do you think this might apply to second gens also? I replaced the alternator didn't help, have a 2000 that only when its cold (anything under 45-50F degrees) it will charge at 14 volts for a few seconds then drop to 13 for a few more, then back to 14 volts and so on, after idling for 10-15 minutes then drive does it stabilize at 14 volts, maybe after it warms up the sensor is within adjustment and needs slightly adjusted?
@@whatsBF3 I'm much less familiar with second gens but what you are describing sounds like it's just the grid heaters cycling which is completely normal. They will cycle and cause the voltage to fluctuate until the truck gets up to temp.
@@decentgarage hmm okay, when i got the truck this year in february, they had taken off the ground for grid heater probably for a reason i put a turbo and 150 over injectors in never had a problem starting when it was negative outside so might just unhook it so it doesn't kill alternator flocculating unless you think it will be fine, i'm pretty mechanically inclined but not huge into diesels 🤷♂️
@@whatsBF3 If it is the grid heaters cycling (which I bet it is) it is not harmful at all and I would just leave it. Most people who are new to 12 valves see that and think there is something wrong but it is totally normal.
One thing I like on my 2013 Super Duty is the manual/automatic hubs. They work without locking them in 90% of the time but if you ever have a brain fart and get completely immobilized stuck in 2 wheel drive, you can lock the hubs manually where regular automatic hubs would just leave you stuck. Congrats on your first gen. I can tell you really like it.
Sorry Vbelt but I’m calling Bullshit. I am a diesel truck dealer and there is no humanly possible way you paid $500 for that 1st gen. If it started and ran I would pay $4-$5000 for it
Nice to see the boys are there to help you get these projects done. The sneak peak was cool 😎, cant wait to see more, thanks for sharing Sam and the boys👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
I got an 01 Silverado from my grandpa. He bought it brand new. Only 160k miles. Been wanting it for years and he finally gave it to me. Rust free in great shape. Kept cutting off. New alternator relays some other stuff. Crank shaft censor. Now she runs fantastic. Would love to have a nice square body. Sorry I’m a gm guy but do love an old dodge. I remember riding in the back of my grandpas to the farm when I was a kid. Maybe late .70s early 80s model. Remember helping him spray paint the bed one time
You would be surprised. Try to find a smaller car dealer that is willing to sell trade-ins to the public before auctioning them off. I have bought many a running vehicle that have absolutely no issues for ~$500, including older pickups like this one. Most trade ins get auctioned for pennies on the dollar that they are worth because the dealer doesn't think it worth the time to fix it themselves.
Yeah I don't believe half the stuff he says and his titles are always clickbaity. That truck is rust free and 4wd drive. That is a 7k truck any day of the week no matter what the miles are.
I HAVE A 92 4x4 5 sod it’s same truck as this only paint is bad I have offers every time I drive it, last offer was 15..000 cash ,another guy offered a 2011 4x4 auto Cummins even swap ,seems everybody want these truck more than the new ones
Love the opening makes me laugh every time you do that. Can’t believe you got that truck for that it’s a hell of a awesome find. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
The first several years I was in the military we had a fleet of 1990 Dodge 2500 bobtail trucks with 12 valves. They were used, abused, rough and tough but always got the job done. All were 2wd which 4wd would of been nice but oh well.
Regarding your charging problem, install a 70\80's vintage standard voltage regulator and bypass the factory wiring running the charge wire direct to the battery ( min. of a 6 ga. ) and add a volt gauge to monitor the charge voltage. Keep the fuseable link to protect the chassis wiring. ,
I got a 93 Dually ext cab that belonged to my Grandpa. Got a Cummins out of a 2006 going in mated to a Eaton 10 speed. Waiting on Knaphiede to get my Aluminum Flatbed done. Ready for paint and 22 inch Alcoas

This sure would be a great truck to restore to 'almost' original condition😄! No matter what you decide, it is definitely another awesome addition to your fleet - enjoy!!
Put an external voltage regulator in it. ECM in 92-93 have internal voltage problems. I can work on that inside and out with multiple parts trucks. Good score man.
Ad an external voltage regulator and fuse block to swap the fusible links, manual button for grid heater and run a cable to shut off the fuel delete the fuel shut off solenoid so it’ll stay running with no power. These are what I did to eliminate a few “dodge” problems nothing beats a Cummins
There’s this local guy I have on Snapchat who paid $500 for a running and driving 1st gen. Only thing missing was a bed and half the cab 😂😂. Buddy has it posted for $3500
To have a shop like that is a dream. I also have 2 12 valves and to 08s. Any recommendations of locations to start up a shop( or buy property) like that?
That era the voltage regulation for the alternator was PCM controlled. Back in the 90s I use to convert them over to the old external regulator that you mount to the firewall. It's been awhile but if I remember right the green wire at the alternator is the wire you run to the external regulator and bypass the PCM. I'm going by 25 years ago memory so check a wiring diagram. On edit: I see the tach signal was missing. You can also check alternator by full fielding the alternator with the green wire.
Happy thanks giving from Canada 🇨🇦 you lucky son of a gun I would love that truck would be cooler as a dually but I love it either way good for you you were just saying in a video I watched were you lined up all your trucks but a first gen good for you it’s beautiful lol
Nice truck at a nice price. I have a twin to it here in PA. Dad bought. It new with the getrag 5 speed. When the bearings went out a little over 100 k swapped to the nv4500. Every time I take it out someone wants to buy it. I started telling them the price
$500 bucks for a first gen cummins? Are you nutz? I just looked online in my area and the average, THE AVERAGE, for a running driving example is $10,250.
Pro tip guys: If you have your insurance fixing anything on your Cummins, make sure to claim everything you can! Made the mistake recently of telling mine that they didn't need to include some things on my 3rd gen. I was worried about them totalling it out... In the end, they told me it didn't even get close to totalled and I can't add that stuff back on 🤬 If they tell you it's officially totalled, then tell them to take things off (cosmetic of course) until it's just under totalled!
A few months ago there was one at a local auction that went for 4500. A dealer bought it, had a Maaco paint job put on it and sold it for 12K. Dammit I should have bought that sucker.
I recently saw a '92 at $3,500 which needed new paint and tires but it was 200 miles away and the seller said it was probably best to trailer it - cracked tires, so I passed. It had the NV4500 five speed.
get a borgstead steering shaft on amazon, theyre way better than stock. mine had worse slop than yours. i did a steering box, the arm under the steering box, and a steering shaft.

It means the old owner was done with the truck and had bigger stuff to worry about. They didn’t know what the issue was and they couldn’t figure it out. So they got rid of it for cheap.
@@VBELTandSON So in other words, they did the typically Umerican thing and let something go, not doing their research and realizing that they should have asked more, considering the more recently discovered value in these trucks, due to their simplicity, efficiency and reliability, whether theirs was running or not. Nope. They did away with those in 91.5 and installed a computer on them, mounted inside the driver's side fender. Computer controls the charge. Seen plenty of people throw their hands up and install a external regulator. Just have to know which wires to tie into. First time i heard of the crankshaft sensor fixing the problem. Mine is early 91. Went through more than a few regulators. Finally ran a ground wire to the last one i replaced. Been going on 10 yrs with the same regulator.
It’s simple to turn a $500 truck into a $10,000 truck, spend $15,000-$20,000 on it and 6 months labor.
