The Phantom is not jealous of his student's accomplishments or outgrowing him; it's the learned expectation of the response of those who have seen his ugliness. When Christine pulls off his mask, it's disrespect, it's insurrection, it's a power shift. She is beautiful and talented and can go where she likes, is accepted anywhere by anyone. But the Phantom is caged by the violent rejection of others when they see his face. He has had that reaction all his life, from childhood. And when Christine pulls off his mask, he is vulnerable again, naked, and (in his mind) unlovely and unlovable. He knows disgust, he knows disdain, he knows contempt and pity, he has even developed respect for his musical and intellectual abilities. But he's never known love and it's love he wants most. But he has long time past ceased to have hope that anyone could see his face and still love him, could touch his roughened features and still feel tenderness, after so many years being treated reflexively like a freak and a monster. And with murder, he has become a monster.
Until Chistine pulled off his mask, he managed to even convince himself that he could bend reality. He convinced himself his appreciative, worshipful pupil would love him. But he never thought it all the way through. And when Christine pulled off the mask, she tore through his fantasy to the reality. For him, his face is a stubborn reality. Listen to the lyrics of his songs; they all speak of visuals being cold, heartless. Night and darkness hide the reality, allows him to soften the details, make it fantasy and stagecraft. But Christine tore off the mask and made his shame known. Once she saw his face, he knows it can't be unseen and he is victim to her reaction, which he expects to be just like he has always experienced. Taking off his mask was not much different than tearing out his heart and hope.
There's a great report on RUclips from 1988, filmed as the musical was preparing to open on Broadway.
Put "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA MUSICAL on ABC News 20/20 1988" into the RUclips search bar.
The report will tell you exactly what taking off the mask (and 'Christine' handing it back) meant.

Never has a Phantom show made me so emotional.
Ramin is simply beautiful as the Phantom - his music of the night always leaves me in chills, tears and just fills me with so much joy. his entire performance is exquisite and i can’t think of any other actor who has done THAT for me.
his final layer is on another level - i can’t get through it without crying; the way he imitates the Monkey and his “Christine, i love you” will always be my favourite. my GOD it breaks my heart.
Sierra and Hadley are perfect as well, they’re phenomenal and every time they are on stage i just can’t help but smile.
And them bringing Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, John Owen Jones (another favourite of mine), Colm Wilkinson, Anthony Warlow and Peter Jöback on at the end was sensational.
All in all, i could watch this performance everyday for the rest of my life and never get tired of it. i loved it when it first came out and i will love it for many many years to come

Phantom was written specifically for Sarah when she married Andrew Lloyd Webber. And Michael was cast mostly because he had the same vocal coach as Sarah, and her and Andrew often arrived early for her lessons and would listen to the end of Michael's sessions.

    • @ifeelpretty5790
      @ifeelpretty5790 4 месяца назад +3

@@kelly9876 Michael was also mainly known for the comedy show, Some Mothers Do Have Em, where he did a lot of slapstick and comedic stunts so while Andrew had found out through Michael and Sarah sharing the same singing teacher that Michael could really sing the role as he wrote it (he originally intended it as a rock musical like many of his other shows and had a rock singer in mind for the Phantom but he gradually began to write the score as more operatic which meant that he couldn’t cast the rock singer), the media thought he was crazy for casting an actor associated with slapstick comedy. Boy did they get proven wrong! Michael Crawford received widespread praise for her performance and originated the role both in London and on Broadway, where he won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical.

I think the removal of the mask to Christine is seeing the phantom for who he is good and bad, seeing him as a whole. For the phantom, the mask is a protection, an ideal he wants to be and for Christine. When Christine removes that projection, the Phantom fears Christine will not accept him.
    Great reaction xx

Thank you so much for pointing out the ring at 43:48 ! When I first saw this (at 12 when it came out, god how time flies), that was the thing that made me realize it was the Phantom. Not the voice, not the weight.outline difference, it was the ring.
This was the musical that got me into musicals. I had seen a couple (Mamma Mia, Beauty and the Beast) when younger since my family has always loved musical theatre, but I had always been slightly afraid of Phantom of the Opera, My mom dragged me along to see this production in theaters and I'm so happy she did because it made me fall in love with musicals. I even got to see this show twice live on Broadway! This is such an amazing production and I'm so happy it was filmed
Its really such a great story, with phenomal music. Its heartbreaking, its beautiful, its funny. What more can you ask? I'm so happy you enjoyed this show, its so incredible and I'm so happy you got to experience the emotion and power behind this!!!
I recommended this under your Les Mis concert video, but I highly recommend both Falsettos and Bye Bye Birdie! Another movie musical I forgot but think you would enjoy is Hairspray (2007)! Its fun, its hard hitting, and it has a great cast and music!

