Lords of the Fallen is an unlikely reboot, but Hexworks are bringing some new ideas to the table that are very near and dear to my heart.

This death mechanic changing the world feels like a great evolution on what From was trying to achieve with demons souls world tendency, differences in the world but without the tedium
I very much agree, although as someone who learned the system ... Its pretty good in DeS
@@bevanmcnicholl2525 just tedious for a lot of players, this seems for simplistic, which I know a lot of people will prefer
Man, I know I'm never going to put the lantern down because I'm going to be paranoid about missing some secret room or something when just walking down some regular corridor.
Lol if you keep the lantern up, you open yourself up to being attacked from things from the Umbral realm poking through. Its basically a 2 way portal
@@PantsaBearThat's a cool concept man.
But then you may miss things in the living world
@@envoyofrot7046 lol missing stuff in either world will give some anxiety to some people.
Totally bro. My FOMO already feels the pain. I can picture really obscure ways to hide shit with this mechanic too.
I'm glad someone is finally drawing the Soul Reaver comparison. Underrated gem.
Bring back soul reaver!
It's cause none of these gen z ass reviewers know what soul reaver is.
@@TheNewThroneI second this, legacy of kain is missed
i mean back in the day it was well regarded. it could certainly use the love in current year tho.
@@TheNewThrone
Thirding that.
It's amazing how I end up watching pretty much every video of yours even if I don't care about a game whatsoever. It's just so great to hear you talk about stuff
Same. I listen to their reviews of stuff I have zero interest in. I just enjoy the way both of them present.
same same same
Same. I play 1 game per year at most. But I watch every video on this channel.
I disagree with Skill Up frequently (ff16 goty for me) but I always watch their videos because at the very least their opinions and thoughts are insightful
Sounds like you’re in love my boy
Have to admire their dedication in building the game like they want even after all these years.
What are you doing here 😮
I thought you only like fighting games
@@jazfrogtune I generally play action rps too lol
Especially multi player
@jeremysmith5418Right? Skillup chats the most nonsense sometimes lmao
Soul Reaver, now that's a game worthy of a real reboot.
Reboot won't be as good anyway, reimagining or alternate timeline? Maybe
One of my favorite levels in any game is from Dishonored 2, the Stillton Mansion level, where you can also freely switch between 2 versions of the same level to navigate. Cool to see more games do this!
I can only imagine the complex coding and programming it takes to create such intricacies in game/world design. It fascinates me so much thinking of that! This game was already pre-ordered without hesitation 🎮😎
@@gabrielhoward5601I think in Dishonored 2, they have every version of the map loaded and just teleport you between them. Not sure how something like Titanfall 2 or this game will do it.
Don't forget Titanfall 2!
I remember Zelda - A link to the past, where later in the game you discover how to switch over to the dark world and can then freely switch between two versions of the same whole world. It was an incredibly inventive dual world system and that was way back in the 90s.
It’s not exactly a new concept, but it is cool when games do it.
I remember at the time Yahtzee joking that there are two games in the same year with the same mechanic that's only used in a single mission...all these years a game finally builds itself around it.
The Legacy of Kain games were truly a thing of beauty. Rumor is Crystal Dynamics is working on a new installment possibly inspired as a reboot/ sequel like the 2018 God of War.
Fingers crossed cause those games were way ahead of their time in terms of storytelling, atmosphere, and voice acting.
Unfortunately in this day and age I am not too hopeful that anyone can pull off such eloquent and poetic writing that Legacy of Kain had. Also without the original voice actors :/
@@KoloXD I'm one foot in the boat with you on that. It would most certainly be a monumental challenge in the current state of game development.
@@KoloXD
I’d love more LoK...but you’ve got a point. The series biggest strength was the writing, especially how it portrayed time-travel, and I don’t know if new writers could pull that off. That and the missing voice actors.
