On January 8, 2011, 22-year-old college dropout Jared Lee Loughner shot congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the head at a constituency meeting in a supermarket car park in Tucson, Arizona, before going on to kill six people and injuring 12 others. This documentary uses testimonies from former school friends, eyewitnesses, survivors, and experts to examine the life of Loughner to find out what drove him to try to assassinate Giffords.

Something that I never agreed with is that it is a bigger deal when a congressman or woman or any other official gets killed compared to a normal citizen.
@Sir Miller Let's not please. No official; Trump, Biden, Pelosi, McConnell, etc. None of them deserve death.
That's not really true; it much more breaks down along race; plus, being a public person with political views; in and of itself, makes one more of a target. I hope the FBI is keeping an eye on you, Sparky.
@Sir Miller Nazi

That's one of the main reasons he lost it.
He has eyebrows, but it's camouflaged against his skin, for tactical purposes.
Some people have a condition called alopecia that causes hair loss including eyebrows and head.
@@BloodSoilandSoul Like our dear president who only has a long tuft of hair at the right, posterior side of his head. He has an Italian weave from that tuft (the name escapes me but they used to have a salon in Trump Tower, NYC). "They shot the congresswoman!"
What about the other 18 people?
They dont matter I think
They all said multiple people were shot. She just happened to be the only one they knew by name. Give me a break.
Because when I'm in a mass shooting, I make damn sure I have all the facts before dialing 9-1-1 so I can calmly, and accurately, provide the police with all information up front, without being prompted.
the first guy who called called while the shooting was still going on and it lasted 17 seconds, the first person he saw shot was Gabby so fuck off. Im sick of the bullshit about this. Living in AZ and having had Gabby as my congresswoman means that whatI have to say is more important than some little shit from Baltimore.
It is more likely than not that that caller (and many other people) only saw Ms. Giffords get shot. She was the first. They turned and ran. Nobody's gonna stand there taking stock of what else is going on before calling 911.
Exactly. "We can't just push these people away, they need help." We need to be proactive. Catch those warning signs before it's too late
Um, you can thank Ronald Reagan for defunding a huge chunk of mental health care, especially for inpatient beds for the chronically mentally ill. Since then, prisons have begun to house the mentally ill whose behavior causes problems for society. Unfortunately, they aren't doing a very good job.
That would be half of my A$$ crazy coworkers and my lazy eye mail lady.
@@melanieclark2668 I always blamed him for that, but it was actually the ACLU that decided mental patients have rights not to be locked up without their consent. There must be a way to protect them from abuse and the broader society from these mass shootings. When he was suspended from college, his parents should have taken him for a 72 hour hold at least. How did this loony get a gun, anyway⁉️⁉️⁉️Parents are partially responsible for not doing that.
@@melanieclark2668 it started way before that. Was liberals in the 60s that thought holding crazies against their will was cruel.
You can catch the signs all you want: you can't force the mentally ill to accept treatment. It took a court order to force him to be medicated. That is reality: people with schizophrenia don't just go, oh thank you, I now know I have a problem, please help. Are you kidding me. The public doesn't understand this; everyone thinks some magic "therapy" is the answer. There isn't any, and the mentally f'up often have no insight into being ill.
What needs to happen is a mandatory psych evaluation by 2 different professionals, before anyone is granted a gun license. NO license unless both evaluations are clear. It should be without appeal, and of a duration of 10 years, before they can try again. But that's fantasy, the USA will never restrict their gun access in any sensible way.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
Unless you're the President or a Senator then you got them 24.7 and you got no privacy. They're in your house at breakfast checking your mail.

