The first time I saw this, I could not believe that people standing still singing at a mic could evoke such emotion. I cry every single time. I've seen this show multiple times live, and feel fortunate to have this concert to watch any time the mood strikes. IMO, this is the best version
I'm no more than 6 minutes in and I agree. 😮
Fun fact: this concert had TWO Disney princesses in it! Adult Cosette was played by Judy Kuhn who was the singing voice of Pocahontas, and Eponine was played by Lea Salonga who was the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan
Lea's voice was sleek and pure
@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. People tend to say that when Lea's singing, you don't need to look up the lyrics. She's that crystal clear.
I'd say this concert is generally the most revered version. Especially since it's officially labeled as "The Dream Cast" w/ multiple award winners and even three Disney princesses (Lea counts as two). Its only flaw is that certain story-driven songs aren't included such as Marius & Cosette bumping into each other and Gavroche's death scene. One thing you'll notice is that Ms. Salonga is the only non-Caucasian in this cast b/c the setting is 1800s France, but her influence can be seen in the later concerts where more people of color are cast (including her as Fantine in the 25th anniversary).
In 2002, Les Mis was invited to be the first western musical performed in China. They sent the US national tour. They brought in various headliners from the West End (London) and Broadway (New York) to take over the main roles, and Colm Wilkinson came back to as Valjean for the landmark occasion. This new "dream cast" converged on the tour's San Francisco stop and used that run as their rehearsal before flying to China. Fans who watched the theater news closely knew Colm was coming in for only one day, playing the matinee and evening performances, but they did not announce which day it would be, so we had to guess when buying our tickets. When I opened up my program to find his name on one of the understudy slips, I was over the moon! It was one of the best nights I've ever spent in the theater.
I had seen several other excellent performers in the role before, and I'd heard Colm on the cast recordings and seen him in this concert version, so I thought I knew what to expect. I did not. I was completely blown away by his acting as well as his singing. He embodied that role with such depth and nuance that it felt, even though I knew I was watching actors on a stage, as if I was seeing the "real" man Valjean right there in front of me. Being the original and getting to create the role meant that all others have more or less followed the trail he blazed, but the role fit him like his own skin. I suspect I spent most of the performance with my jaw hanging open in astonishment.
After the show, I joined the throng at the stage door to greet the cast as they came out. I got interviewed by a Chinese news crew who were very impressed that I'd seen the show 8 times before with different casts but I was able to assure them that they were getting the best! I might have ended up in promotional footage played in China, who knows? When Colm came out I got to meet him briefly and get a picture and he signed my program, rounding out an absolutely stellar evening. That whole night is one of my favorite memories!
That story is incredible! I've always wanted to see Colm perform in person. ❤
I was so fortunate to get to fly to NYC and see the entire original cast back about a month after it opened. Colm got a 5 minute standing ovation that stopped the show entirely. I was also fortunate to perform with Michael McGuire (Enjolras)in the original concept concert of the Broadway musical A Tale of Two Cities. Love Les Mis, thank you so much for this reaction!
He knew in those last moments. Her last words in the book were a bald declaration of her feelings for him. She made him promise kiss her on the forehead when she died. “And then do you know Monsiuer Marius, I believe I was a little in love with you.” She tried to smile again, and died in his arms.
HEARBREAKING -
I had a crush on Philip Quast for a while after this version of the musical, that's the talanted man who played Javert!
This Valjean is my favorite. This actor is in the movie version as the priest. A lit of what you want to know is in the book. And the connections between various characters are pretty cool. But I warn you it's not an easy read
The redemption message is beautiful to me.
Lea Salonga's On My Own is one of the greatest vocal performances and is considered absolute perfection. On RUclips many vocal teachers discuss it in their reactions. Also, she won a Tony for Miss Saigon, is a legend in musical theater and is a famous Disney vocalist.
She won the Olivier for Miss Saigon as well.
Gosh, Michael Ball as Marius, my favorite!!!
I got to see Colm in The Phantom of the Opera in Toronto, Canada he was AMAZING!
💖👏
Colm Wilksinson is my favorite singer of all time
I am so so glad you’re watching this! This was my introduction to Les miserable and it’s so amazing.
Oh lord, you've come across the one of the greatest musical performances of all time. I've been in love with this production since I was ten years old and still have a hard time watching any other version because they set the bar way too high.
I had this VHS they would play it all the time on PBS. I consider this version a Disney reunion since the lady played Cosett also sang for Pocahontas and the lady that play Eponine sang for Princess Jasmine and Mulan
Lea Salonga has the most beautiful voice! I love her singing in Miss Saigon, too.
