you could consider showcasing interesting ICs, especially those that one may not typically find in the west. A deep dive into lcsc or chinese electronics distributers comes to mind. Again, issue is that it'd be different from older content and may be too technical for viewers.
Last big part of your content in my opinion is something that I find hard to put into words, it's like a call to action, a way that makes me want to do stuff myself all the time. It's part of all the videos of yours that I liked the most and it's very motivational. The one that comes to mind the most is my second favorite video of yours, the one about the San Francisco Hackerspace. We wrote during a channel premiere once about it and you agreed with me that sadly it didn't do so well, but I loved it. Maybe try translating the feeling of it (Strongly willed people can do anything if they put their mind to it, hackerculture) into other formats, as visiting in person is obviously not an option.
The last option that comes to mind is purely educational content. Again problematic because it's very technical, but also very interesting. That can still be made entertaining (Electroboom comes to mind).
Overall I get that I am not the average viewer and that following these ideas may not be the best strategic option for the channel, but with how the algorithm is working not making content may be even worse from a strategic point of view, so I thought I'd write them down regardless. Also I thought I'd take the opportunity to be a bit selfish and state what it is that I love about this channel.
And on a more human basis, don't hit yourself too hard about making content or not. In these current times any entertainment is welcome, but personally I think taking care of our family and loved ones is much more important right now. Take your time, get your bearings. When you got back into a workflow we'll still be here. And even if you feel like you can't really make any "good" videos right now, you can prepare projects and plan stuff ahead of time for when things are different.
Sorry if my english wasn't that great, but it was a lot to write.
"Sorry if my english wasn't that great" It wouldn't have occurred to me that English wasn't your native tongue.
I think that keeping busy and making _something_ is probably good strategic advice on both ends, keeping the algorithm happy and keeping a sense of normality within.

Damn man, as long as we have something to keep us business owners going, we will get through this. I recently have bought a bunch of broken phones, various electronics and parts before our lockdown so I have money coming in to keep me going. Anywho best of luck and stay safe!
Hey Scotty, pleased to see you safe and well. For me, it’s “Scotty from Strange Parts”, not “Strange Parts with Scotty”. YOU’re the reason most love the channel and when you find your next content-catalyst we’ll all be here to enjoy, share and support your journey. All the best.
I watch you. Whatever content you decide upon ill be here supporting you and your channel. Thankyou stay safe
I would watch soldering tutorials
I've had to stop watching a major channel that I used to go to for that because the star engages in COVID-19 denialism. I'd watch some basic electronics tutorials, for sure.
Daniel Kuehling which channel are you talking about?
@@RolfvanOort Big Clive.
Daniel Kuehling thanks buddy
Digital Code Parts, Strange Code Snippets
Java or python would be cool to make some kinda digital "Part"
I think whatever videos you do in this tech field will be loved by us due to the fact that you're awesome as a person :)
Scotty, you are the show. Your excitement, enthusiasm, and sincerity are contagious! I could watch you tell me about your breakfast.... or make tea.
Lol this is the end of season 2 and start of season 3. I laughed out loud at that. Just keep posting stuff, we are still all subscribed.
It feels like a long time since your last upload
yeah, hard to believe its been like only a month
Well because it has been almost 2 months now.
Whatever direction you choose to take the channel, it is appreciated. Interestingly, even the creators of major shows (Colbert, Fallon, etc.) are continuing to make content in a way that involves scaling back their operations, changing their format, and getting.. a lot more real. They're personal, intimate experiences now.
Maybe that's kind of what we need now? To put aside the divide between content provider and consumer, to make personal appeals, and to encourage everyone to look out for their fellow person.
Regardless of whether you work on electronics projects, work on improving the space that you share with folks there, do response/reviews of other videos that interest you, or just.. look at the camera and tell us what's on your mind, I know I'm in for it. I'll watch.
Best wishes from Oklahoma City.
Stay Safe Scott! Had lots of laughs re Strange Parts and your travels etc. Good to move forward and evolve into maybe a new direction. I think your skills in adapting to new challenges is your biggest achievement to date. All the best from Koln, Germany. Give me a shout if in the area!
Season 3 : *Strange Quarantine*
We missed you man. Through thick and thin, any decision you make we’ll be there. Much love ❤️
I don't know you, but I do know that you are a wonderful, smart person. When you get excited about things, you are exceptional to listen to, and learn from.
Whatever your next posts, I'm looking forward to it.
That was heartfelt and super-honest. It must be tough to be at such a juncture and I wish you luck with whatever choices you make.
Next time on Strange Parts:
"How I made my own IKEA couch - in the middle of nowhere"
... from matchsticks ;)
I'd watch
This seems like a great time to focus on software solutions, combos of said solutions, make some custom code to do certain things. Anytime you are being put into a box and asked to perform, you may find yourself with some unique things because of the constraints. I'll be looking forward to seeing how you pivot.
You have a unique advantage from your international travels -- the connections you've made along the way. At times like this many of us are completely blind to what's going on in the rest of the world on an individual level, we see the headlines about countries and statistics but we don't know what it's like as a regular person on the ground in different parts of the world. A video series interviewing your colleagues and friends around the globe about their experiences and current situation would not only keep your channel going, but I think it would be extremely valuable content that deserves to be made.
Dude take your time and stay safe what ever happens we the fans will still be here god bless
I've been awaiting this update from you, when I hear the rumors in late December coming from and around Wuhan you were the first thought on my mind. We miss you brother, and no matter what the future content holds, we are here you you first, content second. Stay safe my friend.
In the woods with limited tools.. that sounds like you're gonna build a log cabin 🤣
Stay sane and save Scotty, we're in it all together and it's very normal to get fed up with this situation and freak out.
Dude. I’m going to make a playlist with all your vids and just let it run while I work. That way you earn money from RUclips while you figure out next steps. You rock bro.
Well I just found your channel and corona has stopped it for a while. Stay safe mate and hope you can get back to the fun soon
The idea of a vlog / update just rambling like this doesn't seem bad to me. I'm here much more for the personality.
Would love to see how you made bread.
thrilled to see you're alive and well and still making videos!
Thanks for the update Scotty, it's nice to hear from you.
Nice fireplace and kettle! :D
