It's worth mentioning the DS offered an innovative wrist strap that also functioned as a thumbpad to use for analog control on the touch screen. My first play through of Mario 64 was using this method. It worked so well that I used it for any game that offered it. For StarFox Command, you can change the control type in the in game settings to Type B and that will invert your Y axis without having to apply a different version of the cheat.
I love the 3DS scene in general. It's genuinely so amazing that a family of systems from the 2000's-2010's can play millions of games across almost every game generation, and you don't even have to know how to code to get all this CFW on it. It's not just the basic homebrew either; there's QR code download sites, lost media still being found, ROM hacks and even new games entirely, even 3D print downloads to make custom cartridge holders, stands/cases, and styluses. I still use my New 3DS XL to this day and play all sorts of games on it. I just hope the hacking scene makes the system popular enough for me to get StreetPass regularly again(though I have spotted it happening on a few recent instances). Disagree on the scaling filters. The reason the 3DS uses a "smooth" filter for DS games is because you can't "pixel perfect" upscale 192p to 240p, nearest neighbor scaling just doubles random lines and distorts the image, it's evident in your own example at 1:26, just look at the mugs on the table, or the stools nearby. In comparison, the Vita was exactly double the resolution of PSP,, i.e. 544p vs 272p, so the backwards compatibility mode could simply double everything resulting in a sharp image with no distortion.

@@ihaveagoddamnplanarthur it's very good if you have at least a friend to play it locally. Which requires two 3DS and 2 copies of the game and a bit of annoying menuing. The gameplay is very similar to Metroid Prime, but it's not a map to explore like traditional Metroid games, here it's missions based coop. It's a very fun coop experience and a great way to introduce new players to Metroid. However it's really not representative of what 3D metroid games are. Play Metroid Prime 1 on the switch or GameCube for that. But if you have someone to experience Fed Force it's really a blast. The bad reputation that it has is due to the time it was revealed. E3 2015, the last Metroid game at the time was Metroid other M in 2010 that was already disappointing for the fans. So the last acclaimed Metroid game was 2007 Metroid prime 3. So people were really waiting for a new Metroid game at this point and they released a chibi aesthetic coop game on the 3DS with no mention of a mainline game at all. No one wanted this and they were furious, the reveal trailer got the most dislike to like ratio in the history of RUclips at the time. (Very impressive) If they were to reveal a teaser for Samus return while presenting this game I think the game would have done better. It's just unfortunate, but the people that played it usually like it
@antonshotpoteita yes but also no. It just came at a time where metroid wasn't getting any love and instead of a real metroid prime game they got a co-op multiplayer where you don't play as samus.

I know a lot of people who like just having eight directions on the circlepad. Like most control sticks, it's not exactly easy to not push it all the way, so having it with a run button you can turn off and on is often enough. Plus, I mean, the game was completely redesigned with its camera angles and such to make it where everything lined up on the 8 angles.
6:15 i have absolutely no idea why flying games just feel so nice and natural to be played with the Y axis inverted, like even if it's your first time ever playing a flying game you'll just blend into the controls naturally and smoothly
I seem to get a hanging white screen on both Kingdom Hearts 358/2, and on Phantom Hourglass when I try and launch either with the circle pad cheat enabled. Any ideas?
For me the D-pad mod on phantom hourglass removes the c-pad cheat option. Only the vanilla game will have it show up. How did you get both working at once?
I have to imagine that these people are referring to the library of the console rather than what the console itself can do and play. I can see someone preferring the DS library over the 3DS one, but the latter is objectively a better machine.
Not sure if y'all had this problem but when running the circle pad patch on Metroid Prime: Hunters, make sure it's running in DSi mode, not DS mode otherwise you'll get a white screen.
Small update. After trying to do this I noticed that some games now forever stuck on white screen if I'm using forwarder, after some troubleshooting I realised that it happens if I leave Circle Pad cheats on, removing them let me get into the games from main screen again, but sadly without 16:10 aspect ratio, for this I have to go through Twilight Menu every time.
