- Slash is one of the most legendary guitarists of all time. What can we say about Slash that hasn’t already been said? In this video, Seymour Duncan lends his guitar pickup expertise and shares some insights into the original Les Paul that Slash used during some of his most iconic moments-including recording Guns N’ Roses’ debut album, Appetite for Destruction.
Interested in achieving Slash's guitar tone? Start with the source-check out some of our pickups below (including the exact model that Slash's tech, Ace Bergman, installs in Slash's guitars):

I don't know why but every so often I see this video pop up and decide to watch it again.
I guess it is the nostalgia of the instrument and the iconic guy working on it that brings me back.
Same here
Same here
Same, this is the 5th time I've seen this.
It’s not the replica…it’s all Slash! Gibson owes him
Same with me.
I love people joking on the guy doing the work, I guess they don't realize that Seymour Duncan himself. :D
Oh shit srsly? Lol
It says it in the title!
Stop making fun of my mom!
Duncan got his start in the hometown I grew up in at a guitar store where many yrs later I bought my first “real” Strat a Fender. on the east coast than he moved to California. He would practice winding pups on an old record player in that store which is now sadly gone.
santa joking uhh dont clown that s MR.PICKUPS HIMSELF Seymou D.uncan
notice the title reads Slash's Appetite for Destruction guitar and not Gibson Les Paul replica.....that's good PR. Well done SD.
Jorge Barreto - the tour and video for sure, just not the whole album apparently if Slash got the guitar toward the tail end of the recordings.
It was the whole album, minus My Michelle. Slash recorded the album with a Jackson but rerecorded all of his parts, using an SG for My Michelle and the Les Paul copy for the rest. He said he did a song a day.
its ironic that the Les paul guitar that revived gibson company its not even made by them
Terry Kath yep. It was. a Gibson copy that his then manager had someone made for him. How ironic, I bet that guitar is priceless now.
Juan. Lega it wasn't made for him. band manager bought it because Slash wasn't happy with his guitars on appetite.
NotoriousYeshi, right. I was corrected in another video. apparently the guitar was already made and his then manager bought it for him. I'm not sure if slash being unhappy with his old guitars was the reasoning behind the purchase. I think I read on his "slash's" book that he kept on pawning his gear to buy drugs.....
Not even the pickups. :)
that "Gibson" headstock name logo... it's so *not* Gibson... looks more Chibsonesque. interesting thing is Gibson make their AFD sigs with a fairly different maple pattern too... like they had to make it their own somehow. you could get a more accurate sig from china.
Wow, I just saw the inside of the guitar that was used to record Welcome to the fucking Jungle. Talk about neato shit!
Chris Derrig built me a LP Standard in 1981 in Atlanta, where he was based out of, not LA. The guitar was stolen along with an original rosewood neck '59 Fender Strat at a bar called 'China Beach' that same year around Thanksgiving. I got the Strat back, unbelievably, right before Christmas. The thief took it to a pawn shop where I had left the serial no. and description.
I actually had to buy the guitar for $150, but didn't complain...I cried, happily, on the way home...best X-mas gift ever!
The Derrig LP copy never surfaced; it's out there somewhere.
I commissioned Chris to build the guitar for $500...a beautiful cherry sunburst that has probably aged wonderfully....guard your guitars with your life....Peter V.
I would Honestly torture someone to death if they stole My Guitars, I Feel for You Bro.
It is My only Fear
If someone stole any of my "BABIES", I would cut their balls off and shove them in their mouth. My wife and son both know, if there is ever a fire in my house we all need to grab a few guitars each, those are the most important items in my home.
I feel for your loss Peter.
Thanks, Paul....
I bought a Kris Derrig Les Paul Standard from Jack Spence at Famous Bargain Music in the late 80's. It was the one that got Tut Campbell in trouble a couple of times when he tried to pass it off as a real one. He walked in with it, sold it to Jack, I walked in and bought it, all in a time frame of 30 minutes. I kept it for a few years and then Jack talked me into selling it to a Dr. from Savannah Georgia, much to my chagrin. I paid 500.00 for it and sold it for 5000.00 at a time when Standards were bringing 3500.00. I walked out with my cash like I was the man. Little did I know I had sold a one of very few actual legendary Kris Derrig guitars. It's haunted me since that day.