He shouldn't have even been allowed to carry a gun. He's a psycho, terrorist, and very unstable. If he didn't like the government and such he should have just left the country instead of murdering all these people. He shouldn't have been in college if he was so against the education system among other things why did he enroll in college. @@crunchies4me your reply sounds like you're trying to reason with a psycho. I guess you're too young,
That’s America and the 2nd amendment. Until he was officially dealt with, he had a right to posses a gun. In Arizona, many people carry concealed guns (though they have to have a permit for that, I think. I know some states don’t even require a permit, they just allow concealed carry of guns (usually handguns but in some states you can technically carry any gun you chose and legally own).

All human life is equal. No matter your status.
@J DR no. I would not defend their rights because they violated basic human rights when they committed that heinous crime, automatically forfeiting their own.
@J DR And how am I a hypocrite when I say that? I value all life. Criminal or not. But due process, prosecutions and executions are what set us apart from the animals. To sit there and say you cant impose justice on a criminal because of their rights, is ignorant. I PROTECT my RIGHTS, by following the LAW. They did not, which shows they have little regard for their own to begin with.
@J DR I'm baffled as to why you're trashing another country over the internet. If you dont live here, I dont expect you to understand. And your rebuttal was absolute nonsense. "Wah, you spoke truth and facts and I have no defense, so I'm just gonna say you're stupid." Lol. And frightened of us? We are frightened of you my friend. I'm pretty sure the others that were injured were not left on the ground to rot...
I've said it before and I'll probably keep saying it: Plea bargains should NEVER be on the table for people who commit such crimes.
#JenniferCordova You may be right, but it's sometimes the only way to get a criminal to admit guilt. Otherwise, they just plead not guilty and a trial has to be held. By offering a plea, at least they're punished and we don't have to pay for and endure a trial.
I guess they thought he'd potentially be found insane at the time of the murder
I wouldn't say that smashing up postboxes was normal behaviour for anyone.
You would be surprised lol in the country it’s common for teens to do so back in my days, nowadays I don’t hear about it happening but yes it used to be a thing for teens who drove to do, maybe not every where in the U.S but all surrounding towns where I lived growing up it was normal for kids to do. That was back in the 90s and 2000s I never personally did it but was with friends back roading who would do it but I always told them to stop and not do it idk lol I guess I was just raised right, kind of like graffiti etc it was just something teens young adults would do in small towns.
It’s also a Federal offense. These guys were delinquents and needed intervention back then. Dropping out of high school is not really normal either. Mental illness ignored always causes issues, and certainly these mass shooters are at the extreme end of the spectrum, but we should never ignore these behaviors. Where were his parents⁉️⁉️⁉️