Fun fact: Hadley Fraser (Raoul) was doing regular performances as Javert in Les Mis on the West End while preparing to play his role in this, and he'd never done any role in Phantom before. Hey, I have a fun fact for you, I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet. But, Ramin Karimloo(the Phantom) also played Christine's father on the Phantom of the Opera movie 2004.
Although the movie might be a shorter version of the play. It shows more of a backstory of what happened to the Phantom when he was a child and how he met Madame Giry.
Perhaps you might not care for the movie version 🤷
But, that's what got me into the play in the first place, back in highschool. And I went on a deep dive of the Phantom of the Opera. Between collecting all the various movies and the horror movies of it and the book 😁

They really wasted Ramin in that role 😂 he would’ve been so much better than Gerard Butler. I like Butler in other movies but he was really miscast in that role. Emmy Rossum is a gorgeous singer but at 16 years old and filming the movie, her voice was not as developed as it was by the time the movie was actually released two years later and she was singing on talk shows to promote it; her voice sounded SO much fuller and richer by then. Overall, that movie has a LOAD of problems for me personally and not just the casting. I’m really glad that this 25th Anniversary performance was my first exposure to Phantom and not the underwhelming movie.

I'm not sure if they explain it in the video, but the man who came out at the end to introduce Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman was Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wrote the incredible music. He was married to Sarah Brightman when the musical opened, and I'm assuming he wrote the part of Christine for her. I haven't seen this production--I'll have to check it out! @@luciuscabralzenardo2897thank you. I study literature, including ancient literature and Biblical literature and teach that at a university level. The sequel is literarily an excellent story. It is set in a different place ( but the only place it could be set). Erik could not go to London to escape what he did in Paris. At that time in History, The Elephant Man was being made a spectacle of and Jack the Ripper was on his murdering spree. The Phantom could not have lived safely or freely or quietly. Also the setting of the show is genius, where in his young life he was a slave in a gypsy carnival where he was physically ( and almost sexually abused - resulting in his first killing) he is in Coney Island, a notorious place for immorality and 'freak shows", but there he is not a slave but is the brain behind it's biggest "freak show" attraction. He is in control of the show rather than a victim and therefore is living in exile but not hiding like he had to in Paris. No one knows what's under the mask there. So, that's many peoples objections. But it is logical, correct, and very smart AND it makes sense in that the past is coming back but now he's in control. Powerful. The story is 10 years later, so it's the first decade of the new century a century that cast off the superstitions that allowed Erik to be a "phantom" a ghost! It's an age of rationalism and skepticism about The supernatural. Erik adapts to that but now has no cover to hide behind. The events at Paris changed everyone. What it took to get to America and set the Phantom up changed key characters. But tragedy and suffering does that to people. That's life. We don't always change for the better either. So the changes in the main characters make sense to the way people change in life given the events they faced. This sequel is structured exactly like the first story and unfolds with the same moments of strife, relation, rejection, revenge, and ultimatums. The ending is ideal! The story unfolds as it should. Nothing is contrived or forced and it doesn't feel generic. There is a massive surprise which changes the Phantom forever and makes him fully human. This is a story of forgiveness, redemption, and transformation. It is beautiful though set in a creepy ugly place. But that's Erik's personal story. He's truly a beautiful person trapped in an ugly body who was so mistreated by everyone in his life that his soul became distorted and ugly. Now his soul gets to heal, but at what cost?! You will see if you choose to watch it. I think the critics of the show have jumped on the bandwagon of hating it because it's "cool" to nay say. But ... From a literary standpoint it's genius and told exactly as it should have. Musically it's outstanding! You will hear small bits of the original music in the new show at moments when the events are similar to what happened in the past or you are meant to experience the emotion of a scene the same way you did in the first. That is what makes Andrew Lloyd Webber a genius. It's a very effective tool in musical story telling. But the music in this show is beautiful!! I find that most people, when they want a sequel they really just want the same story told just a little differently. They don't like wholly new stories. That's sad and that's not a sequel. That's lazy and not creative. What ALW did was creative, brilliant, and beautiful. The sequel is MORE emotional than the first. It's ending ... Very bitter with pain BUT very beautiful with hope!!! Most critics see the Phantom as a silly horror movie monster. That is NOT the Phantom in these musicals and the critics don't see that. He's a broken wounded man who just wants to be loved- he wants what we all want but it's something he's never had. Yesterday's comments showed that too many people don't see that and reject the very idea. How sad!!! My wife, all our adult kids, and several other people I know loved the sequel as much as the origina, but not as much as mel. So even though a lot of people trash the sequel here on RUclips, I don't care what they say. I never listen to professional critics, nor do I listen to RUclips critics. Nobody decides for me what I like or don't like or decides what is good or not good. I have studied music since I was 5 years old. I teach literature, ancient, modern, and Biblical literature. From a literary and musical standpoint "Love Never Dies" is BRILLIANT!!! SO many metaphors and ironies at play. The story is tragic but beautiful, painful but joyful, it's a story of love, forgiveness, acceptance, and redemption. How can anyone not like stories like that?! Liking things is subjective. But using tools of literature and music to determine the quality of a musical story is objective. From that point the sequel is brilliant. On a personal level - subjective - I love it. I connect to this story very intimately and personally, and on that level love what the story tells. I think, if you give it a chance, you'll like it. If you don't that's ok. Just give it a fair shake and consider what I've said here. Make up your own mind. Don't let nay sayers keep you from enjoying something if you like it. They all say the same thing "it's bad fan fiction." Since every critic repeated that tired nonsensical line, it only shows me they operate according to census and group think and are not critically analyzing the story with any depth or thoughtfulness and are content to repeat other people's complaints without truly explaining their actual personal objections. I don't respect that at all. I DO respect those who disagree with me but cogently examine their viewpoint. That's fair. It's "cool" to trash something popular to make oneself look intelligent and open-minded when in fact doing so is quite the opposite. I have no use for group think or "cool" trendiness, or the consensus view. So, I encourage you to watch it. I think it's wonderful and the perfect sequel both on an objective scale of literature and music, and the subjective scale of personal preference and taste. Whatever you decide do it for you. Don't let anyone's opinion decide for you. I find no shame in loving the sequel. I waited 25 years for it and I was in no way a let down. I love both shows wholeheartedly. Maybe you will too, maybe you won't. But at least you gave it a chance without others telling what you should do and what you should or shouldn't like. If you do watch it I would love to have your thoughts on it.

