Despite the fact that all three men were giving interviews and clearly survived I was on the edge of my seat watching this. I can’t even wrap my head around the mental fortitude and sheer survival instinct it would take to survive something like this.
Everyone is talking about the captain and co-pilot, but the engineer fought through the whole fight. Without any break. It really wouldn't have been possible without him
Look up the episode "I'm the problem." This was a successful hijacking. There were no bodies recovered but it was a real challenge for the NTSB and the FBI to figure out.
In the first minute of the attack, all three flight crew were severely injured. With the attacker unharmed, still holding his hammers. At that point, it would seem to be absolutely hopeless. Reversing that fight was incredible. Incredible.
The copilot’s daring maneuvers in spite of being seriously injured, the pilot’s fighting ability to overcome the hijacker, fly the plane/land it, and flight engineer’s heroism to grab the spear gun! Wow this will give any Hollywood thriller a run for its money!! I hope the three pilots were compensated well enough so they can live comfortably forever 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
If I knew I would be on a flight like those from 911 >>> it would have been those 3 that I would have chose to be on the flight with....even if we died anyhow
The fact that they suffered trauma to the brain and were still able to fight back and control the plane is a miracle in itself. Anyone who has had traumatic brain injuries, even minor ones, can tell you that it’s debilitating. Even though they had to retire and give up their passion, they are certified badasses.
This is really one and only incident of its type in aviation history. It's just unimaginable how the co-pilot able to control but also try to injure the attacker with such breath taking maneuvers with such a heavily injured skull. These three guys are really special. I salute them for their neither ever nor never -never quit attitude.
And that's why it's extra heart breaking non of them will fly again. If you want anyone up front it's them. I'll take slight risk of seizure. That's what the FO and AP are for. You think it's a regular day and suddenly you're fighting for you life., performing maneuvers you would ordinarily go to prison for and sustaining life altering, career ending injuries, just trying to do the right thing. If the plan really was to crash into FedEx HQ then those guys saved a lot more than 4 lives. Possibly hundreds.
It’s a bit similar to what happened to United 93 on 9/11. It crashed but there was rolling of the plane and fighting with the hijackers. The crew and passengers who prevented the plane from getting to the intended target were heroes too.
This plane (N306FE) was repaired after this incident and flew daily flights all the way up until the end of last year, retiring as the last MD-10 operated by FedEx. It's sitting in a storage facility right now; I think it should be preserved in a museum.
A agree. These pilots who fought off the hijacker has a great story to tell their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and the next generation to come. ❤😊
A little crazy to be expecting a Plane that had been through that much stress, & DAMAGES to keep running& flying as it did for years but dang, I would not have wanted to ever fly on that plane, Maybe any other plane but not that one, I don't care how much money they put into repairs. But, Apparently the plane proved itself. That plane has a Soul.
The pilot pitching and rolling the aircraft to intentionally disrupt the attacker is something straight out of an action movie, how much more badass does it get?
@@laurenanderson7330 Not really foolish. Pushing the envelope, sure, but not foolish. Planes are designed to have large safety margins, same way a rope rated for 400 lbs can safely hold 440 lbs
@@Historymaker-2001 that plane isn’t meant to be doing anything close to loops and barrel rolls under any circumstances. Nothing short of a miracle it didn’t break up.
I feel so badly for these pilots. They clearly loved to fly and they showed they loved it in this situation they were extraordinary. I’m so sorry that was their last flight they deserved better.
What gets me about this guy isn't just the crime, which is horrific, but the "temporary insanity" he would plead afterward trying to avoid all responsibility for his actions. In prison he would go on to write about how unfair it was that he got a life sentence for his actions, given all the injustice in the world. There is plenty of injustice, but that doesn't excuse the things he did to others. His actions, the way he planned this, could only be described as cold blooded.
Calling that “temporary insanity” is laughable, but I can see how he blames the world for his actions. He was down on his luck through little fault of his own, and being in a echo chamber in his poisonous thoughts for so long led to his actions. He’s a man that the system failed. But the fact that he still hasn’t self-reflected that what he did was heinous really says how lost he is. Justification doesn’t validate actions, and it was his decision in the end to do it.
