DCS World VR Performance Test - GTX 1080 vs RTX 3090

  • So I upgraded my GPU, and was very curious on the performance impact this would have on DCS World. Went from a 1080 to a 3090, which in many ways, it is a pretty decent upgrade. I have currently own 2 headsets, so I decided to test them both with a before and after. Sadly, my low expectations should have been even lower. Hope you find the results entertaining!
    I also made a comparison between the headsets for DCS, if you want more information about these, be sure to check out • DCS VR - RIFT S vs QUE...

    I have to be a dissenting voice here. I upgraded from a 1070 to a 3080 and from a rift s to a reverb g2.... granted...had to mortgage the house, but I got a substantial improvement in DCS. Frame rates are not the only measure. What astounded me most is that I can play multiplayer with the frames locked at 45 fps...and that's with pretty high settings, and in multiplayer. We did a mission with my squadron on saturday night with 16 people online and I was still getting a consistent 42-45 fps in the caucuses map. We had 16's, 18',s 14's and a10's. The only map where I get really crappy framerates...down to 20-25 fps is sitting on the ground at Incirlek on the syria map. My computer has 32g of corsair memory, i7-8700 and I've optimized the cpu usage and nvidia settings as per the advice on VR4DCS. The real issue though was visibility. Fly formation and being able to see clearly in dogfights was difficult. I was lucky to see anything further than a mile other than being lucky to see a speck. I have measured distances in tacview and I can easily spot aircraft at 3-5 miles and large aircraft like tankers at 10. The other night, I was flying at 20K and looked down to see a pair of 16's headed back to base, and they were at 5K yet i could see their planform over the water easily. So for me, it has really made a world of difference. Yes...DCS sucks when it comes to VR performance and like most of you, I hope they can fix that but I've lost my optimism for that. However, it's not terrible. The upgrade made playing the other VR games so much better. IL2 is superb, and things like halflife Alyx and lone echo are just fantastic. Anyway, my 2 cents worth.

    DCS really is a dumpster fire when it comes to multi-thread support and optimisation.....but gotta keep pumping out those new terrains and WWII asset packs to sell....sheesh. Every new 'product' for sale is just another middle finger to the customer base that have put up with such shitty optimisation/performance for so long because they have invested so much already, and are just waiting for ED to pull their finger out of their ass and give a crap.

      The GPU can only work when it's been provided work from the processor. Basically, the processor does all of the 'general' calculations regarding the physics and events that are happening on screen in the frame. Once all of that is finished, it hands off this information to the GPU, which then adds polygons, shaders, and whatnot to create the actual image. Basically, before the processor has handed off all information, the GPU has nothing to provide shaders, textures, and whatever to, in order to create the final image.
      Upgrading to a faster GPU basically means that the GPU can finalize the frame faster, but unless the CPU is ready to provide it with another frame, it will then idly wait. It cannot create more frames until the CPU is ready to hand the information the frame is supposed to be based on. Upgrading to a faster GPU, therefore, has little to no impact on the framerate, as you're waiting for the CPU to finish its task. The only time where it makes sense to upgrade the GPU therefore is when you're in an opposite scenario, where the CPU is able to provide frames faster than the GPU can draw them.
      So yes, if you're in a heavily CPU bound scenario, you can increase purely GPU bound settings, without any hit at all to the overall framerate. The GPU will take more time drawing out the images, but it won't matter, as long as it's still finished before the CPU is ready with the next frame. As long as the settings you're increasing in DCS do not also increase the load on the CPU. So for example, you might be able to increase anti-aliasing (SSAA) and Texture levels with no performance hit whatsoever, while you might suffer a performance hit from a higher view distance, as your CPU also has to calculate physics for more units.
      The same is true for upgrading to more or faster RAM, or an SSD over an HDD. With more/faster RAM or faster storage, the CPU then spends less time waiting to access the assets it needs in order to finish its job, which in turn allows it to hand of more frames per second to the GPU.

    Well, have you disable ASW ? because these fps capped to 45hz are pointless.
    With that 1080 you might get 45 and with the 3090 you're probably at least above the 60, but since ASW (and your headset configured to 90hz), it gets capped down to 45 fps.
    Try disabling it and bench again.

    DLSS would be a great improvement. As I understand it, DLSS can still be used even if there is no ray tracing. the developer just has to implement it. I use a Pi Artisan at 120Hz and it looks great. I can't complain about the performance with a 3700X/2080 Super but I would love to maintain 120fps. That would be SWEEEET

    • @motionbasti
      @motionbasti 3 года назад

      DLSS and Raytracing are completely different techniques that have nothing to do with each other. But yes, DLSS 2.0 could be great. However, you will never reach 120 fps even with that, because the big problem is much more the cpu bottle neck. Even if the performance was recently improved, it is still far away from your desired performance. Soon the vulcan api is supposed to come. That could be a leap forward again.

    Hi-res headsets and today's GPUs are all about compromise. The RTX 3090 is only a little more than 2x faster than the RTX 2060 Super. We'd probably need a card about 1.5-2x faster than the RTX 3090 to really get to a good place for hi-res VR headsets.

Granted I do turn things down/off for VR but, man, I'm seeing numbers closer to your 3090 than your 1080.

      More stable locked framerates, but really no real increase on framerates sadly. 3090 for DCS or MFS currently is a waste of money sadly, unless there is a unreal leap in single core performance in the next cpus, or they implement DX12 or vulcan flawlessly in the simulators, top tier gpus will not be fully utilized. That being said, with your cpu you should get better framerates, but I would be surprised if you fully utilize a 3070.

      Better GPU in DCS just means you can have better image quiality, not higher frames. So run a higher pixel density and subsequent sharper graphics in VR. You see when he bumps up to 1.5SS the GPU is used more, but FPS stays the same. Is just how DCS works, so yes the 3090 will give you the option to increase just image quality settings - not stuff like more trees or better view distance that uses more CPU.