The first legacy of kain games were amazing. Can you play it on a ps 5 as a classic game? Would love to play it again as I was obsessed with it at 14
@@KoloXD I'm just happy that the IP is not in Square Enix's hands anymore, where it was leave to rot for the last two decades (no, Nosgoth doesn't count).
The new owner already showed interest in developing something regarding the LoK series, either a remake or a ner game, so i decided to have hope in them.
i want this game to succeed and have good review scores, lets hope it delivers and lives to the hype on release day 🙏
There's definitely room for a souls-like that trades some of the emphasis on combat for exploration.
i have no clue what he means by the combat being floaty, from all the footage ive looked at it looks nearly identical to your standard souls game, which is good
@@Alolan.Vulpix.Getting.Railedyou haven’t played the game, so you can’t tell if it’s floaty or not. Also the combat definitely does look janky, there’s no doubt
i can tell what LOOKS floaty and what doesnt, never claimed to know for certainty.@@Enoo_
@@Alolan.Vulpix.Getting.RailedThe combat is very obviously a bit clunky and stilted compared to dark souls in this footage
@@Alolan.Vulpix.Getting.Railed Really? Even before this video I already was feeling the combat was looking floaty, after watching some videos of gameplay... I hope they improve it. So far, it's gonna be a "wait for a sale" from me
Any Gothic Horror setting has me immediately intrigued. I was aware of this, but it wasn't 100% on my radar until now. Great impression video as always.
You had me at Soul Reaver
That flying flaming fire Angel thing looked utterly insane.
Much diabolically beautiful imagery.
If the combat is not satisfying, a game like this fall flat on its face from the first minutes.
If that would be the only pillar, but games that stand on different pillars can get away with it if the other ones are strong enough and that definitely looks the case here.
It sounds like you weren't listening to what he was saying.
2 Lords 2 Fallen never change Ralph 😂
Soul Reaver is apart of my childhood. I would love to see even a remake.
Only a GOOD remake
I love how positive all the impressions have been! This has been one of my most anticipated games since first reveal ;)
Fr, I’m afraid this game is going to be put to the side or swept under the rug.
I want it to well, but there is stiff competition this year. I don’t want most people to past this up
@@FlipFlopGodwhat kind of mindset is this? If YOU like it, you like it, why do you care about everyone else?
Thats not how to enjoy games and media in general, enjoy yourself and let the rest of the world do them.
@@Eldenbruh because if it’s good, and it gets overshadowed and doesn’t sell well
Then they won’t make a sequel or update the game. We need more games like this
11:20 right here at this combat sequence I’ve noticed how on the end of the swing, will stagger enemies that are approaching flanks that is something I love!!
Wow, the graphics look incredible. You got my attention
I see Soul Reaver I click instantly.
A Soul Reaver video is rare nowadays.
Hard same
There are dozens of us!😁
Whoever owns the IP needs to realise they are sitting on gold.
@@BoneRazrK And as such, are we not indivisible? As long as a single one of us stands, we are legion...
Wow! The parallel realm mechanic looks amazing. Can't wait to see more!
9:00 .... how could you not mention Guacamelee's Land of the Dead portal mechanic ... the platforming puzzles in it are breathtaking (I only just discovered the game from my backlog, hahah).
Exploration and items/build variety are two of my favorite parts of Souls games, and this looks like it is nailing those pieces. Looking good, great video!
3rd parties are seemingly starting to begin understanding the souls formula and I’m into it
Wow, I REALLY like the dual world gameplay mechanic. I was planning to pass this game up but now I'm very interested.
You got me with Raziel on the thumbnail, I'm glad I watched, this game looks exciting, thank you!!!
Lords Of The Fallen: This Time It's Personal
Great video.
On the other hand if you want somehting with the same 2 worlds mecanics that you love, Dishonored 2 has one of its most amazing level called "Crack in the slab" when you have hand Clockwork that can transport you between pas and present inside a Manor at any moment, and it's really impressive and very well done, especially since it's combined with the Immersive sims elements of the game and the branching decisions that you make.
