When GNR was new on the scene I liked their music but didn't like their image especially Slash. I remember a few pictures of Slash holding Jack Daniels bottles like he's drinking shots right out of the bottle. I said to myself what a waste, some long hair trying to look bad with a bottle. Then I heard him in a radio interview many years later and he came across as a genuine and well spoken person. It continues today. Of course I don't know him personally but he seems to be a good guy. For me joe perry is my hero on guitar. He's the one that made me want to play, even though I'm a metal head. But when I heard Aerosmiths version of train kept a rollin that was it. I remember asking my step father at age 15 " hey did they make any other songs? He just smiled and said" oh yes!!" Finally relived I put the rap down and wanted to be a rocker from then out. ( I went the dimebag , zack wylde route but owe it all to Joe perry)
So what does that make the Woodstock Strat worth? When I was in high school in the 90's there was a poster in Guitar World of it, Paul Allen had just bought it for $352,000 USD.
If you make more than you'll ever spend, the music becomes more important than the money. If Joe Perry doesn't sound like Joe Perry, what good is that? Give credit to the giving and the humble to ask.
Around 1985 give or take a year or two, that guitar was for sale for around $12k at Vintage Guitars in Smyrna GA, around the price of a inexpensive new car back then. They had sent word to Joe that they had it, but apparently he wasn't interested, he was probably too broke to buy it back. I don't know who they sold it to, but obviously it found it's way into Slash's collection. I wanted to just touch it, but they had it locked under glass to keep idiots like me from touching it. Like an old stray dog, it's nice to hear it finally made its way back home. :)

Wow. Very cool. I had always wished that the Montrose / Moore scenario would of went down that way. Reconcilation before death end is important. Whilst no guitar was in the picture of a dear friend and I when we had a big time falling out over the course of a year and a half, we have recently made amends. What a great relief to know that I can call him up and talk until wee hours and I can be there for him. Now if only he gave me a 1959 Les Paul. About 25 years ago I had a student and dear friend walk into my lesson room, where I was teaching a student, and give me an old Les Paul. He just smiled and said to make sure I played it. Well I do to this day and in fact have had to upgrade some parts last year in order to get it just right again due to playing it! Peace, Curtis
No it isn't, it's just people are downloading really watered down pop music, half written by a computer telling what chord will work with what they just played. the creative process is missing
I like stories from rock stars like this where the crowd isn't laughing at every little thing. Almost patroninzing how easily amused the crowd is, but it was nice to see him captivate his audience.
"Cause they don't have beautiful 1959 Gibson les pauls....sigh :( It's like only collectors who don't even play guitar can be the only ones who can afford vintage ones.
Hyuzuka If a guest is boring enough to make a Conan audience silent for more than 2 minutes, then it was a bad moment and should not have been uploaded to youtube.
UserNumber OneTrillion Maybe the audience had no interest in classic Rock. I found this interview better than any other he has had since he moved to TBS. I love vintage guitars and spend most of my time listening to them being played. I also love looking them up and reading about them and knowing their history. I only watch Conan for the funny sketches, not for the the boring and uninteresting actors. Basically, people enjoy different things and as you could see, a lot don't enjoy what was in this interview, sadly.
I havent read Joe's book yet, but after reading Walk This Way twice, I bet it's awesome. Joey's was good. But wasn't expecting it to be more family like. But maybe I should read Slash's autobiography as well. He seems to be the kind of guy who would do something like this for his heroes. I think Slash bided his time to give the guitar back to Joe for his 50th birthday as Aerosmith & Joe Perry were a massive influence on him. Slash used that guitar in the November Rain video & despite Slashs' years of excess of which he kicked to the kerb, he is one of the nicest, coolest & kindest rock stars out there. Don't know if Slash has a 1959 Les Paul but I did watch an interview with him in which he said anytime he saw anyone with one is instantly cool. Long live Slash & Joe Perry & Les Paul guitars

God Bless you 👍✝️🙏😎 Slash!! You're the best and that is why you sir are awesome and loved around the world. Thanks brother, you're a class act !!!
