What are People with Borderline Personality Disorder REALLY Like? More BPD Misconceptions
In this chapter of my "Borderline Myths and Misconceptions" series, I break down common misconceptions about personality traits and other characteristics of people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
Misdiagnosis and Stereotypes
A lot of people with BPD get misdiagnosed because of stereotypes and misinformation. Misdiagnosis can delay getting the right treatment, and since BPD is treatable, this can be a big problem. Stereotypes also lead to negative views about BPD, which can affect how people with the disorder see themselves and hinder their recovery.

      Wow, thank you so much! That means so incredibly much to me. I'm going to be focusing on some non-BPD-specific videos for a little (like this one), but I think they'll still be helpful to other people on their journeys. I need to focus on topics that are more currently relevant to where I am right now, but there will definitely be more BPD content down the road.

    Thank you. This was very validating and helpful! I’ve been misdiagnosed and masking my symptoms for so long because of the stigma. Now that I’m finally coming to terms with it I’m embracing the gift of emotional sensitivity while learning that I can change and I’m not a bad person. 🙏🏼

      Hi! I'm so glad you found this video helpful! It's fantastic that you're working through the diagnosis like that - it can be difficult rewriting our long-held understandings of ourselves. Emotional sensitivity seems to be the main building block for BPD. I haven't found anyone with the diagnosis yet who hasn't had emotional sensitivity from a young age (although some had to learn to suppress emotions in their environments). So yes, even without having symptoms of BPD anymore, that emotional sensitivity remains. It can feel like a curse, but as you say, it's also a gift, and you can absolutely learn to embrace it and use it to your advantage. I'm super excited for you on your journey. I seriously love hearing stuff like this, so I appreciate you commenting. I hope you'll stick around and check out my other videos. I think you'll find them helpful as well! Best of luck with everything.

    What about the masking though? My bpd ex said she wore a mask 99% of the time. I have no idea who she was

    • @SarruhTonin
      @SarruhTonin 24 дня назад

      My response depends on what kind of mask she was referring to. Masking as in not showing symptoms externally while experiencing them internally? Or wearing a mask as in pretending to be a different person due to a lack of identity? People (with BPD or not) wear "masks" for many different reasons. Either way, I'm sorry you feel that way with your ex, that's really difficult to deal with.

    I wondered about remission, just recently diagnosed at 52 years of age I wondered if remission was possible for someone as old as me.

    • @SarruhTonin
      @SarruhTonin 24 дня назад

      I'm glad you found the channel, then! I absolutely believe it's possible at later ages, and I've seen first hand accounts of people who have been through it. It can of course be more difficult to undo the behavior patterns if they've been set in and reinforced for so long, and there can be extra trauma to have to heal from because of the extended experience of symptoms (and their effects) before reaching that point. Even as you get better, it can be difficult not to resent those years that seem lost. But "better late than ever" couldn't be more true, and you have the opportunity to make something of the suffering. You can use the new diagnosis to better understand yourself, get appropriate treatment, transform your life, and finally align with your core self and fulfill your life's true purpose. It's not easy work, but it's beyond beyond beyond worth it. I wish you the best of luck and hope you'll subscribe if you haven't and check out my other videos. Even the topics that aren't BPD specific have somehow contributed to my overall recovery journey.

    There are a few loyal, loving people out there. Youll know them by their gentle persistence and refusal to exploit but rather have an instinct to protect. Give them some trust and be very logical, dont allow any emotions to make a decision, ask them how they feel about you and what they want for and with you, then believe them!

    Sarruh can you please describe what it feels like when people are trying to reach out and help you? For me, living with someone with BPD it was like dealing with someone that was a back hole or bottomless pit. Anything I did was consumed and reciprocated back less and less.

    • @SarruhTonin
      @SarruhTonin Месяц назад

      Hi, that's a great question - but a very difficult one to answer. Beyond looking for emotional support, compassion, and company, I usually didn't feel like anyone else actually *could* help me. I often felt like something was broken inside me and if there was any chance that it could be fixed (which I frequently doubted), it'd have to be by my doing. I also have a history of being a people pleaser and defining my worth by what I could do for others - and had relationships where this was reinforced - so I felt guilty for wanting help and often tried to make up for it by giving more. So I think this question really depends on the person. Support, understanding, and compassion can go a long long way, but if someone is not getting professional help and/or working on themselves, the type of help others do try to provide won't necessarily be truly helpful. There's a fine and often unclear line between supporting and enabling. I'm sorry for your experience, but it is nice that you wanted to help. It sounds like it was either not the type of help they needed (not necessarily your fault) or they weren't open to accepting help.

    My favorite family member comment by her family. About my ex's BPD. "She seams fine, she's just trying to get attention" This after her 3rd, crisis related hospitalization. (About one week each)Due to Her anger directed inward over her self-sabotaging and impulsive, financially delusional actions. Years of miss diagnosis😂 and others minimizing her symptoms as everything from childishness to poor nutrition. It's bad enough fighting BPD, having to fight with miss diagnosis and stereotypes, sucks. It just makes it harder to come out the other end intact
