"Tom Sawyer" is one of Rush's most iconic songs, released in 1981 as the opening track on their album "Moving Pictures." The song is known for its complex structure, innovative use of synthesizers, and thought-provoking lyrics.
"Tom Sawyer" received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and has remained one of Rush's most popular and enduring songs. It is often cited as a highlight of their career.
The lyrics were written by drummer Neil Peart in collaboration with Canadian lyricist Pye Dubois. They describe a modern-day rebel and free spirit, drawing loosely on the character of Tom Sawyer from Mark Twain's novels but placing him in a contemporary context.
The music was composed by Geddy Lee (bass, synthesizers, and vocals) and Alex Lifeson (guitar), with a significant input from Neil Peart (drums). The song features a distinctive synthesizer riff, a driving bass line, and intricate drum patterns. Видеоклипы
RUSH has a 40 yr plus catalog....3 of the finest musicians ever
Neil is THEE greatest percussionist ever. More than a drummer
@@GregB-uc1ky Totally agree, and then to top that HE WRITES THE LYRICS!
Heard this song on a beach when it first came out,I knew I had to buy the album
And then I saw them in min.they beamed onto stage like star trek and fucking rocked.witch hunt was azing
@@stevemeyers9291So happy for you!
I'm not the biggest RUSH fan ever but they are one of the few bands I wish I had seen live.
For sure.
Drummer Neil Peart- RIP- is considered one of the best drummers in rock history- he has a 20 minute plus live solo from Frankfurt Germany when he was older that shows his classical training in Big Band, Jazz and overall mastery
Epic
Not bad for a guys who's last job was selling farm equipment parts....
Yes, they should react to his drum solo!
It's 8 minutes. LOL Feels like 20, though.
Yes the Frankfurt solo was amazing !
I love that lyric: "He knows changes aren't permanent, but change is." ❤
Primal truth!!
Also love "His mind is not for rent, to any god or government"
One of my favorites from Neil...what a mind😮
My favorite: His mind is not for rent, by any God or government.
Should have have read other replies before I posted mine. 😅
The greatest rock drummer...RIP Neil..
Percussionist
@@GregB-uc1ky The Professor.
Neil pert was percussionist more than a drummer
Amazing lyricist as well. He wrote 90% of their songs.
@@aaroncasey9696 Peart
YYZ LIVE IN RIO will blow your minds.
Please make this reaction happen!!
so right!!!
YYZ in Rio puts this to shame musically. gotta to the react to that. Neil Peart, best drummer there has been. Others are good, but he is who they aspire to be as good as.
Yes, react to this please. You will not be disappointed.
👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🥂
RIP Neil Peart 🇨🇦
Welcome to Rush! Three master musicians from Toronto, Canada who had a 40 plus year career.
Geddy Lee Vocals, Bass and Keyboards
Alex Lifeson acoustic and electric guitar, mandola and later keyboards
Neil Peart drums, percussion and main lyrist.
Unfortunately Neil Peart passed from brain cancer in January of 2020. He is considered one of the best drummers in rock.
Song suggestions
YYZ live in Rio
The Trees official music video
Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour
Xanadu from Exit Stage Left
Cheers 🇨🇦
You forgot Geddy also played bass pedal synth as well.
You forgot La Villa Strangiato and 2112.... The entire Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres albums... absolute masterpieces!
@@ffjsb So does Alex but I did not want to make the description too long. Cheers
@@rodshoaf I agree completely all masterpieces but I started off just a few suggestions. Didn't want to overwhelm them. I could of listed a heck of a lot more. LOL
Cheers
As important as being master musicians they were incredible friends.
No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren't permanent
But change is
Every single one of Peart lyrics are poetic BARS!!!
Rush played in time signatures that shouldn't exist. They are true masters at their craft
They *are* playing live here. The video is actual footage of them recording this song in the studio.
Yeah, but we're hearing the finished, produced version, which is somewhat different from what we would have heard had we been in the corner of the room. And that's assuming the video clips are all from a single take. For all we know, the video is showing us pieces of multiple takes.
@@Cosmo-Kramer Yes, of course. We are clearly seeing them do the various tracks for the final product.... it's not being done in one take. But we *are* seeing the parts that are in the final song being recorded live.