He looks like he has alot of problems, mental problems🙄🤕.
Paranoid schizophrenia is also enough to change personality and mind set of person he don't need to have more of this crap..
A bit strange how he was legally insane when doing it and then medicated to be able to stand trial.
Exactly what I was thinking. He's a paranoid schizophrenic with hallucinations, but they are going to execute him without a plea deal? I didn't think we executed people for being mentally ill, institution for life, sure.
I was thinking this too. Prejudicial to have a guy suffering from paranoid schizophrenia to then be medicated before a jury.
I know I don't understand that either. They seem to do it all the time. Some people are insane without their medications. The fact is they are still insane without their medications. Not that I think any of it was okay.
Typically criminal defendants with mental illnesses are medicated in order to keep them from acting out in court. Andrea Yates murdered her five children in the bathtub of her home in Houston, Texas on June 20, 2001 due to her having a very potent combination of Postpartum Depression and Postpartum Psychosis. Andrea was medicated with an anti-anxiety medication while she was incarcerated at the Harris County Jail awaiting trial. Andrea pleaded Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity; but prosecutors Joseph Owlmby and Kaylyn Williford argued that Andrea was not insane at the time of the murders and knew her actions were wrong. That being said; the prosecution did agree with Andrea's attorney George Parnham in that Andrea had a very long and well-documented history of mental health issues, including multiple suicide attempts. Despite their agreement; the prosecution backed up their claims of Andrea not being insane at the time of the murders and knew her actions were wrong by pointing out these five key factors:
1.) Andrea waited for her husband Rusty Yates to leave for work because she knew he would have stopped her from harming the children.
2.) Andrea locked up the family dog in order to keep it from interfering with her plans.
3.) Andrea locked the doors and windows of the house in order to keep the kids from trying to escape and to prevent the neighbors from stopping her.
4.) Andrea called 9-1-1 after the murders and requested that the police and an ambulance come to her house. She also called her husband at work and said that he needed to come home right away because "something awful happened to all of the kids."
5.) Andrea confessed to the murders at the scene.
Thats cause In an insane world it was the sanest choice
That old man is a hero, I hope he got some kind of award or something like that.
Seems like these shows are mandated to show one mugshot like 25 times throughout each programme.
With the music sting as well
Thanks for the upload!
I have a few issues with this whole situation.
First, I'm almost positive that this wouldn't have happened if people would have done something about this guy a long ass time before the shooting. All these people saying they knew there was something wrong with him, he had weird behaviors, people were scared of him, he had a million guns and ammo, his school kicked him out...he couldn't get a clear MH exam. His parents let his weird behaviors develop and did nothing about it...they let him drop put of high school and drop all his friends, collect guns, they took his car away. I think his parents should have been charged with neglect or something - they were scared and knew he was off and they did NOTHING. They could have taken him to MH a long time before all that, back in middle or high school...when he started acting messed up. Past that and he should have been mental hygiene arrested.
Then, his school only cared when he posted the video about the school being a financial rip off. They only cared about negative publicity that may have influenced someone who saw it to not go there. So, they only cared about if they lost money. That's messed up too. They knew he was messed up prior to that but also did nothing.
Also, it's messed up that there wasnt security there and if there was, they did a shitty job not trying to protect the public...its sad a bunch of old ass people took him down and saved God knows how many, instead of security.
Lastly, its messed up how he wasn't just charged with murder and attempted murder...why they differentiated and said Congress woman and federal employees, etc like they are more important or its more serious than murdering a normal person. A congress woman isn't more important than that little girl who died. Life is life.
At the end of the day, a lot more people have blood on their hands because they let a KNOWN crazy person kill and injure a lot of people because they did nothing. Sad.
Well said
Unfortunately, there are thousands of disturbed people across America who exhibit symptoms as strange or worse than Loughner. Most never attack anyone. Fewer kill any one person. Even fewer commit mass shooting murders. They cannot all be thrown behind bars for the mere possibility they might commit a mass killing, especially if they have never committed a crime. Adults like Loughner cannot easily be 5150'd without a high standard of evidence suggesting they are an immediate threat. Much of his behavior was simply weird, anti-social. Even when they are, institutionalized by 5150, once they are stabilized with medication , they usually get released quite quickly as authorities have no constitutional right to hold them longer. If people could be incarcerated for being socially isolated loners who make bizarre videos, our prison system would collapse from overcrowding and the potential for abuse, false accusations for ulterior motives, would be massive. Your stronger point is that more people could have tried to encourage him to get help, whether he would go along with it or not.
He was 22 his parents shouldnt be charged at all
Blame Republicans. They want crazy people to obtain guns.
By the way, how dare you say others have blood on their hands, maybe your period blood, grosso

Just for clarity and information's sake Ms. Giffords was a US house representative, not a US senator. The speaker said she was a newly elected senator which I know sounds like a trivial error but is like saying someone is a judge when they are a lawyer (but not a judge.) I moved to Tucson in 2005 and I remember this happening and how it shook the entire city. This documentary says some questionable things (such as it taking place in a "downtown" shopping mall -- this Safeway is actually nowhere near downtown and is located much further north in the city in a strip mall about five minutes from where I lived at the time), however the statement of the small-town feel Tucson has is very accurate. When the shooting happened, it was as though the entire city had been sucker-punched in the face. For months, you couldn't go anywhere or talk to anyone without Laughner or the shooting coming up and how outraged, confused and violated people felt. Ironically, it seemed as though the city itself closed ranks and bonded over this tragic event. It's a real eye opener, especially in light of how things feel across the nation in the ensuing years.

