Slash Gave Joe Perry Back His Prized Guitar | CONAN on TBS
/ teamcoco
"Slash just put his hat over the phone"
Somehow I can't stop laughing when I imagined Slash actually did that in my head.
Ya..... where's that ringing coming from.....lol
yes lmao I totally saw it too
Was a great joke, Conan is legendary.
Lmfao
NOT FUNNY!
Moral of the Story:
Slash is awesome.
Slash is awesome because he made one of his heroes beg????????
Any idea what a 1959 LP is worth and how rare a good one is? Slash just wanted a little more time with his most beloved guitar, nothing more. It's practically like giving your child away.
TimMer1981 it can go for like 400k
TimMer1981 slash has a COLLECTION of 59's. One of the biggest out there. Hook up a rock legend with his legendary axe. Stop holdin out.
I love these holier than thou types who act like they world give it back just like that of they owned one of their idols guitars
Joe really downplays the fact that Slash is a fan of Aerosmith. He says in his book, he started playing guitar because of them, so Id say hes a bit more than a fan
Spedly He is a Aerosmith fan true but his go too band is the stones
yeah, but who isn't a fan of 70's Aerosmith....... easily one of the top bands of the decade......
I think it was also important to Slash. Watch his version. He was obsessed with that guitar to the point he remembered every scratch on it from an image ruclips.net/video/9FTr6eBiU84/видео.html
He would sound stupid if he said something like that
Brett Townsend no its not. He has said many times Aerosmith were his fav band and reason he plays guitar. He has said loads the stones are greatest rock n roll band but when he was younger Aerosmith is his fav. When velvet revolver was asked by classic rock magazine to do an article on their fav artists slash picked Aerosmith. He isnt a fan of late 80s forward Aerosmith though.
Good story. Note: that shit wouldn't have happened if Perry wasn't the down2earth cat that he is. It all comes back around.
Yeah he said on Stern that he believes in Karma and doing things right. Before Slash gave him his guitar back, someone stole one of Slash's prized hats, and after he gave him the guitar, Slash found his hat and got it back.
Jonathan Dean fuckin righteous man.
Mike D Yeah! Rock on! haha
Jonathan Dean hmmm coincidence... i think not, LOL
Amen brother. "Do unto others..." Cosmic.
I thought Slash was going to walk out and give it to him on Conan.
That's what I thought too. I was really disappointed that it was just Joe Perry telling the story
it seen to me that Slash was really humble, and i would do the same Slash just gave his guitar back without question! perhaps Slash did not want to show, that's something that only a Humble man can do! see Slash wait for his birthday and gave to him as gift man that was really nice!
Nirond Looking at this video again how can you be in a mega rock group during the 70's, selling 10's of millions of records and playing to sellout crowds and then broke when leaving the group in 1980, having to sell your guitar to buy Christmas presents???
If this was Ellen, then that would've happened
That would have been epic!
In 1988 I saw that guitar for sale at Dixie Guitars in Atlanta. The price was $10,000.00 and it was on hold. I asked Tut Campbell who was buying it and he said "the guitar from that new band Guns And Roses". I saw them (GNR) about a month later on the American Music Awards and Slash was playing that guitar.
thats pretty cool
It's also a bunch of lies.
nope. i saw it at dixie guitars too. in a glass case by the register with a copy of "live bootleg" opened up beside it.
You are correct Kevin.
Well.
You can buy a Reproduced Clapton "Blackie" for $20,000 here in Sweden.
The original Blackie was sold for...
$959,000..
So I guess it's not going for $ 10,000 ;)
Joe Perry is always the coolest guy in any room he's ever been in.
One of the prettiest old queens anyways.
@@wavelength3278 what u trying to say?😂😂😅
Wicked cool guy.
Except when Miles Davis walks to the room
That’s wildly subjective, I bet you’d think so too how 5 years can past so fast.
Joe Perry was a huge influence on Slash, so I'm so glad Slash decided to do this. 😃✌
See November Rain video, the guitar Slash played in front of the church is the guitar Joe Perry was talkin' about
Oh, ok Thanks, mate!
@VAcreeper2000 he swallows it man
hei i just know that guitar price is now 1 Million dollars
.
Really? That isn't Slash's own LP? In the video?
@@ExtremeWays4Bourne at the moment of video taken it was Slash guitar, Joe already asked him to buy back from him but Slash refused it
This guitar is probably worth now more than $1,000,000.00 just take into consideration the history behind it.
