Shonas list suggests she was the one whose dream was dominant. Alien, The Thing, and Miracle on 34th Street all played a big part in what the others dreamed.
I need to watch this again-don't think I've seen it again since first broadcast-but the other 3 he had are absolutely easily my 3 favourite Christmas specials of all time. With a potential exception for A Christmas Carol.
DW Christmas specials in a nutshell RTD- writes a normal episode but sets it at Christmas and adds a killer Christmas and a golden death angel or two Moffat- Goes all fairytale Chibnal- Doesn’t bother
This was supposed to be Jenna Coleman's last episode. It had been scripted and parts of it shot. But she decided to come back for one more season. And I appreciate that. It has Jack Frost, it has the cute Shonna, it has Patrick Troughton's son playing a sort-of Doctor and Dan Starkey having fun as not Strax. And it brings an appropriate end to Danny's story. It has the affection the Doctor has for Clara on full display, too. Happy Easter!
I agree whole-heartedly! I kinda wish *this* had been how Clara had left the show. It, I think, would have had more meaning and be a nice departure from the usual acrimony that we get with companion departures. It would have been ... nicely graceful. :) But even with that said, this is without a doubt the best holiday episode Doctor Who has done!
Capaldi had some of the best, but honestly for me the most 'Christmassy' will always be The Christmas Invasion. Somehow it's the most feel-good of all of them - I think because it's the only one that's the first episode of a particular Doctor.
Fun Fact: Shona (Faye Marsay) was high on the list for the next companion had Clara's story ended in the original version of this special. Jenna Coleman decided to stay for another season at the VERY last minute while doing the readthrough.
I love the idea of a fantastical character throwing fantasy logic back in your face. "Your mum and dad just randomly decided to buy you a bunch of stuff? You idiot, of COURSE it was a fat bearded weirdo with his elves and deer. Keep up?!" Like, when you look at holidays, it is very silly what a lot of us continue to practice out of tradition. Especially when Clara has traveled with the Doctor. Any story could be real and has a hidden story behind it.
For a while after this episode, I kept thinking it'd be funny if some random future episode ended with Santa showing up again, and then cut back to 20:19 with the Doctor shouting "OH COME ON!" and then rushing off to free Clara again.
"Still never stopped me!" Is incredible. Partly as I argued before this episode was made that Santa was real and his legacy survives through Mummies and Daddies each year ergo Santa still exists even if he has mythical beginnings.
With the Doctor leaving the sled while Santa is still there, it's a bit of a funny thought that the real Santa may have put on a dream crab to save both the Doctor and Clara Also it's funny how the Doctor talks about "second chances" and the fruit that appears is a tangerine/satsuma. A throwback to David's first Christmas special
My favorite Doctor, Peter Capaldi ... my favorite companion, Jenna Coleman ... perfect, together ... Jenna JUST edges out Billie Piper ... Peter JUST edges out David Tennant (mostly for the Sonic Ray-Ban's [wink]), who JUST edges out Matt Smith ... But ... then again ... nobody REALLY tops Tom Baker ... right?!?
If this HAD been her last episode, it would have been a much better send off then the timey wimey thing she actually got. Living to old age, having a life and yet still being looked in on by her doctor until her last Christmas.
I've a feeling Santa is gonna get pretty frustrated when he finds out his best friend is working for a giant slimeball controlling what is left of the human race on a satalite
I'm a Jew and i think doctor who moving from Christmas to new years was a big mistake and should be rectified immediately. kids need this type of hope no matter their background. new years doesn't hit remotely the same. The DW Christmas episode was an institution.
It was a time of post Christmas lunch family get together in front of the TV. You're right, New Year special just doesnt sit right. New year is a mostly adult celebration. A kind of poor relation to Christmas. The two part special was OK, but the grab was the Christmas day episode to make you watch the next week. New Years Day, too many people in England start thinking about work the next day and when to take the decs down. It's just not the same. And they wonder why they haven't got the viewing figures anymore? \_(●_●)_/ I hope you had a good Hanukkah.☺
I agree, man. No matter your religion, there's nothing that hits better than a feel good Christmas story. Especially one with the Doctor. I loved them as a kid and the Doctor Who Christmas specials will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Oh good old Doctor Who! Can we please go back to having a Doctor who can act? And companions that can too? And just wonderful stories? Is that too much to ask for?
“Every Christmas is last Christmas” is the phrase I’d say best defines the Capaldi Christmas specials, the series 8 Christmas special was the ending of the smith era, series 9(1st special) was this episode as well as the last Christmas with Clara, series 9(2nd special) was finishing rivers story ie rivers last Christmas, series 10(1st special) is a bit of an odd one out however it takes place right after the 2nd series 9 Christmas special and they talk about the loss of river at the end but it’s a bit out of place. And the series 10 2nd Christmas special was the end of the Capaldi era thus being Capaldi’s last Christmas.
moffat was never actually about what was happening in the episode. the situation matters very little and the characters take the front seat. the new seasons feel like each episode is entirely based around the monster of the week. which means the characters are totally uninteresting and the only interesting thing about the monster is whatever stupid thing it does.
I wonder if this santa would like the one from that tv show called the librarians. I liked how that one spread cheer on Christmas eve and i wonder if anyone could do it whilst they sleep every night to help. 😅
Getting Simon Pegg/ Ricki Gervais lovechild vibes from Santa. Funny though hes played by Nick Frost who starred opposite Simon in Shawn of the Dead. Lol

Extremely underrated episode, all ways thought Moffat Christmas specials were the best.

I think there are only one or two Moffat Christmas specials I didn’t really like. The rest are beloved classics.
The Narnia one being an exception

Honestly I bloody love this Christmas special, one of the best. And that last five minutes always makes me cry. 🥲🙂
The part where Clara tells Santa just five more minutes and he's like you really should be going all worried like always makes me cry

The perfect name, and he’s genuinely pretty fun

Jesus the difference between Moffat and chibnall writing is clear to see