My introduction to the amazing world of musical theater. 35 years ago this November, on a rainy Friday evening, I saw the national tour for the first time. My life has been better for it❤
That's amazing--I saw it on national tour when I was a teenager, around 1996. It also was my intro to musical theater and my favorite for a long time. Watching Kemi react to it has reminded me how incredible the songs are when sung by world-class performers.
You can watch so many versions of this show, there is also a 25th anniversary and a 35th staged version. In the 35th, the guy who played Marius in this one played Javert. At the end of the 25th anniversary one there is a version of Bring Him Home done by Colm the original Valjean, the 25th anniversary one - the amazing Alfie Boe, and two other Valjeans. Many of the originals also returned for the 25th at the end. Interesting, in the film of this the priest is played by Colm Wilkinson, who also returns as Valjean is dying to take him to heaven.
I love that you reacted to this--It's by far the best cast recording of Les Miserables, and it's beautiful to see those powerful notes striking someone right in the feels the way only music can. The movie is most definitely worth a watch--Hugh Jackman's singing doesn't come close to Colm Wilkinson's (who actually plays the Bishop in the movie!), but he embodies Valjean really well. Anne Hathaway as Fantine and Eddie Redmayne as Marius are also really good. Russell Crowe as Javert is, sadly, the weakest link when it comes to singing.
There are also a couple of non-musical adaptations--a 1998 film with Liam Neeson as Valjean. It's good, but super condensed for the 2 hour length. Then the BBC did a 6-part miniseries in 2018 that includes more story than even the musical does--Fantine is played by Lily Collins and you see her entire backstory (the most harrowing depiction I've seen). But the acting is again top-notch--David Oyelowo is a fantastic Javert!
I read the whopping brick of a novel back when I was 18, and to answer your question about Eponine, she does tell Marius that she loves him right before she dies. It's worth looking into the historical context--a lot of people mistake it for being about the French Revolution, but in fact it's about the Paris Uprising of 1832. France had a long series of revolutions and uprisings for about 100 years starting in 1789.
This 10th anniversary concert of LES MISERABLES (1995) is called the Dream Cast for a reason!
Lea originated the lead role of Kim in MISS SAIGON in London at age 18 (1989) and Broadway at age 20 (1991) and won every major theater award in both countries for her portrayals. Lea went into the Broadway production of LES MIZ in 1993 at age 22 - the first Asian and the first non-Caucasian to ever play Eponine. It was a very big deal. And then she was asked to be part of this 10th anniversary concert.
LES MIZ is one of the first musicals I ever saw (in the late 80s when I was in high school) and Lea Salonga is one of my favorite performers. :)
The show is about love and redemption. Valjean is transformed after the bishop saves him. The ghosts of Fantine and Eponine visit Valjean on his deathbed because he cared for Cosette and Marius. “To love another person is to see the face of God.”
even just hearing the little snippets from the edit brings me to tears. My all time favorite show. This is one of the best casts on video (they all are good with a couple of individuals who don't meet the mark). Love this. I appreciate how much you seem to enjoy this. :)
Thank you SO much for reacting to this! This was my introduction to Les Miserables!
I’ve seen the musical two times in London and once here in Sweden but many years ago.
Nothing comes close to live performances.
The nuance in their voices is unique for musical theatre performers I think. Regular actors with a good singing voice don’t always get there.
All of them did a LOT more belting in this compared to actual productions. Standing still helped of course, but I think they were all trying to kind of one up each other a bit, too.
@@facts2741 Sure, this is an anniversary performance after all.
So many iconic songs in this show. Definate tear jerkers!
I highly recommend you react to the 25th Anniversary edition of The Phantom Of The Opera at The Royal Albert Hall.. It's AMAZING!!
coming to this channel next week
@ScenecrlyK.S.O. Oh cool! Can't wait for you to see it.. 💯👍
I got the CD and DVD of this as soon as it was available. After over 20 years it still makes tear up. So glad you watched this!!!!!
I Love this version!❤
Beautiful. I saw this particular cast perform Les Mis when they came here to Los Angeles CA back in the day.♥️ it
This is my favorite musical, so I'm so happy you enjoyed it!!! Some other musical suggestions (and keeping in mind you've said you reacted to 25th avvinversary Phantom of the Opera, another favorite of mine) are Falsettos, the proshoot from 2017, and Bye Bye Birdie, a movie musical from 1963.
