Speaking as a theater person (playwright and artistic director of a teeny tiny theater), live shows have a certain advantage that a movie can never replicate: that live audience reaction, that feeds and grows energy from the audience to the people on stage. There's also a spark with actors who work well and long together to have new little moments within scenes, to grow the piece over time. A movie is a gem, set in stone, unchangeable from its final print (well, director's cuts, etc., but basically, the movie is the movie). There are human imperfections that enrich a live performance. This piece was written and conceived for the advantages of the stage, and for me, it didn't translate organically to movie form.

I must agree with the title. I saw the original Broadway musical on a try with my high school A.P. Drama class during my senior year in 1988. Yeah, I was one of those "theatre kids" ever since elementary school and had serious music conservatory, Broadway and voice acting goals and determination to live and work in Manhattan. I did accomplish one goal: I moved to NYC in my very early 20s and resided there for 15 years - but never became the actress/singer I studied & aspired to be. It's said that "there's a lightbulb, for every broken heart, on Broadway."
    I'm one of them.
Anyway, the show was stupendous and I purchased the soundtrack from COLONY RECORDS on W. 49th Street in the Theater district after the performance before all of us piled back into the charter bus returning us to our school in northeastern Maryland; still humming the now late, great Stephen Sondheim tunes in my head. Nothing compares to experiencing a LIVE Broadway performance with an actual pit orchestra. This wasn't the first B'way show I'd seen. It was my second, but remains memorable. And I treated myself to see it again with actress Phylicia Ayers-Allen in the role of the Witch that B'way legend Bernadette Peters originated. I must admit, Ms. Phylicia killed it! Fantastic job! My face character from that show was the actress whom played "the Baker's Wife". She was hilarious.😂
I was apprehensive about viewing the film INTO THE WOODS on cable, even if there were notable names in the cast. No disrespect to them, but I changed the channel almost halfway through. SMH. Too bad
Anyway, I'm looking forward to your reaction! Take care.
    🎭

When shit goes down, people will point fingers at each other, but it the end, it doesn't really matter. In fact, in the script for the show, the "it's your fault" song is actually titled "Our Fault".

My college did this play years ago, and I was fortunate to play flute in the orchestra. Beautiful, complicated score, like many things Sondheim composed. My favorite thing was they put Snow White and Sleeping Beauty behind glass in the lobby, one on each side. Snow White was sweeping, Sleeping Beauty was sewing before the show. During intermission they were both asleep. Then when they appeared at the end of the show, it was like an Easter Egg for the audience.

Kemi, I'm so glad you watched this one! 🧚‍♀ It was an episode of AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE which aired on PBS in March of 1991. I'd known the music since college in 1987. The brilliance comes from the performances, of course, but mostly from Stephen Sondheim's lyrics. He also wrote lyrics for such Broadway-musicals-which-became-movies like WEST SIDE STORY (1961), GYPSY (1962), SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET (2007) and a more recent WEST SIDE STORY (2021). You should watch those, too. They are as intricate, clever and meaningful. 🧚‍♂ Thank you, again, for your reaction... and I'm so glad this production appealed to you! 🧚

I had the fortune to work with some very talented teenagers, and we made an adaption of this production, where I turned the songs into recitals. To me the Disney movie version seemed like the heart was taken out of the story; which is very obviously displayed here in the stage production. Along with a lot of the important messages shown here in the play seemed to be gone from the movie version.

What a wonderful reaction! This is such a wonderful production, and more complete and richer than the film. The movie just didn’t have the spirit that this version had. And they cut out the the reprise of the Princes’ “Agony” from the second act. That was a true crime! LOL.
I highly recommend the Broadway version of another Sondheim-Lapine musical called “Sunday in the Park with George.” It’s brilliant, if more esoteric than “Into the Woods.” It’s all about art and the life of artists. There are several cast members from ITW in it as well.

I have been inlove with this musical since it opened. I purchased the original cast album as soon as it went on sale. I saw this video on its original showing and it just deepened my love of it and what it said, Finally I saw it on stage with one of the original touring company, So with my history I could not bring myself to see the movie, especially when I heard how they gutted the story, I am glad that you decided to watch the stage production. As someone who worked in theatre I still love a live production. Movie are great but once you see a live show there is nothing as special. Those moments can never be repeated, so we are lucky to have a video record.

The princes are a great source of comedy. But I also think their “agony” is real. Their bravado is covering up a deeper emptiness, stemming from a life without consequences. This is subtly hinted at in lines like “What’s so intriguing, or half so fatiguing, as what’s out of reach?”, or “The harder to get, the better to have.”
Since everything is at their fingertips, nothing really drives or interests them unless it’s something they can’t have. This is best summarized in “Moments” where the same moment clearly holds different significance to both he and the Baker’s Wife. Afterwards she concludes “If life were made of moments, even now and then a bad one. But if life were only moments, then you’d never know you had one” The Princes can’t even find joy, or appreciate the “moments” they have, because they all come so easily to them.

10:59 - I don’t think we’re _supposed_ to approve of the Wife’s rationalization when they trade with Jack for Milky White. It’s meant to make us aware. of _our own_ potential capacity for deceit and self deception; not because we are mean, or evil, but simply (as you said) out of desperation.
27:42 - It is interesting to compare and contrast this Witch with Mother Gothel in Tangled. The actions of both are similar in many ways, but the Witch genuinely loves Rapunzel (even if that love is deeply toxic) whereas Mother Gothel is purely using her “daughter” for the powers of her hair.

    We got more Sondheim! ❤
Sweeney Todd is my favorite of his.
Anyways I hope you get to watch Knives Out and Glass Onion.

When you have a full cast of trained stage singers + Sondheim's work 🤌
    There's no contest.
You may also enjoy the work of Andrew Lloyd Webber. His version of Phantom of the Opera is what most people think of, and there is also an ok movie adaptation (the one with Gerard Butler and Patrick Wilson).