What a Historic instrument. It's like looking into the mind of a genius. Seymour Duncan stock just "Rose" again!
dickfagsandmotherfuc SHHHHHHHH!
Its got to be a wonderful moment to know that your company made those pickups that made all that music. To hold the guitar in your hands twenty or thirty years later and be asked to 'make it righteous again' must be extra special. I hope I experience that level of satisfaction before I croak ..
Amen brother.
That guitar is so beat up, yet soooo beautiful!
It's called character :)
2 great small details in this video for guitar geeks: the pickups pole pieces are adjusted to the radius of the fretboard (Bridge-Pickup on 1:20 , Neck-Pickup 1:44 ) and the wiring is 50's style, meaning that the cap is installed on the second lug of the volume pot instead of the first (you can see this at 3:33 ) - really nice to find some details like that while setting up my own guitars! :-D
P Haze nailed it.
Would that cap position affect tone noticeably?
@@Netcom27 It affects the way the guitar sounds as you roll off the volume mainly. It is similar to a treble bleed circuit in that it allows more treble to bleed through as the volume knob is turned down, which tradtionally tends to cut out some of the higher frequencies with modern wiring or without simple treble bleed circuits added. (Treble bleeds require another small resistor and capacitor, but I forget the exact wiring.)
I watch this this video more than I should just to see the close up of this guitar... Such a beautiful finish and I love how beat to hell it is. Hard to belive it's a fake
Anthony Coughlin - know what you mean, although a had -built replica can be closer to a real Burst. Simply by attention to detail and materials, like the right glues and finishes and a good neck joint and good light mahogany. Old school lutherie, instead of a COA.
jonas brave got pics? I'd love to see
Apparently, Slash's Appetite guitar was a very high quality replica made by Kris Derrig. It may be a fake, but don't let that distract you from the quality.
i like it because i've heard many people say they've bought replica or budget guitars, given it a custom shop level setup and changes some hardward like a nut, pickup, etc and created an excellent guitar. I'm no expert but i may have my had at dong the same.
Gibson doesnt consider it a fake it saved Gibson now they make copies of it.
I don't think there is a person I'd rather have work on my guitar more than Seymour himself.
Wow! Seymour Duncan working on Slash's Derrig! Made my day!
Considering what it's been through over the past 30 yrs or so, it's in pretty good shape. Chris Derrig (RIP) made great guitars.
I don't think he really took it on tour
@@bls8959It was on tour for 18 months before being retired for special occasions
@@Slash1066 ya that's what I said..they didn't really tour with it much
Seymour Duncan pickups are amazing
Awesome to see this. Two masters. Slash and Seymour.
If thanking guitars were a thing, I'd write a poem and a solo for this guitar. It helped produce some of the sweetest guitar solos ever.
Samuel Kip not even close
@MrStormshadow999 look who’s talking...
This is a great vid, and it also helped in setting up my slash pro alnico 2's in my les paul, poll pieces and all. thanks Seymour for the tour..
Hilarious how the guitar is barely 30 years old and Slash only used it live for 2-3 years and it's beat up way more than many 55-60 year old Les Pauls.
ใ
+Calzo Houdini Plus all the various liquids that have been on it lol.
+James Fielding still nowhere near as worn as Bernie Marsden's "The Beast" lol
+hendrixslashmay Actually I think the checking is because is it finished in Nitro :) Nitro checks like that over time when exposed to the environment (sunlight, sweat etc.).
Right, this is nitro finished. Made by Kris Derrig - who sadly died young in '87 - so he never got to see how legendary this guitar became.
It's great to see all the respect Seymour has when repairing Slash's guitar. I wish luthiers would behave like that with our guitars too..
You must have a bad luthier then. I'm a beginner luthier, and I treat my customers guitar like fragile gold.
And I know more luthiers who do the same.
Yes, indeed I met a really a bad one. He forced me to learn basic luthier's skills, so that I don't have to meet more people like him.
Pretty sure that when I need some new pickups Seymour Duncan is going to install them for me personally.
Haha, if so, it's gonna cost you some big bucks.
