With the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U, Region Locked takes a look at another Nintendo game by one of Zelda's key developers, Eiji Aonuma, titled Marvelous: Another Treasure Island. Through our analysis of Marvelous' gameplay and its history, we hope to shed some light on why this game never left Japanese shores.

love region locked. Please never stop
Shesez something about the region locked games' exclusivity makes them so interesting.
Ive always had a fascination with games outside my region. but reading wikipedia articles can be a bore. Its nice to have a great overview with footage of the game.
Shesez oh of course, lol. It's rewarding to put forth the effort to find out that sort of stuff, but streamlining it in a more consumable form is so much easier and more fun to participate in.
Love Boundary Break. Please never stop.
Thank you! Your support is greatly appreciated! :)
Aonuma is an absolute creative genius. Everything he touches has so much love put into it.
"If you want to make a Zelda game, just make one" *makes one of the greatest games of all time*
Just Aonuma things
You misspelled overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game and all, but a lot of its credit comes from people's nostalgia. It has some pretty big flaws.
Fuck off, What are these flaws you speak off? And you want to tell me the millions of fans that zelda has all have nostalgia? Utter Nonsense, There's a reason they are so popular and reviewed so well
The Water Temple is a great dungeon
Ace in the Hole
You described literally every Zelda game
newt Not BotW. BotW is so different that some people say it doesn't feel like Zelda, so there's no way people enjoy it because of nostalgia. And I don't think you've played enough Zelda games if you say they're all overrated. Pretty much nobody talks about Minish Cap or Spirit Tracks, just to name two.
"Why do you keep poking me there?"
It's a good thing you specified "Zelda's Aonuma" so people wouldn't mistake him with all the other Aonumas
Y'know, it'd be super cool if Nintendo just paid the various people who have made translation patches for their games and then sold the translated games on the virtual console. I mean, the work has already been done for them. Do they just not like money?
the man responsible for the amazing Mother 3 fan translation even offered to both give Nintendo his data for FREE and his further work on it in the event they want anything altered in some way, and yet we still don't have any official release of it :(
I agree though, Mother 3, Marvelous, most of the unlocalized Fire Emblem games ( I mainly want Geneology of the Holy War, Binding Blade and New Mystery of the Emblem ), For the Frog the Bell Tolls and Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse all have rather good fan translations that could easily work as official ones. Of course, I'd also love to see Archaic Sealed Heat, Soma Bringer, Jet Impulse, Chosoju Mecha MG, Giftpia, Captain Rainbow, the first 4 Starfy games and Tomato Adventure translated officially or otherwise....
newageBoundhippie Not to forget YU-NO. It had an amazing English translated version of it, and got ported to work on Windows.
maugos They'd still have to hire people to make sure the translation was accurate. Still, it would be a lot less work.
Oh yes, I'm with you their on GiFTPiA and Captain Rainbow.
It's part a pride and honor thing, definitely, but also simple quality control. These patches are great, yes, but they still contain fundamental differences that one could not really fix without having the full source code and original development software available. I think that's what Aonuma was getting into with subtitles and the like. They more than likely have the source code for this game, but the programs they used to edit it are probably long gone, or simply won't run on modern setups.
I'm growing to adore this video series even more every upload!
Thank you! I'm glad that you feel we're improving!
8+8-3 = LEGENDARY UNSOLVABLE PUZZLE!
Pablo1517 awesome icon hey what's the name of that character
absolute zero His name is Lee Sin "The Blind Monk" from League of Legends.
Fill@PieNo! OK thx

holy shit this game looks amazing!
Man this show is so interesting I really enjoy any and all episodes you guys put out
"If you want to make a Zelda game so bad, just make one"
DMCA Takedown
"Why do you keep poking me there?"
Oh my god, Aonuma! No wonder BOTW has wuch sexy sass in it.
This series never fails to amaze.
Thank you! I'm glad you feel that way :)
It'd be very interesting to see the trio become assist trophies in a future Smash or maybe a small scale sequel on eshop. I'd like Nintendo to make more use of smaller IPs in general
Is it just me or was Miyamoto kind of a dick to Aonuma in the late 90's?
A: "Hey, look at this game I made! It's inspired by ALTTP!"
M: "If you wanna make a Zelda game that badly, just make one."
Few years later:
A: "I wanna make a sequel to the game I helped make!"
M: "If you wanna do it that badly, go and do it. I will give you one year to create it from scratch."
You guys should do a region locked for Mega Drive games. Alien Soldier is a fine example of a game that deserves an episode. Then again, anyone who is reading this could come to my channel to learn about the game but still seeing how DYKG is quite huge it would bring great exposure to one the greatest and most underrated games to ever exist!
