In August 1980 a sniper gunned down two young black men that were strolling through the park with two white women. This case was suspected to be a civil rights violation, bringing FBI to investigate the crime. What followed was the arrest, trial and conviction of white supremacist serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin.
Real FBI cases are recounted through reenactments and interviews, due to the sensitive nature of the show, viewer discretion is advised.

This guy was an idiot who did everything he could to get caught: used his own car, bragged to strangers about his crimes, used the same gun, didn't travel far, used his real name, etc. Yet it took the cops that long to arrest him all three times? Then the DA tried to stop the FBI from going to trial by saying it was a "circumstantial" case, when there was a mountain of evidence against him! Let's face it, if not for the FBI stepping in to oversee the investigation, the kentucky judicial system would have happily let this guy walk.

It was the KentuckY police (Boone County, specifically) that first arrested him and with that arrest, despite his escape which was extremely unfortunately and b/c they only thought he had an arrest warrant for skipping out on a hotel bill had they known more they certainly would have handcuffed him and done more to secure....regardless no excuse for letting an arrested man get away...
NEVERTHELESS, it was the smart thinking of the KentuckY Cop that broke all this open by checking the plates of the guy stupid enough to complain, checking for outstanding warrants, then arresting him that broke this case open...So you're welcome.

Why is it that FBI officers are always referred to as “special agents?” Don’t they have “ordinary” agents?
Special Agents of the FBI primarily handle or assist criminal investigations. They're generally called "special" because they can be given the authority to arrest criminals or conduct criminal investigations across state lines. What could be considered an "ordinary" agent, or secret agent, at the FBI is typically considered an asset and usually they don't technically "work" for the FBI. They're the various moles, or spies, the organization has in operations of interest that can relay intelligence and assist in counter-intelligence operations.

It is pretty easy to take a door off it's hinges as back then most hinges were pin style hinges where you just pull the pin out from the top and you take the door off, would take about 10 seconds if the pin wasn't to gunked up or painted.
They guy had half an idea on how electrical systems work and pretty much jumped the lift, most people with a trade background or an interest in electronics could also work it out.

The 1st time they did not know he was a murderer. The only thing the arrest warrant was for was skipping out on a hotel bill; hence, why they didn't have him handcuffed and in a cell which allowed him to escape.

It did not make any contraversal statments. All ot did was document the victim the killer and what happened. A few days ago they deleted the account. I was born in Cincinnati and grew-up in Northern Kentucky and am really curious where those two boys were murdered and would like to pay my respects there. I am also curious about what hotel they 1st caught him in in Florence, Ky, as I am very familiar with it as well.

Franklin was executed at the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre, Missouri on November 20, 2013. The execution began at 6:07 AM CST and he was pronounced dead at 6:17 AM.

What I'm appalled with are the detective cock-ups. I do understand that it is only a depiction video of the actual events but there almost seems to be lethargy in the way dangerous criminals are treated. Dangerous criminals will always be on the lookout to escape and I think that the cops need to work hard in covering even the slightest possibility in every potential arrest.
I've watched a lot of documentaries on criminals. And it seems that older detectives were near clueless. They made tons of mistakes. But these days, technology basically promotes extremely high success rates at all times when capturing fugitives. And federal funding of police helps keep them properly detained and guarded.
@@tannerholmes1587 I absolutely agree with you but it's not just the cops it's also the justice system that needs to revamp their thinking in a collaborative way with law enforcement. Often I see a criminal getting away because search warrants to search their houses are not easily obtained or delayed and so the criminals are released. If they are dangerous murderers, this could mean additional people dying or the criminal escaping. The people issuing the warrants need to base their assumptions on the crime and if the crime is murder in any form and a danger to society then all suspects need to be thoroughly whetted, incarcerated, and then released one by one if they are innocent. If the murder spree stops while this activity is ongoing then you know you have your killer and you've checked their homes by that time. The law must favor society more than it favors criminals. There is no perfect system in a world of insanity but you do the best you are paid to do. I understand they are all professionals but I see the cock-ups from time to time.

Someone driving through town would not have known the name or number of the first girl he called. It is someone who knew her through her family etc. that ultimately led him to Kelly. The person who reports finding a body is suspect # 1. Family and friends are the next suspects in line because most murders are commited by people who are known to the victim. The hardest crimes for the police to solve are serial killers because the victim has no link to the murderer. Everybody thinks they could have found the perp before the police; but, just give it a try. You wouldn't be as good as the professional detectives.