@@billacikalin8108 You're missing the point. The whole point of someone like our host saying, "They're playing live", is that they think we're hearing the band's raw live performance. But we're not. We're hearing the *_produced_* studio version, which may've used sections of music from multiple takes to create it. Just because the video shows clips of them recording the song does NOT mean we're hearing what we would have heard had we been present in the room during the filming of said clips.
@@Cosmo-Kramer I'm not here to argue. Good day.
@@billacikalin8108 I accept your apology.
Drummer ranked best in rock history still is. Once he passed away there was no chance the band can reunite bc he's irreplaceable
Other great drummers have said they would be honored to play with Geddy and Alex if asked, but it just wouldn’t ever really be the same.
It was the same for Led Zeppelin when Bonham passed. Iconic drummers - often imitated, never duplicated.
Why Neil was known as your favorite drummers favorite drummer
They have at least once... With Danny Carey from Tool... Danny was a huge Peart fan
If you do Spirit Of Radio please do the studio version as it is superior in every way. YYZ LIVE IN RIO , will shock and awe you!
👍💯
The Spirit Of Radio version in Toronto where they start with Paint it Black is pretty epic too
Not compared to some of the live versions I have seen over the years.
YYZ in Rio is all about the audience. It is a good performance but the sound is just bad.
Agree
The dude on the bottom look like he didn't even want to be there! LOL!
He always looks that way…..
He looks like he’d have more fun watching paint dry. Not sure why he’s there int first place.
Did he say Tom Sawyer wrote Huckleberry Finn?
looks like he is tired from eating 3 large pizzas
@@ganeshiyer9672He doesn't even belong there, not for this song anyway
Canadian here, thank you for reacting to this 3 man band! YYZ and The spirit of Radio live are awesome, I hope to see you watch those songs also.
RUSH..
THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME!!!
Hoser 😂
Rush Spirit of Radio next please
Working man is my favorite song by Rush 2112 is my favorite album by Rush Great reaction guys rock on
Yes!!! Welcome to Rush guys! Some more Rush songs: Subdivisions, Freewill, Limelight, Red Barchetta, Working Man, Fly By Night, Closer To The Heart, The Big Money, La Villa Strangiato
Rush, the Holy Trinity of rock 🤘
Spirit of Radio next please
The whole "Moving Pictures" album is a masterpiece!
Rush, the best thing to come out of Canada since John Candy!
Come now how about Jeff Healy, The Hip, Blue Rodeo, BTO, Loverboy, the list is long.....
@@cubangal1 They're good, but they are no John Candy!
I still miss John. 😢
Don’t forget Shania she up there too
@@cubangal1WTF?? You guys all forgot about APRIL WINE??? C’mon man, they’re a great Canadian band who really helped make FM Rock Radio cool.
Neil peart on drums 🥁 🪘 👌 ❤
Please more Rush!
The Rush rabbit hole is huge but worth the journey
Drummer considered one of the greatest drummers all 3 top notch....trivia for you one of the few bands that the summer did alot of the writing of lyrics
Whether someone is a real drummer, or just an air drummer, chances are that there’s some Neil Peart inspiration in there.
one of the best rock bands ever. 2 must listens are YYZ live in Rio and Neil Peart drum solo in Frankfurt. Amazing
19 studio records 167 songs in a 4+ decade career, these guys were the real deal and they influenced countless bands that followed them, three geniuses from Toronto, sad knowing the world will never see a band as great as they were again.
Whoa, it's crazy you guys haven't hit Rush yet. Definitely need to hit up Spirit Of Radio next!
Three guys....all good friends, no drama, no scandals. Now watch them play this live (or any RUSH for that matter) and you'll see just how dialed in these three men are. I was fortunate enough to see them live a handful of times. More RUSH please! (Then dive into Buckethead). Great channel, thanks for the upload.
The biggest drama in Rush that I know of was in 1969 (so it was years prior to Neil even joining after their first album), when Geddy was briefly kicked out of the band (because their manager had some stupid ideas). It became a disaster without Geddy, so they invited him back. Wise move. 😄
Great song! And what about that drummer!!!
There has never been a band like this! They were masters of their craft. They played live the same way they played here, perfect. Over 40 years and 19 studio albums and they did it their way. Never compromised their musical integrity. Miss them so much! RIP Mr. Peart...