This makes me happy. A Skill-Up approval is worth it’s weight in gold imo. And I really liked the first Lords of the Fallen, so I can’t help but be excited for this one.
I still like the first LotF. Played it before DS1, but doing that didn't change my opinion. Both Surge are great. Awesome to hear this one is good.
I played the surge 2 and it’s fantastic. I wish it sold better because it’s probably the best souls like I’ve played. Maybe we’ll get a sequel one day!
Metroid Prime 2 had a really cool version of the two world mechanic to solve puzzles.
Looking forward to explore this world!
Metroid Prime 2 being one of my all time favorites....this dual world thing excites me.
Came to comments to see someone mention Prime 2. Game is amazing.
@@thechosenchickan8516 Yes it is. One of the best examples of a textbook sequel in my opinion. Can't wait for the inevitable remaster.
I hope they remaster it, it is one of my favorite games of all time.
The Dark Aether really scared me as a kid 😱
@@envoyofrot7046 Bro you're telling me. The ing creeped me out so much. Running Torvus Bog is still one of the most tense memories I have of gaming.
All rumors point that they're going to remaster. It just may not get the detailed treatment the first game got. Which I think is a big missed opportunity if it doesn't. Seeing Dark Aether with new visuals would reinforce the creepiness.
@@gogetaa11 The Dark Aether and Ings in new graphics would definitely send chills down my spine 🙀
Remarks like 'in Soulslikes the enemies are the puzzles to solve' are one of the superb quality's of Ralph's video's. Witty
I loooved the first lords of the fallen, my brother and I have a lot of raging memories from it lol. Can’t wait to make more 😂
As an LoK sycophant, these are big words SkillUp. Can't wait to watch the full video when i get off work.
When I think of split-world, dual dimension puzzle design, I think of Guacamelee 2. Play that if you haven't!
It makes me happy seeing how passionate you are about Soul Reaver
Soul Reaver + Soulsborne ; this is exactly the combination that we were looking/hoping for , awesome stuff =]
bayyyB!!!!! Aint it sweet to see skillup videos drop consecutively
Hearing that the combat isn't that great definitely makes me lean towards not picking this game up outside of a sale. But hey, maybe that changes once people get their hands on the other classes and weapons. Combat is a big thing for me in Souls-likes, very few have ever scratched that same itch that FromSoft does
Don't take Skillup's word for it, most reviewers praise the combat so far and the impact/sound issues were fixed already in a new update (you can find a video of that being showcased). Not saying Skill's wrong but I'm definitely not gonna take his word for till I see multiple reviews at release. (A guy above you had a similar concern so I just copy pasted my answer from him, sorry 😅)
Combat is arguably the most important aspect. It's the foundation. The souls channels I love got access to the preview in exchange for a "review". Be very careful of biased videos. No young channel wants to hurt their future access by saying it's bad
@@constantinesoldatosyou absolutely should take his word for it. Floaty combat is something anyone can feel so he’s perfectly capable of telling if it feels that way.
I 100% agree. I won’t be picking it up unless combat is fixed, which is too bad because it looks great.
@@KB-ql8cx The reason I'm not taking his word is because he didn't clarify if he played the ''fixed'' version or not. To me he's just another reviewer and I'd rather wait for a general consensus after release before I jump to conclusions.
Also he pointed out how combat itself isn't really special when we have examples of being able to combo between sets of weapons/stances including ranged (something also confirmed by marketing). If what we see works at release (emphasis on IF) then it pushes the boundaries of soulslike combat by quite a bit . So it makes me wonder how much time he had to really experiment since he did mention being limited to one class when other reviewers weren't. Don't jump into any conclusions just yet.
Okay the Soul Reaver-like worldshifting aspect is EXTREMELY exciting.
