This game has some pretty strange performance situations. I have noticed that almost everyone with a 3090 experiences worst performance that those with lower end hardware. I expect this is a driver thing which will hopefully update.
other things that I have noticed is random windows settings make large differences in this game as well as occulus headsets not performing well with the wrong settings. This game is capable of performing at 60 fps on my vega 64 and ryzen 2600 with 16 gb of ram. A lot of people have managed to get the game running well, however this has been known to have been extremely finicky. I mean some people are having to go into registry files while others are able to do things as simple as disabling game mode in the windows settings. Not to mention the TXAA in this game i kid you not will drop you 15-20 fps from FXAA with a very small drop in quality.

My experience is pretty good. I do see room for improvement, obviously, but MSFS is what it is because it uses all sorts of cutting edge tech (despite being only DX11 for now). The thing about VR is that you more or less have to render everything twice, so you're always going to get an FPS hit. That said, Asobo will probably manage to optimize things a bit more, but I'm not expecting miracles. MSFS just really has a lot going on onscreen and offscreen as well, and apparently it wasn't really made for VR. So I'm kindof surprised that they managed to make it work at all, albeit in a sometimes kind of clunky way (I have to recenter my VR cockpit cam every time I go back to VR, for instance).
Compared to X-plane VR, I do get a slightly lower FPS, but with much more happening on screen. There are thousands of trees and buildings and grass and whatnot, and if something comparable would have to be rendered in X-plane, it would turn into a slideshow for sure!
Here are a few things you can do to improve performance:
1: latest drivers for everything (mainly GPU)
2: Have nothing else running in the background that has no reason to be there. The sys tray should be as empty as possible. Mine just has an audio diver and something for my RGB keyboard, and that's it! Check in your taskbar to see if there's anything else taking up too much memory or processor time, and if there is, get rid of it!
    3. Mess around with render scaling in the VR section of MSFS. Setting 80 should give a pretty smooth experience (on a Rift S at least) without compromising the visual quality too much.. 70 is almost acceptable as well.
    4. To prevent motion sickness, make a weather preset which has NO WIND of any kind, nor turbulence. All this wobbling around is what's going to make you sick like a dog!
    5. It helps to pick a relatively simple plane. The Piper Cub gave me excellent frame rates, as well as the Robin. Even the Carenado Mooney performs fine. Planes with more advanced systems and glass cockpits are going to be more demanding on your system and reduce FPS
    6. Tinker around with the VR Graphics settings in MSFS. Start with really low settings, and then reintroduce more stuff until you find a balance that works for you.
    7. Make sure that Gaming mode in Windows is OFF. Also make sure that hardware Accelerated Scheduling in Windows Graphics settings is OFF. These settings are known to potentially really compromise your performance.

You need to lower your resolution to get good fps. I have a 6700K and 1080gtx and get smooth fps on medium and high settings when using my original Oculus Rift. Why? Because my resolution is at 80%. Also, as long as you can turn your head without judder, you do not need to have 90fps, especially with ASW turned on. And anyway, VR is blurry by default. It's part and parcel of where today's tech level is. It is not the same as using a 4K screen. My first impression, especially given my lower specs (compared to new PCs), is that VR is amazing so long as your expectations are reasonable.

The keyword is "We are just not there yet". VR's optimum framerate is 90fps. The mainstream resolution of VR headsets is just "not sharp enough" - you can clearly see pixels when your eyes are mere inches from the 2x screens. Getting a 4K x 2 resolution VR Headset would not solve your problem because it would be impossible to run at 60fps (don't even talk about 90fps) even with a i9-10900K + RTX 3090. You can't even run MSFS 2020 consistently at 60fps at 4K with a i9-10900K + RTX 3090 on a flat screen, forget about being able to do so in VR with a 4K x 2 resolution VR Headset.

    • @Real28
      @Real28 3 года назад

There's a lot of misinformation in this post, as it assumes all headsets have a optimum fps of 90. Then assuming they aren't sharp enough, yet my G2 is sharper than my 1080p monitor and just behind my 1440p. I'd never consider 1440p "not sharp enough", in fact, I find it the absolute sweet spot as 4k doesn't get much sharper to the naked eye under 30" of screen.
Thing is, you don't need the graphics to be maxed out. I have an 8700k and a 3090 FE and I can hit 60 in majority of situations on 1440p. I don't hit that in VR but for the first implementation, it's alright.
Do you remember how bad VR was in DCS? It was atrocious for a long time. Good VR takes time. Some of the best implementations (iRacing for instance) took years and they were developing their VR when the first Oculus Rift dev kits weren't even for sale.