One of my favorite bands of all time! Watched them a dozen times. The GOAT drummer of all time. The best 3 piece band ever. Looking forward to more reactions from Rush. Working Man, Freewill, The Spirit Of Radio, YYZ (live in Rio), Red Barachetta, the list is long!
three virtuosos soloing at the same time.
Rip to the Professor!!! Pure greatness🎉❤
Tom Sawyer was my introduction to Rush in the early 80s. This and Limelight are my favorite.
Thank You for the RUSH!
I love how they found a secluded place in the woods and lead down a few tracks over a period of a few days or so. It reminded me of older bands like the Allman Brothers when their members all lived in the same house just so they could practice over and over again. The only group that I know that is doing that is the Hip hop group Coast Contra who all lives together.
Rush is a legendary Canadian band. My cousin worked at the studio in Morin Heights where they recorded this song and their albums. True Canadian gold. Neil is the GOAT in my opinion. 🎸🇨🇦❤️
It’s a shame that LeStudio caught on fire and is no more - there certainly were some gems that were recorded there
@@roberthussey595 April Wine recorded there too.
This song hit #1 when I was a kid. I was an instant fan. These are the 3 most talented musicians in the industry. Neil Peart is your "favorite drummer's favorite drummer". An absolute legend.
Another great reaction video…appreciate your guys commentary/feedback.👍
I grew up in a town outside Toronto and they lived in the next town and we were playing in the park and heard music coming from the factories and we climbed on the dumpsters to watch in the window and saw them rocking out making the most impressive sounds we had ever heard. It was 1980 and I was 10. They saw us and came out and talked to us about hockey Cause that's what we Canadians do 😂) and we talked about the music they were recording and their cars. Geddy and Alex gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drumsticks they were so down to earth and humble. I saw them live in 88 and 03 and they kicked ass. I saw them the second time in front of 500,000 crazy Canadians at the SARS relief concert in Toronto in 2003 and they had us rocking for sure. If you ain't air drumming to this song you ain't alive 😂😂😂 Great reaction and Peace out guys ✌️ ☮️
So down for this rabbit hole.
Alex Lifeson: “Neil had worked on the lyrics from an idea that had come from a friend of ours, Pye Dubois (Max Webster). He expanded on that whole theme of rebellion and instinct... Most of ['Moving Pictures'] was written by all of us at the same time, in the room jamming with an idea and everybody going from there. What we ended up with was, I think, some of the strongest and most enduring material that we’ve ever written. There are a lot of songs on that record that reached a really high standard... They connected with a bigger audience. But there was also something about the sound of that record that resonated with people.”
Neil Peart: "I really think we started to bring it together a bit with 'Permanent Waves', but particularly 'Moving Pictures' and from then on... ['Tom Sawyer'] finds us at a time of such confidence that we were learning to make a song that was only six minutes instead of 12, 15, and use the same standards of arrangement. The drum is so detailed, but when we go into the middle to the odd time part, it was improvised. I got lost and I punched my way out of it and somehow came back to the one. And that improvisation became a new part. It's one of those key parts that I love and it was absolutely a mistake that I just got lucky and got out of."
You just witnessed the GOAT of drummers. The GOAT of trios and one of the greatest rock bands ever. Rush has 40 plus years of music like this.
Loved it, well done gents!
No words need be spoken once Corey gets his head moving and his big ‘ol smile lighting the room.
Yes!! Rushgal is happy! 🥰 Please do "Working Man Live in Cleveland" it's fantastic!
RUSH "YYZ" live in Rio a must do reaction
This is a very deep rabbit hole, gentlemen!! I love their studio stuff but to see them live is something else. These 3 are all masters in their field. When you see them live, you go, how is all this music coming from 3 guys? Geddy Lee is the vocalist, bass player and keys/synth. At times, he does all 3 things on stage at once, (using foot pedals, of course). Alex Lifeson is the guitarist who also uses foot pedals for synth and other sounds. Niel Peart, (pronounced like you would the word, ear). Peart. He is a master percussionist. Anything you can hit with a stick, he's got and he plays it. He writes almost all their lyrics and is know as "The Professor" for his very deep knowledge of wide ranging topics that he puts to song. Not everything is deep - like Tom Sawyer, here is not deep at all. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago from cancer.