I've lived in Tucson my entire life, I've never known anywhere else and all I want to do is scream at the screen, "stop lying!" at all the people who are talking about how nice a place it is to live.
If you’ve never lived anywhere else, how do you know the people there aren’t nice if you have no where else to compare it to?
@@aprilleerose I don't understand your comment. First, if I had said the people aren't nice I would know because I do live here. Second, I didn't say anything bad about the people other than that they are lying every time they say it's a nice place to live. It's not! Not by a long shot.
To describe Tucson as safe and calm, Jared’s friends grew up in a different part of Tucson than I did.
There is always someone shooting in USA and it,s always the same type of guy ...and if you ask people after the shooting They will say they knew he was weird
It’s not illegal to be weird
for some of you...Boot means the trunk.
Having just watched a documentary about flight 93 on 9/11/ 01 the way the public fought the shooter seemed so similar. Almosy as if we've learned to fight back when we're collectively threatened. 😥
There is no way that this murderer is going to spend the rest of his life in prison regretting his deed. He should have had the DP. People were there, people saw what he did. Why did he live???
They keep repeating how the senator got killed, but hardly any talk about all the other people that were killed, almost like they don't count. We always keep hearing how everyone is equal, but it's situations like this that prove that some think that some lives are worth more then others. You can have 400 people die in a plane crash, but if there would only be one celebrity on board that died with them, the news will mostly talk about the poor celebrity that lost his life and forget about everyone else.
Aviation Nut like KOBE
Congress protects its own. It’s not a bad thing. Only 1 congressman, Leo Ryan, has died in the line of duty. We can’t have presidents deaths, congressmen’s deaths etc, be regular deaths. They are not better than us but they do hold positions of power that make them natural targets. The fact a blanket law protects our elected officials and judges, is actually not a bad thing. The child killed may have been a “special circumstance” or “special victim” as well. Yes, everyone is equal but by the jobs people choose, their deaths at the hands of another, is more than problematic. Like killing a police officer. The murder of some people has to be dealt with differently for our justice system to function properly.
LEGALLY PURCHASED
My, think of all the knives, scissors, swords, spears, cars and all the other stuff LEGALLY PURCHASED! I'm gonna start building my bunker right now.
He even had more than one magazine, that's totally unnecessary if you're not in the combat military you know.
@@marcushillerstrom25 Please describe what "the combat military" is...
@@UnknownUser-cn3rv The f**k do I know, I was quoting the idiot in the video.

It restores your faith in goodness hearing about these brave people who either died saving others or risked their lives subduing this dangerous lunatic. If his parents were troubled by his behaviour and knew he had a gun, why didn't they do something about it? Oh, yeah - right to bear arms! Even if you are a lunatic! Good luck with that!
He sounds exactly like those conspiracy theorists nutcases that are now on Parler.
Holy fck i knew it, einstein is alive
I thought so too 😂

This occurred in my hometown, I was living outside of Corpus Christi, TX I didn't know anything about it until after a few hours later my mom sent me a txt msg telling me about the tragedy
Way to make it about you
In 1996 Tasmania Australia suffered the Port Arthur Massacre.
38 people murdered.
The Government did a compulsory buy back of Assault Weapons.
This world is beautiful but extremely evil
Kind of like many women.
Cameron Gage get out your feelings it’s not about you!
Evil is a concept created by humans, ascribed to any types of behaviour that is against the smooth functioning of society.
The world is beautiful, some humans are extremely evil.
There is no goodness, light and beauty without darkness and evil.
They would rather lock them up indefinitely than intervene at the earliest stages of psychotic behaviour. The signs were there to see. Even in prison, he was denied medication for his psychosis until the judge ordered one
Costs more money to intervene. The lack of empathy...