    • @SETHalpine
      @SETHalpine 3 года назад

The main problem is that you have some very pricey graphic card, which are unable to manage 4K resolution...It's not only an Asobo's problem. Graphic Card are too expensive, and too weak for the new needs !
Actually the better GC hardly manage 4K 8.3mp 60fps on a flat screen 60Hz, on this screen both of your two eyes, see 8,3mp.
A Quest 2 has less pixels 7.5mp, so it's almost easier to produce 60fps in this case in VR, at least 30/40fps at 72hz...
BUT VR divide theses 7.65 mp per 2 ! So you lose some visual clarity
We need pancake or meta-lens in VR device, and 15mp panel in order to have at least 7,5mp per eye!
And of course really better (and cheaper) graphic cards in order to display 4K X 2 resolution...

    • @artyboy1377
      @artyboy1377 3 года назад

@@SETHalpine You sum it up so well - High-end GPUs are too ex, VR requires driving 2x high resolution images & current hardware is unable to support 4K (x2). It's simply the laws of physics, if you put 2 small screens just mere inches from your eyes, those screens will need to be UltraHD resolution (unless you like staring at a low resolution CRT image upclose with pixels galore). And if the hardware is required to drive 2x 4K moving images, compromises have to be made somewhere. There is a reason why 90% of VR games uses low resolution/polygon count characters, objects and environments - to maintain high frame rates while the hardware works extra hard to generate 3D moving images across 2 screens. Introducing VR elements into a game which is already hard to drive in 2D mode is just pushing the limits of current hardware to where it's incapable of doing without making compromises elsewhere. We are just not there yet. Of course if the compromises of lower resolution/visual fidelity/framerate are acceptable to you in exchange for better immersion via depth perception, that's perfectly fine. Personally, I prefer to play MSFS 2020 (and DCS) at a pin sharp 3440x1440 34" UltraWide monitor at a mix of Very High/Ultra setting at an average of 45-65 FPS on my i9-9900K & RTX 2080Ti while awaiting the RTX 3080Ti. I've been playing VR games for the past 8 months, I know what is sharp enough or fast enough - for my eyes - after playing PC games for the past few decades.

@@Spiritwonder420The settings that are low are detailed grass and reflections, keeping in mind Flight sim 2020 fps depends on what aircraft you fly and what location you are at, I run locked at 30fps worse case scenario, say in a massive airport with photogrammetry buildings. In areas with less building or aircraft that have less graphics impact I can stay steady on 45fps.
Like I said I'm sure when the game is optimised better, we will get better performance flatscreen and VR.
I think next generation games\sims are not designed to run everything at max settings at 60fps or 90 fps for VR, even with next gen hardware, for what i have learnt is that its so the games stay compatible and a better experience even say 5 years time when the next generation of hardware is released.

@@Spiritwonder420I think Microsoft Flight sim, which has photogrammetry and the whole earth to explore with the best graphics I have seen, is very different to any other simulation or game out there today. You could put all setting to low and it still would blow any other flight simulator out of the water.
I agree with needing 90fps to eliminate motion sickness, but for simulations, 45 or 30fps would feel perfectly fine for many people, I think 90fps is a must if you are playing a game where your character is moving or for fast paced games. But simulations where you are just moving your head is fine to be running reprojection at to get 45 or 30fps.
I don't think we would get to a time where you can 90fps on microsoft flight in vr, especially not on high settings and on a reverb G2 at 100 percent render scale.

