its been my life for days...
I feel like Melissa McCarthy improvises a lot. Like she says what the script asks, but she adds a little gesture, or an extra sentence, etc. And it never feels out of place, it is organic and she always stays in the scene. She's pretty damn great, she feels more like a regular cast member than a guest host.
She actually doesn’t use the script at all. The woman is amazing.
She both knows her lines (avoids cue-cards), can drive a scene and have an amazing presence with small improvements on-air. It is nuts how good she is, sad some movies aren't able to fully explore it.

She throws herself into character, like Lucille Ball. And her gestures... she has incredible comic timing!

I'm positive she was supposed to drink the bottle, but there's no way she could have planned the air bubble that caused it to squirt all over her. As soon as she tipped up the bottle, the air in the top went inside the bottle itself, but as soon as she squeezed it, the compressed air forced half the bottle out of the spout and all over her face. You can see her pause for a micro-second to get used to it, and then she just leans into it.
Not really, you couldn't even see their faces when it happened.
I applaud the actors that didn’t break character in this skit, I would have died!👌🏻😂

Sometimes I forget how incredibly talented Melissa McCarthy is until I see her with other comedians. She definitely has that special something that makes her stand out.
EclipseInID 2017 dude they make her a big part of the skits she’s in because 1. She is The Host 2. They think she’s competent. Nobody said anything about weight or how she’s a woman. People think she’s funny and you don’t have to think that but don’t try to act like you can read everyone’s minds because you’re doing a pretty sh*t job.
Yah people getting real shitty but the only thing here is she stands out cause the script. She’s as talented as everyone there.

You have to wonder what the pitch for this sketch was. It so heavily relies on Melissa's interpretation, that I honestly don't know how it got approved, other than if they were like, "We're going to put some ranch dressing out there, have her wear a Spock sweatshirt, and just let her do her thing."

Definitely one of the best performances I've seen in SNL clips in a while. Didn't read a cue card once, clearly was improvising a ton of the gestures and flourishes, had great energy even though her character was passive and really committed to the bit at the end for the laugh. Could have been kind of a mediocre bit but she elevated it to be really hilarious. Good stuff. 😄
Her expressions, and gestures make her the whole package as a comedian.

@@justayoutuber1906 That’s only partially true. There are a lot of SNL sketches where actors somewhat improvise. Michaels obviously doesn’t want people going off the rails, but he does allow for some improv and last minute changes. Some examples that come to mind are the Garth and Kat segments (which are all almost entirely improvised), and the Short Term Memory Loss Theater where Bill Hader in an interview spoke about how Fred Armisen intentionally wore a goofy jacket last minute that he didn’t wear in rehearsal just to spice up the scene and maybe break Hader. 😄 Armisen also changed up his delivery of “Whaaaaat are you doing here??” in the Californians between the rehearsal and the live version.
Now obviously the show is 95% scripted beyond that. And Michaels doesn’t like unexpected improv that doesn’t gel with the sketches or flow of production. So I think it’s a case where he’s ok with slight improv, particularly if its someone he trusts or thinks is talented in that area, but tries to steer clear of improvised lines that might disrupt the timing of the sketches and definitely doesn’t like if guests spring major surprises that cause controversy (e.g. Sinead O’Connor ripping up the photo of the Pope, Andy Kauffman, etc)
McCarthy actually wrote this sketch when she was with Second City, so she knew it well.

She is hilarious. Just love her and her tremendous talent as a comedian. I would put her up there with Lucille Ball and Carol bernette.
It's like Melissa can transform into whatever character she's playing. It makes it a lot more believable.

She's the only host, in all of her segments, where she's not looking off to the side reading cue cards. I've never seen this with any host OR any cast member. I would love to ask someone on the show about her, because it's just unbelievable.
This skit always makes me think that Chris Farley was looking down on the SNL stage that night and was smiling proud and maybe even laughing along , she absolutely brought the Chris Farley spirit of SNL back for a time.

I was just watching this and it was my exact thought she reminds me so much of the good times with Chris Farley. They both do that little extra in the skits that the others just don't do and they pull it off. Would have loved to have seen Chris and Melissa in a skit together... a shame what happened.
It's crazy that as a host, Melissa comes in and puts up performances and sketches that are so much better than anything the regular cast does
I'd say there are a handful of recent cast members that are on her level. Andy Samberg is definitely one of the better ones. So is Bill Hader.

Everyone is talking about Melissa and they forgot it's a huge ad for HIDDEN VALLEY RANCH DRESSING. . .
SNL targets an American audience. Americans live and die by Ranch, especially the original Hidden Valley. It’s not an ad, it’s a way of life.
This takes me back to my market research days during one summer in college when I used to give taste tests like this. However, I don't remember that kind of enthusiasm from any of the subjects. "The product is loaded with bacon" "There's a Hidden Valley Ranch party in my mouth" Can you garlic ranch blast me now. Probably one of the most memorable scenes in all of SNL is when she explodes the dressing all over her face.
This skit is one of my faves with Melissa's insane antics.

They’re saying she’s so good she feels like one of the great cast members rather than a host, considering the host is usually the weakest link.
They really need someone of her caliber, to boost their ratings. In Living Color, and MadTV, were always my favorites. Miss them days.
It's funny cause if she was a cast member she'd be remembered as on of the greats like Will Ferrell, Chris Farley, etc. She would leave a huge mark, only a handful of people could do that. I think Jim Carrey would be the same, can't believe he actually auditioned and they didn't take him, seems crazy. Dude could make you laugh with just a facial expression he's literally handmade for sketch comedy.