It is worth what a collector will pay. It isn't worth a million as an instrument. If you want one , and they are great,
you dint have to have one owned by a famous person. There is a very good possibility you can find one that sounds / plays better not owned by a celebrity and pay far less than a million .
I held the Peter Green/ Gary Moore burst in my hands and a friend played it for a few songs.
The reports I got back by a few that played it were not so good. And these were people that have played more bursts than most people.
@Ulysses432 Only if it worth a million to someone to have that specific guitar. s I said, I know someone that as had many many bursts pass through his hands and he played the Green/Moore burst which good sources say it also sold for a million some years ago. I held it but did not play it. My friend did. He was unpressed with its sound and playability. I own one and have been told many times by good players that have played many people. They tell me mine is on of the best. So you want a good one or a famous one. Here is mine being played by J D Simo.
ruclips.net/video/E-C_OuwYKng/видео.html
Walk This Way was a long way after hip hop had become mainstream. If anything, it marks a major downturn when big rap tunes started to become based on recycled hooks from almost forgotten songs.
@@uoyebut4757
He's talking about the original Aerosmith song Walk This Way, from 1975.
@@52gt ‘sounds good’ can be so personal, because Greeny sounds of of This world and the only Bursts i can compare to it are Bloomfield’s, Knopfler’s ‘58 and Kossoff’s ‘59.
Ps
Slash never particularly liked Perry’s Burst.
Call me biased, but I fucking love that Joe Perry still has his Boston accent.
He is from Boston. What other accent would he have, genius?
@@georgeorwell126 Lots of celebs are from Boston, how many of them still sound like it?
@@georgeorwell126 Not everyone from Boston has an accent. Steven Tyler is from NYC yet he doesn't have the typical New Yorker accent.
Brad Whitford is from Boston yet doesn't have a Boston accent.
1:19 - He said it right there; "one of my dealer friends."
Being the drug user he was back then, I'm sure he sold it for Christmas presents. **LMAO**
He needed some snow for Christmas
Yes, that part didn't ring true. That guitar was sold for drug money. Not Christmas presents. He was a raging heroin addict.
@@misterj9619 Except, in his case, he didn't need a guitar dealer. He had a heroin one.
Way to go Slash. What a kind jester to do for a friend.
+Ryan Adkins Yes, it's not like he dressed up and entertained Joe Perry. I do like making up stories.
+GJSJapan psycho killer run run away
jester?
Renee bone apple tea.
Wow! Calling Slash a clown is kinda fucked up! Your mean..
one of my dealer friends lol
Yea, he kinda fell off that "Christmas bread" story pretty fast lol
***** Uh huh, you keep telling yourself that...
lol
John X Where's your sense of humor, crabby? They were pointing out the double entendre of "my dealer friend" when said by an aging rocker. If you think you have some brilliant insight by pointing out the obvious ("a *guitar* dealer"), you're a bit of a simp.
*****
I'm a girl, idiot. Sorry that you're intimidated by your own lack of cleverness and intellect.
I love Joe Perry! I love Slash! And I love Conan! Awesome guys!
my hat's off to slash for returning Joe's beloved guitar...that makes him a bona fied class act in my book...
A similar thing happened to me. I sold my first guitar to a college friend and 20 years later really wished I hadn't. We got in touch and he just gave it back to me. It isn't just a thing. It's loaded with the memories of the hours I spent on it as a teenager. So I totally get it, Joe.
Happy you got it back
What kind of guitar was it?
@@ledflaplin2001 It was a Japanese Strat, a Westminster. Still my #1 Strat even over my reall ones.
@@mccloysong Japanese Strat is the best!
These kind of stories make my day. Can you recommend the new MIJ Strats? Or the new American Performer series?
call me a loser all you want but i cried in joy hearing this story
+Jermie “Chand” Sheonarain ok,looser
wayne smith thank you :)
just kidding of course, had to give you your request!!!
+Jermie “Chand” Sheonarain no way..what a story...Slash is an greta guy.
+wayne smith Learn how to spell before you call someone a "Looser"
When GNR was new on the scene I liked their music but didn't like their image especially Slash. I remember a few pictures of Slash holding Jack Daniels bottles like he's drinking shots right out of the bottle. I said to myself what a waste, some long hair trying to look bad with a bottle. Then I heard him in a radio interview many years later and he came across as a genuine and well spoken person. It continues today. Of course I don't know him personally but he seems to be a good guy. Just goes to show you that you can't always judge a person by just looking at a few pictures of their show business image.