I was able to apply the dpatch to the Zelda Phantom Hourglass rom but now i am unable to apply the cstick cheat. Twilight Menu says there are no cheats detected. Anyone else have this issue?
So glad I found this video. I tried playing Mario 64 DS for the first time since it launched when I was a kid. Loved it. And the analog controls and camera mod worked beautifully. I prefer this version to the original N64 version lol.
Had this video saved for a Sunday afternoon when my kids went to sleep at the same time and I could have a couple hours to focus on doing this. I just did and it works perfectly, thank you very much!
I'm trying to get the Zelda D-pad patched games to work with the C-pad cheat code, but when I select the D-Pad patched games (ie Phantom Hourglass) it says "No cheats found". It works on the base games, but it doesn't work for the D-Pad patched versions for me. Was anyone able to get this working with D-pad controls and the C-pad cheat for both Zelda DS games?
7:41 Unbeatable [white label] (and its parent game which isn't out yet, just called Unbeatable) fits this perfectly and its so damn beautiful. Plus the songs are all bangers.
Amazing stuff! Can't wait to try this out along with the Virtual Boy emulator. (btw regarding the closing music, I just got an arrangement of that posted on OC ReMix!)
Badass video!! Thank you for making it. Can’t wait to try this out on my favorite games. I’m so glad there’s so many people wayyy smarter than me working on 3DS projects and then all we have to do is download, install & enjoy 😂
The circle pad is always one of those things where I wonder why it didn't happen sooner, imagine a DS launch with a circle pad! Very glad DS titles can finally get some of the control they deserve. 3DS is the best hand held console ever released and it's all because of it's community.
Prime Hunters was always a comfy control scheme. Back in Yee Old Days of the original NDS there was a thumb stylus that came with every console. It was attached to the strap that came with it. the strap for the console worked like a little belt on the thumb stylus, fitting the stylus firm to your thumb. your thumb was supposed to turn your touch screen into an analog stick. The gyroscopic aiming is cool as hell though.
Cant wait for Dual Stick/Gyro controls Kid Icarus Uprising. Its one of those games that are defined entirely by the system they came out for, but I just know Ill 101% again on Citra or whatever the mod works on.
This is just magic. The concept of widescreen DS games looks so good! Seeing Mario 64 DS with widescreen and analog controls was cool even if I never played it or the original. And I legit forgot about 358/2 Days despite it being my first DS game. I absolutely loved it and it being my first Kingdom Hearts game, I had no reason to dislike the controls. But that full analog movement looks like magic and I love it. It looks like a whole different game, but also just how I remember it And then Metroid Prime Hunters... Another one I haven't played, but I've heard people talk down about it. Full analog AND Gyro is insane for a DS game. I'm so curious to try this out.
I finally found the time to set this up on my 3DS, and it works beautifully. It kind of blows my mind playing Super Mario 64 DS with full analog control, and not only movement but camera control at the same time! And Starfox Command is so much more playable now - I mean, I played the hell out of it back when it first came out, but this is a fine excuse to do it again.
I always played Mario 64 DS with the touch screen using the little thumb pad thingy that was built into the wrist strap for the DS. That said, my biggest issue playing that way was the 'virtual analog stick' would move location which made things harder then they needed to be.
Oh my goodness, I've been wanting to replay Mario 64 DS for years now but everytime I booted my copy I never got all that far cuz nostalgia wasnt enough for me to bear the horrible controls but this is a game changer. I used the little plastic thingy that came with the original NDS strap, it attached to the base of your thumb, you pressed that in the touchscreen, and voilá, analog in the DS.
As a side effect, a lot of gaming hours later I had to change the touch digitizer.

YES! so happy to see more people spreading the word about this amazing way to play DS games, and thank you so much for telling everyone how to do it themselves!
