Also guys I just wanted to jump back on this video bc I realized I forgot to mention that I also had to do a bowel clean out before using the Peristeen to make sure nothing was low lying/I was too full. Basically, I drank an entire bottle of Mira lax (as instructed by my doctor) in a matter of hours so I could get everything out. It lasted for about 2 days but I thought I should include that bc some ppl might want to know what they’re getting themselves into! But, personally, it’s very much worth it to have security. Also it’s important to lubricate your catheters for longer than just a few seconds- more like a minute. Or else the balloon will pop and you’ll have to restart the process!
Over the years I’ve periodically done bouts of research on paraplegia and this time around I’ve learned the most. I used to be very ignorant about it, to the point where I would ask questions that now I know come across as rude. This channel has been an amazing way to educate myself without asking stupid questions that might be offensive. There are still many things that aren’t clear to me yet, but now I’ve gone down this rabbit hole, I’m mighty certain I’ll get answers eventually without asking improper questions. This is really enlightening to me because for the longest time I would view paraplegia as a life sentence, and now I know that people push through it and manage to lead happy, independent lives just like anyone else.
Ty Tara. I am a caregiver and about to move in to assist a quadriplegic man as my next assignment and your videos are much better than the boring medical videos on youtube. ❤
Thanks for putting stuff out. My brother is in inpatient rehab for an incomplete SCI. The only thing that has helped him are PT and OT. Thanks God for OT they helped him with prevent bed sores and bowel management. Wish you all the best.
Aw that’s very nice of you to be looking at vids to help him! Let him know he can ask me anything, I’m a little farther ahead in the process than him from the sounds of it lol! I promise it’ll be better real soon for everyone! Watching vids of ppl in similar situations as me and following other ppl w SCI realllyyyy helped me get started and know what to do in terms of equipment/recovery/independence!
Thanks for this. I have a peristeen due to MS. I'd given up using it and went back to regular enemas, which aren't really that effective for me. I kept popping balloons. But after seeing this I may try it again. You are a beautiful, intelligent young woman. I wish you well.
@@ParaTara No thank you. Though not a para or quad, I am what some would consider disabled. (but I don't). It's just so refreshing to see such a bright, pretty, shiny, young person with such a positive, winning attitude. Keep that, guard it jealously, let no one take it from you and you'll go far in life - peace and love to you and your family.
Hi, I have ms too and have been using this for a few months on and off but recently I use it every day to keep my bowel somewhat empty or else I can go on forever without the feeling to poop 😢 Hope you’re doing ok , take care
I seems like BC routines have come quite a ways since i cared for my friend Wayne. His bowel care happened usually every 3 days & took 4-6 hours from start to finish.
For me also its function fluctuates❤ so valuable , wish id found these vids earlier! I have anorectal malformation and have started using it only recently.my issue is that i cant wait after finishibg pumping , its like a waterfall😮 also i needed to accept its just messy in all senses of the word, eg changing frequency, water on the floor, balloon popping...etx etc It also really matters if i eat before or after, what time it is, and how tired i am, and if im on my period.
What catheter do you use? I saw diferente ones and yours seems to inflate perfectly. I’m from brasil and if I can import this would be amazing. Thank you very much
I’m not sure of the different options, as I get these by prescription. I think there’s a child and adult size, but I’m not totally sure. You can find more info about the Peristeen on the Coloplast website!
HI I discovered your channel. My disability is different (I have Cerebral palsy ) but I also struggling with my bowel (chronic constipation) Do you have any accessible in the bathroom. Can you make a video about it? Take care and good luck 😍
I actually hear the Peristeen can be used for other disabilities/GI issues including constipation but I’m sure your doctor would know more about your personal options! I did have chronic constipation before my disability but I don’t have it now as I’m on this routine! Maybe I could make an accessible bathroom video in the future but honestly I just have a roll in shower, 1 grab bar with the shower, and 2 grab bars by the toilet (no commode)! The sink is also a pedestal and the medicine cabinet is down low so I can reach all the shelving.
Hi Tara, I just got the Peristeen and I have a question: how long do I leave the catheter in after I’ve pumped all the water in? Do I immediately take the catheter out right after all the water is pumped orrr? Thanks.
Hello Tara, did you have to go through a denial/appeal process to get coverage through Medicaid? Can you offer any advice on convincing Medicaid that it is a necessity? Also, after you have inflated the balloon and start to introduce the water into the colon, how long do you leave the water in place before emptying the balloon and removing the catheter?
There was no need, it was automatically approved for the Peristeen but I was scared at first that it wouldn’t be because it doesn’t seem like a typical product haha! My primary insurance is Tricare Prime and I’m pretty sure if they don’t at least cover a percentage then the second insurance won’t cover anything either tho.. but don’t quote me haha! I try to make it 10 mins but sometimes the balloon malfunctions/pops so I have to repeat the process because it wasn’t long enough to stimulate anything!
@@ParaTara thank you for the response, I guess I should have listened closer, watching the 2nd time you had already addressed my questions. One more question, how long does the water bag last? It seems like Coloplast wants you to replace it fairly frequently.
@@fragile1976 yeah they suggest changing every 15 days but I kinda just throw it out when I think of it but I usually don’t go too far past 2 weeks anyway! They say that to prevent any kind of nastiness growing! And the whole system is replaced every 3 months!

I have a question, what if you have ibs and you are in a wheelchair and how would you deal with that type of thing?

Thank you for doing these videos. They were a big help in understanding the process from a users point of view.
You’re welcome! There’s not much info on the Peristeen from a REAL user online
i pray and wish for your good healthand happiness. stay safe and happy sis.
