- The first 4-wheel drive vehicle to win a major off-road race was a Bill Stroppe-built Ford Bronco, driven by Rod Hall at the 1969 NORRA Mexican 1000. Rod won the race overall, beating the motorcycles by nearly 10 minutes. 50 years later, the four wheel drive system has evolved into this…. This is a Geiser Brothers-built, four wheel drive Rigid Industries Unlimited Trick Truck. It’s driven by the young off-road racer Justin Matney and has ushered in a new era of off-road evolution and ingenuity.
Like its two-wheel drive brethren - it is hand built from the ground up, using state of the art, computer guided machines to make every part with military precision. It features the same monster engine package as most of its competitors, with a top speed of nearly 140 miles per hour.
But it’s the suspensions of these vehicles that are truly remarkable. They are able to soak up and drive over three foot ruts and holes without slowing down - and it’s all because of their unique suspension design. Combining the massive shocks on these trucks with four wheel drive may prove to be the future for the sport of off-road desert racing.
Four wheel drive has been a part of off road racing since its earliest days. But over the past twenty years as the top Unlimited trucks evolved, they became two wheel drive demons predominantly with vast amounts of rear wheel drive power.
For the last four decades manufacturers and teams alike have tried to build a four wheel drive powertrain that could take the insane abuse of desert off-road racing. It wasn’t until early in 2016 when this newly developed four wheel drive Trick Truck became the proof of concept, winning a desert race overall. It has a massive advantage in corner-to-corner acceleration and driving precision, and could change the game in off-road racing forever.
I thought in a few shots I was looking at my TRAXXAS UDR and realized it was the real deal. Traxxas did an amazing job replicating that vehicle!
@Tyler Steckler you will love it! Great Truck! It's more trophy style. GL with whatever you choose.
That front view of the drop is insane
That moment when you realize this video is 3 years old
i allways had loved videos where baja/trophy trucks drive highspeed on bumby terrain, awesome
The Rock Bouncers need to study these Trick Truck suspensions so they aren't bouncing so much, maybe then they'd be able to better maintain control and recover from the last obstacle to stay on line. Tim Cameron and a few others are starting to soften up their suspensions and have much success in competitions. I admire these trucks, wish I had one! LOL
Have you seen the new traxxas replica of this truck?
Yep we love it too!
What a clip 😮
I am so happy that they are finely go to 4wd!!!
I was about to ask that, because i saw a video of TT racing from last year, but every truck there was only 2wd! Why dont they use more 4wd?
@@jinglemyberries866 it's Very difficult to make a front diferencial and shafts that won't brake on these extreme conditions.
They just had another 2wd truck win the mint 400. These 4wd trucks also seem way too hard on tyres, the truck that came first had no flats.
Its Badass!
Looking forward to this year's 400!
Awesome video!
...I encourage people to do some research on Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's 4wd Toyota that was winning overall baja races into the late 90's.
Yeah those Toyota trucks in the Baja 1000 were almost like the Audi Quattros in the rally/road racing circuit (that got outlawed eventually)they completely dominated the desert in speed, handling, and most importantly durability.
They had IRS with flexible driveshafts!!!
@jeff deathrage Well you couldn't turn them into a pretzel or anything,.... but they did have flex.
Thanks. I just did.
Thanks. Now I'm stuck watching you tube videos of him. Pretty awesome driver and vehicle.
@Casa Del Amo Are you seriously asking that question?🤪LOL!🤤
Super cool man
pause at exactly 1:25 and you get the street racing version
Should I ever win the lottery I know one of these bad boys will get a new home .😍😍😛😛🤑🤑✌✌🤙🤙👍👍
UDR owners just realizing where there truck came from lol.
offroad in truck pick up.,., goodjobs brother
id like to see this good lookin truk race at the baja portalegre 500.
Just for tease 🤟

Ooo
Traxxas UDR XL
When I win the lottery, I’ll have them build one of those with an enclosed cab with heat and defrost and seating for 5 with a milder engine and make it my daily driver!
Then, what you want is a "prerunner" truck. It's basically a street legal trophy truck. Check out Kibbetech's trucks. They are insane, but with most of the creature comforts of a street vehicle.
it's an axial yeti.... =D
RC Hunter
It’s a Traxxas Unlimited Desert Racer! Exactly.
Awesome tech, just sucks it's not as fun to watch!