The ASW part is messy because its role IS to have smooth movement while at 40FPS, if your game runs at 70, ASW will force it to 40 and then drop 1/2 frames, which is normal. Alyx is a fully VR game optimized to run at 80 FPS, ASW has nothing to do here since the game runs at the expected 80FPS most of the time.
With your current graphical settings, it seems your game doesn't reach the 40 FPS required for ASW to work properly, it is at 35 FPS inside your cockpit, therefore ASW is lost and cannot reproject correctly, hence the multiple artefacts you got. Try to at least have your framerate at 40FPS, or you can may be try Oculus Tray Tool which allows you to force ASW to run at lower FPS than 40. (or 45 if your max is 90)

Performance for me hasn't really been an issue. My specs are a core core i5-9600k OC and watercooled, 16GB DRR4-3200MHz RAM, and an RTX 3070. My problems come with oculus link being SUPER buggy, which I experience pretty much everywhere. I am going to be switching to the Reverb G2, whenever that comes at least, and hopefully that'll be better. The warped frames seemed to be more of an oculus link problem than anything. Whenever I get those, I simply unplug my headset, disabling link, and plug it back it. This fixes the issue, so I'm skeptical that oculus link needs some work for games or sims like this...
UPDATE: I got my HP Reverb G2 in today and tested it in MSFS. It ran very smoothly, and I was even streaming it on discord, which will usually tank performance. Seems to me that the bad VR is just an Oculus problem...

DCS has had years as well the touch controllers support. So you can do same as VTOL VR does. The difference is that in DCS the 3D pilot model doesn't move or react to your body.
This is problem that needs fixing. As when you move your head to look mirror, your mirror vision is zoomed as your head doesn't move as body doesn't move. Your head will turn and nod, but that is it. ED needs to add dynamic hands from the shoulders and start making head/upper torso to move by the HMD.

I don't measure performance - I'm only interested in how it feels. On an Intel CPU it ran very well for me..... BUT.... The graphics in the mid and long distance were garbage, no auto-gen whatsoever. Surprisingly, the clouds looked kind of 2d (unlike X-Plane) and they had weird triangular artefacting around the edges. On my system, in VR, X-Plane 11 Vulcan runs much better and can be run on maximum graphical settings, so I get horizon to horizon autogen. When coupled to using the VR controllers, it really improves your spatial awareness of the aircraft - plus in X-Plane 11 you can walkaround - literally anywhere! I will see if I can do some more tweaking, but for me, at this time, X-Plane-11 is a much better experience in VR!

I played for about 3 hours last night, in all fairness about one and a half of those hours were spent tweaking the settings because I wanted to run the game on ultra settings and MSFS20 clearly had different ideas. However, once I cleared up the constant crashing and freezing apparently due to high settings, I spent the final hour and a half flying over the dreaded frame eater known as NYC at night. Again, not the smoothest experience I've had first time playing a game in VR but I didn't get sick or notice any major issues when I got it to actually stop crashing. While it was crashing though I did notice that it would stop for 1 to 3 seconds and the screen would turn black then return, not sure if they did that on purpose. I'm going to give it another go tonight and hope that no new issues occur. **I may not have the tool you are using via Oculus though. My specs are below in case anyone wondered.

Small planes & light aircraft work best since there isn't the CPU load from glass cockpits etc. I fly the A320 Flybywire most of the time - VR in this plane works fine but settings have to be lowered somewhat, the focus on the cockpit systems means you don't really feel the low settings but still experience the VR sensation.

In the other hand, FS looks amazing (the details of a cockpit are insane, and DCS..well..it looks for sure pretty -depends on the aircraft- but isnt handle quiet well. But the worst aspect i believe are the mountains, the landmarks in DCS are extremely well made until you find a triangular mountain, straight lines everywere. That little detail makes FS more pleasent to watch in some scenarios. Hope both games take notes of pros and cons of their product.

Hi X-CHECK trust what your system and MSFS can produce - VR performs great for me, have you given up?
I disabled motion projection from OpenXR it made me sick with it's artifacts and bad updating. I changed the OpenXR scaling down to 70%. I did the same thing in MSFS for render scaling 70%, graphical options around medium and I can tell you now it is smooth in non built up areas like New York but I can fly jets comformtably in Seattle and London also so that's ok too. Oh I have a G2 (the image is still very clear with the render scale changes) and a Intel 9900K @ 4.4Ghz and Asus 2080 Ti.
So as you can see you should be able to get great performance on your rig with a Quest 2 and the fact you can't just tells me you've not understood how to get the best out of a new sim. You can absolutely enjoy VR in this sim on a wider veriety of systems and this video tellls me that you don't think that's possible. I hope you find what's holding back YOUR VR experience in MSFS because as you stated it can be a truely wonderful experience.