Falsettos is an amazing and heartbreaking story of a Jewish family breaking up in the late 1970s when the father comes out as gay and his affair is revealed. The family, the boyfriend, and their psychiatrist try to work out how life is now and what it means for them. This show is one of my favorites, I even have a tattoo of a line. The music is great and the story is even better. The cast is super small (only 7 total) and the set is super minimalistic but its so imaginative
Bye Bye Birdie is a great and funny movie in my opinion. Its a satire of how the teenage population was affected by Elvis being drafted to war. The songs are super catchy and fun, plus the cast is great. Elvis, who the musical is parodying, was actually interested in the role of Birdie (his parody) by his agent thought it wouldn't be a great look for him lol. I'm kinda glad he isn't in it because I think it makes the satire better
I hope you consider these!
I usually don't comment twice on the same video, but let me put two other In Concerts to check out...MISS SAIGON 25TH ANNIVERSARY (almost broke me completely) and CHESS IN CONCERT (written by Tim Rice and the guys ftom ABBA). Tim Rice has said this is now the definitIve CHESS. And that encore with the 17 Valjeans singing in his native language seamlessly? Mind...BLOWN!
This is such an amazing production, and I'm glad you got to experience it. In my opinion it's the best cast ever. And while all of them are great, Philip Quast (Javert) remains my favourite - not only is his voice spectacular, but his ACTING!! The steel in his eyes at the end of Stars, and his anguish when he loses his rock-solid conviction at the end... Gives me goosebumps every time!
I love how you are invested in our national treasure 🇫🇷🤭
Like « i need some pop corn for this » 😂
Love seeing a reaction to this version! All the singers knocked it out of the park in this!
Colm Wilkinson and Phillip Quast are amazing, probably my favorite Valjean-Javert duo.
Javert is an amazing character. It's easy to hate him, but he really is a fascinating character IMO (even more so in the book, obviously). I can't agree with any of his actions, but it doesn't mean I can't be fascinated by him.
The 2012 movie is.. hmm... how should I put it? Not as good. But it will give you the full story that was edited out for this concert, so maybe it is worth watching (but don't expect this level of performances...)
Thank you for reacting to this truly tear-jerking recording, one of my all-time favorites
Yay! My aunt and uncle had this on video when I was younger. I always wanted to watch it. Since then I have been able to see it 2 times on stage. Love the music!
I saw this many years ago on PBS as a fund raiser. Instantly fell in love with it. It was so fortunate that they gave those little clips of information so that you would have some idea of what was going on. That prepared me for seeing the entire performance on stage. Amazing. No wonder it was in London for so many years and I believe on Broadway too. The movie is good but a whole 'nother ball of wax. Wonderful in its own way. Thank you for reacting to this though it was a little hard on us who love the songs (but I understand the copyright issues you face)
Thanks, Kemi! 🥖 I love this and saw the full play on Broadway in 1993. The incomparable *Colm* *Wilkinson* who played 'Jean Valjean' in the above video also portrays the bishop (with the silver candlesticks) in the 2012 movie! I hope to see you react to it someday... it tells the story clearly. 🕯🕯
Colm Wilkinson became the first Phantom in Toronto back in the 90's. I always wished I could have seen Lea Salonga in Miss Saigon or as Eponine.
This was a concert version so the dialogue was sacrificed. I finally got to read the spoken scenes which filled in some of the details. Still my favorite version of one of my favorite musical.
There is no dialogue in Les Miserables, it's entirely sung through.
@@hannahbrennan2131 There are short snippets of dialogue but it is just a few lines here and there usually with music underneath it so it is not as obvious.
I know this because I have the full score/libretto of it. It is like the dialogue you would see in some of Mozart's opera where he chose spoken word instead of a reciitative.
If you EVER get to see this live, sell everything you have and go. It's worth it. This show is sooooo GOOD!!!!
Also a couple of other tidbits. Colm Wilkinson was also Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde on the very first concept CD of Jekyll and Hyde. Several of the songs from that recording were cut or significantly modified when It opened on B'way. Also in the movie of Les Mis, Francis Ruffelle who was the original Eponine in London and on B'way has a cameo as one of the whores. She is given screen credit.
Oooooof one of my all time favorites! I can't waittttt
Also if you liked this you definetly neeeeed to watch Hamilton (2020) its a musical much like this. Thanks for the content❤
i’m so excited!! 😊 les miserables is one of my favorite musicals of all time! the book is amazing as well (albeit wordy)
Lea Salonga's casting as Eponine was a bit of an uphill battle. She made her major theater debut playing Kim in _Miss Saigon,_ another musical made by Boubil and Schonberg, the same duo that made _Les Mis._ Despite Lea scoring both an Olivier and Tony Award (being the first Asian woman to win a Tony), she was barred from being in _Les Mis_ due to her being Asian. It was only when Disney got her to provide Jasmine's singing voice in _Aladdin_ when producers finally relented and brought her in as Eponine, both for the musical and for this concert. She would eventually reappear in the 25th anniversary concert in 2010 playing Fantine, where Samantha Barks would eventually play Eponine in Tom Hooper's film version in 2012.
