I think it just shows that wanting to improve as a woman and being supportive of other women is not exclusive of a show-and-tell box full of body parts. We should be supportive of the goals of our peers, even if they are drenched in blood and vengeance, and not yoga and new diets.
Although there was a hesitancy in supporting the main character’s goal, there was a polite effort to accept it. That pulled at my heart strings.
I like how PJ is so nice and polite to the other women, and how them, even if they don't get her, are also polite to her.

I love how understated Melissa's character is, she could easily have veered into being creepy or crazy but she maintains her polite and honest demeanour which really elevates the sketch.

That's actually a really fun concept here. The characters are uncomfortable with some of the things she says and does, but in a respectful way. Not the "Santa Baby" kind of way. It's an interesting balance and, as someone else said, Melissa's acting really helps make PJ someone you want to root for.
@@malcomchase9777 yeah. They could have made P.J an asshole or a sociopath, but she's a kind hearted, supportive woman who also does her best to make the other women in the group feel good. I was thinking during the sketch how genuinely kind she seemed and how nice she was in contrast to what they usually make this kind of character act like, which is unhinged.
It’s funny to see “wholesome” used to describe a sketch with such a morbid center but you’re not wrong.

She is one of the best SNL guests of all time. Period. I died when she said “very astute, that’s nice.” Lmao it’s hilarious to me when rough, grimy characters are also articulate.

I think that’s part of what makes classics like Raising Arizona and O Brother Where Art Thou work. You’ve got these redneck, uneducated type looking characters speaking with the most fluent, thought out, and articulate manner. Comedy gold every time
Is it weird that I find the character of PJ so likable?

Hey, I actually identified really strongly with the character. I've wound up doing normal people things on several occasions (I wrote out a story involving a block party right here but it was long) and it's been weird.
I think that is much of the humor. She is relatable and seems normal in so many ways but just happens to have a few sociopathic tendencies.
I like how she's fairly respectful and supportive of the other women. She seems to view their presentations to be just as valid as hers...which makes this sketch even more hilarious.
Yeah she's not meant to be a bad person. Just someone who's going through some trauma.

Melissa McCarthy is no doubt a genius but Vanessa is so effing subtle and versatile and subversive. She’s so brilliant as well. They really all are. Such a pleasure to witness how women have thrived and become some of the absolute hands down funniest performers on SNL these last 15 years.
The best part about this is that PJ really looks like she’s happy and willing to be there a part of the mommys group.

To be honest she always plays the same character. It's fine in some things, but for example thunder force was a recent blunder of hers. There was so much potential funny in that premise, but it ended up being a passionless lackluster of a movie.
agreed but that might have been earlier in her career when she hadn't evolved into the very talented comedian we know today. Some of her earlier roles weren't too endearing either

She's a master of staying in character. Watch the "This Is 40" bloopers. Funniest I've EVER seen. First 90 seconds are nothing but her improvising insults at Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann and them losing it repeatedly.

This is one of my all-time favourite SNL skits. I cannot count how many times I have watched it. All of Melissa's lines are tight and hilarious. All of the other actors are stellar as well.

I like that the group didn't try to shut down PJ, but instead was very respectful, and actually tried to understand her.
No joke, I would actually watch a full movie about these characters lol
That's the funny thing about it - even in such a short skit, there's a backstory written into every character. Denise is so cutely self-deprecating, like when she says "I want to take more photographs," she does this really tense shoulder-shrug, like she's afraid people will judge her. Vanessa's character is SO patient and positive. She's very much like a therapist, which makes sense since she formed the group. Carol is very outgoing and willing to show off, but when she has to show her poster AFTER P.J.'s, her lip starts trembling and she doesn't feel like the boldest person in the room anymore. I love how even though Aidy's character doesn't get to say much, she still has a big vision board with inspirational sayings on it; we just don't get to see her present it. And of course, Melissa (P.J.). I love how she doesn't have a particularly feminine name. She truly waits her turn. I love how she asks to borrow the video and there's no joke. I love her tiny comments: "That's astute. Nice." "I just kind of got into it - it made sense to me." So I agree with you, a whole movie would be awesome.

Honestly, if she didn't have a blood-stained box of human body parts, I would love to be friends with her. When she says "this is the man who killed my father," it felt very sincere. She's creative and intelligent with a way with words. I like how she says she wants to borrow the copy of "Under the Tuscan Sun", and there's no joke. She just seems genuinely interested and is introspective when asked who she is now.

Melissa McCarthy is under rated. She rarely looks at the cue cards and because of that she is so much more natural. Her side glances with quips are so very naturally acted.
Melissa is amazing. There are many great guests on SNL, but you can see how much effort Melissa makes, every time she's in a sketch. Awesome.

This kills me every time. What sells it for me is how deadpan, but not emotionless, McCarthy is throughout. If she was over the top with bloody vengeance, it might wear out; if she was totally cold, it wouldn’t be funny. But McCarthy hits a sweet spot of calm-yet-internally-hyperfocused, and it shows in every line and action. She truly is one of the funniest people alive today!