Why is the term "Military" thrown into any products description? How are people not aware that the military buys equipment from the lowest bidder? Effectively, he narrator stated that this truck was hand made by the cheapest labor available. Boy, o'boy; that sure inspires confidence!
"military precision" is referring to parade marching. Which is historically about being exact and precise with your movement, which is what CNC is all about. They aren't claiming military tested, or strength, or spec. Just that everything is machined exactly and assembled precisely. Older trucks were just kinda thrown together. In the last few decades things have changed. Actual engineers and computer simulation and computer milling/cutting of parts has allowed an enormous amount of advacement over the 1970 bronco with some shocks and motor. It's like a piper cub vs an f-15.
All thanks to ULTRA4 RACING!
4 Wheel Drive racing was around a long time before Ultra, but we're good friends with Dave and love KOH.
Does anyone knows where i can find a running video of this beast ?
what is the trophy truck called
Is there sway bars on the front and rear or only the rear? Can you guys tell be me where the sway bars are because I want my rc cars to be realistic 😂👍.
this is not the first trophy truck to use 4wd....I know back in 2004 terrible herbst had a truck that was 4wd , but problem is front wheel suspension travel they had only 22" ......this is like back 2006 when alan pflueger tried a rear-end cv axle in a trophy truck it worked for a short time , but cv boots would not stay
it drives 140 mile/h with 4wd !!
that's what special about it I think
I can't get over 85 m/h with my fj cruiser in 4wd
I don't think anyone said it was the first. But the truck is the next big step forward.
Only 22"? This thing only has 23"..
I have the 1/7 scale traxcas version 60 miles performance hour out the box
Why does it have a Lowrance Hook fish finder?
What shocks are on that?
Can we figure how to get these cheaply mass produced pls😁
Hey is anyone related to Bill Stroppe? My great grandfather and Bill both made a car together which I have to this day. Would love to get in contact and share pictures
How does drive get delivered to the front wheels? Is it a couple of axles with universal joints at either end?
Brett - yes they're referred to as "plunged axles".
@@UnlimitedOffRoadRacing awesome thank you mate
So how much does that TT weigh now with its AWD System?
Around 6000lbs. But that is not atypical most off-road trucks are so heavily fortified they will NEVER weigh less than 5000lbs. Most 2wd TT's weight about 5200lb.
Until see it running the Dakar 2019, there's no much to say. We'll see
Dakar trucks are completely different setup and design and they also serve completely different purposes.
traxxas udr?
So what has come of this? Haven't heard of it much since this race.
Bryce Menzies is running one now. He raced the Mint 400 this year and nearly won it. Change is coming.
Is that the narrator from Death Race?
Didn't Terribles already do this? 4X4 I mean?
Jacob Bland that's correct
Yes I was a big fan then www.fourwheeler.com/features/0210-ford-f150/
What's the background music playing?
Hey Freedom - not a major band - it's from our music library.
1:16 drop test
I'll take ur Intire stock XD
But I have a question how much is it?
All thanks to Audi - let's hope we see a leap like that again today!
You do realize there were other competitors with 4wd at the time. Audi won races. Doesn't change the fact that group b cars all had 4wd.
except audi was the first
Oliver Rashid The first what?
What does Audi have to do with desert racing?
the audi quattro in group b rally racing. they pioneered the modern day advanced 4wd system. before audi in group b, it was believed that 4wd systems were too heavy and cumbersome to succeed in offroad racing.
Is this the same guy that does voice-over for the NFL history and movies like Idiocracy?
No but he's just as rad!
I want your truck T.T
very interesting. i didn't know there were any 4wd vehicles in desert racing. i'd like to actually see the components instead of listen to a narrator
I see an atlas t case
traxxas
Something about this guy's name rubs me the wrong way. Not sure what it is. 🤔
😆
I can build a 4wd truck just like this one maybe better, just take Shannon Campbell's KOH ifs buggy and make it a 2 seater. slap on a truck body and we are off racing.
Hmm, why havent you yet?
Not quite that easy. Way different geometry in the desert. We had 30+ 4400 cars at the Mint in 2018 and very few of them beat the Unlimited trucks on time. Apple and oranges.
You're going to build a better truck than the geiser brothers? Now that is comedy. Btw, gesier trucks have more podium wins than any other truck builder out there. There is a reason they are called the ferarris of the desert.
DAKAR
WHY is this random video from 2016 in my recomended videos?!!! I don't care about it!