He was treated with unjustness, but the 3 pilots on board didn’t deserve to go thru any of this - the fact that the crew even survived is astonishing in the first place. If you forgot he was planning to do that on a crew with a female - let’s be honest here if he did that to that other crew the would have been gone for sure there is no way a female could pilot/fight while suffering this bad of a blow to the head.
@@matrioshkaforever7753 I'm not sure, but I think you may be misunderstanding the tone of my comment. I do not think of him as the victim, even though I'm willing to concede both that there is plenty of injustice in the world, especially for black men, and that he himself may have experienced some injustice at points in his life. But he chose to do this horrible thing uncaring of the harm he would cause others and I believe he fully deserves to suffer the consequences of it; I find his inability to take ownership for his actions contemptable, not relatable.
Not only am I giving my hat off to the pilots for fighting off Calloway, but my hat is off to the loaders that put on the cargo and securing it enough to last through this ordeal and keep the plane out of an even greater danger.
All cargo is loaded into containers that fit the contour of the plane. They are on tracks and locked down. It has to be very secure because if the cargo shifts it can bring a plane down.
@@norm4966 All cargo is loaded into containers that fit the contour of the plane. They are on tracks and locked down. It has to be very secure because if the cargo shifts it can bring a plane down. My dad worked at fed ex in memphis when this happened. He said the inside of the cockpit looked like a blood bath and both wings were on the verge of falling off because of the stress put on them.
I saw the plane as it was fighting to stay airborne, I worked at a clinic across the interstate maybe 3 football fields away from the flight path. I can attest that the wings should have come off since I heard the whining that planes make aborting a landing for a go around noise of rapid elevation, heard it first so I was looking when it got past some trees. The plane would go far right and ert, nose up nose down just gymnastics of an airplane, haha A so not normal condition.
@patriot 945 I agree. That plane statistically speaking should have been ripped apart. But it wasn't. I couldn't believe it landed in one piece. They did have the right experience and knowledge but at the same time, that plane isn't made to withstand that type of force and beating. I am amazed that Callaway had the strength to keep fighting as long as he did. These pilots were on their game. If they didn't have the expertise and training and knowledge, doing what they did wouldn't have even been a remote possibility. Just cause you can fly like that doesn't mean the plane can't come apart though.
@@My_Precious_Fun_Lifemaybe because they would have preferred to see a movie made about these pilots instead of the Barbie movie? What does Oppenheimer have to do with the comment in any way?
Maybe those involved never wanted a type of movie based on their traumatic experience. And honestly if I were the Tha would be exactly what I would do. I cannot imagine the horror they experienced
The worst part about all of this is that this attack robbed those 3 men of their ability to ever fly again. I have no doubt they had a good 10 or so years left in their career at least. Not everyone loves their job, but for those that do having it stolen early from them has to be one of the worst.
as sad as it is to vacate and leave their passion for flying and ditch their career due to this, The operating crew showed themselves as invincible and heroic individuals. Well deserved individuals for the 3! Hope their around to this day
My father said the cargo hold had blood on the bulkheads and way up near the top of the fuselage...from the plane rolling while the F.O. was fighting with that lunatic...he still writes letters to people asking to be let out of prison saying he was the only person "really hurt" in the incident...if there is a hell...I hope they keep it hot for him...

I've suffered a brain trauma. And mine was relatively minor compared to the ones the crew sustained. I can personally attest even a minor brain injury can be very traumatic long term and debilitating.
I have a minor brain trauma as well from being hit by a car as a pedestrian. It is amazing how debilitating it can be. It looks like I won't be able to return to my high tech job. Just can't focus and think the way I used to. So I totally get it!
@@kristinwright6632 I know, right? You're walking fine and talking fine, so everyone assumes it was no big deal, but it really does leave a mark on your ability to focus, think quickly, even your reflexes. Much more disabling than people think.
