(Clara rests her head on his shoulder.)
CLARA: Every Christmas is last Christmas.
      SANTA: Hyah!
(The sleigh flies in front of the full moon.)
      [Clara's bedroom]
(The Tardis materialises outside the house. The Doctor carries a specimen jar into her bedroom, where she is still in bed with a Dream Crab on her face.)
DOCTOR: Oh, Clara. I might have known that you would be the one to sleep in. Okay, I tracked the psychic signal here. I'm pretty sure that I know how to do this now. One of the advantages of actually being awake. So, you just hold still. I've just got to zap the neural centres.
(He does so with his sonic screwdriver.)
      DOCTOR: Okay, there you go.
(He pulls the Crab off her face and puts it into specimen jar 16367//K8.)
DOCTOR: The Dream Crabs must have got to me first then found you in my memory. The others were collateral damage. Well, good to see you properly at last. How long has it been? Clara.
(Clara switches on her bedside lamp to reveal her grey hair and wrinkled skin.)
CLARA: Oh, you know. About sixty two years. Doctor, I have missed you very much, you stupid old man.
      (She laughs and they hug.)
      DOCTOR: I've missed you, too.
      [Clara's living room]
DOCTOR: These are Christmas hats, I've seen people use them. You put them on and absolutely anything seems funny.
CLARA: Oh, probably won't work on you.
DOCTOR: Probably not. You want to try?
      CLARA: Go on, then.
(He puts the yellow paper crown on Clara and she becomes her younger self.)
CLARA: Can you really see no difference in me?
DOCTOR: Clara Oswald, you will never look any different to me. So, how was it then?
      CLARA: How was what?
DOCTOR: The sixty two years that I missed.
CLARA: Oh, how was my life, you mean?
DOCTOR: Is there a Mister Clara?
(We see the old version again.)
CLARA: No. But there were plenty of proposals.
DOCTOR: They all turned you down though?

Still to me one of the best scenes of new who. The script, the performance, the MUSIC (THAT OPERA), the shock factor. Always remember when this first aired my jaw hit the FLOOR when Santa came in. Capaldi smashes it out the park. Throughout the whole scene you can just tell he’s hiding his sadness; through the jokes, the small talk and his HOPE that Clara will take up his offer of all of time and space. Likewise old Clara hiding the fact she is so gutted he’s missed all those years together. So, so good.

The Twelfth Doctor really changed in this episode, he was a bit mean in series 8 but this didn't feel like a total redux, more like a logical evolution of his character. Capaldi's Doctor had a proper character arc. A bit strange for a Doctor. Normally, once he's figured out who he is after a regeneration, he's basically the same until he regenerates again. He had a mini character arc in S8 and an overall character arc from S8-10. It was refreshing to see.

ehh, it only implies that it's romantic to *her* - the Doctor could see it any which way. there were certainly more romantic undertones during the 11th doctor's tenure, but it switched to something more parental with the 12th. it's possible that change wasn't reflective of Clara's psyche.

Moffat actually said once mentioned that he believes the Doctor's curse is that he loves his companions more than they love him. And that's pretty true of Moffat's Doctors - Eleven loves Amy and Twelve loves Clara. Both Amy and Clara prioritised someone else over the Doctor. They loved him, but they loved someone else more. Yet the Doctor's #1 priority has always been them. For Twelve-Clara, there were hints that the Doctor was in love with her. Eg, when Clara said "I never thought you were (my boyfriend)" and the Doctor replies "I never said it was your mistake"; the S8 finales where he broke all his rules to help her rescue the man she loves (Danny Pink); this Christmas episode where old!Clara hinted that she had loved him back; the scene in the Cloisters at Gallifrey where the audience doesn't hear their last words (iloveyou?); and, of course, the whole shitshow where he broke all his values, rules, and betrayed his own people to save her.
It might also be worth mentioning that Moffat had always placed a great deal of symbolic emphasis on the Doctor having two hearts (hence, he "loves" twice as hard?). Personally, I loved that the show flirted with the idea of a deep, non-platonic love between Twelve and Clara, but chose to exercise restraint and kept their relationship platonic. The relationship between Twelve and Clara is just magical.

Amy Pond reminded me of Sarah Jane more. Amy had that sarcastic sense of humor that made Sarah Jane so special. Clara stands out from all other companions in that she knows the Doctor intimately in a way no one else ever can or will, not even his wife. As such, they share a bond that no one else can touch.

This episode is perfect, truly the best christmas special that Doctor Who has ever produced. I think the entire point of a christmas special is to bridge the gap between 2 seasons, and focus on the festivities of the episode. I will never understand the hatred for this episode because it's truly fantastic.
RTD's episodes were all good, even great in some cases, but they never captured the spirit of Christmas. They were just like extra episodes, they could've been set at any other time of year and it would make no difference.
Moffat's Christmas specials, aside from The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe, were all truly amazing, and felt like Christmas Episodes. Even the goofier ones like Doctor Mysterio and the Snowmen are still really good. Season 6's christmas special is only bad because it has no effect on the show, the reunion with Amy and Rory is completely forgotten in Season 7.
Last Christmas has a fantastic Sci-Fi concept by itself. The Dream Crabs were perfect, and the idea that we'd never know what's real was great. I was caught out multiple times while watching the episode again because i thought they were finally awake.
And do i even need to mention the Christmas aspect of the episode? They somehow managed to incorporate Santa into the show without it seeming forced or tacky. It's the perfect resolution to Season 8's character arcs. The 12th Doctor finally starts to understand humans again, and Clara finally accepts the 12th Doctor, as well as coming to terms with Danny's death. I actually teared up twice during this episode.
I felt like Season 8 Clara was only travelling because of the 11th Doctor's promise and slowly grows apart from him because of his cold nature, but i think here is where she finally accepts that the 12th Doctor is her best friend and he really does care.
This episode is probably one of my favourites of all time.

    *The Doctors Christmas Wish.~*
All of time and all of space.
    A doctor was out-of place.
    62 years he was gone.
    Her waiting went forever on.
Then one day on a snowy night.
A blue box came, oh so bright.
The hum was drumming through the door.
For her wait was no more.
He came in sorrow, for being away.
For her it was another day.
She traveled the country, she flew away.
    Many men, what she say.
    Turned them down, every one.
He was sorry, he was done.
All the waiting, all her life.
But some red man was a happy sight.
He gave him a wish, then was the light.
Waking up with a fright, he dashed into the box.
    Hoping he was right.
He took off the beast, she jostled awake.
All was well and it was getting late.
A second chance, they dashed outside.
The doctors joy, nowhere to hide.
The hum drumming, the box out-of sight.
Merry Christmas to all and all a good night.
