  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of talk therapy that is most well known for its efficacy in Borderline Personality Disorder treatment. Despite its popularity for BPD treatment, it has also been found effective for treating other conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Bipolar Disorder, and Eating Disorders like Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder. It also helps more general issues regarding emotion regulation and impulse control.
    Although DBT as a full therapy has multiple components, which may be appropriate depending on symptoms, DBT skills are the core component that can be learned through self-help resources. These materials are only meant to teach DBT skills and concepts, so they are not a replacement for therapy, but they can be a great way to supplement therapy or skills groups if you need more than what they offer.
    In this video, I break down and review a few popular DBT Self Help Workbooks.
    **Edit - When discussing the Self-Directed DBT Skills 3 Month Workbook, I mentioned that it doesn't have the worksheet's available for download, but I was incorrect! There is a QR Code on page 208.

    Wow, thank you so so much for mentioning my book!!! DBT skills can be absolutely life-changing, but many people can't afford or find comprehensive DBT. In writing Self-Directed DBT Skills, my co-author and I had the primary goal of making genuine DBT skills (according to Dr. Linehan's original treatment) more accessible to as many people as possible. I'm so glad to hear our writing resonated with you! Looking forward to seeing your future videos, too. ❤

      Thank you for watching and commenting!! That's so cool. There's no doubt you've already changed many lives through the individual and group work you've done, but it's great to see you taking that work even further to help a larger audience. Similarly, a big reason I chose RUclips as a means to help others is because of how accessible it is to a wide range of people, so I hope this video leads more people to your book! I absolutely support and appreciate what you're doing, and I look forward to seeing your future work.

    Thanks for this, good video. I love book reviews as it is, and this one on DBT is especially helpful. I have the first one, DBT Skills Workbook, and like you, I enjoy non-fiction, but it's taking me a long time to get through it. Part of it is I've been slacking on reading, another part is that I can't wait to get to the chapter on interpersonal communication, the last chapter (I think), but insist on going in order.
    I keep getting distracted with other books (recently), and I need to make more progress in this one! Lol... but I am encouraged that I'm not alone, and that you do find it very helpful overall too.
    Good to know about the other ones, especially the most recently published one, it sounds good too. I'll take this video as motivation to pick up the workbook again. Oh and yes, I skip those activities with long prompts too - or I shorten/modify them when I can. Thanks again, Sarah!

      Thank you! I really wasn't sure how much interest there would be in a book review like this, so I appreciate your comment a lot. With how the green book is set up, you don't *really* have to go in order, but I don't blame you if you want to anyway - I'm the same way haha. The 3 month workbook should be done in order though since there's a purposeful order to the weeks, and the chapters build off one another.
      I'm glad I'm not the only one who skips those long exercises 😋 I hope you can continue with the green book or try out the new one. I used to be great at focusing on one book at a time, but now I'm constantly getting distracted from books with new books too lol. So many things to learn about!!!

    Have you heard the podcast, "DBT & Me"? I was in a DBT group when Covid hit & found myself kinda lost without it... That's when I discovered that podcast & it was fairly new at the time. I started at the beginning & it was Hugely helpful for me. Oh & I have 3 of those 4 books myself... Also a DBT nerd😅!

    • @SarruhTonin
      @SarruhTonin  5 месяцев назад +1

      I have not, but that sounds great and I'm so glad you found it helpful! I'll have to check it out at some point, thank you for letting me know about it. And shout out to a fellow DBT nerd! If you want to add to your collection, the new one really is top notch - I assume that's the one you don't have since it came out so recently.

      I'll definitely be checking it out! I'm fairly stable these days & technically in remission, but it's so easy to start sliding back, that I'm constantly reading books or listening to podcasts to keep everything I've learned fresh.

    • @SarruhTonin
      @SarruhTonin  5 месяцев назад +1

      Congrats on remission!! As long as you keep taking care of yourself and keep healing, you’ll find yourself feeling more stable and secure in recovery over time. Refreshers never hurt though, like I said in the other DBT video - DBT skills are really just life skills! (But you know that of course 😋)
