@@MoneyBadgerProductionsI kind of want to just fix the rockers and cab corners then do a wipe on clear coat. I’m weird and like the old faded paint. Could possibly do a full paint job someday though. Did you got with the 3200 gov spring? Looking to do that, fuel pin, and exhaust.
@@RealSteelFabrications i am running a clipped 3800 spring in my truck. Very responsive, my truck is manual though. Not sure how happy the autos will be with more power. Apparently heat is the big auto killer
Experienced Dodge Cummins truck owner here the clicking that drops your voltage is the grid heater in the intake. It’s heating up the incoming air as it passes through the heated grids. The clicking you hear is the sound of it cycling on and off. It’s suppose to do that, and it’s supposed to drop your voltage intermittently like that when the engine is cold. When you drive it and warm the engine up it will stop using the grid heater as much since it’s not needed as much when it’s at operating temperature. Your truck has the BOSCH VE injection pump, and you’re gonna want to pull the front timing cover plate off and fix the killer dowel pin. On 12 valve 6BT Cummins engines which is the model they used in the Dodge trucks back then, there is a dowel pin that sits in a hole behind the camshaft gear. Over time with vibration, it is known to wiggle out and fall down out of the hole. If it does this it will likely land between the camshaft gear, and the injection pump gear and it will explode the whole timing case apart. All you have to do is take a piece of thin metal that’s flat drill a hole big enough to fit the bolt that’s right beside the dowel pin through, and use that bolt to bolt the little plate down so that the plate covers the dowel pin. That plate will prevent the dowel pin from falling out of its hole and destroying the whole timing case. Then reseal the case and bolt the case cover back on. That will save the whole engine and save a lot of frustration and disappointment.
@ depends on who had it last. Usually people that know about it if they’ve done they’ll tell you so you don’t have to open it up. If the truck has been sitting a while then I’d say likely not. Also check for blow by. All you have to do is while the engine is idling open the oil fill cap and set it on the filler tube and see how much it dances. If does a lot and there’s a thin smoke coming out then she’s wore pretty good and a rebuild will be in the near future if it doesn’t and there’s no smoke then she’s still good with a lot of life left in her. It still sounds pretty healthy and strong, so I’d predict it should have minimal blow by. Some is normal on a diesel, it’s just the nature of the beast you just don’t want a lot. Hope this helps it’s an awesome truck from my birth year I’m looking to get one myself from my birth year I drive a 2019 Ram 2500 with the 6.7 Cummins in it now and I’ve owned 2 second gen’s and a 3rd Gen of these trucks. The 5.9 Cummins is so time proven by this point, they’re unmistakably the best Diesel engine ever put between the frame rails of a pickup truck. You can’t kill them. It’s an industrial grade engine, they put them in so much stuff back then. Bulldozers end loaders, graders, generators, you name it.
Interesting. Didn’t even think about that. Guess that’s what the clicking was. It hasn’t done that anymore since though which is odd. Thanks for the info!

voltage is jumping because when the trucks cold, the grid heater turns on and off pulsing the voltage until it warms up. totally normal on a diesel. 🙏🏻
If you continue to have a random no start, the problem is that there is a o-ring under the fuel heater that needs to be replaced. My 1992 had that problem. To replace that o-ring, remove the fuel filter, then double nut the stud that the filter screws on and remove (don't use the slot and try and unscrew, you'll damage the stud). The fuel heater will come off and there's the o-ring. When this o-ring leaks, you loose your fuel prime and the vehicle won't start. That's why the guy you bought it from probably sold it. I bought a Dorman 82560 o-ring assortment kit from O'Reily's and it has the o-ring you need.
When you first started the truck after the new alternator the grid heater will cycle until the truck warms up some that’s why the voltage was jumping around for a while.
Ya, didn’t even think about that. Hasn’t done it again tho, which it’s been even colder. It has some odd electrical stuff going on tho. Dang Dodges lol
@@RealSteelFabrications If it didn't have electrical issues, it wouldn't be a Dodge!! The PAperformance alternator is the best thing you can put on the pre-PCM controlled charging systems.
Nice truck, these d-series trucks tend to leak from the drivers side kick panel cowl that's where the water tends to come in from. Good thing to check under the carpet.
Love this channel with you and your dad. I bought my son a similar truck earlier this summer. '93 D250 5.9 Cummins with almost the same mileage. Such an awesome truck. I'm sure you know by now, but if you haven't already; check that killer dowel pin! Plenty of videos for KDP fixes online, and a cheap fix for a potentially catastrophic problem. Cool video! The only thing "junk" about those external voltage regulators is cheapo knockoffs, bad grounds and folks just not understanding what they're working with.
13:19 the non intercooled trucks ran a different style fan hub. The intercooled truck fan hub is shorter and the pulley is in a different location. A non intercooled belt will be too short for a intercooled fan hub.
Get rid of the factory wiring to the alternator and just run 1 thick gauge wire to the positive terminal.