The irony of Joe's statement about Slash's heart is that he had developed cardiomyopathy, a heart disease of enlargement of the heart, from years of heavy drinking/smoking/drugs, and was given between 6 days and six weeks to live. This was after he left Guns and was on the road with Snakepit. Miraculously, his heart healed after he left the hospital and changed his way of living (for a time). He still, as I understand it, has the built-in defibrillator in his chest.
Beautiful story! Joe Perry is a legend and one of my favorites growing up. His style and ability have been, and still are, truly inspirational to so many guitar players of all skill levels. Then comes Slash, who has become inspirational for more than just his guitar skills. His kindness and generosity are on a level rarely seen these days.
You can hear some of Joe Perry's moves in the music Slash plays. Definitely he loved Aerosmith and he was a big fan of JP. Lovely Story. He acted as a keeper of the guitar. What goes around, comes around!
Slash did the right thing. We all stand on the shoulders of the artists who went before. Music isn't born. It evolves. Look at rock, look at Rap, ...look at Classical and how it evolved.
I was walking down Broadway in Somerville fall 1986 and along comes a nice new Trans-Am driven by Tom Hamilton, Joe Perry riding shotgun. They were yucking it up, looking like the hard times were behind them - although Broadway in Somerville was not exactly Rodeo Boulevard.

Ich bins He is a really nice guy with such a huge heart, go slash!
Magali Flores Well said! ;) Thanks for your comment!
you cried over someone giving another person a guitar??? how pathetic
You seem to be a pathetic person. That's it. If you can't see that wink with that. It's a sweet story and something different between those 'hating' everywhere.
no just didnt get why you would say it about something like this with no emotional value to anyone other than Joe Perry
Wow man, 59 Les Pul!? Those are worth about 750 000 USD!
more like 175 grand but still a lot
J TBNYC
Some of the '59 are actually worth some 750K USD, even 1Million.
J TBNYC "175 grand" Those guitars can worth close to a million USD dude!
So what does that make the Woodstock Strat worth? When I was in high school in the 90's there was a poster in Guitar World of it, Paul Allen had just bought it for $352,000 USD.
Robert Mantell
i got that poster man! lol!
This is a classic rock 'n roll story. Thanks for sharing!
Slash seems to be a great guy.
If you make more than you'll ever spend, the music becomes more important than the money. If Joe Perry doesn't sound like Joe Perry, what good is that? Give credit to the giving and the humble to ask.
Slash is a cool, awesome person. Like who the hell would hate him?
Axel?? Lol
Slash, guitar hero and gentleman.
See you on nov 19th in vegas joey...im a painter and saved since the announcement ..thank you guys so much for this. We know it is soul draining and soul feeding...im only 48 this year. You played our..(MY) emotions your entire life thank you and your "song remains the same". Your legend is secure. Relapse is part of recovery.
Hello super fan, I hope you’re fine and safe. Thanks for your comment and being a fan.
Joe. ❤
If only Kirk Hammett would give Greeny back to Greeny.
wozzlepop one can merely dream of such a thing...
that was an awesome birthday gift. slash is a real cool dude.
Slash has always been a class act. This solidifies it.
I LOOOOOOVE THIS STORY! I've watched this thing so many times. Slash is a special person.
That is a wicked Boston accent....Guitah.
One of the coolest stories in rock, ever. And although it may have been slashed a bit, pretty sure we got the whole thing. Hats off to Slash !
Gutarist are always cool and nice not like singers lol.Slash, Brian May and Joe are my favorite.
Freddie was nice and was a singer...
Agree is my favorite singer. But guitarist are in general more cool ^^
romu7999 Robert plant is nice
romu7999 im really cool to :p
Plant is a mega douche who ripped off dozens of songs and screwed Randy California's widow, widowed when Randy died saving his son from drowning, out of the significant money she is legitimately owed.
Wow. Very cool. I had always wished that the Montrose / Moore scenario would of went down that way.
Reconcilation before death end is important. Whilst no guitar was in the picture of a dear friend and I when we had a big time falling out
over the course of a year and a half, we have recently made amends.
These days creating original music's getting harder and harder, Joe Perry's so cool
ROCK AND ROLL LEGEND RIGHT HERE!!! JOE PERRY IS THE MAN haha
Slash...More than just a killer Guitar player...a true rocker is one who gives n respects others as a person first!!! Cheers n God bless always!!!