Looks good. I'm more into this than pinocchio game. I usually crave creepy soulslike in fall so the release date is nice.
Wish they had the Lies of P combat or just smoother and less janky animations in general. I love the dual world concept and the dark fantasy theme though
yeah lies of P looks mid
@@dodeser479Ah I see. Read your comment wrong xD
LotF combat can definetely need a little bit more polish. Animations in general are also quite weak.
@@mcbill7352 did u play the beta?
@@jei3970 no
I’m very impressed by the visuals, hopefully it sticks the landing come release day.
This is my most anticipated game this year!
Love the visual design and dark fantasy in this.
I do also find the choice weird to call this "Lords of the Fallen" instead of a new IP 🤔
This game was not in the vicinity of my radar, but with this preview, I am now interested in it. Thx for that. 👾🤓👍
Beyond excited for this game
Meh
@@cosmancho2959 😂😂
one thing i love is you create your bonfire from a corpse, which was actually a planned feature in DS3's alpha build before FROM scrapped it
A big part the loop in Lotf was long grinding routes against mobs that got trashier and easier over time because of the xp multiplier mechanic. I imagine they are continuing that philosophy as it works well with an open world that is this much larger. The challenge shifted between skill check and long attrition run, and when an area stopped providing checks you might make another quick pass for secrets and then move on.
Can't agree more on why nobody made another soul reaver alike. You'd think that upon seeing the success of soulslikes square would try to revive the IP.
If the dual-world thing makes you think of Soul Reaver, then I'm not sure he had the same take away from the Soul Reaver/LoK series that most of the rest of us did. If anything it was the story and the idea of determinism vs. fatalism with Raziel fighting to forge his own destiny while Kain tries to warn him that he already tried that and it doesn't work. So to be reminiscent of the Soul Reaver series you would need a compelling protagonist with a great villain and lots of voice acting.
Ive seen that comparison over and over every time a dual world is presented, like in the Medium or Constantine. So dont be weird
I appreciate how critical you were on this review cause they're not a very established dev Team and games are expensiveeee rn so ty brother im actually gonna pick this up 😎
Dishonored 2 had a level with the "Timepiece" where you can look at the past, and travel between the past and present instantly. Such a Masterpiece of a game. But this game takes it to a whole different level, like the classic Soul Reaver. Damn I miss those classics.
6:35: The Village from Resident Evil 4!
6:44: The cliffs on the way to the lake from Resident Evil 4!
Can’t believe we are getting 2 Resident Evil 4 remakes in 1 year, what a time to be alive!
This is very interesting because I feel that Dark Souls 1 and Elden Ring both place a big emphasis on exploration, although not puzzles.
The two worlds mechanic and that red winged angel fight were enough to sell me on this one. Since it seems FromSoft is not making a new SoulsBorne anytime soon this might be a nice bridge to fill that gap.
Love this new guy with his review!
Yeah, for a new hire he speaks very well and articulates his points clearly.
I'm glad Austin got some people to help with the work
Kain is still standing in that tower, thinking about hope. Dear elder god, give us a new Nosgoth game.
no, it's THE lords of the fallen.
Actually no, its just "Lords of the fallen" they changed the name to remove the "The"
I remember Darksiders 2, one of my personal favorite games of all time, having similar mechanics in the last 2 sections/world maps of the game. You gain a time travel gadget that opens specific portals throughout the level, everytime you need to find a way to pass a certain obstacle you would travel to the past and change the way things were, then go back to the present and the path appears cleared. God of War Ascension, despite being very flawed and short for a GoW game, did similar thing with time, aging obstacles, or changing their appearance too. I really love when games do that with their level design.
Honestly, I’m very into world design and exploration so less than perfect combat isn’t going to be a dealbreaker for me lol, I’m definitely looking forward to this
I like this consecutive uploads lol Ralph must be knee-deep in games 🤣
The original Lords of the Fallen was a good game in my opinion!! It was far from perfect, but was an enjoyable time.
