Intro to Dialectical Behavior Therapy and DBT Skills

  • What is DBT? Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of talk therapy that helps treat many different mental health issues, especially related to emotion regulation and impulse control, but it’s most well known for its efficacy in Borderline Personality Disorder treatment. Although some stigma and misunderstanding still remains, before DBT, BPD was generally accepted to be completely untreatable. After finding Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to be ineffective for BPD treatment, Dr. Marsha Linehan realized she could combine a focus on acceptance and mindfulness with the CBT focus on change to make DBT. This therapy revolutionized psychology and has saved countless lives, and to take that a step further, it has helped many create a life worth living.
SO - I was surprised to find how absolutely lacking some of the most popular “What is DBT” videos on RUclips are in information. I’m hoping this video will serve as a more helpful introduction for those who want to better understand Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
In this video, I give a little background and explain what DBT is, how it differs from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), what DBT skills are, what a DBT program looks like, and whether or not you can learn DBT by yourself.

I look forward to hearing reviews on those workbooks. DBT skills classes around here are booked completely and super long wait lists. Self-help is the only way many of us can proceed.

I hear that so often - that's one reason why I hate seeing DBT gate keeping. Yes, those other elements of certified programs can be especially beneficial for a lot of people (especially pwBPD) and it can be difficult to learn on your own, but that doesn't mean it can't still be helpful! If someone would benefit from DBT and their options are no DBT or self-help... yes, self help!
It's been really cool to see others use the foundations of Marsha's work to make self-help materials - people are seeing the demand for more accessible resources, and they're not only writing more - they're also improving on them. One of the books I'll be reviewing is brand spankin new and takes an interesting approach.
Also hey, I've noticed you always watch my videos and comment as soon as they come out. I wanna say I really appreciate your support and encouragement 🤗

Hey @cyniful - welome to the unofficial club of people who comment on and appreciate @SarruhTonin 's videos. You mentioned that self help is the only way that many of us can proceed. How about peer group help? Maybe we could organize something? Feel free to reach out if you'd like to explore this idea.

      Did it work?

Does dbt teach you to see the gray area between black & white? And if it does, and a person integrates this gray area, does splitting stop occurring because of all the new neuroplasticity changes that have adjusted the brain to being mindful of the considerations of the nuances between "all good / all bad"? Or does splitting happen exactly the same, except now you're able to be mindful during it and essentially "mask" during the split so that to the outside observer, like say, a significant other, or a friend, you have not split at all (even tho you have internally but just not showing it)?

    • @JeffreyWilliams-dr7qe

@mrlozano Not sure but it's horrible tedious. Apparently antipsychotics not for bpd. We are lucky for this.

I'm watching out of order but wow @sarruhTonin I am learning a lot and after watching this, I feel a lot more confident about finding the right DBT program for myself. So I am commenting to thank you AGAIN for doing these videos - you have a clear voice and a personality that is so easy to relate to and comprehend without a bunch of jargon thrown in. I finally actually know what DBT means, lol -thanks!

I hope you subscribe if you haven’t yet so you don’t miss it! Thanks so much for watching and commenting 😊

You’re immensely likeable 🤗😇 no doubt!
In the videos I saw, Dr Linehan said she went to a Zen Buddhist retreat to deal with her issues and it worked. So she legitimized Zen Buddhism in the eyes of clinical psychology by blending it with elements of CBT, modified it for the high sensitivity of her patients, clinically tested it enough to legitimize it, and called it DBT.
Since Zen is free, I think it’s worth a shot… just my opinion 🙏❤️

Thank you so much! And yes! She talks about her zen training in some depth in her memoir. I haven't really thought about it legitiizing Zen Buddhism in clinical psychology, but you're absolutely right. She used to host her own retreats but hasn't in years. I wish I could've gone to one!

@@SarruhTonin yes it would have been especially nice to attend her retreats 😇 however there are many zen resources available - RUclips, podcasts, free PDFs by Thic Nat Hanh on the Apple bookstore, local meditation centers, etc. There are also similar Hindu resources like VivekaVani on RUclips or Vedanta Talks podcasts, even the amazing free annotated Holy Bhagavad Gita app by JKYog. Being at the very least a highly sensitive person (my diagnosis was GAD but I think it might be deeper…) I found that these spiritual insights and practices were quite helpful and absolutely budget friendly 😇 and perhaps you or others will benefit too 🙏❤️ you are magnificent and I appreciate your work 💕

How are you liking the workbook so far? I think he did a great job with it.

my dear wife made a full recovery from her BPD using CBT/DBT. she also applied the techniques for treating my physical condition which is triggered by even the smallest amount of muscular tension in the wrong area. so even the slightest reaction to an emotion can put me in bed for days. the DBT helps me to notice when a twinge is starting in my muscles and then I simply arrange my physical posture to remove pressure from the tense area. so it's almost a combination of DBT and Alexander technique. after she did this, I didn't mind living with her BPD at all, and that's what spurred on her eventual recovery. 🧡

    !!!
    ding ding ding
    I've been looking for this.
Like I've asked myself: How do I accept myself as I am while striving for improvement?
    Maybe DBT is the answer.
    wow.

If you have emotion regulation issues, then it could definitely help! I’ll be breaking down and reviewing some resources for learning and practicing DBT skills at home. You may also benefit from “the self-talk workout” which I’ve mentioned before. Sometimes we get stuck because of the effects of negative self talk.

    New video! Hype!
What was that comment in the start of your video?
Ohhh, you're looking at comments on the existing videos. You're setting up the value proposition of your video. I see you.
Side note: can I learn and use DBT on my own.
    Over two years. Great!
Oh that was fun. "I'm not a mental health professional like the creators at psych hub." {shows negative reviews} with sound effects.
So maybe social proof matteres more than being a mental health "professional."
"Popular. You're gonna be popular. You'll hang with the right cohorts, you'll be good at sports, know the slang you've got to know. So let's start, cause you've gut an awfully long way to go."
    - from Wicked
    Information of DBT --> essentials.
    What is DBT?????
A form of psycotherapy developed by Dr ---.
    Slow down, who was that?
    Dr Marshe Linehan.
The gold standard for BPD treatment.
Found effective for many other conditions. Icluding ones related to isuues with emotional regulation and impulse control.
-- hey, I have issues with emotional regulationl and impulse control!
A little background is needed to properly explain what DBT is.
-- Darn, I'm not ready for background, becuase I'm feeling information overload. I'm going to go listen to some instrumental music, then return in a next comment. Thank you for your video.