I came back to this video just to thank you for the region locked series. I thought, I knew all the good fan translated games (Live a Live, Treasure of the Rudra...), but without you, Marvelous would totally flew under the radar. Thx for showing this absolute gem, its deep in my heart, even 3 years after playing trough it.
Dion, Jack, and Max? More like Chrono, Wheres Waldo, and Pokey Minch
I thought they were very obviously Alvin, Simon, and Theodore.
I actually thought Jack was Magus from the thumbnail....
Ed, Edd, n' Eddy obviously
I thought of Crono and Pokey too lol
I have to ask... Is it Pokey or Porky? I'm kinda confused.
Speaking of stamp rallies, I remember when Pokemon Black and White came out, a nearby mall had a Pokemon stamp rally, and once you got all the stamps, they gave you tickets to see a limited theatrical release of the Zorua Pokemon movie
Omigosh, this game! I remember reading about this in Nintendo Power and then hearing nothing about it at all -- I always wondered what had happened to it. Thank you immensely for this video -- it is such a relief to finally know.
*pokes boob*
"Why do you keep poking me there?"
xD
Give us Marvelous 2 and Startropics 3 for the Switch!
I saw that article about Marvelous in Nintendo Power and was always bummed it never got released over here. I had even forgotten the name of it until now. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for showing me this game existed~
I shall try it now.
Mmmmm That stock famicom music :) Cheers me up everytime I hear it
max looks like Pokey from Earthbound. just saying.
Nintendo should use the Nintendo Switch's online capabilities to re release a bunch of Satellaview games for free once you pay for online services.
that would be a really cool idea....Satellaview featured some great Nintendo games like the Marvelous spin-offs mentioned in the video, BS Fire Emblem titles, BS Zelda ( a 16-bit remake of the original Legend of Zelda with a new protagonist that can be male OR female ), a BS F-Zero, remakes of the Famicom Detective Club titles and even really cool updated versions of Wrecking Crew & Excitebike with multiplayer.
Don't forget Sutte Hakkun! Nintendo's great forgotten puzzle platformer.
If this means I can get the MARIO themed version of ExciteBike, I'm all for it.
+ BS chrono trigger stuff(OST, Bike race and maybe more I forgot)
Radical Dreamers. The game that sort of ties Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross together.
1:25
Alright.
5:40 "Dion was given a different name, and instead called Dino"
LOL or maybe a typo?
This series is really great.
I remember reading about this game in Nintendo Power and even asking for it around Christmas time all those years ago. I thought it looked pretty cool so it's unfortunate that it never saw release here in the west.
Max from Marvelous looks like Pokey from Earthbound
Jack from Marvelous looks like Beaker from The Muppet Show
Dion from Marvelous looks like Chrono from Chrono Trigger
That island game looks awesome!
Awesome video
That game totally reminds me of Goof Troop.
@0:42: Is the Zelda gameplay taken from elsewhere? The Marvelous footage looks very crisp while the Zelda footage looks blurry.
Wow! there are so many Textures/models that were also used in Link to the past.
Awesome vidd, gave you a like ^.^
The puzzles in BOTW actually invoke marvelous a lot.
I remember reading those articles about Marvelous... made me want to play it so bad.
Where's the Twitch link?
To be fair, Aonuma didn't mean that releasing his game on VC is impossible, but it would require someone's time and that would also mean money. Fan translations tend to be free and made out of simple passion, you see...
1:25 "Why do you keep poking me there?"
Dion = Courage
Jack = Wisdom
Max = Power
THE ULTIMATE TRIFORCE!!!
Might have to get a reproduction cartridge of this game. It looks Marvelous!
I’d love to see an episode of Region Locked episode on *Godzilla: Kaijuu Daikessen* for the Super Famicom
marvelous must coming worldwide!!
I'd love a video on Tetra's Trackers!
That's awesome.
Would love a Region Locked on Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3: Kowareyuku Machi to Kanojo no Uta
I loved this game! I played it with the unofficial fan-translation.
where's the stream link on the description?
Was hoping this had something to do with the company Marvelous. Would be cool to see them get talked about sometimes given the nature of their games, but this was a pretty sweet video regardless.
But seriously, what is so hard about pronouncing Aonuma?
Combat Fritos It's not hard. It's just that people don't know proper Japanese pronunciation, and the incorrect pronunciation spreads.
Everything in Japanese Romaji is 100% phonetic. Letters will sound the same every single time. I have no idea how someone could see "Aonuma" and pronounce it "Ayanuma".
