  • In this video I answer a question that has long been debated amongst fellow mini owners, On longer flights does setting a manual 2.4Ghz channel on your DJI mavic mini before take off give a better range and stronger signal than leaving it on auto? Check out the video to see what happens!

    Nice and great video. I also have this drone, but never flight over 300m high or 2000m far. Most of our areas are hills, very danger!
    Once dropped down due to lost signal and strong wind from 200m h, few times hit buildings and hard surfaces, but not damaged...
    And again, once sleeping under the deep river for 15mins, still good and fly fly fly till now!
    Its miracle! I do not know how good is this DRONE!

Although a lot of people hate it because is such a tiny bird, but it has the capability of flying and handling like a big boy. Thanks sooo much for sharing. I'm fairly certain channels can't change during the flight in Auto Mode despite what they've told you mate. Auto Mode just means it selects what it believes is the best channel pre-flight. Kinda pointless if you ask me when wifi interference can vary wildly during a flight depending on your flight path.

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  4 года назад +1

      I absolutely agree with you, I can only go by what I was told by DJI that channels CAN change during flight but all the evidence I have seen... And now tested is that manual channel gives a better range anyway so I have found. Thanks for the comment it's all appreciated

    One thing to note. In 2.4ghz there's only 3 channels that not overlapping each other. Channels 1, 6 and 11. All other channels over lap each other. Not mean maybe nothing middle of country side, but never know.

    Another great test. I'm always a bit afraid when you take it to the limit, cause, unlike other testers, you have no safe spots to land (in case the battery has reached its limit, for example)...
    Noticed that, after all the testing and comparisons between the p mode and s mode, you ended up using p mode for these tests and didn't even comment why. Was it the thing we spoke about, regarding the its life time (how many charges they would last)?
    Not sure if you have already another project in hands, but a friend that lives in a big busy town as raised a problem that I haven't antecipated: despite the fact that he has a CE version, he only flies in 5,8GHz. That's because WiFi traffic is so heavy, that he gets nowhere in 2,4GHz and even in 5,8GHz, his flights are very limited. He uses the parabolic reflectors (and fcc hacked mode) to increase the length and I suggested the modified yagis, to achieve a better range, but that raised the question of how far can one go in 5,8GHz, so... when will you test it? :‐)
    You could do the same tests you just did, in the 5,8GHz mode (with parabolics and 5,8 yagis... the x-yagi are better, but only found them in the USA, so they'd take forever, for you to have a chance to test those).
    Take care :-)

      Carlos! Thank you for your comment and there is one simple answer! This video was done at the same time as my lost connection / para vs yagi video! but I had other videos on the go and delayed this one therefore this was BEFORE I figured out that flying in sport mode was more efficient. I have a new video dropping tomorrow night testing aluminium / brass and copper yagi's and on that video (recorded yesterday) I fly out in sport mode as per our conversation. I will at some point test out the 5.8, I need to get a set of 5.8 yagis and test them against the parabolics. Appreciate your comment and feedback as always!

    One thing I've been wondering.. if you set it to say channel 2 because it isn't used at your location, what if you fly it 1km away but then Channel 2 is heavily populated with traffic. You would potentially suffer a lot of signal issues but IF what DJI say is true and it switches channels around in auto, this could possibly help out. Did DJI confirm if it will switch between 5.8 and 2.4 mode in flight, or does it stick to whatever band it decided before take off?

    Great video. I have a question: what do you think would happen if you put the drone in auto mode and use 2.4ghz yagi on one antenna and 5.8ghz on the other one? Does this even make sense? Thanks

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  4 года назад +1

      Hi and thanks for the comment. Basically there would be no point in doing this in auto mode, when you take off the frequency is locked in, according to DJI the channel itself can change with the frequency but not the frequency itself. So if you took off in 2.4ghz it stays there even in auto and the same for 5.8! I fully see why you are asking but unfortunately it won't do anything beneficial, once in flight you need to use the correct yagis for the frequency on both antennas. Hope this helps

    My drone is Mavic Mini CE Version
    I just want to ask this, when it comes to select the transmission manually, how to choose the best channel ? I still don't fully understand about that, about green bars, should i choosing the highest or the lowest one ? And should i choose a bar that has no red bar around it ? Any more explanation about this channel selection thing ?

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  3 года назад

      So, you want to be choosing a green bar, and you want it to be as LOW as possible. The main channels are 1,6,9 so ideally you want to be using one of those , and yes you are correct try and use one where there is no red bar next to it. I hope this helps you.

    Great info’s!! Is it true that in manual transmission it is possible to lose control over the drone as the Chanel might become unstable? My drone was once carried away to one side on its own and that’s what the seller ( dji retailer) told me. That in manual transmission, there are chances for the drone to fly away from our control because of the unstable chanel in manual transmission. So is it true?

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  3 года назад +1

      No I wouldn't say that was true at all, in fact you are giving the drone a chance to have a better connection by picking a manual channel ! I did a video recently in how to fix bad range on the Mavic mini and showed that the drone picked a high interference channel in auto mode!

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  4 года назад +1

      Hi, sorry the the delay! I don't have a video specifically, however, the red means high interference on that channel and the green means less, you want to pick the bar which is a LOW as possible, its easy to think the bars represent signal strength but they dont they are interference, you want to select the most stable ie not moving up and down and the one which is the LOWEST. 2.4ghz is more subject to interference but gives a longer range, 5.8ghz is less susceptible but gives a shorter range! I can make a video explaining all this if you would benefit from it :) hope this helps

    Your screen shows that you are directing your signal 45 degrees away from the drone, you are not facing the antenna's in the direction of flight you are literally standing sideways to where it is flying away from you - why do this? Was this just a bad oversight and making the reception pointless? This sounds pretty trolly and critical I know, but I would have thought it is an important thing not to overlook. Getting these tests right depends on very sound fundamentals. pretty pointless doing these practical tests if the theory is flawed to begin worth, sorry but just my penny's worth.