Being a nurse, the trauma they sustained, is mind blowing. To be able to fight off the attacker, remain conscious and land that plane is unbelievable. What amazing men and God bless the surgeon who performed life saving techniques. God had a hand in this story. 🙏🏼
God had no hand in this story. it was just the mental and physical strength of the three pilots. I know that you mean it in a nice way but everytime someone brings god up in something like this it feels like downplaying their heroic actions.
Me and my wife were on the edge of our seats, the most thrilling episode I have ever seen on Mayday. Unbelievable that this actually happened. Better than even Hollywood films. Hats off and salute to the pilots and flight engineer. Hope they got enough compensation to live their lives happily ever after.
I live in Memphis. At the time this happened i had a day job as a nurse in a psych clinic. Our clinic ran parallel with the Fed Ex approach to their runway, The Memphis International Airport is laterally placed and their runway is far removed from Fed Ex. Anyway, I was outside on a break in the back of the building. i grew up on Air Force bases dad was a lifer, so I heard this fed ex plane making high pitch whining sounds as if he were rapidly elevating then dropping altitude. When the plane came in to view that is what I saw, the plan was not gliding on the lift or wind it was being manipulated making side to side front to tail lifting up and down. I jumped up and moved to the front of the building, I knew that wouldn't be far enough if the plane went down as close to us as it was. I listened for a long time and never heard a crash or saw any smoke so got the scoop on the evening news.
These men are true hero's. This is why I would feel safe in an aircraft because of the quality of those who do the flying. Thank God you all survived such an ordeal. I will continue to pray for all pilots around the world who have had to go through such an ordeal. PTL❤
What an utterly repulsive individual ... prepared to end the lives of three men and cause their families great grief because of his desire to protect HIS OWN family. Disgusting. Leaving your last will and testament on your bed before taking the flight would surely alert crash investigators? Using the spear-gun would also alert crash investigators. In a crash you don't usually end up with a spear gun in your chest. He wasn't that smart.
If Calloway's goal was to take control of the plane and fly it into the FedEx hub 9/11 style, there wouldn't have been anyway to distinguish a spearhead injury or a hammer injury from any injury cuz there would have been nothing left. The attack started not too long after takeoff which means the plane was loaded with fuel. The plane would have exploded once it made contact with the hub just like the airplanes exploded when they made contact with the twin towers, the Pentagon and the field. Like the FedEx plane, those 4 planes were long distance flights that were chosen because of the amount of fuel they had to carry to make it their destination. The more fuel the bigger the explosion the bigger the damage!!! This guy planned things out well. What he didn't plan on was the change in crew. Had it been his crew as it was supposed to be, the outcome probably would have been worse then 9/11 cuz according to this episode, one of his crew members was female which for him given his background, he saw as easy to take down. This crew was 3 males; a little harder but in his warped mind, still not a problem. All he had to do was incapacitate them long enough to gain control of the plane so he could carry out his suicide mission and mass killing!!! It blows my mind that he did this to 'benefit' his ex and kids. All he did was scar them for life!!!
@@nohandle1028the plan was fatally flawed from the start: as soon as he left his documents on his bed and when he made changes to his insurance a week before. That alone would make it clear it was planned
The DC10 gets a lot of bad press from several incidents (mostly maintenance procedures being cheaped out on or missed) . This should have got more press about just how amazing the DC10 really was. No other aircraft of that era would have had a chance.
Yeah it was apparently extremely beloved among some pilots. More like an overpowered business jet than a liner. And remember he did these maneuver pretty heavily loaded, an empty airliner can do some crazy stuff but fully loaded is not usually the time to start doing things like approaching the speed of sound or rolling it around etc... I'm sure many would have come apart in the dive. The control surfaces go and then you can't pull out and go supersonic and the aircaft breaks apart.
flying fighter jet manoeuvres in a massive cargo jet, alone, bleeding, and HALF PARALYZED. heartbreaking that he'll never fly again, but what a flight to have as your last. jim tucker you absolute legend
I'd still say that Andy Peterson is the MVP of the whole ordeal. Bro was one who was first hit, he was the one to grab the spear gun to prevent the pilots from getting shot and was technically the first one who took charge to hold Calloway down, all the while he was suffering ringing on his ears almost bleeding to death and was still able to tank most of the damage
I feel like leaving your will and testament on your bed, having changed it right before the flight, would be a red flag for any insurance agent. Likewise, slamming the plane into the FedEx building (which is only speculation, admittedly) would have raised some concerns, regardless of what the flight recorder said.