@@StoptheInsanityofRegressivism I could not disagree more. I'm absolutely one of those people who spout that same opinion about it feeling contrived and like a soap opera; and I stand by that. I think it's a bad story, if for no other reason that the foundation for the sequel is entirely unstable and character motivation is ridiculous. Allow me to present my case:
How does the original story end? The Phantom threatens to murder Christine's fiance if she does not marry him and "consummate their marriage," taking away all of her agency. She responds with physical affection, which quells his emotional distress, seeing it as a kindness and appreciating her forgiveness. He lets them leave, and they all agree, "Hey, let's not do this again." Piangi is dead, the opera house is burning, the end. Fin.
...and theeeen Christine goes and "lays with" the Phantom--the man who threatened her freedom, lied to her for years about being a heaven-sent angel, and murdered her fellow performers---like, THE NIGHT of her wedding??? Why? Cause that music is REALLY SEXY! Let's sing TWO SONGS RIGHT about how good the sex was! ♪ AND I TOUCHED YOU--AND I KISSED YOU--AND I FELT YOU--♪ Someone get Weber a cold washcloth...
I don't think Weber writes women well, at least not here. And why the complete 180 on Raoul's character? Why couldn't Christine get a happy ending with someone who was safe, kind, and her age?
The Phantom learned... NOTHING. He didn't move on, he didn't get a new protégé. Instead, he tricked a woman and her family into working for him, held her child off a high balcony to show he's not beneath murdering a child to get what he wants, and allowed a young woman in his care to wh*re herself out on behalf of his business. I disagree with you saying he's in control--yes, he has a business he can hide behind, but he doesn't take interest in it like he did the opera. He's stuck in the past, fretting over Christine. Coney Island is a means to an end, and I think the only reason it's working is because there's two women in his life enabling his terrible decisions, fiscal and otherwise. His actions, inactions, and the irresponsible management of his employees lead directly to the death of a woman (gasp, she's got a gun!), and in the end... they all forgive him? And he gains custody of a child? It feels so entirely unjustified/undeserved. The sequel dashes any growth the Phantom experienced in the first story against the rocks and it's sad. He's more of a villain than ever, with less of an excuse. Maybe you find that beautiful and redemptive but I think that's just a lousy cash grab of a show.
...but people should like what they like. I listen to some of the songs every once in a while ("Beauty Underneath" is pretty fun). The performers are all talented, including the young boy. But with the dramatic entrances, camera zooms, and hit-or-miss character motivation, it feels more like... "Phantom of the Soap Opera."