The part where Eponine delivers the letter is cut from the concert version.
Btw, I'm not saying you should do this on your reaction channel cuz there might be legal issues but... there's plenty of bootleg recordings of the full stage musical(not the concert version) on youtube if you wanna experience the musical in its original form
This is hands down my favorite play of all time, it is a true masterpiece!! Thank you for your genuine reaction!!! You should watch the 25th anniversary version as well!! For comparison
I saw this show live back in the early 90s and it remains my favorite of all time!
I know this is the premier cast, but I would love to see you react to the movie! The 2012 film with Hugh Jackman was what got me into musicals in high school and it holds a special place in my heart. The singing isn't the best, but the cinematography is stunning! Anne Hathaway won an Oscar for her performance and it's such a beautiful film. Thank you for reacting to my favorite show!
I just got tickets for the les mis arena tour next year and I'm so excited 😃
I’ve seen the musical live in the west end three times I cried every time
I absolutely love this show
Just FYI KSO, the show is actually coming to Toronto live this spring, check it out if you can.
Always in tears listening to Colm 😢 proud of my fellow Irish!☘️
Ruthie Henshall as Fantine 👏🏻👏🏻 tears every time!
You will love it!
I have this entire anniversary special on tape! I recorded it when it first aired yrs ago. I love it!😢😭
A wonderful musical for sure! God Bless to you from my mom and I in So. Cal USA 🇺🇸
Please check out Phantom of the Opera. My favorite all time musical. Rumored to be the longest running show on broadway. Sadly it had to close its doors after COVID but it’s an amazing musical 🎤 ❤️❤️❤️🥰
Love to all reading this from wherever you are!
Besides Les Mis, Victor Hugo also wrote the Hunchback of Notre Dame. My science teacher in high school absolutely loved Les Mis. Iconic numbers for sure! Wish more high schools would put it on but it’s a breath big musical. ❤️❤️
Keep up the amazing work! ❤️
Phantom of the Opera is on Patreon already.
If you watch the film version you should know that all the actors sang live. They usually record the songs ththen lip sink.
I hope you see the encore at the end with dozens of Jean Valjeans from around the world!!! It's very special..
i saw it in broadway years ago with this cast
The 2012 film is kind of atrocious after watching the stunning Broadway performances, so I recommend watching the non-musical film from 1998 starring Liam Neeson to get details on the story. The director for the 2012 film forces his cast to actually sing live for each take, tiring out their vocal chords which is *extremely* noticeable in a lot of scenes. He also doesn't require his cast to sing live to the music or even to a click track to keep them on tempo, just lets them sing at whatever changing beat they wish (and then the poor orchestra has to try to keep up with them after shooting is done.)
ONE DAY MORE
Definitely not enough praise for Philip Quast, the definitive Javert. I saw him in the Manchester production in the early 1990's and still have the CD cast recording. The Innkeeper you though you knew is Alun Armstrong who has been in everything from The Mummy Returns to Sleepy Hollow. You now need to compare the 10th Anniversary and the 2012 film.
To really understand what happens in the story, you can watch the film that came out in 2012. OR you could read the book if you want ample details ;)
And I was there…what a night it was!
I love this musical. This anniversary concert is amazing. I see that you're reacting to the 1995 Pride and Prejudice. I can't wait to watch that because it's my favorite movie. It's so much better than the 2005 movie.
I love all the different casts but the 25th edition is my favorite
I haven’t read the book unfortunately but I’m under the impression that Marius didn’t know about Eponine’s feelings. It was her secret.
Also, this Eponine is a Disney princess. She’s the voice of Mulan and Jasmine 🙂
She does tell him in the book, right as she's dying.
@@melanie62954 Ah, ok! 👍🏼
Judy Kuhn (singing voice of Pocahontas) is in this as well. She played Cosette in this, the 10th Anniversary production, and then Fantine in the 25th anniversary. So 2 Disney Princesses in this production.
@@facts2741 You’re right! I forgot 🙂
Colm is great but the 2 knockout performances are from Ruthie Henshall as Fantine singing ""I Dreamed a Dream" and Lea Salonga as Eponine singing "On My Own". The two also have a powerful performances in "Miss Saigon" from the same composer of Les Mis.