I honestly don't think so. After inquiring on a guitar forum about a P-90 I have in a '55 Les Paul Junior that had (has) slowly decaying bobbins, a forum member messaged Seymour about it, and Seymour himself contacted me and gave me several suggestions on how to halt the destruction of my pickup. He also said he would be happy to rewind it with a proper period correct bobbin shouldmthe coil ever decay, and the price he quoted me was very reasonable. He's a really nice guy, and a strong proponent of vintage guitar originality.
Cornelius Crewe I agree. When my string guy at GHS recommended I call him. I thought he meant like the company. Seymour answered the damn phone !! I was blown away .... we talked for about an hr or longer. He hooked me up right. Great guy !!
That is the man, Seymour duncan, you know the guy the company is named after
That’s who I would want to do it also. He’s the best.
I have a set of these that came with a guitar I bought years ago. I took the neck pickup and swapped out the Alinco 2 mag with the Alnico 5 mag from a TB-1. I installed it in the neck position of my 26 year old Ibanez Iceman IC300. Sounds killer!
A Legend performing his crafton a Legendary instrument this is so awesome to watch.
I always wondered what it looked like up close. Pretty cool that the clear coat cracked instead of chipped. That's one tough guitar
I saw the wax tank and the shop back there and thought "what a huge shop this luthier has". Only then I read the title till the end.
Looking under the hood of this iconic instrument is amazing !
Agreed-what a legendary guitar!
Slash Sold separately!
I met Seymour once in 2005. He hosted a user group day with Evan Skopp in England for his online forum members. Im from Canada but happened to be gigging there at the same time. He treated about 30 of us to dinner and booked a room in the hotel for us to jam in. He told some great stories too; both him and Evan were top notch with everyone.
I also caught them in Australia on that tour - really nice night and some great music at a pub here in Melbourne).
Also went to visit the Duncan factory in Santa Barbara on a trip in 2010 & had the pleasure of chatting to Seymour and also MJ there, who re-wound on old Hofner pickup for me. Legendary.
EvLoutonian Cool.... 🤘🏽
Imagine waking up like every single day, getting ready for work, arrive and just sit down to work on Slash real Appetite For Destruction guitar... i haven't envy so much a man before in my life than now.
Video title should say "Performing surgury on the holy grail of guitars". Like forreal that guitar has played a lot of songs we know and love today and it all first played on that guitar... When he took out the pickups I couldn't help but look at them and think wow thats the first time it's been opened up since all those concerts and gigs... That guitar is more than art, it's a piece of history. When slash dies it either A- Should be burried with the legend himself or B- be put in a museum in a see through case and never be opened up again
ToleranceGamingPro might end up in a museum or sum rich dude will buy it for millions

And then returned to Joe Perry...........

You’re welcome.👍🥃
I was going to point out the same 🤣
That guitar is a beauty. I always though that it had a very unique wear mark where the forearm rubs against the upper part of the body.
I need this guitar!!!!
the inlays look so nice!
Cool!! Can't wait until tomorrow - Slash's new album is out finally!
Man i love watchin stuff like this i own a les paul traditional and i love it gibsons rule they truly are kings of the dirt.
as to the technical differences I dont know, but I put Alnico 2 pickups in my les paul, most noticeable is the clarity and they dont feed back at high volumes, well worth the money.
i love to see seymour at work. he's 100% pro!
The guitar used on Appetite WAS a Les Paul, it was this guitar you can see in this video, an '59 replica made by Chris Derrig, Slash got this guitar for the AFD recording sessions because he didn't get the sound he wanted with his Jacksons and BC Riches, these last two was used on the demo sessions but neither of them were used on the album. Every song was done with the Derrig except My Michelle which was recorded with an SG. He played PRS maybe once, when he did a song live with Alter Bridge
happy new year Seymour from Scots Allan.
It’s hard to believe it’s a copy. Amazing.
@Kirrrt Hey guys actually in the beginning he says their is a feedback problem what it is is wax, when the pickup is dipped in it the wax dries. After being taken out of the wax it dries inside the pickup keeping the coils in the bobbins of the pickup from moving causing unwanted feedback or noise . And that is why their called a humbucker for or hum cancelling sound rather than single coil pickups usually in stratocasters
p.s. the wax is paraffin wax
My hands would be shaking as I tried to lay a finger on it.
