3D Printing with Transparent Resin - Keeping it Clear and adding Colour

- In this video I discuss the various options around how to process transparent resin, after the print, to ensure it stays as transparent as possible.
I then discuss the use of Resin Pigments to add colour during the printing process.
I then apply colour to the transparent pieces testing Ink vs Pigment, & also Water vs IPA (as a mixing solution).
After applying clear coat to half of the models. I then compare the outcome and pick my favourite.
Conclusion:
If you want just one colour transparent resin: Buy in that colour
If you want to create a transition of one colour to another: Buy clear resin and add resin pigments during the print
If you want to print in multiple colours: Buy clear resin, resin pigments and additional vats. Create your own!
However, if you want to create cool effects with multiple colours, the best I have found so far has been Inks mixed with IPA, applied in one step. The process is then repeated and clear coat applied at the end.
I hope this is of use to someone :)

Thank you for watching :)
Great video, appreciated the different tests you tried. I was blown away by the figure model you showed. I stayed for the Ferris Bueller ending. Nice touch.
Thanks dude. Glad someone got it 😁👍🏼
Awsome video and tests, now i know all i need to start to get my prints colored.
Thanks you very much for your work SIr.
Nice experiments! I astonished on how "simple" it is to create such beautiful effects. I have been researching on 3D printing and painting to see if I can make it as a hobby; I am glad I found your channel!
Thanks so much. Sometimes the simplest approaches are the best :)
I really like transparent resin and alcohol ink... there are so many options.
Thank you for testing it. I learnt a lot!!
You are welcome! Thank you :)
Excellent Video Ben, Thank you for Sharing.
Thanks Jerry 😊👍🏼
amazing! thanks a lot! for all the info
This is fantastic, such a good video, very detailed , will definately be using your tips for my painting. Thankyou for sharing !! Subscribed !!!!!
Thank you random person 😁
cant believe youtube hasnt shown me your channel b4. subscribed !
Thanks dude, really appreciated!
This is the kind of thing i want to do will be following your channel with great interest.
Thank you. Really appreciated!
thank you! great video!
You are welcome! Thank you :)
Very useful, very interesting. Cheer.
Thank you! Cheers!
When coating a print with alcohol ink you can use acetone to smooth the transition between colors, and you can even QUICKLY dunk the part in acetone after dying to make the dye lighter. If you shake a part around for about 10 seconds in acetone you will remove dye completely. However I've noticed that blue stains harder than red/yellow/orange.
You have to be quick with acetone on a brush however, it evaporates very quickly.
@@reforgedcriterion1471 Thank you. I really don't like using the stuff but Acetone is definitely the best option for smoothing the colours. I have found diluting with IPA and applying two thin coats has been working well and is really easy to create multiple colour blends. Lots to learn :)
Super informative video. You mention that translucent resins are pretty much the same in terms of yellowing. If you haven't yet, consider trying Epax Hard Transparent resin. Epax Hard is slower-curing than other resins, so I've found it resists yellowing more effectively than the other translucent resins I've tried.
Thanks man. I'll be sure to check it out 👍🏼
Excellent video!! Could you please post a link to your favorite materials used here? Thanks and keep up the amazing work!
Thank you! I've added some links to the description. It's for the products used.
I don't think I have a favourite yet 😁
is it better dye resin and print or dye finished print? added some ink its still very clear just with shade of blue and found it changed my exposure time
Great content, thanks.
What about to use the airbrush to put the ink in the desired position? Interesting to see.
Hi, thank you 😊
I have started using inks with the airbrush.
I find it's best to spray a little airbrush thinner through first, just to help the flow.
It provides a much more even coverage and is better to create a natural blend in colours. But I still like the random and slightly darker effect when using a brush.
I'll try to incorporate into another video soon.
Thanks again 👍🏼
Yo great video, helped me a lot! *w* One question, what could happen if I leave the print without a clear coat? Would it risk yellowing? I really love the frosted look and would like to keep that
Thank you! I believe it will 'yellow' faster without the clear coat, however if the model is not in direct sun light it should be fine for a long time. So far I haven't had any impact on the frosted effect (without clear coat) but it has only been around 6 months.
Anyone have advice for smudges and brush marks? finding them hard to avoid right now
Awesome video. I've been trying to do clear prints but have been getting air bubbles trapped inside during the printing process. Any idea how to remedy this?
Sorry for the delay. My only suggestion would be checking how the resin looks when it is poured into the vat. If I pour it slowly it reduced the bubbles in the resin. I can then blow over the top to pop the remaining bubbles. Hope this helps.
Was that ryu printed on the elegoo mars pro? He looks amazing!
Thank you.Yes the full model was printed on the Elegoo Mars Pro :)
@@benpainting2821 Very good work, great video explaining things. I've been searching how to do a marble effect on opaque white resin, your method is the best option I have found.
IPA is an acronim of what? from a spanish viewer great video
Thank you. It stands for Isopropyl Alcohol 😊👍🏼
have u try the ink with water, i mean a couple of drop of the ink in a cup of water and just dip the part
I haven't tried it. I think it would work if you are painting the transparent part in one colour, although I believe the water will create streaks, unlike IPA and Acetone 👍🏼
so can you help me out here. They all looked frosted at first, but it appears that the dying process actually made them a little clearer. Is this accurate?
Honestly I think it might be the footage. I dont believe the colour will impact the transparency. That seems to be linked to cure time, cleaners used and clear coating.
Hope that helps 😊👍🏼
I'm gonna try to use acrylics. XD
It was definitely an interesting project and something I would use again :)
