Randy wrote the song as a birthday gift to his brother (who stuttered) to have a little fun. The label guy heard it and insisted it be on...with the stuttering. lol

Thanks! Yea, they taped it both ways, record company insisted on releasing the stutter version. Wrong but, funny and they knew better, obviously. Peace

That's not quite the way it happened but, close enough. They used to use the (instrumental) song a lot in the studio, especially when noodling around (i.e. warming up, setting the amps and mics, in between recordings, etc.), and yeah, Randy Bachman added the stuttering lyrics partly a joke to his brother ... who actually loved it. As I understand it, they were short 1 (hit) song for the album they were working on, the band suggested it, and after hearing it, the producer insisted they use it ... WITH the stutter.

R&R Hall of Fame is a farce.
It's a commercialized shrine to bands that were popular with the writers and editors at Rolling Stone.
If you peer behind the curtain you'll find the same group of people in both corporations.

Huge rabbit hole here guys. Randy Bachman was the lead guitarist and major songwriter in the Guess Who. Growing up in Winnipeg Randy learned from Lenny Breaux, a noted jazz/rock guitarist. BTO is known for hard rocking songs but they also have some very jazzy tunes. Blue Collar and Looking Out For #1 mainly. BTO was huge in the 70's.

My hometown boys from Winnipeg, Canada 🇨🇦
Randy Bachman the vocalist and guitarist on this song was also in The Guess Who who wrote American Woman.
He left the Guess Who and started BTO.
This song started out as a bit of a joke with the stuttering as one of Randy 's brothers stuttered. Management heard the song and thought it would be a hit and it was.
    Other BTO songs
    Blue Collar
    Not Fragile
    Taking Care of Business
    Looking out for number one

Fun fact: I remember reading an article sometime in or around the late 90's, that more people tried to pass themselves off as Randy Bachman than any other famous/semi-famous person. Many people know the name but not the face, so people were going around using his name to get free drinks, or comps/special treatment at establishments. I just remember that little fact in that article cracked me up and always stuck with me.

The lead singer Randy Bachman and his brother [the bass player] were band members. Originally the song was meant to be recorded with normal vocals. So while they were screwing around in the studio Randy decided to add the stutter to tease his brother. A record exec happen to walk by and said "That's a Hit!" So it was recorded and released that way. A joke that exploded into a hit.

The Lead Singer on this one, Randy Bachman was one of the founding members of the Guess Who (American Woman) and then split over issues of Lifestyle (Randy was a Mormon) to form Brave Belt which morphed into Bachman Turner Overdrive. Randy would later leave this band and form Union (1 Album) and then do solo stuff and reunion tours with the Guess Who & Bachman Turner Overdrive. The drummer is brother Robbie Bachman and another Brother Tim played guitar on the first 2 albums. Fred Turner is the other big guy in the video (thus Bachman-Turner)

I'm from Atlanta & this song makes me think of the old rock station 96-Rock (96.1 on the radio). Every week they would let listeners submit a 6-pack of request songs & if they picked that listener's list, they'd play it during that Friday's rush-hour. The ONLY reason I ever knew of this song is because whoever won had picked 6 songs with the theme of them all having stuttering in them. LOL. So it was this song, George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone", Elton John's "Bennie & the Jets", The Who's "My Generation", David Bowie's "Changes" & I 'think' the last 1 was The Knack's "My Sharona".

Randy Bachman played guitar in the 70's in a band called The Guess Who, along with Fred Turner on bass. When the band broke up, Randy formed a band called Bachman Turner Overdrive with Fred Turner bass, Tim Bachman guitar, and Robbie Bachman drums who had a studder in 1973. When doing a sound check, Randy wanted to make Robbie laugh, so he started playing and singing this song, making up words as he went along. When he took the album without this song, to Charlie Fach the producer, he told them they needed a bigger song so Fred said hey how about the joke song, Randy played it Charlie loved it and it was their only #1 hit.

This song and The Who's "My Generation" both use stuttering to great effect. Maybe, also, David Bowie's "Ch- Ch- Ch- Ch- Changes" but that one seems a lot more regular and consistent, where those others really sound wild and unpredictable. I'm also amazed at how perfectly this video matches the studio recording. Obviously, they filmed this as a music video and not at a real concert, but they seem like they are really playing the song and not pantomiming and lip-synching. So, if they are really playing the song, they matched the studio recording perfectly.