Don't forget the investments he cashed in just before the flight, to give to his ex wife. Plus, investigators would have found the hammers and spear gun on board. Suspicious all around.
After years of accidents and other mishaps the DC-10 finally got vindicated. To do what amounted to aerobatics on a fully loaded and fully fueled airplane in an attempt to disable hijacker Auburn Calloway was a risk yet great piece of airmanship. The plane was never meant to withstand that successfully. Not to mention that pilot was doing all of this after getting his brains beat out. An amazing miracle to say the least. The plane was repaired and flew for another 28 years.
What this crew went through is beyond horrific. I’m so glad they all survived. I’m sorry they lost so much. I was told about this incident and it was explained that nobody is beyond scrutiny entering ANY FedEx facility. Even for my interview I was met at the door and identified before entering. I’ve never seen a documentary on this and my hat is off to these pilots. They saved lives that didn’t know they needed saving. Absolutely incredible. 🙏🙏🙏
WOW So tragic. The good members of that crew can never fly again. He took that away from them and they suffered injuries and the one pilot has to be on medication the rest of his life. So sad. Thank God though they all fought and got control, even in their condition. True heroes.
Dang! For all 3 pilots to be severely hit with a hammer on the head multiple times and still alive, conscious, mobile and with strength like that to fight with the plane tossing back and fourth and still land is unbelievably amazing. They have great mental and physical strength. Such strong men, all 3 of them. Great Teamwork.
Its just suprising the pilots skill. Pulling dangerous maneuvers while not being able to move the right side of your body or just making fighter jet like maneuvers to land is just amazing. Cheers to the pilots and and inflight engineer

All three suffered neurological damage that took their profession (and clearly, something they also enjoyed doing) away from them, and which has left them all with some level of deficit. What an epic tale of survival. My heart goes out to these three men in their losing the ability to do something they all seemed very passionate about, but I'm happy they made it out alive.
Kudos to the co-pilot and captain for their knowledge flying and knowing what could potentially happen after all those maneuvers and not slowing plane down too fast after reaching and exceeding speed limitaions/maneuvers of this plane. They had previous experience and knowledge, which saved their lives and guided that well-built plane back to the ground safely. Remarkable courage and will to live and overcome that nut case. Luckily, everything fell into place, pun intended.
God blessed these men, for working together, along with having such an unimaginable amount of courage to keep fighting, along with performing the dangerous and almost impossible maneuvers with the plane. I've seen this several times and it really demonstrates strength, resolve and courage. Most of all, it demonstrates the never ending goal of getting the plane to safely land. All new pilots should see this and know their responsibility is not always just flying. Fantastic job.
Being horrible in one case does not mean being bad in the other. There are millions of "bad" husbands/fathers which would never do such lunacy. And many of these insane actions are carried out by "normal" beings, at least outwards.

As a private pilot, I'm amazed by the aviating skills of these pilots under such duress. Mr. Tucker flew that airliner like an F18. Beyond impressive.

@patriot 945 I agree. That plane statistically speaking should have been ripped apart. But it wasn't. I couldn't believe it landed in one piece. Hats off and salute to the pilots and flight engineer. Hope they got enough compensation to live their lives happily ever after.
Crazy how I said the same thing! Hollywood wishes!!!
PTL❤

Leaving your last will and testament on your bed before taking the flight would surely alert crash investigators? Using the spear-gun would also alert crash investigators. In a crash you don't usually end up with a spear gun in your chest. He wasn't that smart.
Not to mention he thought one would be a younger smaller female that he could have taken out quicker(potentially)
I agree. He may have been an affirmative action student to be able to get into Stanford.