I’ve seen this show like, 4 times in various national tours. It used to be my favorite musical back in my teens and twenties. I’m not really a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber and once I saw Les Mis that became my favorite-the music is absolutely sublime. But I still really enjoy the artistry of Phantom-the costuming alone is spectacular. Masquerade might be my favorite from this show simply because of how visually stunning it is.

This was the first musical I ever heard, saw and fell in love with (in the early 90s) and this production really does do it justice. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! The character arc of the Phantom is so amazing, and my heart bleeds for him every time I hear or see the end scene, when he finally realises that her heart will never truly belong to him in the way he wants her. Because he loved her as a woman, while she loved him as a teacher and something of a protector and father figure.

I have a memento from when I saw this play at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans. I have an actual letter written by the Phantom used in the production. It's the one that says, "Dear Firmin, just a brief reminder, my salary has not been paid, send it care of the ghost by return of post...P.T.O. No one likes a debtor, so it's better if my orders are obeyed. O.G" I absolutely will treasure it, because I got it signed by Quentin Oliver Lee who played the Phantom in the production I saw. I found out he died from cancer 2 years later. So sad. 😢

I saw the Phantom of the Opera in Las Vegas live it was beautiful. The phantom is truly a tragic story especially during that time period in which the phantom lived. He was a side show freak and in a traveling carnival, he was physically beaten by the show owner and the crowds. Although he is a genius he becomes something of a mad genius due to the emotional and physical abuse. He suffered as people would throw things at him the owner of the carnival would beat him starve him and the madam she rescued him from that place. He made that place his kind of refuge and became his playground and his creative art and all the years of loneliness somewhat drove him to madness. That's why with Christine his infatuation he has also become very obsessed and possessive of her. He longing for love, no one has ever loved him or showed compassion towards him. I know it get a lot heat but I really do love the movie The Phantom of the opera 2004 with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum also Patrick Wilson. If not her just in your own time you may want to watch it. Loved the reaction.

Keep your hand at the level of your eyes!
Phantom has some amazing songs and dark themes - particularly The Phantom's manipulation of Christine with her father's memory (some might say grooming her) and how he destroys obstacles to her success whether she wants it or not.
The movie version is only ok, but worth watching for Patrick Wilson as Raul and Minnie Driver as Carlotta.

I also watched this not too long ago for the first time, but I've seen the movie from 2004 many times so I knew the story and all the songs. But I was blown away at the production of it. Amazing. My mom went to see this sometime in the early 2000s(pretty sure was this same ensamble??) and she loved it. I'm sure seeing it live was such a great experience.
Imo the Phantom doesn't love her, it's more like he's obsessed with her and the idea of her. I always find it weird when I see people who want them together because he's rather horrible lol. He kills, he lies and manipulates. And I don't think she ever loved him like that either. She's mesmerized with him and I think it's also because she thinks her dad sent him that she felt a connection.
The Phantom Of The Opera song is a very famous one, I'm sure you must've heard that before somewhere??
The part at the graveyard when all 3 of them sing together and overlapping each other is probably my favorite part of this whole thing ❤

The Phantom feels that Christine belongs to him, and him alone, and Raoul is an unwanted rival. She is his prized possession, showing off his brilliance as a musician to the world through her singing. And when Raoul steps in showing her a different kind of love, the Phantom starts doing desperate and deadly things to continue binding her down.

I used to think this was a story that shows how a 15-year-old young woman can be so easily seduced, swayed. She can be manipulated.
But after some reading and watching the whole thing again recently, I think the Phantom is a symbol of the grief over her father's death. And the childhood friend is a symbol of moving on to opportunities for other love beside her father. The grief is darkness and it has bound her. And it is ugly. And it will be so hard for her to turn toward a future that does not have her father's strong presence. When she chooses the Phantom, she is choosing to stay submerged in the memory of her father's love alone, and stay in the darkness and depression.
Note that a couple of times there is a phrase that she may go past the point of no return.
But choosing her childhood friend is to choose a bright future with hope, and life, and freedom.
In the end, she chooses to leave grieving, so the Phantom (staying submerged in grief) dies.

    • @silver1731
      @silver1731 4 месяца назад

Christine is actually around the age of 21, or should be according to the original novel though that has changed in other productions namely the movie musical adaptation where Emmy Rossum was underage while filming most of it. The Phantom is most definitely a foil for her father but not in the sense that he is a replacement for her father but a final parting gift from him. She idolizes him as not a man but something otherworldly. I think your point about the past vs the future is very wise though, she knows her life will remain static if she stays with the phantom and ultimately that’s not what either of them desire for her.