Id love to request a live song from them called, Working Man. It's in Cleveland in 2011. These guys are well into their 50's at this point and they absolutely blow the roof off of that place. I really hope you to choose to watch it sometime soon. Peace and love, fellas.

Limelight and the Trees are two of my all time favourites! I grew up listening to RUSH, was 14 when they released Tom Sawyer, so many amazing songs!
Neil Peart is pretty much on everyone's list as a top 1 or 2 drummer in the world. Geddy Lee is in pretty much everyone's top 5 or 10 top bass players in the world. And Alex Lifeson is an amazing guitarist. Welcome to RUSH guys. There's a ton to explore. And Corey, if you like the drumming - listen to Subdivisions from RUSH. Neil said it was the most difficult song he had to drum to.
A Canadian here. I have been a hard-core Rush fan for a solid half-century now, enjoyed watching your reaction to this 3-man powerhouse. I saw them live in Calgary in about 1989, they are incredible composers, writers and musicians. RIP Neil Peart, I wish Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson all the best and thank them for the countless thousands of hours of musical enjoyment.
Anyways, welcome to the Rush rabbit hole, gentlemen, 2112, Spirit of Radio, The Trees, etc, etc, you still have about 50 yrs of stellar progressive rock to discover from this band!
There's not many bands that make you smarter the deeper you dive into their music. Rush is at the top, hands down.
I was a 15-year-old drummer in 1982 when I saw my first concert, it was Rush, and it changed my mind about how music should be played
Ollie looks more grumpy this episode
Yeah, he was very subdued. I thought he was gonna say he didn’t like the song. 🤔
I swear Ollie is only happy when he finds a song he hates. When he does like a song it's generally "yeah, it's alright" with a look of disappointment! 🤣
😂
Discovered them at 13. Im 60 now and still love them. RIP Neil
If you're considering to check other Rush songs, buckle up boys.... you're in for one hell of a long unbelievable ride. The greatest musicians and lyricist that ever existed. Hands down.
Rush is prog rock royalty. The changing time signatures and multiple instruments played are amazing. Neil Peart, The Professor, on drums is sadly no longer with us. But his mother actually asked him once why he doesn't ever smile when he's playing. His reaction was, Mom, this stuff is hard!
Kudos to the brothers who are discovering my music journey through the years at warp speed. 🎸😎
Rush was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the same year as Public Enemy. It was great watching Flavor Flav rock out in the audience as Rush played its short set. There's a Rolling Stone Magazine article about the night entitled "Rush, Public Enemy Get Emotional Backstage at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony" but I'm too cheap to subscribe so that I could cut and paste it here...
; )
YYZ live in Rio or Trees
Best drummer ever in history. ❤❤❤ RIP. Best 3 man band When instruments were played in a song❤
Tom Sawyer was from the album Moving Pictures released in 1981, not 1987.
Yeah, I was double checking the track list of _Hold Your Fire_ just to make sure something weird hadn’t happened to our timeline concerning Rush. I can confirm that it is, in fact, not on that album.
I was looking for this answer and wondered whether anyone had noticed.
Three guys and each a master. They sound this good in concert, perhaps better. RIP Neil
Welcome to 3 of the greatest musicians you’ll ever hear
I grew up in Toronto Ontario and saw Rush live 2 times at the old Maple Leaf Gardens back in the 80’s. These guys are mind-blowingly talented! RIP Neil (The Professor).
You guys on a serious journey with the GOAT of Prog Rock. RUSH is All There Is.
I saw them in the summer of 1984 when they headlined the TEXXAS JAM in the Astrodome. Fantastic concert.
Best 3 piece band ever!
Great reaction! I’d recommend jumping deep with Rush by doing “Working Man” live from Cleveland” Reggae, rock, funk, hard rock all in one live performance, one song. Amazing.
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥🔥😎
This band has an extremely deep rabbit hole , you have just begun ,fire fire fire get ready for a journey
Rush was great Neil Peart best drummer ever . What a band . Great songs , tight as hell. If you do a zeppathon you have to do 2112 Rushathon!