You shouldn't judge people on drug usage or alcohol drinking anyway. Chances are they're a better person than you. In fact Stevie Ray Vaughan was on many substances before he got clean and he was still the same genuine respectful Texan with or without drugs. One of the nicest people to have ever walked this planet. It's not "you can't always judge a person" it should be "you should never judge a person". Just think about it, do some self reflection and stop judging people because their lifestyle isn't exactly the same as yours.
That was no show business image.
True, he overdosed multiple times, and at his worst drank a half gallon of vodka per day. In 2001, it caught up to him and he very nearly died from a weakened heart. The doc gave him weeks to live, and he just said, "no, I've got a tour to finish" and went right into physical therapy.
Chris A you say you shouldn't judge someone right off like that, but you just told the other commenter wasn't a good person and you don't even know them. SMH.
DnB Soldier yeah. Saves water. No shot glass to wash lol.
“We’ve gotta get Slash some medical attention.” Ain’t the first time that’s been said.
I’ve met Slash and Duff on many occasions. They are both super cool down to earth dudes. Very nice and generous guys, both of them. Never pretentious. Always kind and authentic. Not surprised by Joe’s story at all.
This touched my heart. What a good guy.😊👌🎸
+Rudy Arroyo-GarciaThis touched my heart. What a good guy. And his bank account. Too cool for that to happen Gives hope to the human race. Hey Slash I think you have my 1961 Les Paul Standard can I buy it back from you?
Huh...I think I have some new found respect for Mr. Slash. That's an awesome thing to do.
0
There's a video of Slash paying deep respect to Rory Gallagher. He knew to pay homage to guitar talent who influenced him
Slash, you just found another fan bro! (I was all along but this iced it) Class act Slash. Joe Perry ain't a slouch either.
"hey, guys. we're all poor now. can we get back together and make 400 million dollars?"
"ugh, i guess."
Years ago, my girlfriend at the time worked artist relations for Warner Brothers and she had Joe Perry's phone number written on a note on the kitchen table. So of course I called it. Somebody picks up....and a guy with thick Boston accent says......
"Check's in the mail" and they hung up. I'll never forget that.
Did you eventually get a cheque?
R
Yup, time to dump the girl..
Wow man, 59 Les Pul!? Those are worth about 750 000 USD!
more like 175 grand but still a lot
J TBNYC
Some of the '59 are actually worth some 750K USD, even 1Million.
J TBNYC "175 grand" Those guitars can worth close to a million USD dude!
So what does that make the Woodstock Strat worth? When I was in high school in the 90's there was a poster in Guitar World of it, Paul Allen had just bought it for $352,000 USD.
Robert Mantell
i got that poster man! lol!
Slash has always been generous and humble and so is Perry. Its all about love, respect and music.
If only Kirk Hammett would give Greeny back to Greeny.
wozzlepop one can merely dream of such a thing...
So awesome to hear stories like this between monster superstars.
They are just men.
Who is cutting onions in here? Stop it!
Ich bins He is a really nice guy with such a huge heart, go slash!
Magali Flores Well said! ;) Thanks for your comment!
you cried over someone giving another person a guitar??? how pathetic
You seem to be a pathetic person. That's it. If you can't see that wink with that. It's a sweet story and something different between those 'hating' everywhere.
no just didnt get why you would say it about something like this with no emotional value to anyone other than Joe Perry
My uncle is friends with Joe. He really is the nicest rockstar
Seriously? Your uncle knows him. Is he as cool in person as he seems?
@@mrsx7944 my uncle is Dean Winters he is an actor and he's really cool. He told me that Joe opened up a guitar case backstage and there were 12 guns in it😎

Touching story, I've been a fan to both groups, and that guitar has been in very good hands.
that's a nice story. gnr in their prime were untouchable.
Appetite was (and still is) in a league of its own. Pure Gunners.
Damn. That had to have been hard hard for Slash. As a fan you want memorabilia but, that legend is still alive and well. I hope Joe has it in his will to give it back should he leave us before Slash.
BTW 2 of the chillest guitar heroes !!
fucked up dude, but conan is the best, so is the dude
Slash is the king of the guitar and giving that guitar should of made him feel really good to see it being played by its original owner
That made me tear up a little bit.
and Joe probably sold that guitar for 200 $$$, considering he was strung out and almost broke at the time.
Leave it to Conan to ruin something beautiful being said about someone.
Kind'a thought the same. But it's Conan, what are you gonna do?
lol i love it when he does that:)
He didn't ruin it. I mean I thought it was a nice story. What do you want, 20 seconds of silence and violin music?
OrphanSeasun No, it was just a really weak and juvenile joke, it wasn't worth ruining the moment for. Conan could've just reiterated something like "Yeah he's one of the most genuine guys out there." etc.
