      This is exactly the case ! More and more people struggle at even a 100m at times I see because they do not understand how they work properly, now these drones in the UK especially can be flown in urban areas and close to people this makes the situation a bit more serious so hopefully this helps whoever sees it! 😊

    Great performance from the Super Yagis my wife bought me for Christmas, so thanks Gavin. I thought it might help your subs to know how they work and perform best:
    They may not look much, but are parasitic reflector and director elements which work with the existing driven element on your controller to form the array, cut to resonant lengths and spaced harmonically along a boom.
    They only take a couple of seconds to deploy as an effective answer to attenuation when flying low above wet trees or fog, near metal structures, or through wi-fi interference (or at extended range).
    The parasitic elements increase sensitivity to the downlink signal, and directivity by focussing the uplink beam. In 3-d, the signal strength has roughly the shape of a single-scoop ice-cream cone, about 50° wide with its axis - where the signal is strongest - along the boom. There is some leakage of signal to the sides, but almost no signal more than 45° from the axis or behind the reflector elements - so the beam is really narrow.
    The beam is polarised, so it will perform very poorly if the drone (which has monopole antennae that mainly radiate and receive horizontally) is more than 45° from the plane of the controller. It will perform poorly if the drone is on its side relative to the controller. So yagis are unsuitable for FPV drones. If the drone is close to being above or below you, you will lose signal and have to flip the yagi elements off and point the controller at the drone in the usual way to regain the C2 (Command and Control) link.
    The final consideration is selectivity. The spectrum analysis diagram (seen in Gavin's video) is probably not measuring the video downlink, but the Noise to Signal Ratio for C2. It is not clear whether that is for the uplink or downlink, nor whether the depicted interference is measured at the drone or the controller - or compiled from both.
    Normally, Auto selects the best channel for C2, but if the link is lost my understanding is that the controller and drone hop to a channel with a workable N to S Ratio (Gavin thinks otherwise, btw, but my understanding from a DJI article on Ocusync is that it just improves the controller image for FPV by dynamically changing baud rate and synchronising screen resolution and reducing interference by orthogonal spacing of side-bands). IMO, manual selection would prevent channel hopping, so it would normally be a bad idea.
    BUT:
    A yagi array is tuned to a specific carrier, and is much less efficient for other frequencies, so selecting the channel to which the yagi is tuned will give a much stronger C2 signal.
    So if Gavin is right, you will need the yagis in place and pointing at the drone when manually selecting the channel to see which is best. If I am right, Auto selection will find the best channel in flight - when it needs to - anyway.
    Summary:
    Yagis amplify uplink and downlink;
    They are tuned for a specific channel;
    A yagi beam is only about 50° wide;
    Point the yagi at the drone if manually selecting a channel - or just leave it on auto selection;
    Don't use yagis if the drone is overhead or beneath you, they make the link worse if they are not used close to the horizontal plane.
    I hope this is helpful.

    Wow that was alot to take in but you have done extensive testing with these and I can say being a mini 1 owner say your absolutely spot on. As you said if you fly further there is also a chance of not being able to return home which could be completely embarrassing 🤦‍♂️. Take 5 mins to Understand your transmission set up, and things just get a whole lot better with the mini.

    Thank you Gavin...I've learned a lot from you. I'm really new to the world of drones. I actually purchased a Mavic Mini combo pack from a work colleague who was upgrading to a bigger drone. I got it really cheap and it was in perfect condition...I got it mainly to take out whilst mountain biking in the moors since it's so small it fits in my backpack perfectly. I've actually had it a few weeks before I had a go at flying it because I wasn't that bothered...Since my first flight...I just want to fly it all the time and if it's good to fly (UAV Forecast) I will fly it...I love it!

One little tip - UAV forecast is a good guide however airdata UAV app is actually better and you can sync it with DJI fly so you can see all of your flights in s lot more detail - the weather reporting on that all is actually a bit more accurate than uav forecast also. Hope that helps!

    • @GAVINHR

      Hi there! Yes all the information is applicable for the mini SE HOWEVER range extenders such as will not have the same effect, you see in the US you get the higher levels of FCC power and a much more powerful 5.8ghz output, basically meaning that I would advise at this stage a simple set of parabolic reflectors for about $10 at this stage and see how you get on as those should be more than enough for you, fix it on a 5.8 channel and you should get a very good signal

      @Ivan Jdrakov Lower frequency radio waves are less attenuated, less prone to dead-spots from destructive interference from reflections, and skip over obstacles better. So you can get a workable signal in the face of more interference and at greater distance with a low frequency, but a higher frequency can carry more data. Radio always involves some trade-off of factors affecting workability, so the selection can seem counterintuitive.

      The thing is that 2.4ghz is very very proune to interference in the City where I live. When I set my Mavic Mini to 2.4ghz I get about 50m to 100m maximum distance flying from my balcony! If I use 5.8ghz I'm able to get to 250m even 300m!

      2.4ghz can't be FCC Hacked, but 2.4ghz with parabolic reflectors gives me not much better results than 2.4ghz without reflectors..

      @@ivanjdrakov1957 I see what you mean. Flying from a balcony in a city, you probably have thousands of Wi-Fi emitters within your operating range, including above and below you.
      The ones giving you a problem are likely to be very close to your balcony, signal decay being non-linear. Many of them will be at fixed locations, or habitually used in one place. That gives you an opportunity to find a dead-spot where interference from a transmitter is cancelled out by reflection or diffraction, or where it is attenuated by structural metal. Dead-spots can be very small, but worth seeking out.
      If that fails try and find a time of day when the interference is less. My home Wi-Fi changes from ultrafast to unworkable at predictable times as the band-width is taken up by other users, so they must be lighting up the ether. There are Wi-Fi analyser apps which can help identify the strength of signals near you.

    • @GAVINHR

      Sadly nick that's not possible, the extra range came from DJI improvements and firmware updates not the location difference, only some of the ranges are in videos I have done, the 4300m was the max I reached on multiple tests not just the one occasion and in at least 3 locations. Back then the RP didn't need to have visual eyes on the drone, you could use spotters that didn't have to be by the side of the operator. Those rules changed on 1st December 2021 all of this was recorded prior 😊