    • @dtrjones
      @dtrjones 3 года назад

Maybe to put it in context, this is way more playable for me than when VR was released on X-Plane with the same rig. In X-Plane I couldn't fly around London with TrueEarth (there really wasn't any point using VR in X-Plane without TrueEarth tbh) but the Vulkan update really made VR possible in X-Plane and now I love it. I think many more improvements can come in software and of course with Xbox consoles getting an MSFS release with DirectX 12 Ultimate support in the summer - that surely will help on the PC side as well.

Hey David! How have you been? Merry Christmas!
So yeah, I still have messed with this a bit.
Definitely went on and disabled AWS on Oculus, and made sure Reprojection was disabled in OpenXR. That resulted in a experience that didn't make me sick, but the reprojection artifacts now changed tovertical or horizontal blurriness depending on the axis I turn my head. That ended up now giving me eye strain and a headache lol.
If I lower the settings enough, inside the cockpit the framerates can be reasonable as to not have so much blur when looking around, but when taking off and looking outside the window, all close objects are a tremendous blur.
And of course, everything looks well... crappy... And there are some weird artifacts that occur in the scenery through the propeller, and my cockpit now and then disappears for a single frame.
I want to enjoy this, but I just can't. I may be just too sensitive. Maybe the fact that I play VR almost everyday with other titles, and I am used to a certain level of experience is what really makes this unbearable to me.
I appreciate your comment, I really wish I was able to enjoy the sim as you currently do, but it seems I will have to wait for a bit more optimization. I will still mess with the setting now and then. I will also hope there comes an NVIDIA driver that helps with this situation. But things as they currently are... Nope...

My biggest issue is not performance, but the fact that cockpit scale is wrong. The cockpits appear up to 20% smaller in VR then they actually are in real life. I am a Cessna 172 pilot with hundreds of hours in the 172R and 172S. The VR scale of the cockpit is just plain wrong.

You can turn of ASW in the oculus config tool thingy (I forgot the name there is a dev tool -> looked it up.. Oculus Debug Tool) ... Don't know if that works for you... I was so disappointed with the current state of VR that I didn't even get to 10 minutes.. I was totally annoyed that it didn't center right. And I couldn't get it to center right (and if it's not right my inner ear thingy (your balance sensor so to speak) will start to object like it did with you).. k maybe it was a bit more then 10 min (just tinkering with settings) but I never actually got it to a point that I wanted to fly with it... But I just know you can turn off ASW. And I thought it might help... My guess is you just end up with a really choppy framerate...
I'm with you on the "I don't need the touch controllers".. I actually don't even want to use them in a flight sim... a lot of how I play is with a Hotas and the stupid things always get in the way drop off the desk when not using them... I love not having to use them... But Ima do what you did.. Just forget VR launched until it's better.

@Gulf Island Aviator I FIGURED IT OUT!!! My God! After so many hours I can finally say it's AMAZING! What I did was switching from OpenXR Dev tools to SteamVR environment (!!!) plus studying this post: forums.flightsimulator.com/t/my-2070-super-vr-settings-and-suggestions-valve-index/321913/148 . I did some changes to Nvidia CPL panel too. You have to launch MSFS first (!) with WMR window/SteamVR closed (!). After launching the sim, press CTR+TAB and go into VR mode. Guys I can run this now at FULL RES 2236x2192 with ultra clouds, medium settings at 35-40FPS fluid! I have no idea why it didn't worked with OpenXR dev.tools and motion reprojection! It's a night and day difference now!

After a bit of tweaking and disabling ASW I get good performance in most scenarios, no artifacts, and no nausea. R5 3600, RTX2070 Super, 16gb RAM. I think it's a good start and will only continue to improve, hopefully with the addition of motion controller support.

ASW issues to me are a symptom of the problem, not the cause of it. I have tried removing ASW, yup, the artifacts are gone, but in its place comes motion blur. Lots of it. Nausea indeed falls drastically, but eye strain and headaches sky rocket for me :/

This is all interesting and I am shocked to hear you are having issues on your Quest 2 with the hardware you have to drive Q2!!
I am running a Nvidia1660 super and of course it can not drive the Quest 2 beyond 1080p. Any settings beyond that creates a very unpleasant slide show. I was going to buy a 3080 to fix my Q2 performance issues but I think I will hold off until performance issues get resolve. In the mean time my 1660 super is driving my old Rift headset just fine with a lot of high and Ultra settings. Not the best resolution but very playable. I can snap my head around and the scene changes quickly and smoothly. I am loving the flight experience at 1080p. Looking forward to more resolution though..