Well they average about an 80 IQ so this is hardly surprising.

Those three engines came in handy.

I feel like leaving your will and testament on your bed, having changed it right before the flight, would be a red flag for any insurance agent. Likewise, slamming the plane into the FedEx building (which is only speculation, admittedly) would have raised some concerns, regardless of what the flight recorder said.
Oh well psychos family won't get the insurance anyways as he won't die in a work related accident he really screwed himself and them
Yes that us what i think too. the insurance would not have paid out as it would be too suspicious all round.

What an incredible group of men. Thanks for your heroism in not only saving your own lives, but who knows what on the ground!
I praise the reenactment team. Phenomenal work.
Good point ! ! ! Obviously they couldn't ask the traumatised survivors to re-enact the whole scary episode for RUclips . . . . . .
The three men who were attacked, plus the plane are all legends. May God continue to bless those men.
Amazing the plane didn't suffer structural failure. Can't beat the old iron. DC8 's were tough as well.
What an amazing story. Nail biter. May God bless the three pilots. They are true heroes.
Fabulous fearless and
Fabulously trained , selflessly terrifically trained pilots on this flight such a pitty and pilots were not enough to cope in the end.of this trauma
Pilots like no bet on 111ter, pair excilance
I bit all 5 nails on right hand watching that
That actor has me in CHILLS. He definitely gave emmy worthy. Working in the aviation industry, oh my goodness... My eyes are opened to all the dangers and hazards aviation faces.
These are some of the coolest, most amazing humans on the planet and I hope they know that. They obviously didnt deserve what they went through but damn did they claw through it and came out looking like absolute badasses
Clear rational thinking and exceptional piloting skills to distract the killer and landing an overweight cargo jet with no injury or equipment loss is stellar !! 😇😇😇
Man, I would be honored to share a couple of beers and a night with these pilots. Especially the guy that had the controls. To fly a plane of that size in those maneuvers is amazing. He took that plane to the edge of ripping itself apart. Just amazing, truly, and the pilots not in control and being thrown around but still fighting. Every man on this plane is a fighter. The attacker isn't a man, just a coward who couldn't just end his life but had to evolve other innocent people.
I'm was an RTD for fedex express on that night. I remember sitting at the TYS ramp in knoxville while listening to the news do a play by play. I'm So thankful everyone was okay. These pilots received the highest award to be given aviation and a certain company leader wouldn't go to the awards Banquet because it was union Affiliated.
How disgusting of the no shows.
Not Fred Smith?
Oh my god seriously?! What utter f**king pettiness.
I'm surprised that a film hasn't been made on this occasion yet.
No you're not
Amazing job, true heroes that managed to beat back such a suicidal attack and still get to land the plane. God bless them.
Wow! That was crazy and I’m so glad all the pilots and engineer survived that ordeal.
These men are such amazing heroes! It's mind-boggling how brave and determined they were. These are the kind of men who fought in wars and defended our country. I stand in awe of them. God bless them and their families.
I've seen this several times and it really demonstrates strength, resolve and courage. Most of all, it demonstrates the never ending goal of getting the plane to safely land. All new pilots should see this and know their responsibility is not always just flying. Fantastic job.
I'm familiar with the story, but you presented it so well that I found myself at the edge of my seat.
40:32 It doesn't take a psychologist to know this lunatic probably wasn't the greatest husband.
Right? He wanted his wife to have to live with guilt of a mega disaster death toll. Psychopath
Yeah beat his wife and kids so they ran from the hood rat that is a psycho
Calloway could have been a narcissist who could not accept that he wasn't given a better job.
Being horrible in one case does not mean being bad in the other.
There are millions of "bad" husbands/fathers which would never do such lunacy.
And many of these insane actions are carried out by "normal" beings, at least outwards.
The story is incredible. The film is a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing, it kept me literally on the edge of my seat during the entire presentation. Thanks.
I agree with you! In fact, I’d say the actors in these reenactments are better than most of today’s Hollywood “A-list” actors, especially better than the spoiled, talentless nepo-kids. They do a fantastic job.