Nah... Colm was No. 1 - he owned the songs he sang. Half the time I didn't hear the words but I heard his voice till the very end. With Fantine - the song owned her - she is great but the lyrics evoked my tears. Eponine's voice was the best of all - she should have played Fanzine.
@ScenecrlyK.S.O. don't talk about things you don't understand. Wilkinson is great and so is henshall. Splitting hairs when criticizing is fun, but saying a song owned her is absurd and you sound like a dilettante. And yes, Lea Salonga went on to play fantine in the 25th anniversary. She didn't sing "I dreamed a dream" at the same level ruthie Henshall did. But Lea Salonga is still one of the greatest performers of her generation.
Have a glass of water - you will be fine, my opinion will not change to suit yours.
@@ScenecrlyK.S.O.opinions can be objectively wrong. Yours is wrong about henshall with that particular song. Everything else is cool. Wilkinsons performance of "bring him home" makes me tear up every time. He says that weber actually wrote the phantom of the opera part for him, and you can tell when he sings the high notes for that part. They soar. I'm a huge fan.
A so beautiful story written by Victor Hugo
Just for clarification, Jean Valjean is NOT the father! 😂 His confession is that he had been a convict who was hiding from the law. He never told his backstory to Cosette. He didn't want to bring shame to her. They hid away in a convent for 10 years after he took her from the Thenardiers so that she could get an education and he could stay safe.
It made me chuckle when you kept giving the eyeroll to Javert. Leave us alone! 😂😂
I love this cast, this is my favorite Les Miz Cast -- i love all of them- Colm.is my fave Jean Valjean, Philip Quast fave Javer, Michael Ball fave Marius, Lea Salonga fave Eponine ❤
A musical that I would HIGHLY recommend is Elisabeth das Musical, about Empress Elisabeth of Austria. As it is an Austrian musical it is in German not English, but there are multiple professional recordings with fanmade English subtitles on youtube. My favorite production is the 2002 Essen production, which is on youtube with subs but I'm pretty sure it's a bootleg so you might not watch that on your channel. The ones on youtube with subs that I know are official authorized recordings are the original 1992 cast(this recording is of the dress rehearsal, not the official performance), and the 2005 revival. I'm not quite sure which one of those two to recommend tbh, because there are mutliple songs that were added after the 1992 production so the 1992 one feels slightly incomplete to me without those songs, but at the same time no one can beat Pia Douwes as Elisabeth(though her performance in 1992 was not as breathtaking as in 2002, which is part of why 2002 is my fav, but she's still a better singer in 1992 than the actress playing Elisabeth in 2005)
You really need to read the book to get all the details of the story. The musical movie with Hugh Jackman doesn’t really give more information.
Wonderful show....the 2012 film let me down because of the music. This performance has punch and passion. My favourite line is "To Love Another Person Is To See The Face Of God"
You need to watch the 25th anniversary version which starred Alfie Boe as Valjean. Equally as amazing as Colm was.
Ruthie Henshall the best Fantine
The 2012 movie might not have singing performances that are nearly as good(well, some are great but not all) but in terms of immersion and better understanding of the story I would highly recommend it
I CANNOT WAIT. ALFIE BOE IS TRANSCENDENT!!!
I love Colm Wilkinson!
me too
Michael Ball's Empty Chairs at Empty Tables gets me every time aI hear it. The 10th Anniversary edition is in almost every way superior to the 25th.
This is Not the more popular version. But I think its one of the best!
"To love another person is to see the face of God"
Yes, you have to watch the movie of 2012. You can't compare the singing with that of professional singers, but the acting is amazing. Please also react to Miss Saigon Manila 2000 upscaled with Lea Salonga (Eponine) in leading role. Have tissues ready !!!

Les Miserables for me is the one with Liam Neeson, Uma Thurman and the wonderful Geoffrey Rush ❤ best version of a masterpiece 😊
It’s very very good but this musical does it for me.
I’ll take most versions of Les Miserables though. I read the book when I was 10 after seeing this very musical version.
Been obsessed ever since
@@Angelicwings1 How in the world did a 10 year old make it through the book? Are you serious? I read it at 18 and even then it took me almost 2 months!
@@melanie62954I’m autistic and loved things way above my age level. Books were my escape. I adore them.
@@melanie62954I love books and I love musicals and Les Miserables was my hyperfixation along with the Titanic.
It took me a while to get through as well but I loved it.
Victor gets very wordy and goes into every detail of everything about everyone but it all comes into play.