I'd just leave it alone and look at it.
But, I'm no Seymor Duncan, so....
There that is.
Peace and happiness to everyone!
THE dream guitar right there....
TheOriginalGayman THE dream guitar would be an original Gibson Burst...
Last year on ebay I happened to see Slashs 2 amps for sale also used to make the appetite album. They were split amps, not sold as a pair. The one starting bid was $5000.
And I'm Santa Claus.
This is a very rad video
It's actually an *extremely* high-quality COPY by luthier Kris Derrig built in 1984, based off of Joe Perry's 1958/59 Les Paul that Derrig had time to study up close as well as use high quality wood (Slash's has a 1-piece Mahogany body & 1-piece Maple neck - now, forget it) as well as use actual NOS 1950-60's fretboards, pots, capacitors as well as hardware & vintage PAFs. Of course, he would have customers supply pickups and thats how the Alnico Pro IIs in the video above found their way in...
Yep! I am here again watching this video.
Must be an honor for you to touch that Legendary Les Paul.
2pcs of RN'R history: the Derrig LP and Mr. Seymour Duncan. Period.
1:55 And inside the Duncan realm there's another major component of RNR history: That letter J on the pickup label, indicating it was wound by none other than Marciela Juarez, considered by Mr. Seymour Duncan himself the greatest pickup winder he ever met. She still works at he Seymour Duncan Custom Shop, being a SD employee for almost 40 years.
@@henrygab yeah there are great interviews with her on YT, podcasts, etc. - just watched one lately, such a sweet lady!
@MatKiller1197 Hey guys actually in the beginning he says their is a feedback problem hey guys, what it is is wax when the pickup is dipped in it the wax dries. After being taken out of the wax it dries inside the pickup keeping the coils in the bobbins of the pickup from moving causing unwanted feedback or noise . it used to have a pickguard! i would never have thought that.
Oh my god! What a beautiful les paul!
Most likely, Derrig built this Les Paul from a kit that was being sold by Ibanez in the early 80's through several mail order catalogs for $195. It was essentially a stripped, pre-glued body/neck that you installed the provided binding and frets yourself, and finished yourself. I remember the ad read; "build your own '59". The kits were pretty much gone by about '84-'85 either because of pressure from Gibson, but more likely because the interest was starting to take off for Jacksons, etc.
@@jujufisherofmen I'm not saying for sure, but it's a possibility. It would have made sense as building a Les Paul Standard from scratch would have been quite an undertaking.
i think so too. les paul with maple neck is a somehow strange thought. but if it's actually maple i'm stunned!
What I can read is that it's a Sprague 0.22mfd cap, with a high voltage rating. It's got the shape of a 'Paper-in-oil' capacitor, which would fit the '59 replica idea.
He should have swapped out the pickups with some stock Epiphone pickups and when no one could tell the difference he'd laugh all the way to the grave about it.
PIlotrcm I’m laughing right now at how silly that comment is LOL. A novice probably can’t tell the difference but Epi pickups sound like shit (actually so do most stock Gibson pickups). Original PAFs have a much brighter chimey tone than any modern humbucker except those that are made to replicate them. Throbak, Ox4, and Wizz make some of the absolute best PAF replicas and certainly better than SD or Dimarzio. Epi pickups are dark and sound like a bee in a jar. If you’ve played enough of them you’d know what I’m talking about.
No, epiphone guitars sound dark. Like most Duncan pickups do yet people still get a good sound with them. The pickups really aren't important
@@Dagger_323 bro I could take a Epiphone and make it sound like an original PAF....it's called a presence knob. xD

Isn't it ironic that when you buy an AFD from Gibson, you're buying a copy of a copy. I wonder if someone got famous now by playing a 'chibson', Gibson would copy that?
Are you illiterate? Could you explain your comment? Because you clearly don't understand my post.
niptodstan That dude probably just doesn't know that the original AFD guitar was a Les Paul copy built by luthier Kris Derrig...not an actual Gibson. Not many people know that history. Who better to build the replica of that guitar than Gibson though? So, if someone did become a guitar legend by playing a Chibson then FUCK YES I would definitely want Gibson to take on the task of building the replica of that guitar. I guess in a perfect world Kris Derrig could have just built a handful of replicas and sold them at a astronomical price but....come on. Really?
