Note: Be careful with the comments on this post suggesting multiple and different forks that have done nothing aside from update their names on existing code. As I shared in the video, that's exactly what's happening and it's disheartening to see that directly in my own video comments are forks being shared that have not actually accomplished anything. Be patient, wait, and good things will come.
FYI, switch is not the first time there has been "current gen" emulation. The entire reason we know emulation is legal is because of the bleem case. Bleem was a PS1 emulator released in 1999 and closed in 2001 pretty much the peak of PlayStations sales for that generation
Actually, one of the forks has progress where it can be compiled for macos/android/Linux and windows and around 12 bugfixes with just 2 devs mainly contributing. So we will see what they can do and if they keep at it.
I think without them making ToTK work prior to release for gold members they would have let it go. Yuzu made money converting free to Patron members. ToTK was Nintendos baby they had been working on since switch launch.
RE Yuzu charging on Patreon, the current legal precedent based on the 1999 cases of Sony vs Connectix and Sony vs Bleem were based on commercially sold emulators for the at the time current gen Playstation. Yuzu being a current gen emulator and charging for it in any capacity has precedent. It's not a first. Nintendo would not have necessarily won. What they could have done however is repeatedly sue Yuzu, lose, and sue again until Tropic Haze are worse off than they were from the settlement. Sony did exactly that to Bleem. They lost 3 court cases to Bleem but Somy could afford the cost of the legal battle. Likewise Nintendo have deeper pockets than Tropic Haze. The US legal system is an unbalanced corporation biased mess.
Atlus just absolutely *always* double dip on fans and make anyone who buys the new game into a sucker when they inevitably release an "updated" version. Or a DLC that's not actually new content, just stuff they held back and cut from the full game
great to hear that you will continue to use yuzu and citra as benchmarking tools. Great vid as always. Please keep us op to date regarding that Odin 2 ambilight feature.
Jelos still works just fine. Just like arkos does. I'm not sure what people think these still needed added. It isn't a terribly big deal for people that already had it installed. Bigger deal for people looking to buy one if they don't put the last build back up
@@kreatur3able Yepp that's my issue... Waiting for my rgb10 max 3 to arrive in 2-3 days, great timing for taking down jelos... We still have JELOS we just don't have the support from the main team (On certain devices). You can compile it and use it for yourself. You're just not going to have all Bells and Whistles under the hood that comes with JELOS.
My theory for the timing is since they (apparently) delayed the release of the switch 2 they decided to do this to be able to get more revenues from their game sales. Maybe the emulator was also getting too good for their liking.
If Nintendo was confident that they would win the case against Yuzu, they didn't have to settle either. However, there is some indication that Nintendo had evidence of copyright violations of members of the Yuzu LLC personally. This may or may not be true, but, regardless, the settlement lets the developers of Yuzu not have any personal responsibility for any copyright infringement they may or may not have participated in while the LLC is dissolved and its assets go to Nintendo. Nintendo isn't anxious to go forward with a case about this either. If they proceeded, even if Yuzu lost, it may have been just on one of the grounds that they claimed in the suit, and that could have lead to clearer rules of what the emulator makers could do legally. Nintendo would rather generate general fear than clarify where the lines are. Nintendo knew that they had a very good chance to force a settlement, but that doesn't mean they knew they would win in court. If they were confident about that, they wouldn't have offered or accepted a settlement.
Nintendo did what they had to do. Switch emulation was good, but it was still not as good as the physical retail version. Not to mention it lacked all of the online goodies.
This is not the first time emulation was emulating the current generation. Bleem was emulating PlayStation while PlayStation was still the current generation... At the end of the PS1 generation, sure, but still it was the current generation nonetheless.

"Newscast Topic" Not really something that you missed as it hadn't happened yet when this was filmed; a few hours ago Stenzek announced that he's getting out of the Android emulation game. This means that Duckstation is quacking its swan song. Sadly we can't put the blame on Nintendo for this one. Google put in some new Play Store rules for developers that have recently went into effect, and according to Stenzek himself they are unpalatable. It never rains, but it pours. ●●● IRT the retrenchment of JELOS, hopefully this means more Android powered handhelds on the market. It makes a lot of sense for affordable handhelds. I own a generic Chinese Android tablet and it'll run Genesis, SNES, and PS1 like a champ. Basically everything that people buy cheapo handhelds to play, it'll play very well, plus it has the benefit of being able to run some light Android games. ●●● I've been meaning to ask; what's your watch?
