Portal hubs do nothing for wheel travel, the spindle can be whatever size you want. They only used a portal hub so the differential and axleshafts would last longer. Put the gearing in the hub and the differential and axleshafts don't have to carry 100% of the torque load...but it has nothing to do with wheel travel.
@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper the way the geometry works with the axles being offset. It allows more travel without the axles binding up on full compression/drop.
@@justinunderwood5040 4WD spindles and A-arms can be made to put the axleshaft in any position you want between the UCA and LCA. You want the axleshafts to be right next to the UCA? Sure, it can be done easily. You want them right next to the LCA? That's easy too. All it takes is loading programs up in your CNC machine. Literally the only thing a portal axle does in that regard is relocate the wheel centerline further down from the axleshaft. Think about it. Pause the video at 3:42 and look at them. If the wheel came out where the axleshaft was, what difference would that make in travel? None. What difference would it make as far as the axleshaft geometry? None. Because the axleshaft is still in the same place. All it would take to get that exact axleshaft/UCA/LCA geometry with a non-portal spindle is to put the wheel hub where the axleshaft meets the spindle, and that's not a difficult thing to do at all. Portal hubs are great, you just have to understand that they do nothing for geometry or travel in a trophy truck. They help by getting the torque off the axleshafts. A trophy truck doesn't really benefit from additional clearance, but they provide that as well.
@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper yes bud, what I was meaning is that you can tun a shorter axle (not by much) and lighter axle (if you dare). Its the placement of being lined up over the center of the wheel along with the fact that its less stress on the joints that "allows" a more durable travel with the axle. That is what I meant when I said helps with the travel. The UCA and LCA dictate travel, everything else limits it by many different factors.
But the axle length remains the same whether it's a portal or direct drive, and the placement of where the axle interfaces with the spindle can be done whether you're running portal or direct drive hubs. So, the portal hubs don't change any aspect of the axle's travel or limits thereof. It only changes how much torque the axle needs to transmit.
