On January 8, 2011, 22-year-old college dropout Jared Lee Loughner shot congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the head at a constituency meeting in a supermarket car park in Tucson, Arizona, before going on to kill six people and injuring 12 others. This documentary uses testimonies from former school friends, eyewitnesses, survivors, and experts to examine the life of Loughner to find out what drove him to try to assassinate Giffords.

You can catch the signs all you want: you can't force the mentally ill to accept treatment. It took a court order to force him to be medicated. That is reality: people with schizophrenia don't just go, oh thank you, I now know I have a problem, please help. Are you kidding me. The public doesn't understand this; everyone thinks some magic "therapy" is the answer. There isn't any, and the mentally f'up often have no insight into being ill.
What needs to happen is a mandatory psych evaluation by 2 different professionals, before anyone is granted a gun license. NO license unless both evaluations are clear. It should be without appeal, and of a duration of 10 years, before they can try again. But that's fantasy, the USA will never restrict their gun access in any sensible way.

Typically criminal defendants with mental illnesses are medicated in order to keep them from acting out in court. Andrea Yates murdered her five children in the bathtub of her home in Houston, Texas on June 20, 2001 due to her having a very potent combination of Postpartum Depression and Postpartum Psychosis. Andrea was medicated with an anti-anxiety medication while she was incarcerated at the Harris County Jail awaiting trial. Andrea pleaded Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity; but prosecutors Joseph Owlmby and Kaylyn Williford argued that Andrea was not insane at the time of the murders and knew her actions were wrong. That being said; the prosecution did agree with Andrea's attorney George Parnham in that Andrea had a very long and well-documented history of mental health issues, including multiple suicide attempts. Despite their agreement; the prosecution backed up their claims of Andrea not being insane at the time of the murders and knew her actions were wrong by pointing out these five key factors:
1.) Andrea waited for her husband Rusty Yates to leave for work because she knew he would have stopped her from harming the children.
2.) Andrea locked up the family dog in order to keep it from interfering with her plans.
3.) Andrea locked the doors and windows of the house in order to keep the kids from trying to escape and to prevent the neighbors from stopping her.
4.) Andrea called 9-1-1 after the murders and requested that the police and an ambulance come to her house. She also called her husband at work and said that he needed to come home right away because "something awful happened to all of the kids."
5.) Andrea confessed to the murders at the scene.

I have a few issues with this whole situation.
First, I'm almost positive that this wouldn't have happened if people would have done something about this guy a long ass time before the shooting. All these people saying they knew there was something wrong with him, he had weird behaviors, people were scared of him, he had a million guns and ammo, his school kicked him out...he couldn't get a clear MH exam. His parents let his weird behaviors develop and did nothing about it...they let him drop put of high school and drop all his friends, collect guns, they took his car away. I think his parents should have been charged with neglect or something - they were scared and knew he was off and they did NOTHING. They could have taken him to MH a long time before all that, back in middle or high school...when he started acting messed up. Past that and he should have been mental hygiene arrested.
Then, his school only cared when he posted the video about the school being a financial rip off. They only cared about negative publicity that may have influenced someone who saw it to not go there. So, they only cared about if they lost money. That's messed up too. They knew he was messed up prior to that but also did nothing.
Also, it's messed up that there wasnt security there and if there was, they did a shitty job not trying to protect the public...its sad a bunch of old ass people took him down and saved God knows how many, instead of security.
Lastly, its messed up how he wasn't just charged with murder and attempted murder...why they differentiated and said Congress woman and federal employees, etc like they are more important or its more serious than murdering a normal person. A congress woman isn't more important than that little girl who died. Life is life.
At the end of the day, a lot more people have blood on their hands because they let a KNOWN crazy person kill and injure a lot of people because they did nothing. Sad.

Unfortunately, there are thousands of disturbed people across America who exhibit symptoms as strange or worse than Loughner. Most never attack anyone. Fewer kill any one person. Even fewer commit mass shooting murders. They cannot all be thrown behind bars for the mere possibility they might commit a mass killing, especially if they have never committed a crime. Adults like Loughner cannot easily be 5150'd without a high standard of evidence suggesting they are an immediate threat. Much of his behavior was simply weird, anti-social. Even when they are, institutionalized by 5150, once they are stabilized with medication , they usually get released quite quickly as authorities have no constitutional right to hold them longer. If people could be incarcerated for being socially isolated loners who make bizarre videos, our prison system would collapse from overcrowding and the potential for abuse, false accusations for ulterior motives, would be massive. Your stronger point is that more people could have tried to encourage him to get help, whether he would go along with it or not.

One of my aunts used to ride horses with Gabriel Gifford; my great aunt was buying groceries and left just before the shooting started, she was actually only a matter of feet away from Jared as she checked out; had she not been rushing back home to make breakfast for some guests at her house, she could have easily been killed; she even got interviewed by a news station. Absolutely one of the craziest things that has happened here!

The speaker said she was a newly elected senator which I know sounds like a trivial error but is like saying someone is a judge when they are a lawyer (but not a judge.) Hard to write that off as a simple typo which we all make. Kind of a really weird error considering the video is about her and they can't even get that straight. I moved to Tucson in 2005 and I remember this happening and how it shook the entire city. This documentary says some questionable things (such as it taking place in a "downtown" shopping mall -- this Safeway is actually nowhere near downtown and is located much further north in the city in a strip mall about five minutes from where I lived at the time), however the statement of the small-town feel Tucson has is very accurate. When the shooting happened, it was as though the entire city had been sucker-punched in the face. For months, you couldn't go anywhere or talk to anyone without Laughner or the shooting coming up and how outraged, confused and violated people felt. Ironically, it seemed as though the city itself closed ranks and bonded over this tragic event. It's a real eye opener, especially in light of how things feel across the nation in the ensuing years.

Congress protects its own. It’s not a bad thing. Only 1 congressman, Leo Ryan, has died in the line of duty. We can’t have presidents deaths, congressmen’s deaths etc, be regular deaths. They are not better than us but they do hold positions of power that make them natural targets. The fact a blanket law protects our elected officials and judges, is actually not a bad thing. The child killed may have been a “special circumstance” or “special victim” as well. Yes, everyone is equal but by the jobs people choose, their deaths at the hands of another, is more than problematic. Like killing a police officer. The murder of some people has to be dealt with differently for our justice system to function properly.

It restores your faith in goodness hearing about these brave people who either died saving others or risked their lives subduing this dangerous lunatic. If his parents were troubled by his behaviour and knew he had a gun, why didn't they do something about it? Oh, yeah - right to bear arms! Even if you are a lunatic! Good luck with that!