Gibson could have got Derrig to build them. Then they'd be official 'real' AFD Les Paul's. I bet they'd get $30k for them.
Even though it was made from a legit luthier, it's still a copy from a copy.
*****
Really? Dude, that's a bit uncalled for. He had a valid point.
I would love to play that guitar
he actually owned 2 replica les paul's for the recording of AFD, mainly because of the cost but even if that is the supposed replica its got a kick ass sound- obviously he isn't allowed to say anything because of the endorsements he has :) but you're right most people will presume its a genuine Gibson because he does own a collection now as a successful artist
sad gibson copied a guitar thats a copy of theirs
That's Henry J. for you. Asswipe extrordinaire.
Lmao
Sadder still that the forgery was superior to the real McCoy.
@@TheRealCaptainFreedom Not superior. Cheaper. If Slash's manager could have afforded a true '59 Les Paul when Slash recorded AFD, he sure as shit wouldn't have requested a $1k knock off.
GTFO with that bullshit. Just because someone does incredible work on a guitar doesn't mean that guitar is better. It simply means another guitar was used. But you better bet your ass that Slash would sure as shit used Jimmy's #1 if Page had offered it up. Slash played what he had access to and his sound is a testament to Slash. Not the guitar.
I put the Slash set in a 1999 Les Paul 1960 classic honey burst and they sound incredible, it's the guitar I use to play classic rock with, usually tuned down a hay step. I can get the early GnR, Zepp, Bad Co, sounds perfectly. Great pickups but a bit over priced.
Water? LOL Pretty cool vid. Nice worn in guitar. Saul is the man!
Ive heard that story too. Its just a musical instrument and there's so much hype. Piece of wood. I have a nice 92' classic. Gotta love a great Les Paul no matter what the story is. Well never really know....

So is this slashs Chris derrig guitar or is it on of the 2 1987 lp's that he bought when he went out on the road ? Its hard to see photos of the head stock in most images and vids. Especially since alot of imaging is posted by gibson for advertising their signature models. Ive never seen a photo from the back of the headstock for sure.
Looks like Seymour borrowed Maria's desk to film on, lol. The calculator that's in-frame around 4:02 is labeled "MJ".
i use the"59" series in my Gibson Les Paul Std. much smoother and cleaner than the stockers, in my Strat i use the "lil 59's" awesome tone...thanks SD...
What kind of solder do you use? I hope to meet you someday - I play guitar, recently bought a pair of Pearly Gates for my Les Paul Standard, and I live in Goleta!
@wipers86 and as I said earlier,I prefer REPLICAS,you can select everything,woods,electronics,LOGO,maple top,etc
Slash may very well have a Les Paul from Joe Perry (lord knows he has a metric ton of old-school guitars owned by famous players) but the guitar in the video above was given to Slash by G'n'R's manager who purchased it for him from Kris Derry after his B.C. Rich Mockingbird (stolen on the AFD tour, but had a repro made that you can see in the "You Could Be Mine" video) wasn't cutting it in the studio while recording "AFD" Google "Slash" & "Kris Derring" and you'll see my info is backed-up...
I knew Chris Derrig, been to his shop in Atlanta....
Yes
I've never had a pickup with feedback problems I couldn't cure by just tightening the base plate screws, making sure the pickup route is not against the pickup and making sure the cover is down tight and if not applying pressure and re-melt the solder. I agree with the vast majority that wax potting makes them sound less organic and responsive.
Wise words for a fine craftsman himself. Love your work, Buzz!

No problem. I think it's an interesting topic for GnR fans that may not know about the Derrigs. Most people believe Slash always played the Les Paul. Maybe someone will read our posts and learn something new.
Are those orange drop capacitors at the 3:33?
This is the Les Paul replica by Kris Derrig.
Slash recorded appetite for destruction with this guitar
to my knowledge he owns two. The Derrig and Max. I think he got the Max while he was in or at the end of the recording of AFD. He only recorded with the Derrig on AFD. But yeah both guitars are top notch and they as good as real 59 ( i think Derrig used the real 59 parts.)