Syclone0044 Well either you're a genius of human behaviour and most of us are just wrong or you need to grow up and shift perspective. And by the way, there's nothing equivocal or interpretational about humour "working" for me and others. It works for me [period] - there was nothing "juvenile" about a wonderfully evocative play of words on the size of his heart AND at that point the story was over...so the moment you say he ruined was past. The point at which he *could* have ruined it? Guess what - he called Slash one of the nicest guys around. You're wrong on many levels here I'm finding.
I read his book, he is a bonafide family and all around good guy...who else can withstand the singer of the group with all due respect..
+2000Betelgeuse There's two kinds of people in this world- Joe people, and Steven people.
+LetThereBeLoud. Joe most certainly doesn't paint a good picture of Tyler in his book. And that was before the nitwit decided to record a country album!
I wish I had the kind of money to just give a 750,000 guitar away. props to slash
His heart is so big , Idk how it fits in his chest . lol
Gutarist are always cool and nice not like singers lol.Slash, Brian May and Joe are my favorite.
Freddie was nice and was a singer...

romu7999 Robert plant is nice
romu7999 im really cool to :p
Plant is a mega douche who ripped off dozens of songs and screwed Randy California's widow, widowed when Randy died saving his son from drowning, out of the significant money she is legitimately owed.
Slash is a great guy and a amazing guitar player
My Dad saw this exchange happen. He was a chef at Aerosmiths restaurant Mount Blue back in the day, where they had Joes 50th. He always talked about having to carry a guitar sized cake walking backwards out to Joe. Didn't know the guitar story until recently.
Much respect to Slash for doing that
I fucking love SLASH. Tears of joy after watching this
I have been a driver for actors and musicians since 1992 and Slash is the coolest guy on the planet, as far as I'm concerned. Driven him on three different concerts. Sound.
Hahahah Slash put his hat over the phone!!!! That's cool!
Joe Perry is my #1 favorite lead guitarist. always has and always will.
Slash seems to be a great guy.
Duane Allman actually owned this 59 before he was killed. Joe's wife sold it to Eric Johnson and then Eric sold it to Slash.
Really? If that is true then that is a helluva backstory
Slash is known as one of the kinder rock n roll celebs. I've heard
other Slash stories where he's just being a good guy, especially to
fans. Slash.
ROCK AND ROLL LEGEND RIGHT HERE!!! JOE PERRY IS THE MAN haha
Slash is a cool, awesome person. Like who the hell would hate him?
Axel?? Lol
That is a wicked Boston accent....Guitah.
I met Slash a while ago, when he (we) were not drunk or high. He's one articulate and nice guy. The fact he spoke so eloquently really surprised me. Never judge the book...
Slash is about as real as Santa claus

Santa is real. duh. And don't diss slash dude. amazing guy, one of the most generous and inspirational people that i love to listen to and see what they do.
hahahahaha vunter slaush!

same Les Ppaul used in the November Rain video, wonder what it goes for?
Not the same one. Slash still has the Les Paul he recorded Appetite and the Illusion albums with.
Biggermack20 the guitar used on November rain in front of the church is Joe's guitar. Slash wrote it in his book.
Jorge Barreto easily a million
It pains me to see so many rich artists with zero talent these days
I would rather starve than sell a 59 les paul
AFCofNYC a les paul is best enjoyed while alive, though... ;)
Pathetic.
Slash's guitars were custom made....not from the Gibson factory.
They weren't quite as mysterious and mythical back then. They were just really good old guitars in those days.
AFCofNYC unless you haven't had a hit of the yam in 24 hrs
VINTER SLAUSH GIVES BACK! VINTER SLAUSH IS REAL!
how does that song go
These days creating original music's getting harder and harder, Joe Perry's so cool
No it isn't, it's just people are downloading really watered down pop music, half written by a computer telling what chord will work with what they just played.
the creative process is missing
You could buy a nice house for what some 59s are are fetching. Damn! Slash is one cool cat.
So he is real..
Don't know how anyone can down-vote this video.
"Cause they don't have beautiful 1959 Gibson les pauls....sigh :( It's like only collectors who don't even play guitar can be the only ones who can afford vintage ones.
Boooooring
UserNumber OneTrillion but this is the internet: you can just tab out to a cat video, that's not much of a valid point
Hyuzuka If a guest is boring enough to make a Conan audience silent for more than 2 minutes, then it was a bad moment and should not have been uploaded to youtube.