IMO VR is very much a game changer in FS2020 as well. Doing the Yosemite bush trip in VR is absolutely amazing. The situational awareness is a whole other level. I have an older system with a GTX1080 (not TI) and a HP Reverb G1 (2x4k) and setting the render scale to 70-80 makes this quite smooth. No way I'm going back to 2d. I am a RL private pilot and without the ability to look around freely its nowhere near real.

19 years later, I put my butt back in a simulator ... What was my job for 11 years, would not appeal to me. I was waiting for the VR to be sufficiently mature to get back to it.
War Thunder, DCS, VTol VR ... and now, finally! FS2020!
With VR, the immersion is there ... The flaws too, I find myself wanting to select buttons ... not accessible ... Argh ... The confusion between the desire to touch the real buttons, and having to do with palliatives ...
graphically with 4k on a flat screen, we could be happy: 8.3mp seen by each of our eyes .... but in VR, visual acuity is reduced ... by two .., one eye has only 3.75mp on the Quest2, a little bit insufficient ...
20 years later, the technology is not yet there, to have its simulation close to reality at home (without the G)
I think the Hotas recipe is not suitable for this generation of aircraft and this imaging technique ... VR is good for warbirds, not on buttonhole planes ... The Hotas, it's good with a 4K screen ... but we know now, that the immersion level, it sucks.
In VR, those who have tried Vtol Vr have understood the fun of touching the buttons with the "fingers", but the virtual stick has its limits ... in my opinion, you need a real joystick in the right hand, and in the left hand a Oculus Touch controller magnetized on a linear guide rail.
The idea being to take a normal throttle, to free it from the handle and on the potentiometer to put a magnetic base there.
We therefore control the throttle with the Oculus Touch installed and when we need to operate a button, we do so by raising our hand (the controller).
Autonomously, the Quest2 allows the identification of hands and the pitch of the fingers, if this function existed with the link (connected to the PC), then it will be great! We could press the buttons with a full hotas, coupled with the "voice attack" program and its vocal commands, we would then have the panacea.

However, I get 40fps in oculus on vr mode and 40fps on Ultra settings on a 3080, even in new york. So if you running current gen hardware you should be fine running this game on ultra settings in vr.

If they reduce the graphics details, both the resolution and the frame rate can be improved. That's what they do for all the games written for Quest 2. Whether VR is there or not really depends on what resolution and what graphics details you want. You can have a very smooth experience for all VR games without any motion sickness even today. A resolution of 1080p was considered to be very good in the past, but now people want 4k, and then 8k, .. LOL BTW, our vision isn't really digital. So, if you want VR to be like reality, you need to simulate our real vision. There are still some differences people can notice when comparing DVD and plastic LP audio. :) Our perceptions and senses are kind of analog, not digital.

The problem you show at around 7 minute mark only happens to me when I have pressed space bar to recenter VR. Don’t do that and re center manually with the arrow keys and that won’t happen. At least for me. I get between 25-30 fps in VR with ultra settings. I have similar performance on my computer except for the GPU (using an RTX 2080ti), so you should be able to run the game better than that.
Edit: The issue for me gas been solved by using the beta version of the Oculus software

I don't know who tried this but once you are sit on your vr airplane on the cockpit try to leave the airplane like you do in real life, so stand up and moving on the left, you would be outside the airplane, you can walk standing on the airport looking your airplane from outside like in the real life, I found this mind blowing, like "I'm standing in front of a cessna!", you can check your airplane, wheels, fusolage, wings flaps, transparents, and most of important looking around the airport, and try this once you're flying, you put the sim in pause then you get up and you moving outside the aiplane. And you look down 😂 it's absolutely fantastic, I have done this flying over Venezia and wow!

I suppose they aren't doing that Nvidia VR thing that's supposed to only actually render what's displayed in the headset to save performance? Nvidia announced that, everyone was hyped, and then it disappeared.

For performance issues, I’ll be it’s your 3900X the issue. Zen 2 CPUs especially (Intel and Zen 3 have the same issue in some places but it’s better I think) are bottlenecking the 30 series GPUs for this sim (I have a 3700X + 3080), due to the single-threaded ness. Mine runs fine but yeah this sim is too single threaded dependent (regardless of CPU).
Don’t upgrade it tho, try turning up render scaling to push the load to the GPU