This is exactly why I appreciate your previews and reviews. I have been very excited for this game due to its aesthetics, it’s right up my alley for dark fantasy. However, I’ve been skeptical about the combat from the trailers I’ve seen. You’re preview tells me where to place my expectations, and honestly I’m still excited. I hope this game is better than I’m expecting, but I believe I will still enjoy it.
Ever since his review of Deep Rock Galactic, I don't really trust his opinion about combat to align with mine. In his review of DRG he pretty much said combat was the weakest part of the game (and he only played super easy difficulty), whereas I thought combat is the most fun aspect of the game and pushing into higher difficulties just made it better.
Dishonored 2 had a level that really nailed that feeling of moving between two planes in a puzzlelike combat fashion perfectly
Clunky movement pretty much describes all souls-likes to me. I always feel like I'm fighting the game when I'm playing them more than I am the enemies.
Stop mashing the buttons then lol input is very precise in all fromsoft games. It’s literally one of the defining features of the genre.
Not sekiro
@@wulf2863 A souls like describes something not made by fromsfoftware. No one can make combat anywhere near those gods. Sekiro is obviously fromsoft
@@TinMan445He's not talking about fromsfoftware
I do wonder though why so far barely anyone outside From Software who wants to try making a Soulslike just doesn’t get it quite right with the smooth feel of their combat systems
I want The Surge 3 as well, loved those games. This looks great too.
The mighty first
i'm so sold on this game, best thing coming this year imo, and we have some amazing bangers already and soon to come
I actually really liked the first one. I am not surprised the sequel is good. I think the first is very underrated.
Very keen on this game. I think it's a win for every souls genre fan if we can have another dev making quality soulslikes. They won't match fromsoft as I don't think that's possible. And I wouldn't want them too anyway. Lords of the Fallen and Lies of P are shaping up to be the first soulslike games I actually like. Lies of P I'm more confident in because I've played it and it rocks. Fingers crossed for Lords of the Fallen, but I'm so happy to see SkillUp make a video on it since I really trust his opinion.
As soon as I've heard "two worlds" and "exploration" I was completely invested
If your looking for another game with the “Soul Reaver” type mechanic, “The Messenger” is a great game, but you unlock it at about the halfway point of the game.
The Surge was awesome, great underrated game.
Exploration is definitely why I play most games so this looks super enticing
I absolutely will be starting my first play through as a condemned just like my first play through on elden ring I started as a wretch. I like the idea of learning the game as weak as I can be instead of steamrolling through as a strong starting character
Looks great, well done on getting the word Festooned in another video Ralph 😂😂😂
Okay, thank you! I was so confused about the name when I saw it in passing.
DAMN NOW THAT'S A TITLE.
LoK: Soul Reaver is to this day one of my All-time favorite games. I recently bought a PS2 so I can play the PS1&2 games I still have. Soul Reaver was the 1st one I popped in. Still love it. If there's one game that's CRYING out for a full current-gen remake, it's Soul Reaver. Even though we lost Tony Jay (The Elder God), Michael Bell and Simon Templeman (Raziel and Kain) are still alive , so get it going already, Crystal Dynamics. The full game, with everything that was initially cut due to cost, time and hardware limitations would hold its own against anything released recently. The original is almost universally credited with raising the bar for voice acting and storytelling in games.
I can't wait for October!!! These are the kinds of games I love!!!
good job baiting me with the soul reaver thumbnail. It was effective
Bloober Team did the dual-world mechanic for The Medium. It seems these folks nailed it far better.
Glad the new guy gets a chance to make reviews too!
GuacaMelee also did the realm shift puzzle mechanic to great effect.
You got me at Souls-Like and Soul Reavers-Like
Soul Reaver? Now I am paying attention.