UserNumber OneTrillion Maybe the audience had no interest in classic Rock. I found this interview better than any other he has had since he moved to TBS. I love vintage guitars and spend most of my time listening to them being played. I also love looking them up and reading about them and knowing their history. I only watch Conan for the funny sketches, not for the the boring and uninteresting actors. Basically, people enjoy different things and as you could see, a lot don't enjoy what was in this interview, sadly.
It's a hard cold fact that musicians get attached to their instruments.....letting go of any of your "children" is a heart wrenching event to go through....wouldn't wish it on anybody.....Slash is now on the top rung of my ladder of favorite musicians.
I'm sure slash has a few of them
It was his only at the time, I believe. And when he wanted another, he had to pay quite a bit, because nobody really wanted to sell theirs at the time.
***** I can't remember where, I wish I did, but Slash talked about that exact guitar one time. He mentioned how not only was it Joe's, but it was a famous '59 that had been notably played by many rock legends. Truly a piece of art and history as a whole, and absolutely a limb for the guys who played it. I completely get what you mean. Rock on.
talking about hearts in his chest right
Why would you assume he owns a few?
Not likely, man. 1959 Les Pauls are rare, to the point that they are nicknamed "The Holy Grail of Guitars." There's not many around and even one that's not in the best shape will cost around 100K. Sure, there's a lot of musicians who have the money to own several, but the thing is that people who own these, like Slash in Joe Perry's story, usually don't want to sell them.
meth, not even once...
It brought tears to my eyes to watch this story. I had fallen on hard times and sold my 58 LPC triple pickup. The next time I see it, it's on the cover of a vintage guitar magazine. The good news is, my life & financial situation turned around. I'm 70, my last hit was in 2009 and my fingers work better than ever. I have a lot to be grateful for.
Good luck for your future come sir
I am glad to hear that! Good luck ✌🏻

Just say you sold it for drugs Joe we won't hold it against you...
In a round about way he did say that. He said he sold it to a 'dealer" friend as in a drug dealer. So don't hold it against him.

Had the great fortune of seeing them both in concert. Good times.
Slash handed Joe $250,000 by doing that. Now, I don't know about you, but in my book, that is as generous as you can get. A heart of gold doesn't do it justice. A heart of platinum is more like it. An awesome story.
Its not the monetary attachment he had with this guitar, it was the sound, tone, and it being 1 of less than 1000 left known...yea Slash is quite a helluva nice dude! Class Act!
Joe did offer Slash basically any amount of $$$. Joe would have given him $500,000 easily. Money was a non-issue. But either way, Slash could never take money

Slash did the right thing. We all stand on the shoulders of the artists who went before. Music isn't born. It evolves. Look at rock, look at Rap, ...look at Classical and how it evolved.
Yeah, so next time somebody says "Rock stars are just regular people" try to think about the last time to bought and GAVE AWAY a million dollar guitar!!
Except he didn't pay that for it. Elsewhere in the comments someone talks about seeing it in a music store for $10K, on hold for "the guy in that new band GnR." The point being, Slash gave it to him for is 50th birthday, after saying he wouldn't sell it back to him. THAT is the class act part of the story.
He sound exactly like Paul McCartney with american accent
I love Joe and Slash. Love that they are friends!
Slash's heart is so big he needs a pacemaker to keep it pumping.
Slash, guitar hero and gentleman.
I e never been a big GnR fan but After hearing this story I have to give respect to slash.
man Slash is such a cool guy for doing that I really respect that and he is also an incredible talent
At the time Slash gave that guitar back to Joe Perry (obviously for free, as a gift) would have easily sold at 💰auction for a minimum of one million dollars. If "actions speak louder than words," Slash just "giving" that guitar back to Joe Perry, or really back to anyone a guitar of that historical, musical, and monetary value says way more than what could ever fit in the comments section of this You Tube video.💯🤝

Well, this is rock'n'roll. I think that Slash really knows what it means to a guitarist to sell his special guitar. This special guitar that makes it so easy and naturally to play. What a gesture from excellent guitarist to th other!
Slash has always been a class act. This solidifies it.
A rich person giving another rich person a gift only rich people can afford. What a heartwarming story!
Way to go Slash class act🎸🎵👍
The irony of Joe's statement about Slash's heart is that he had developed cardiomyopathy, a heart disease of enlargement of the heart, from years of heavy drinking/smoking/drugs, and was given between 6 days and six weeks to live. This was after he left Guns and was on the road with Snakepit. Miraculously, his heart healed after he left the hospital and changed his way of living (for a time). He still, as I understand it, has the built-in defibrillator in his chest.