Combat Fritos >expecting accurate pronunciation from Region Locked still at this point
learning how to pronounce the vowels in Japanese makes it easy. Ah (a), we (i) soon (u) old (o)
Edit: hey (e)
Brian Cannaday Oh, absolutely. I've offered on a couple videos to help with their pronunciation and have heard nothing back, so at this point, willful ignorance?
cheers for cracking windows 10 daz
I bet he meant he couldn't translate the base game anymore because they no longer have the actual game files to recreate the SNES title. The patch, after all, is a hack made in-post. They edited hex values and had to manually locate all the text and discern what was what and where in a hacky sort of manner, rather than the work that was done before the ROM was generated.
1:24 For just one second I thought this was a different kind of game
You're never going to do Sakura Wars are you?
***** Except that it's really expensive and exclusive to play, so it'd be ideal for people unaware of the franchise that saved Sega in Japan.
Still, there could be more incentive to it AFTER the fan translation for Sakura Taisen 1 PC gets finished sometime in the future. The first installment in the series gives an impressive leeway to the numerous supplementary material dedicated to the series at the time (Live plays, spinoffs, songs, the OVAs + TV Anime).
Has DYKD shown any interest on providing info on this series before, BTW?
Hey, I've seen the requests going, but to be honest visual novels are a bit of a pain to cover. We will do some in the future, but we have a list of hundreds of games we want to cover. Some people are going to be disappointed, we just hope you'll appreciate that these things take time and we will eventually reach some series that you'd love to see.
There are a few games I LOVE that we have yet to cover, due to the fact that I feel they don't provide much of a unique perspective.
Dazz - Region Locked That's poor reasoning. Why are visual novels a pain to cover? You literally covered a Japan exclusive Ace Attorney. For a series called Region Locked, you are making a fantastic effort to region lock Sakura Wars from DYKG subscribers.
Yes, we did cover Ace Attorney, and it was a pain... That's how I know it's a pain to cover them. I wouldn't just state that if I hadn't had experience doing so.
Surprised there's no mention of Tri Force Heroes, which seems to be inspired by this.
It looks similar to the Prehistoric chapter of Live a Live...
Holy crap, the graphics in this game are pretty awesome!
where do u find english translation? looks really fun.
Hmm, pirates and Marvelous I can only think of one thing. Gokaiger!
Whoo! Monster World IV!
You keep touching me there. Haha I wonder why. ;) id play this looks like fun.
it looks like gunple in a way too. neat
Weird, I've never heard of this game but it looks pretty fun
If Zelda and Earthbound mixed and was created by Aonuma?! Sign me up!
those games seem to be really cool
where is the link to the twitch
shoopoopie1 One might say it is a link to the past.
I actually love this game and wanted a remake for the Wii.
If the game is a base for Zelda would this be triforce heroes just with SNES sprites?
It reminds me to a link to the past, secret of the mana and chrono trigger
Holy shit! I saw this game in Nintendo Power!
What else has more of a focus on puzzles and pc adventure game elements...
what a cluster fuck of a title
Jack looks like he has seen some messed up shit.
1:21 ....was that part of the gameplay supposed to be there.
i never thought that "DidYouKnowGaming?" has the same upload of "RegionLocked"?
How Triforce Heroes should've been made. As a way to port this game to the Us.
Am I the only one who thinks that one of the kids in this game looks like Porky Minch from the Earthbound series?
"If you want to make a Zelda game that bad, why don't you just actually make a Zelda game?" - Miyamoto
Where do you get this quote? I can't find it anywhere from googling
"Ayanuma, Ayanuma, Ayanuma"
Argh! :P
It's sad that the game didn't get translate I would of probably checked it out
Why is the shadow of spoderman on the thumbnail?
I would like to play this game.
How do you look at "Ao" and get "Aya"
OW-NOO-MAH
where the hell are you getting "eye-yah-noo-mah?
Guys... I'm on time!!!!
Stamp rallies aren´t a Japan only activity. Germany has an equivalent, the Schnitzeljagd.
This is true, while writing I tried to find the English equivalent, but I couldn't. I've done some before in hedge mazes or field trips.
"Eiji Aiyanuma"
My ears
That marvelous game looks.... MARVno Im not gonna do it, but it does look good
Quando você tá assistindo um canal gringo de jogos antigos e até lá é lembrado do 7 a 1 5:23 --'
1:23 Why do you keep poking me there?
Didn't see a twitch link.
What was up with that dragon ball book getting stamped?
I really don't understand why Nintendo doesn't just use fan translations as their own localizations. Even if they payed the people who contributed, they'd still be saving tons of time and money.
There's no twitch link in the comments, or I'm blind.
Only mention of twitch on the page is this comment :/
This game looks much more complex than Link To The Past.
I would love to become a game designer/developer for Nintendo but I don't have the nerd skills or can't speak japanese