I wish I had the kind of money to just give a 750,000 guitar away. props to slash
this kind of story is always going to blow me away. Slash stop's taking call's from Joe Perry - lol that's incredible as well
Don't know how anyone can down-vote this video.
"Cause they don't have beautiful 1959 Gibson les pauls....sigh :( It's like only collectors who don't even play guitar can be the only ones who can afford vintage ones.
Boooooring
UserNumber OneTrillion but this is the internet: you can just tab out to a cat video, that's not much of a valid point
Now thats the mark of remembering where you came from. Saul , you did a very good thing, thanks for the music!!!!
So he is real..
I e never been a big GnR fan but After hearing this story I have to give respect to slash.
Hahahah Slash put his hat over the phone!!!! That's cool!
Slash is one of those beautiful men in this world, a great friend indeed.
Slash is so lovable
awe i think it’s so sweet that some all of the rockstars have their numbers
Duane Allman actually owned this 59 before he was killed. Joe's wife sold it to Eric Johnson and then Eric sold it to Slash.
Really? If that is true then that is a helluva backstory
Two of my favorite guitar players.
wow...you can really hear the boston in his voice
I havent read Joe's book yet, but after reading Walk This Way twice, I bet it's awesome. Joey's was good. But wasn't expecting it to be more family like. But maybe I should read Slash's autobiography as well. He seems to be the kind of guy who would do something like this for his heroes. I bet it both made them feel so great that words cant describe it, so jam it instead.
Slash is about as real as Santa claus
And giraffes.
Santa is real. duh. And don't diss slash dude. amazing guy, one of the most generous and inspirational people that i love to listen to and see what they do.
hahahahaha vunter slaush!
Is that a South Park reference
Vunter slaush
I think Slash bided his time to give the guitar back to Joe for his 50th birthday as Aerosmith & Joe Perry were a massive influence on him. Slash used that guitar in the November Rain video & despite Slashs' years of excess of which he kicked to the kerb, he is one of the nicest, coolest & kindest rock stars out there. Don't know if Slash has a 1959 Les Paul but I did watch an interview with him in which he said anytime he saw anyone with one is instantly cool. Long live Slash & Joe Perry & Les Paul guitars
"hey, guys. we're all poor now. can we get back together and make 400 million dollars?"
"ugh, i guess."
One of my favorite lead guitarists
Voonter Slash
That says a lot about Slashes character 👍😎 brother. He wouldn't sell it because a gift from the heart means so much for him... his is 💓 is bigger than his ego and he will be blessed for it tenfold. God Bless you 👍✝️🙏😎 Slash!! You're the best and that is why you sir are awesome and loved around the world. Thanks brother, you're a class act !!!
same Les Ppaul used in the November Rain video, wonder what it goes for?
Not the same one. Slash still has the Les Paul he recorded Appetite and the Illusion albums with.
Biggermack20 the guitar used on November rain in front of the church is Joe's guitar. Slash wrote it in his book.
Jorge Barreto easily a million
The irony of Joe's statement about Slash's heart is that he had developed cardiomyopathy, a heart disease of enlargement of the heart, from years of heavy drinking/smoking/drugs, and was given between 6 days and six weeks to live. This was after he left Guns and was on the road with Snakepit. Miraculously, his heart healed after he left the hospital and changed his way of living (for a time). He still, as I understand it, has the built-in defibrillator in his chest.
VINTER SLAUSH GIVES BACK! VINTER SLAUSH IS REAL!
how does that song go
Beautiful story!
Slash is cool on sooo many levels!
You can hear some of Joe Perry's moves in the music Slash plays. Definitely he loved Aerosmith and he was a big fan of JP. Lovely Story. He acted as a keeper of the guitar. What goes around, comes around!
His heart is so big , Idk how it fits in his chest . lol
Slash did the right thing. We all stand on the shoulders of the artists who went before. Music isn't born. It evolves. Look at rock, look at Rap, ...look at Classical and how it evolved.
KinderSlash comes every Chrismas and delivers toys for all the good boys and girls ;) Everyone hail KinderSlash!
Nice reference.