If you ever get the chance to react to video clips of Rush during their “Exit.. Stage Left” concert and react to songs like “Freewill”, “Trees”, “Xanadu”. “YYZ”…you’ll be amazed even more at how much these 3 legends put into their songs and concert…👍😎
The Trees is pure universal brilliance. Red Barchetta and Vital Signs also a must listen.
@@Derideo totally agree 1000%… and for those that know side B, track/song 1 of Rush’s ‘Moving Pictures’ album, “The Camera Eye” should be played at volume level 11 for maximum enjoyment…👍😎🔥
3 incredible, masterful musicians. They have broken boundaries with their musical creations. They are truly legendary. Appreciations for sharing this one.
Rush/Floyd/Zeppelin are my Top 3!!! Great Reaction Guys!
Check out the snarly, growly, guitar work by Alex, and Neil’s drum perfection, and Geddy hitting every note and Bass-line in “By-Tor and the Snow Dog”. Early Rush is where the magic lives. You can’t imagine it til’ you experience it. Rush, man. They have no equal.
Please do more rush....limelight is great
I’m only 33 but I have a long history with rush. They are my dad and all his friend’s favorite band. My dad is still alive but all of his closest friends have died. 2 to cancer and one from a car accident. It’s cool to see someone appreciate them.
Great reaction❤ love Rush❤
My favorite comment after listening to a Rush song... "I feel smarter now!"
They were often criticized for being too intellectual.
one of the best-recorded songs I have ever heard---crispest drumming of all time in my book........
Canadian guy here. Rush was one of my favorites growing up. Neil Peart is one of the greatest drummers of all time without a doubt. And Geddy Lee is no slouch on bass either. And they are my one and only claim to fame... I installed Geddy Lee and Alex Lifesons Cell Phones in their car in about 1988. And I was blown away they both drove Volvo 740 Station Wagons. Really nice guys and Alex Lifeson even sat and chatted to me for awhile... And I just gave away my age. Lol
I remember rollerskating to Tom Sawyer, touch and go from the cars, And I got you from split ends. All in the same session. the best days to be young.
The Spirit of Radio is a must listen. The changes they make throughout really highlight the diversity and musical mastery of this band.
Best band on the planet. Best guitarist, best bassist, best percussionist, who is also the greatest lyricist. Collectively, the best band...ever.
Rush was always clear in their productions. With their creativity and accomplishment, that clarity allowed people to appreciate what they were hearing. It almost hides their complexity, because it is all right there in front of you -- "in plain sight.".
Xanadu from Exit stage Left live. This is the best live performance you will ever witness. These three are extraordinary musicians and you see that for yourself. And Spirit of Radio studio version.
Canadian prog rock ❤
Not everyone knows but Neil wrote most of RUSH songs. He was not a real big people person he spent the majority of his time reading and riding his enduro motorcycle. There’s a great documentary with him going across country on his motorcycle before he passed.
Their entire catalogue is incredible. the changes over the years are awesome!
Corey Roy knows his music!! Get it!! ❤
Back in the day listening to this with headphones on and buzzing a little was heaven.
Please do more Rush!!
O's reaction absolutely priceless. He bears up under the strain well, very commendable.
What can I say it's RUSH lol great reaction y'all !
More Rush !!!
ALL THREE of these gentlemen are COMPLETE BEASTS of TALENT!! Never heard a bad RUSH song!! I think ya'll will ENJOY THIS RABBIT-HOLE!!! HUGS, YA'LL, from Texas!!
The vocalist, Geddy Lee, is also the bass player, and also plays keyboards. When he is playing keyboards with his hands, he is usually playing bass pedals with his feet. The amazing guitarist, Alex Lifeson is severely underrated, only because he is in a band with 2 other musical virtuosos'. It is easy to miss how great Alex is because there is so much going on in the music at the same time. The drummer...Neil Peart. One of the best in rock and roll music. Neil also writes the majority of the lyrics in the band. His lyrics are deep, thought-provoking, and relatable. He is a beast, as you saw, behind the drumkit. It is amazing that so much great, imaginative music is coming from just 3 people. And they can recreate every one of their songs live with the same greatness that they create in the studio.
Best band on the planet!!
Rush is amazing live! I recommend checking out 'Between the Wheels' live from the R30 tour in Germany. Heavy-sounding for a 3-person band!