I've been so excited about this game, but now I'm worried bc you said you didn't care for the combat, but combat is by far the most important part of these type of games! That's worrisome! (But I actually liked the original one & beat it when it came out, so I'm sure this will be amazing!!)
If you like good combat you wouldn't like souls games to begin with lol
@wallacesousuke1433 that's ridiculous. I like challenging combat that makes you have to be cautious and approach situations with a degree of strategy, or else even lowly enemies can kill you. That's why Lies of P was kinda disappointing. It's way too easy, and you're so OP that you can wipe out everything without any trouble (I only died 5 times through the entire game!) It just wasn't challenging, Far too easy! *After watching gameplay from multiple people, this Lords of the Fallen looks Awesome! I'm so ready to get sucked into this game!
@@Mike_TNVol4Life meh, you like artificial difficulty, not well designed combat. I'll take Monster Hunter World, Nioh and Dragon's Dogma over any souls game any day of the week, I like games that test my skills, not my patience and memory.
@wallacesousuke1433 Naw besides Nioh, those games are way too easy. Never having to worry about dying isn't testing your skill. Plus Nioh is considered a souls like, just a little easier combat. But people like what they like, everyone likes different things and okay. That's why they make different games. A lot of people aren't good at souls games & make excuses for why (But trying to shit on someone bc of what they like to play is kinda petty) So you do you, and I'll do me and we'll both be okay in the long run. Bc no matter what you like, there's a plethora of games coming out to scratch that itch. We're all spoiled by an abundance of variety, and we're all lucky to be gaming at this point in time. (Edit: my bad I just noticed you said Dragons dogma too. I also liked Dragons dogma and am excited for the new one)
@@Mike_TNVol4Life Monter Honter World is too easy? LOL someone here never tried to solo Behemoth, Extreme Behemoth, Ancient Leshen, Arch Tempered Nergi and Xenojiva, AT Kulve and the endgame in Iceborne.
And then there are the classic MH games, which are even harder.
And Nioh isn't a souls-like, it's combat is almost nothing like souls games (souls combat is more similar to classic Castlevania and Monster Hunter than Nioh is to it), and no way it's easier than souls games, which you can easily outleved everything, use magic from afar, get a dozen estuses, and dodges have an insane amount of i-frames compared to Nioh and Monster Hunter.
Difficulty isn't really a good way to measure the skill ceiling of a game (there are tons of super clunky and badly designed games out there such as Silver Surfer), combat depth, combos, moves with tiny window timings, moves that require tons of correct inputs and quick thinking require more skills than any souls games.
looking forward to this!
A Crack In The Slab in Dishonored 2 did the Soul Reaver thing, but admittedly this was only in a single (badass) level…👨🍳 💋.
Lets say it together: YOU DONT HAVE TO BE INOVATIVE TO CREATE ANOTHER GAME IN A SOULSLIKE GENRE; TONS OF PEOPLE ENJOY THE VANILLA GAMEPLAY
I was already pumped but now im super pumped. Pumped x2
Floaty combat is the bane of my existence I reckon if they just added some strong rumble and crunchy sounds on impact I could
Get over it
Man, the art style, the atmosphere, the level design, the feel ... this certainly borrows HEAVILY from Souls in all departments.
Which I'm not at all mad about. The more we get of that, the better.
The dark fantasy theme combined with the dual world system definitely has me hyped as hell! Between baldurs gate 3 and starfield i will be more than happy to make time for lords of the fallen! Gamers eating good this year!
If Hexworks could get the combat feel close to FROM'S, this would be a near perfect game. The art style and setting is incredible, the lantern mechanic seems neat. Can't wait to play it and I really hope it's good.
You hit on the one thing I was worried about: floaty combat. Still, I'm very interested in this.
Love Soul Reaver as well! Named my son Raziel. I immediately knew that's what I would name my first son when I heard the name two decades ago.
This game is definetly on my list for this year, so I am looking forward to your review.
This and Lies of P are some of my anticipated souls likes atm
