Led Zeppelin was many things, as a band, but their front man Robert Plant, adored American Blues. I had the pleasure to see them twice in NYC in 1977! They were and are my everything. They were steeped in The Blues, it was their foundation, but then they pushed the music into a whole other stratosphere. Mixing Blues, Rock, Funk, Folk and progressing with every album, you need to experience a bunch of tracks to get any perspective on their range. Each member of the band was so talented and worked together like a machine, which is clearer when you see live footage. They would extend album tracks into long improvised jams, with vocals and lead guitar trading riffs, the drums and bass a total powerhouse. Best to start with tracks from their debut album and work through songs chronologically, check out 'Dazed and confused' next for a slower swampy track. A lot of their stuff has been sampled and often imitated, but no one has come close to matching these guys.

The thing about Led Zeppelin is that they don't fit so neatly into any one genre. The closest summations I can think of would maybe be "blues rock" or "hard rock", the latter of which is general enough to describe at least half of their output, but ignores the many acoustic songs that, in my opinion, are some of the best stuff they did. I'm a sucker for "That's the Way" and "The Rain Song" in particular. As for "blues rock", that's what they started out as and describes most of the stuff on their first album or two and is something they never really gave up completely throughout their time as a band, but as time went on they put out more and more stuff that went completely outside that box. They did quite a bit of folk inspired stuff and even dabbled in funk and reggae.
They also predate the genre of heavy metal, although were one of its most major influences. They're "proto-metal", as I like to put it. They laid a good deal of the foundation without ever really fitting neatly into that mold themselves. The fact that they have a literal heavy metal in their name probably doesn't help with that confusion.

A little history lesson. Back in the 60s, there was a band called The Yardbirds, featuring guitarists Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. When Clapton left, Beck recruited studio musician Jimmy Page. In time, the band broke up, but they still had contractual obligations, so Page called in another studio musician by the name of John Paul Jones to play bass. They rounded out the band with Band of Joy singer Robert Plant, and his drummer, John Bonham, and they went under the name the New Yardbirds. Sometime around 1968, The Who drummer, Keith Moon, made a remark that any band formed by Jimmy Page would go over like a lead balloon, thus the band Led Zeppelin was born.
Sadly, in 1980, John Bonham died, and Led Zeppelin came to an end. But with it came a new sense of respect for the band, when Robert Plant said that if the remaining members were to continue to tour and record together, they would never do so under the name Led Zeppelin ever again (except special occasions such as Live Aid), because without any member of the original band, it was no longer the same band.

"like a lead balloon" is an old saying to mean something that's sure to fail, so a lead zeppelin (dirigible) would be an even bigger failure. They varied the spelling to be sure people would pronounce it like lead, the heavy metal, not like "leed" meaning "in front".

It took a UK band to reinterpret Delta blues into Rock N Roll. Led Zeppelin name came from a quote of another rocker saying the band would essentially flop like a lead balloon ie a Zeppelin. The LED was from their legendary manager Peter Grant who suggested dropping the A in Lead. Peter also led the way for bands to get 90% of the concert instead of 50%. He also got them more record label rights and was an ex-wrestler around 6'9" of don't F with! My favorite song is their cover of the true story 1927 Mississippi flood song called "When the Levee Breaks". The drum intro by the GOAT John Bonham is legendary and the Harmonica by Robert the singer is bad to the ass! Love you guys. I am 71. Bringing you the music.
    Something you need to know.
Music from this time has come full circle. In 1940s and 50s US white people didn’t get to listen to black music but the British did. The British bands would listen to the blues. They loved it. They took blues songs and played in rock. The Rolling Stones came to Chicago Chess Records to learn they went back UK made their version then went to US to play.
The music unites us over time
Before writing their own songs, they, The Rolling Stones, played mostly blues and rock and roll - artists like Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. The band's name itself comes from a Muddy Waters song called “Rolling Stone”.

Ah, Led Zeppelin. Four very gifted musicians coming together like a cosmic event to give us music that is still being listened to every day 54 years later by millions of people around the world. They also sill have, 40+ years after disbanding, the second highest number of rock album sales, second only to The Beatles. There are/were a lot of great rock bands but imo, Led Zeppelin was the best of them.
    Band members were:
Jimmy Page - guitarist, band founder, genius producer
John Paul Jones - bass, keys, multi-instrumentalist
    Robert Plant - vocalist, lyricist
John Bonham - monster of a drummer
This song is the first track on their 2nd album and was recorded and dropped in 1969. If you like blues, you'd likely appreciate a number of their songs, including the following, but they were a very diverse band so blues is just a part of their entire catalog.
    You Shook Me
    Dazed and Confused
    I Can't Quit You Baby
    How Many More Times
    The Lemon Song
    Bring It On Home
    Since I've Been Loving You
    When the Levee Breaks
How they got their name is a bit of a funny story. Page was talking with another musician about wanting to form a "supergroup" and the guy said his ideas would go over like a "lead balloon". Little did he know. lol After forming the group, Page landed on the name Led Zeppelin. Led instead of lead so the meaning wouldn't be misconstrued, and zeppelin (an airship), the most famous being the Hindenburg, which crashed in 1937. Page's wit at work.
Yeah, lots of people have both sampled and covered Led Zeppelin. If you get familiar with their music, you'll also recognize it being used in movies. I highly recommend a deep dive starting with their 1st album. Doubt that you would regret it.
Excuse my long comment. lol This was a very nice reaction. I enjoyed it.
Edit: This version edited out about 45 seconds from the original studio version. Should give that a listen if you want to hear the entire song.

@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 Too bad Pink Anderson and Floyd Council aren't around any longer to answer that question.

You mean Led Zeppelin stole music from the black blues artists that came before them. Don’t believe me, research Willie Dixon.

Mostly ALL musicians find inspiration from other artists! I definitely don't see it as stolen music! It kinda keeps the by gone era of talent and ideas alive!

As a teen in the early seventies hearing these guys on the radio for the first time was wild.
You've opened a Pandora's box, even over 50 years since they hit the scene and over 40 since they played their last gig, they are still the standard bearer of hard rock.
Want more? Stairway to Heaven, Good Times Bad Times, The Ocean, Kashmir, Rock n Roll, Dyer Maker, Celebration Day, The Song Remains the Same and many, many more.

I saw them play in the 70S. Every song they released was incredible in its own way, sometimes different, but as you say. DOPE!

Great reaction. You can't go wrong with any song when it comes to Led Zeppelin. Remember, these guys were trailblazers. They paved the way for a lot of bands. Led Zeppelin is also the most sampled bands in hip-hop.

Younger folks today go back and want to reclassify the classic hard rock groups as metal. So yeah….younger people will say that Zeppelin was like the first heavy metal band. But they were not. They were a group that was based first and foremost in American Delta and Chicago blues and rockabilly. All the British rock bands of the 60’s and 70’s (except the progressive rock genre) were steeped in blues. Zeppelins first two albums leaned heavily on blues…and then they brought in folk, funk, psychedelia, even reggae and Middle Eastern sounds. To those who really know their catalogue, they are revered for their diversity of genres, for their immense improvisational skills onstage, their great use of dynamics in their music. Add all that to their talent and skills…each one a master….and their incredible stage presence…..and you have the top hard rock band of the 70’s………who also did beautiful acoustic ballads. 😁
