If you coat your clear 3d printed part in petroleum jelly they become really clear/translucent and i think it prevents them from yellowing

Thanks so much for this! I'm just getting into dying my resin. I'd like to try putting a few different colors in the vat without mixing them, and just let them swirl around as it prints. Hopefully I'll get some cool multicolor effects.

      How did that turn out?

    • @SamChaneyProductions

@@LeslieWorks Not all that interesting to be honest. After the first couple of layers, the motion from the build plate moving mixes everything together. You basically end up with the same thing you would have if you just mixed the colors first, except the first couple layers look off.

Thanks for the great information. I just got my resin printer setup and getting ready to do my first test. I was curious about the dye and to see if it will work, you did some great test, and the answer is yes. Good job sir.

    G'day from Australia
Thanks for sharing your experiment with dyes.
I'm thinking of buying a resin printer, but the only negative side of it was the lack of colours, until now, thanks to you.

    Love the video.
Can you do one with mica powders? Would it even work?

Does the Rit dye risk to stain the FEP screen?

I know it's been a while, but did you need to adjust any of the printer settings when dealing with the "black" resin? Longer burn times or anything? I'll be doing this shortly with some tenacious (using a Phrozen sonic mini 4k) and wanted to double check things like that first. (I do resin casting and am wondering it my So-Strong resin colorants for the Smooth-On resins would work) Thanks!

I tried this with a couple different resins and dyes... The liquid Rit dye with regular (opaque) resin separated from the resin, even though the build plate agitates it while printing. I found this odd. When I mixed powdered Rit dye with a bit of alcohol and mixed that into opaque resin, the result was much better.
both methods resulted in the resin being a bit more brittle, but in the case of the liquid fabric dye, half the items in the print failed, and the color wasn't uniform. This was mixed very thoroughly.
I think using alcohol with it helped the dye blend into the resin and what he's getting with the clear resin, is just the pigment being suspended in it.
The other issue I had, the liquid resin stained all the alcohol I used for cleaning and it would also stain anything cleaned in there afterwards. I don't like videos or "tests" like this because they aren't scientific at all, and try to present information about something based on a single print.

What about mica powder ?. Would the grains be too coarse or some other problem with it ?. UV penetration ?

@Making Cool Stuff, What did this do to the fep and the vat. Did it dye anything? Did you rinse the resin tank after every print?

  • @Emily-fm7pt

I'm pretty sure you don't have to mix clear resin bc you the reason you mix is to make sure the pigment is suspended

I don't think solid particles would be a good idea, but I don't think they could damage something either if you use really fine glitter so... I think I'll try

@@lorenzoiaccarini6966 Cool! There's always mica and pearl powder pigments as well. Glitter tends to sink to the bottom, so it might not be even in it's distrubution.. But it's still an interesting thing to try, I'd say! Let me know if you do. :D

Bruce there are several RUclips videos on using dyes after a print is finished. Alcohol inks are the way to go with coloring AFTER doing a print. You can try other dives but you may have problems with adhesion. You don't want your dye rubbing off onto anyone or anything that touches the print. Here are two for you to look at. ruclips.net/video/sQQoYY6aUic/видео.html. ruclips.net/video/6k4BivCUges/видео.html

I have doubts that anything can stain
      the FEP significantly.
It is not very absorbent. I think it’s PTFE.
