Nice test, thanks! Burstbuckers have one edge over to Duncan's that, those are with unbalanced coils which means more paf type sound and some nice single coilish type sound too.

Great demo and beautiful playing! I looove the Burstbuckers. I had a Custom Shop Reissue Gold Top from around 2010 and it didn't sound that good. I also had the 2004 Custom Shop Slash signature LP with the Fishman bridge. Best guitar I've ever played, period. I think your Bustbuckers are great, but the Slash pickups are just better enough to keep installed in that beautiful Gold Top. Thanks for the video, from 2 years ago lol.

I put these in my Gibson les Paul standard. Used them for about a few months and swapped them back to the original pick ups. Thought the stock ones felt more heavier not as high pitch treble. Stock had more bass to the sound. So now I have these slash pick ups sitting around. Might try putting them on in my hollow Gibson but it’s a pain to attempt on my own. So been watching reviews trying to convince myself if I should try them out again

Just had my tech install these pups in my LP standard, 1st time ive ever swapped pups. 2 things i noticed that im not sure are normal? I was told it was but not sure if my tech was being 100% honest lol.
    1) when we plugged the pups in the multimeter they read 9.30 on the bridge & 8.80 on the neck (before they were installed , he connected them each to the multimeter to make sure they worked). After they were fully installed and in guitar, each pup read a little weaker on the multimeter, tech said it was cuz the 500k pots use/take some of that energy or something, which is normal for the pups to drop a little on the meter after installing, nature of the beast? Jw how true? It looked like he peeled back about 3/4 inch of the braided pup wire before soldering the wire to what looked to be top/side edge of the circle/metal pot.
    2) i noticed after everything installed, it seemed like my volume knob was versitile? Seemed like volume at 7 was much quieter then i remember it being before the pickup swap..cant tell if i just thought 10-7 was less draststic of a volume drop off when it had the stock pups or if its possible the tech poorly installed them and thats why i think the volume knob had more of an even sweep? He said the pickup installation would have nothing to do with the volume knob sweep..so maybe the knob is reacting different to the new SD slash 2.0’s vs my stock 61’ burstbuckers? Or maybe i just thought the volume knob had a more even sweep? Any help or input on the feedback after getting them put in would really help! Im clearly new to the tech part so not sure if my tech did a fine job or if i should have someone else take a look

Depends on the guitar. I had a guitar with burstbuckers 1 and 2 and the guitar was very Nasal congested and compressed and I put the slash Pickups in and and it saved the guitar . They opened the guitar up and cleared away the nasal congestion . Some guitars will sound better with burstbuckers otherwise with the slash . A darker guitar will sound better with the burstbickers and a brighter one will sound better with the flash. A guitar with alot of mids will sound better with burstbickers as well. The slash are low mid heavy so in a darker guitar they could get muddy. The same set of pickups can sound vastly different in different guitars I swapped a set of whole lotta humbuckers from one les paul to another and it was like night and day . They sounded amazing in one les Paul and sounded like dog shit in the other

Good ears, I've owned both pups also. The Slash pups are very warm, tapered, low highs, fuzzy gain, warm tones. Burstbuckers better clarity, nicer highs, and clearer crunch at all gain levels - tone cuts through better.

Got some slash APH2s in my epiphone Les Paul. Something I didn’t realize is that my guitar actually had a pair of PAFs as the pickups (I was not aware!) the tone for the slash help with some distorted tones and the sustain is awesome but there are times I feel the PAFs offers more versatility and range. Can’t decide if I should switch them out again….

Hi, Marcos!! Thanks so much for sharing this great comparative video. I also have a Les Paul Standard 50s, and I use it with my Marshall JCM 800. I’m very interested in making this swap because I’m a big fan of Slash. What was the most difference you noticed between both pickups; in the video, they sound similar at least for my ears. I really would like to buy those pickups, but they’re quite expensive here, so I was thinking if it’s worth enough to make the change.
    Greetings, buddy! ✌️🎸

I have the same exact Gibson goldtop 50s model. I was thinking of making the swap, but the difference is so slight that it can be captured with the EQ. I want to keep my Les Paul in PAF territory, so I'm not gonna go hotter. Plus, I have other guitars with hot pups. As for now the Burstbuckers are staying. They soumd great.

The Duncan/Slash pup is as PAF as pups come. The outputs are 8 or less in the bridge. There are so many good knockoffs of his pups it’s crazy. I have a set of iron gear teSLASHarks and they are great l alnico 2 pups aren’t for this kind of shredding to prove his pecker is big.

  • @angusorvid8840

As much as I love the Slash set I'd keep the Burstbuckers because you got lucky with those. I've had a lot of bad luck with Gibson pickups. I had one explorer with great pickups. The only issue was that they were noisy, and I planned on getting them wax potted because the tone was otherwise great. These days Gibson wax pots their pickups, except maybe in some ultra cork sniffy "vintage" models. It's nice to know you can toss in a pair of Duncans if you have crap stock pups in a Gibson or anything else, but I prefer it when stock pups are good to go. One thing I'll say about the Slash set is they don't have the low end of the Burstbuckers. The Slash pups have a lot of clarity on the low end, but not the low end. A JB or Custom SH-5 would also work fine.

They're really close, which makes sense, both are fairly low output humbuckers, same magnet type, both PAF style humbuckers. The Burstbuckers sound like they are slightly higher output, that's about it. I bet you could get the Burstbuckers to sound identical to the SD pickups by lowering the volume slightly to maybe 9 and rolling back the tone to 8 or 9.
Doesn't seem like an upgrade to me, just a side-grade, other than from a looks perspective. I wonder what color bobbins are under your Burstbucker's shield covers.

If you want the classic slash sound get the APH1 and if you like his more modern tone get the APH2 . The APH2 is hotter and beefier and has more bite . The originals are warmer and rounder you will get more growl from the signature models and the low end is tighter but most importantly listen to the guitar you want to put tthem see what it lacks or what you want to change..

@@adamwatson6916 Not entirely true, at least according to SD. They generally recommend APH I in older Les Pauls with more weight (no weight relief, chambering etc), and APH II in modern LPs with weight relief. The story of the pickups is that Slash still records albums with his Derrig, which is a heavy guitar and the APH Is sound huge in it. They sound thinner in lighter guitars, and basically the signature set are designed to capture that same sound.

    Great comparison video!
For such expensive guitars Gibson really skimps out on most of their pickups that come stock.
10 years ago I was lucky enough to score a used lefty 1988 Heritage Cherry Gibson Les Paul Standard for $1100 in great condition. Any time I was in a shop and would play newer Les Pauls they felt much cheaper and also more light weight. When I took the pickups apart, the bridge was a stock Bill Lawrence HBL Original circuit board humbucker , but to my surprise the neck ended up being a patent sticker PAF/T-Top. I'm definitely thinking of slapping a Slash in the bridge after watching this and many other vids as the Lawrence is getting micro phonic. It's absolutely my favorite and I pair it with(another lucky find at $1700 for the half stack) my Splawn modded 3 gear Marshall 1959SLP Plexi reissue with KT-88s and Mojotone cab loaded with GT75s and Vintage 30s. The tone is absolutely KILLER.

Not really. They sound similar on cleans, but there's a very big difference on the drive - the burstbuckers have a lot of top end and sound nasally, almost unpleasant to listen to on the individual notes. The Slash set tone that down

I'd be on board if Seymour Duncan can make Slash pro pickups with alnico V magnet 🧲 🎸