I tried doing it myself and it ended up being a nightmare because none of the guides worked, I really hope people are able to follow your guide well!
Thank you!
i see that metroid prime federation force is installed on your console
o7 you're the real mvp
It is worth playing ? People say it's bad but I'm new to Metroid (playing samus return rn) and would like to play full 3D games.
(Very impressive)
If they were to reveal a teaser for Samus return while presenting this game I think the game would have done better.
It's just unfortunate, but the people that played it usually like it
@antonshotpoteita yes but also no. It just came at a time where metroid wasn't getting any love and instead of a real metroid prime game they got a co-op multiplayer where you don't play as samus.

It's awesome in local coop.
Not worth it at all solo.
Play Metroid Prime if you want to discover 3D metroid but fed force is an awesome little coop game.
this is how i find out Jon has his own youtube channel now. Hell yeah
Nice Phantom Hourglass music 😍
This NEEDS to be heard, imagine if Modern DS Emulators like melonDS could have these features as well!
These recent videos have all been bangers keep it up Jon
I know a lot of people who like just having eight directions on the circlepad. Like most control sticks, it's not exactly easy to not push it all the way, so having it with a run button you can turn off and on is often enough.
Plus, I mean, the game was completely redesigned with its camera angles and such to make it where everything lined up on the 8 angles.
Now we need this for Kid Icarus
YES PLS. I love that game but dammit it's a wrist killer
I think there already are one for that?
i really enjoy to see all of those videos on 3ds homebrew
9:52 my skin crawled when I saw this
6:15 i have absolutely no idea why flying games just feel so nice and natural to be played with the Y axis inverted, like even if it's your first time ever playing a flying game you'll just blend into the controls naturally and smoothly
I seem to get a hanging white screen on both Kingdom Hearts 358/2, and on Phantom Hourglass when I try and launch either with the circle pad cheat enabled. Any ideas?
YES! Thank you for the tutorial. Could only get one or two of the patches working at a time, this will be very helpful.
For me the D-pad mod on phantom hourglass removes the c-pad cheat option. Only the vanilla game will have it show up. How did you get both working at once?
did you get it to work
Amazing.
Also, UP is always UP.
Lastly, DOWN is always DOWN.
Excellent video on the best handheld system ever!! 😎🙌
The widescreen doesn't show up in twilightmenu I don't get what I'm doing wrong
Hi, if you're still having this problem. I forgot to do the step at 2:20 so I went back and did it and it works
You just convinced me to play metroid prime hunters on my 2ds. You achieved your goal. Congrats.
How do you get the d-pad and circle pad with phantom hourglass the code is not showing up for me?
did you find out how
Every new GVG video gets me that much closer to clicking “buy” on a 3DS XL. :)
I will never understand people that prefer the DS over the 3DS. It has to be nostalgia at this point.
I have to imagine that these people are referring to the library of the console rather than what the console itself can do and play. I can see someone preferring the DS library over the 3DS one, but the latter is objectively a better machine.
Not sure if y'all had this problem but when running the circle pad patch on Metroid Prime: Hunters, make sure it's running in DSi mode, not DS mode otherwise you'll get a white screen.
were you able to make the gyro work? every time i push the button combo either nothing happens, or the camera will just start going in one direction
Is it still possible to do if you're using bootstraper like YANBF? I like having my DS games on the main screen without needing to go to Twilight.
These 3DS videos are so impressive because of all the new possibilities with this device.
I was able to apply the dpatch to the Zelda Phantom Hourglass rom but now i am unable to apply the cstick cheat. Twilight Menu says there are no cheats detected. Anyone else have this issue?
Currently having this issue as well. I wish I could give a solution :(
So glad I found this video. I tried playing Mario 64 DS for the first time since it launched when I was a kid. Loved it. And the analog controls and camera mod worked beautifully. I prefer this version to the original N64 version lol.
Tried this and 3DS screens quality for DS games is garbage :(
Had this video saved for a Sunday afternoon when my kids went to sleep at the same time and I could have a couple hours to focus on doing this.
