I 100% recommend learning a martial art. I did karate for 10 years and when I stopped for exams and college I really regretted it. It's a good way to stay in shape, you learn how to effectively defend yourself and it's a lot of fun, plus sparring with the pads is really fun. Idea for Comfort Zone perhaps?
Last year I started telling this lady friend I love her. She really appreciated it, though I dunno if we'll ever be more than just friends. Still, it feels good when I say it to her, especially when I'm in a lousy mood or something.

Hey Meg so i have a typical problem, i have very strong feelings for a close friend of mine, and before we became friends she told me to never ask her out because most of her past friends have asked her out and she always just pushes them away, so i promised her i wouldn't, after month of getting to know her, and her getting to know me, i developed strong feelings for her, i care about her, the same way she cares about me. So i ended up telling her that i liked her but i didn't want my feelings to get in the way of our friendship because i love our relationship so much, since then things between us have been better than ever, except now i really want to be with her. This girl is amazing, she has so many traits that i love in a person, she is smart, cute, very dorky, HAS RED HAIR, she is the most beautiful girl i have ever known, and is so sweet she has the biggest heart out of anyone i know. This girl is just incredible and what i love most about her is that she's not perfect, her and i are slimier in so many ways, one being that we are both shy people, we are awkward, and i feel like that's why our friendship works. It's those imperfections that she has that makes me really care about her, and have these feelings for her, we have gone through so many slimier pains in life, and i want her to know that. I don't want to be just another one of those guys who failed with her, i want to be her friend, i want her to trust me, i want her to allow me to be there for her, i want to tell her how exactly i feel about her. I want to say more, not just "hey i like you because i think you're nice and pretty" no i want to explain to her that this is why i like you, and i don't want to pressure you in a relationship, but this is why i like you, and why you are so important to me. SO I ASK YOU MEG, should i tell her how i feel about her. PLEASE REPLY I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!

Anyways I totally agree that you should say it when you feel it. Personally I haven't felt any barrier blocking me or anything when I felt it. I think people get way too invested in the words and not the emotions.

I agree with you about, "I love you." If it makes the person uncomfortable (even if you make it clear you're not expecting instant reciprocation) then maybe there was never a future in it.
If, on the other hand, it makes them *more* comfortable, then they won't be so worried about being on their best behavior, and you'll get a better look at their *worst* behavior... which is important, because, while we all have our flaws, some few can be super emotionally abusive, and hide it well, until they think you're on the hook.
If the person you love, turns out to be, on their worst day, not really so bad.... well, that's just great!

My girlfriend and i just said it and the girl who put us together heard us and saw us say it to each other and she practically cried and she said we're cute. I think you just know when you feel it. We always felt it but we didn't say it till we were ready and very sure of how we felt so its like an innate feeling you get and it just feels right :)
With my last girlfriend it took me more than a year until I first told her I loved her. I didn't want to say it unless I actually meant it. It did feel a little awkward when she told me she loved me and I couldn't honestly say it back to her. I think she realized that and didn't say it that often, because she didn't want me to feel pressured into having to say something back. Of course I did let her know that she meant a lot to me. I have to admit it felt really good to be able to say "I love you" (or well, the equivalent in German and Dutch) to her when she did, instead of being all awkward and not knowing what to say.
