  • I tested if the parabolic Reflectors or the yagi antennas add more range to the Mavic mini. If you’re looking to get your own here’s a link to each that I recommend

    I'm a ham radio op. Yagi's are great antennas for gain. Also, extremely directional with a strong front to back ratio. And somewhat of a tight beam, so you would have to keep them pointed at the drone all the time to get the best possible performance out of them.
    Just info for anyone.

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb 3 года назад +2

      @BenBenson The separate elements in a Yagi antenna are not electrically connected. It's the spacing and the length of the elements that matters.
      You have a driven element, then on one side a reflector element that's a bit longer. On the other side of the driven element is one of more slightly shorter elements, directors. Because of the specific distance and specific longer length, the reflector interacts with the RF from the driven element and bounces it back.
      The director elements are again a specific distance and length shorter than the driven. The RF interacts with them in more of an attractive manner, drawing more of the radiated energy in that direction.
      The opposite is true of receiving with it, making it more sensitive in the direction of the director elements.
      I doubt the precision of this slip on "yagi" thing is good enough to work well at all.

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb 3 года назад +4

      @BenBenson The parabolic works as a reflector.
      Think of a wire antenna like a light bulb. It throws light out all around it. In a flashlight, there's a parabolic lens placed on one side of the bulb. All the light that comes out that side of the bulb gets reflected in the other direction, leading to much more light in that direction.
      That's how it works with the RF coming off the antenna.
      As for the disparity in distance testing, yes, environment. These drones use wifi at 2.5 GHz. (also at 5 Ghz, which has an harmonic relationship being a multiple of 2.5) At that frequency, a water molecule is at a resonant size and absorbs the RF. This is why microwave ovens operate in the same frequency range.
      That also means that higher humidity in the air will reduce your range as more of the RF is absorbed by the water in the air.

    I have the dish, a 5 rod Yagi (5.8 Ghz) and a 8 rod Yagi with a rear side extension and these seem to be the best so far. It also really depends on what channel I pick (165 seems to be the best). I need to do more testing. This is all in a heavy urban area.

    The reason you were able to keep the drone going despite having no video feed is due to the 2 different frequencies used for communication. The drone is communicating on 2.4-2.5GHz which is has a longer transmission range than the 5.8GHz the video is transmitting on, thus the video will cut out before the aircraft truly loses communication. In fact, the drone is programmed so that as soon as the video losses communication the RTH engages despite the fact that communication isnt lost with the drone, this is why you were able to fly on after ignoring the RTH.
    Another thing to note is that you will actually get more range flying the Mavic series backwards because the antennas are mounted on the front landing gears which communicate best when directly facing the RC.
    Over all I love this video, very informative.

    Both work. Even together.
    Parabolic is best for the 2.4ghz range. Yagi Uda for the 5.8ghz range.
    They're not really meant to "boost range", but rather focus the signal to provide more stable connection.
    So yes, the absolute best is to use BOTH at once, the parabolic will redirect ALL frequencies to the front, while the yagi uda's will tune the 5.8ghz even narrower.

    We hope that these types of antennas are calibrated with the TX frequencies of the radio control, and therefore the manufacturer of the antennas has used suitable equipment to build them and relatively put them in "tune" with the TX frequency of the radio control. Otherwise, if not, the transmitter loses efficiency over time or in the worst case you can "fry" the transmitter amps for high SWR. 73 'by iu8cew

    I use the Yagi 5.8Ghz and the Yagi 2.4Ghz. Depending where i am flying. The 2.4 works better where there are lots of buildings etc. And the 5.8 works better in rural areas. Just a case of switching over and changing controller settings from 2.5 to 5.8 whenever needed.

    Oh come on dude. Why did you not try the parabolic mirror reflector with the Yaqi antennas? With the advantages they both provide for. Try using them together. Then maybe you won't lose your video feed at 10,000 feet.
    Notice the video returned when you rotated the drone. The parabolic mirror reflector might help to better reflect and focus that video signal into the Yaqi antenna array. It might increase the reception by a DB or so worth of signal strength.
    And so be careful with those flimsy little antennas. That DJI is now phasing out altogether. Then what do you do? As they build the antenna into the spring-loaded smart phone monitor mount. Who's going to make what, to improve, those?
    As an engineer here is what I would like to see on my drone remote controls. An, antenna socket. So that one could plug in, higher gain and/or higher in altitude, staff mounted, antenna system. One would wear as a harness/belt. And because most of the signal strength is based upon antenna height. Then the higher you can get. The better. And also the antenna.. Just don't fall off. Because you shouldn't be standing on a chair. You should be on the ground. With your antenna in the air.. And so you need to be able to wear a nonconductive antenna mast. And heavy rubber boots. In case you are hit by lightning. But your drone should be able to fly further that way.
    And so. As an engineer with an FCC 1st Class Radiotelephone License. I am authorized. To install antenna socket. Onto my remote controls. And don't think I won't. You'll just be able to plug-in an external antenna if one desires. It will disconnect the onboard antenna. And you don't want to be standing underneath any electrical wires. It could be bad for your health. And your remote control. So don't do that.
    Now I've got this really groovy, telescoping plastic mast. It's only about 7 or 8 feet long. It goes out to like 40 feet long. It's awesome. Perfect place to put an antenna and a pair of, forward phasing and rear facing wide-angle cameras. So you can always see everything coming and going. Add a little flag. And everyone will know where you are. Add some colorful blinking LED's to the flag. Just to let them know how flashy you really are. And you will be the talk of your town. Nobody will want you walking indoors. Because you won't fit. Don't forget that. You've got a monkey on your back. You have to walk around with. And it goes 40 feet high. If you aren't already.
    I'm so glad we had this heart to Fart talk.
    RemyRAD
    PS
    Doing this for network television for 20 years will do this to you. I can't help myself. Competition is stiff amongst the major television networks. And they only wanted the very best engineers like myself. To come up with great ideas.
    Really I just want to mount a MAVIC Mini-Air-Pro that has a broken arm. Or 2.. That still has a working camera and gimbal. To put on top of my 40 foot telescopic light weight plastic mast. Instead of some stupid Go Pro with electronic image stabilization. No! I want a 3 axis gyroscopic stabilized gimbal mount. I'm sorry. That's just me. Screw electronic image stabilization. I want gyroscopes stabilizing it. Gravity thinks better than integrated circuit chips. Gravity knows what to do all the time. And gravity likes spinning things. So do the planets and the stars. There's something to this spinning stuff. I'm pretty certain of. I mean what would gravity be if we didn't have any big balls? You have to have big balls to have gravity. Those are called planets and moons, asteroids and comets. They all offer something for you to stand on. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune also. But would crush you and burn you to a crisp before you got there. To find out what you can stand upon. How hot or cold is metallic hydrogen? We don't want to find out. Not personally. It's great that it exists. I don't know what we would do without it? It's nothing we want to be directly involved with. And certainly not smoking a cigarette around. Near any oxygen. Though, I don't think a cigarette will work without any oxygen? So don't even try that around any metallic hydrogen or any kind of hydrogen for that matter. I'm sure the guy cleaning up the hallways of the Graf zeppelin simply dropped his cigarette. Oh the humanity. What a bunch of dumb asses. (But you didn't hear him say that)