Was anyone able to get this working with D-pad controls and the C-pad cheat for both Zelda DS games?
did you ever get it to work
7:41 Unbeatable [white label] (and its parent game which isn't out yet, just called Unbeatable) fits this perfectly and its so damn beautiful. Plus the songs are all bangers.
Oh man, the gyro bit at the end was such a pleasant surprise. I feel bad for anyone that didn't watch until the end.
So glad that you’re covering the RTCOM patches
Learning that I can play Days with full analog movement and camera control made my night
Amazing stuff! Can't wait to try this out along with the Virtual Boy emulator. (btw regarding the closing music, I just got an arrangement of that posted on OC ReMix!)
Holy hell, this just gave me so much motivation to pick up my 3ds again and play games I didn't before!
Badass video!! Thank you for making it. Can’t wait to try this out on my favorite games. I’m so glad there’s so many people wayyy smarter than me working on 3DS projects and then all we have to do is download, install & enjoy 😂
I legit didn't know about changing the resolution scaling for DS games. Gamechanger
Amazing, had no clue this was even a thing. DSi XL will still be my favourite way to play DS games due to the screen but this is awesome
I wish we lived in the timeline where Nintendo continued the DS line, but I'm happy the community keeps making the 3DS better and better
These are some game changers, no idea who you are, but RUclips somehow knew I'd love your content! You get a sub
Man thanks so much, these mods are so good every ds gane looks sooooo goood now
Cant wait for Dual Stick/Gyro controls Kid Icarus Uprising. Its one of those games that are defined entirely by the system they came out for, but I just know Ill 101% again on Citra or whatever the mod works on.
This is how I've been playing through Super Mario 64 DS and I've been having a blast :3
This DEMANDED a video for so long, glad you made more people aware of it!
There's also a 3DS port for Mario 64 DS so you can also play it in full 3D!
what. You mean Mario 64 port. Not 64 DS
Hope some of this stuff can be built in when we eventually get DS NSO - would be a perfect work around for some of the touch screen-centric games!
It looks like a whole different game, but also just how I remember it
And then Metroid Prime Hunters... Another one I haven't played, but I've heard people talk down about it. Full analog AND Gyro is insane for a DS game. I'm so curious to try this out.
seeing gyro aiming in metroid prime hunter was mindblowing.
Damn, I tried this out a while ago but never realized how cool it could be for 3d games. nice stuff!
Just upgraded to a n3ds xl from my base 3ds and these mod videos have been awesome
You make the best homebrew 3ds videos ever, thank you!
I finally found the time to set this up on my 3DS, and it works beautifully. It kind of blows my mind playing Super Mario 64 DS with full analog control, and not only movement but camera control at the same time! And Starfox Command is so much more playable now - I mean, I played the hell out of it back when it first came out, but this is a fine excuse to do it again.
this is very impressive and makes me curious how some of my favorite games would look with the widescreen mod
I always played Mario 64 DS with the touch screen using the little thumb pad thingy that was built into the wrist strap for the DS. That said, my biggest issue playing that way was the 'virtual analog stick' would move location which made things harder then they needed to be.
I just looked this up 20 minutes ago... scary that it just popped up in now... glad to have this video though.
This video alone is worth subbing to this channel. THANK YOU JON!
I absolutely love the content of this channel! It's a joy whenever there's a new upload!
Oh my goodness, I've been wanting to replay Mario 64 DS for years now but everytime I booted my copy I never got all that far cuz nostalgia wasnt enough for me to bear the horrible controls but this is a game changer. Just finished setting everything up and just running around peaches castle WOW, this might be a hot take but dare I say? This might be the best way to play Mario 64 (including the N64 version)
You can also map the run button in SM64 DS to the dpad on the regular ds too. It plays way better with dive/punch on Y and no need to hold down a run button.
Beautiful. Now we need updated Wifi options for DS Games.
